Homework is to continue reading. We looked at Topical Invention, the theme "beauty." We developed sentences, declarative sentences that answered questions which led to developing definitions, analogies, consequences and tomorrow we will look at testimony. There was a handout. I put extras in the bin near my office L-234.

Introduction

In "Alice Walker:A Life" numerous things were mentioned from hate to love. However, there was one thing that was unchanging in this book was beauty. Beauty has managed to dominate society and sometimes handicap the most beautiful people. What I see is that beauty is like yor favorite blanket, it gives you comfort. When that comfort is taken away from you, you have to find another way to keep your confidence and security.

What is beauty? The definition of beauty stated in the dictionary is, “the qualities that give pleasure to the senses”. Within Alice Walker: A Life, beauty is expressed in many ways, some are physical and some are not. Alice Walker has two types of beauty, the physical beauty that was temporary taken away from her when she was at a young age and the beauty that is so strong that even racism, congregation and poverty cannot touch. This second beauty is the pride of heritage; it is the will to succeeding no matter what obstacle is thrown against you; Alice’s beauty is her strength.

“Beauty”

While reading the book “Alice Walker: A Life” by Evelyn C. White, I’ve come to realize that Alice Walker equated her physical beauty, or in her eyes her lack of, with her self worth. From the time of the BB gun accident that deformed her eye she felt she was ugly. Alice Walker didn’t feel that losing her sight was nearly as much of an obstacle as what the injury made her look like. Doris Reid, a long time friend of Alice’s one time said to Alice, “Oh Alice, you look so pretty. You’re just glowing,” and Alice’s response was, “Oh stop. I’m ugly. Everyone knows I’m not pretty anymore.” For a child, feeling disfigured like she did can be extremely traumatic.

The story of Alice Walker "A Life" by Evelyn C. White tells of her joys, pains and inner struggles. In Alice's early years it was said that she was one of the most beautiful children in all of Eatonton, Ga (her birthplace). Until one day everything changed. An unexpected incident occurred that would leave a permanent scar phyically, mentally and emotionally. For many years Alice's injury was the primary cause of her struggle to find that true beauty comes from with in.

Introduction

Beauty is the essence in which captivates an individual and makes them stand out from one another. It can be defined in many ways, not only on appearance, but from whats inside the mind. In the book, " Alice Walker: A Life," we see that being beautiful is appreciated for whats in the mind and not what you wear. Walker thinks beauty on the outside isn't as important as what you have in the inside. If beauty is important on the outside, then there is a reason why Walker disregards this.

Beauty comes from many places in many ways. The beauty of knowledge, patience, strength, virtue and love never fades or ages. Such beauty catches your attention; it delights and touches your heart in many ways.It stays with you. Alice is that beauty. She faced all her challenges because she has love and patience within her.

Introduction

Beauty is the essence of perfection and is an unflawed trait admired by many. It is been shown that beauty exists not only in the flesh but the soul of the person. Alice Walker was gifted with beautiful facial features as a child, to only be robbed of its beauty due to the BB gun incident. Her having an ugly eye and being constantly teased by other children further fuel her depression and low self esteem. In “Alice Walker; A Life” by Evelyn C, Alice had to reconstruct her identity and sense of self worth from within after being uglified by the BB gun.

In "Alice Walker: A Life" written by Evelyn C. White, beauty is taken away from Alice in a matter of seconds in a childhood incident when the power of a bbgun pellet struck her eye, leaving her blinded and in great pain. The unfortunate accident left Alice's eye deformed and unsightly causing her to think she was no longer beautiful, for beauty is known as a trait of perfection and flawlessness. She often became depressed because of her imperfection, but realized that she didn't need a perfect face to be beautiful. Beauty can be seen in more ways than just physically, if it comes from within your heart and soul, people will surely recognize it.

Introduction/Theses

Alice Walker: Beauty

Introduction

Beauty in A Basic Dictionary: A Student’s Reference defines the word as a person or thing pleasing to the sight or hearing (13). Most people think of the former, something they see, when considering beauty. Alice Walker was no different for she saw beauty externally. Unfortunately to her dismay, beauty was taken away from her after the horrific BB gun incident that marred her eye. Evelyn C. White would quote Alice, who cared about her physical appearance, in her book Alice Walker: A Life, “I tell [my eye] I hate it. I do not pray for sight. I pray for beauty,” (41).

Theses

1. Definition: Through Alice Walker’s vision catastrophe she saw how beauty can be gained and taken away.

2. Analogy: Beauty is like a piece of art being critiqued, it lies in the eye of the beholder. Alice would see beauty in new light years after she finished lamenting her own eye.

3. Consequence: Alice Walker saw the world in a different light after her tragic BB gun episode which led her to write great poetry and essays during and after this time of pain.

4. Alice’s poetry, novels, and other works are said to be fictional, but are they really?

5. Alice was fairly carefree about her personal life, but when it came to her writing she was a mother to her child, the child being her writing.

6. Although Alice had many writing teachers and mentors, Alice mastered her craft by being left alone.

Introduction
After reading Alice Walker A Life by written by Evelyn C. White the thing I payed most attention to was her beauty. When the BB gun incident happens she didn’t care too much for the sight she just wanted her eye to look pretty on the outside. I think she cared for beauty more then anything else because she got so much attention as a child. As she moved on to the 7th grade her spirit was lifted by her 7th grade teacher who as a child was also blinded in her right eye. Beauty is like getting An A on a final exam it feels good.

Alice Walker: Thesis Statement – Introduction: Theme Beauty
26 January 2008

When I was reading Alice Walker: A Life is that the fact on her got short by her big brother. The beauty can be in a flash and it will not be there any more once it is taken from a person and all beauty is lost. When beauty is lost in a person they will not be happy anymore they will be depress and not felling confident herself.
Thesis Statement:
Definition: Beauty is what is inside a person rather than on the side of a person. Beauty is what makes a person happy rather than sad. Beauty is a quality that makes us feel happy.
Analogy: Beauty is as if every day is a Friday with a sunset. Alice Walker felt happy when she got her eye fixed eye.
Consequence: The consequence of Alice was that she had went through a cross fire of the BB bullet that had stuck her in the right eye. Alice had to go to surgery. Her parents would have saved money but would cost more than the savings that her parents had.
Testimony: If Alice Walker (AW) did not walk or run in the cross fire of the BB pellet or bullet AW would not have had the eye surgery.
When Alice was growing up and unfowanatlly she got hit by the BB Bullet it change her life. Alice Walker writes books to keep her busy and to not looking down on herself because of her eye.

Alice Walker: Beauty

Introduction:

Brief Body:

Initally, Alice since birth was praised for being the cutest baby.
i.e. won the cutest baby contest

BBgun incident that marred Alice's right eye left her introverted and not as outgoing.

Alice's poetry shows her grief and pain. She felt isolated because she was sent away and not her brothers. School kids made fun of her appearance.

Conclusion with the stylings of Dominique W.

"Her hair was done up all cute and she had these real pretty dresses she'd gotten up there in Boston. Nobody in Eatonton could hold a candle to her" (50). Alice never verbally acknowledged that she had gained her confindence back after her scar tissue was removed, but one could see that she had found herself again. Alice had went through that terrible patch in her life and was able to find happiness back in "cute Alice" again. Sometimes horrific ordeals can cause a positive change and a negative one. For Alice it was both. She lost sight in her right eye, however because of it she became one beautifully talented writer.

Introduction/Thesis

What is beauty? The definition of beauty stated in the dictionary is, “the qualities that give pleasure to the senses”. Within “Alice Walker: A Life”, beauty is expressed in two ways, one physically, the other mentally. Alice Walker has both physical and mental beauty. The beauty that was temporarily taken away from her when she was young and the beauty that is so strong even racism, congregation and poverty cannot touch. This second beauty is the pride of heritage; it is the will to succeed no matter what obstacle is thrown against you. The beauty that is expressed in “Alice Walker: A Life,” is strength.

Body outline

When Alice was young, her physical beauty was stolen from her by the BB gun incident (page 4); this incident left not only a physical scar but also a mental one. After the incident the image that she had for herself was distorted, instead of seeing herself as a beautiful and confidence person, she saw herself as a shy, timid and ugly person (page 43).

Beauty is everywhere, you just have to understand what it is and look for it. For Alice she found that beauty when she went to China. As Alice stated while she was looking over Beijing’s broad boulevard of trees, “’They are a kind of magic,’ ‘They see modest and young, one thinks of them in future tense. How grand they will look at eighty…’”(page 368)

Trees to Alice meant both physical and mental beauty. The growth of the trees and how strong and beautiful it becomes as it ages (368).

Ding Ling, a legendary Chinese writer was also a symbol of beauty to Alice. She represented faith and strength for Alice. Ding described by Alice, “’She is short and brown and round,’ “imprisoned by reactionaries and radicals…her husband executed by firing squad…herself locked in solitary confinement…this ‘old’ woman…has through everything, simply continued to write…she holds no bitterness, only saying…’I lost time. Oh to be sixty-seven again!’” Though Ding endured many human cruelty and hardship her faith for humanity is untainted (368).

Conclusion

Physical and mental beauty are interlaced, both having great effects on each other. While being weak and fragile, it is also strong and invulnerable. Beauty can help you, but also hurt you. Beauty is strength, faith and growth.

Conclusion (Christina Ross)

At a young age Alice walker lost not only her sight in her right eye, but her beauty and self esteem as well. Beauty is not only a physical trait, but something that comes within as well. Alice’s beauty is her strength, which helped her overcome racism, congregation and poverty.

Beauty is perceived differently from person to person. Alice Walker looks as beauty being, good looking and lovely, while others feel differ about beauty, they feel is not only the physical appearance, but a persons personality is what makes someone beautiful. However when Alice got an injury that would leave her with a scar physically, mentally, and emotionally. This scar changed her perspective on beauty, she realizes that beauty is not always about what one wears, it is about the knowledge one has that makes them beautiful.

For Alice Walker, beauty was all about being cute. But when she was shot accidentally by her brother while playing "cowboys and Indians" she thought she was no more beautiful. She thought she was no more a cute and normal kid because she lost her vision and left with the scar tissue on her right eye.

But later when the scar tissue was removed,Alice had different definition for beauty. She described beauty as the confidence and self worth she regained after the removal of the tissue. She thought she recognized her pride of being beauty as she said in the final pages of beauty,"Now that I have raised by head and I win the boyfriend of my dream."

"Beauty"
What is beauty? many people assume that beauty represents what outside the person such as physical apperances. but never the inside the person. like Alice Walker in the begginging of the book she thought that beauty was what you looked in the outside like before she got shot by the bb gun by her brothers she thought she was pretty but when after the acciendent she felt ulgy and then she relized beauty really counts in the inside. so as for me i think that beauty really counts inside the person like their personality because a person can look pretty outside but the way they act could make them look ulgy.

Beauty can come in a myriad of forms. When we are young we learn to cling on to one beauty, for most of us it's physical. As you grow older we understand that there is many beautiful characteristics about each of us that makes us special. Beauty gives us confidence and security as we walk through life. What would our world be like if everyone felt confident and secure?

In Alice Walker "A life" the author talks alot about beauty. Mostly her perseptions of what bueaty is. The reason why she talks so much about beauty is because Alice Walker got shot in the eye with a BB gun when she was younger and no longer felt beautiful. throughout the book she basically proves that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" because its all about how you carry yourself and how you, yourself feels.

Alice Walker was very pretty as a child, she was even entered in beauty contests as a baby, but a BB gun accident to her eye would take that all away from her too soon in life. "There is no disputing the anguish that settled over the Walker household in the aftermath of the incident that left an unsightly scar and permanently damaged the vision of the sassy, outgoing child who had once happily proclaimed herself to be 'the prettiest' in the family." (35-36)

At a young age, Alice Walker suffered from a terrible injury to her eye due to a BB gun incident causing her great pain physically and mentally destroying her self-esteem and performance in school. "'Up until the eye incident, Alice had been a straight A student, then she started bringing home Bs and Cs.'" (39)

Due to Alice Walker's injury to her eye, she thought she was no longer beautiful. "'I looked beyond the eye, whereas I don't think Alice did. I remember telling her, as we got older, 'Oh Alice, you look so pretty. You're just glowing,' and all this and that. And she'd say,'Oh stop. I'm ugly. Everybody knows I'm not pretty anymore.'" (40)

Beauty is a state of mind, what is beautiful to some may not be beautiful to others. Alice Walker believed true beauty comes from within. Although beauty comes from within outer blemishes cane sometimes overpower what we know about ourselves. People sometimes crave outer beauty more than they respect their own inner beauty. The definition of beauty is knowing you are beautiful no matter what others may say and not judging others level of beauty sole on what you see.

“Beauty”

Introduction
In my view, Beauty is natural, so it’s obvious for everyone to feel it as their own “ornaments”. Everyone likes to show and take a glimpse of that “ornament”, but in “Alice Walker: A life” written by Evelyn C. white, Alice walker seems unhappy with her physical appearance, as she lost her right eye when playing BB gun pellet with her two brothers. With that incident, she thought her beauty is lost somewhere and she felt that she was no more beautiful as before.

Body
She viewed the same world in two different ways. Everything appeared to be dark for her when her right eye was blinded. Everything seemed to be against her. She went through the journey of pain, loss, sorrow, and disrespect .She felt a part missing from her. Later on when she fixed her eye again she felt as if she got her full life back. She felt as if she was complete again. She regained confidence.

Conclusion
Beauty is associated both physically as well as mentally. No one can describe beauty either physical or mentally. You see beauty through your eyes but you feel it inside your heart.

Essay about “beauty”

Finding beauty

Introduction:
In Alice Walker; “A Life” written by Evelyn C. White, Alice goes on through numerous stages of her life in which she believed beauty means. As a kid Alice looked at beauty an image of how one looks and that a person is to be judged by their facial, rather than their mental impression. But as she got older , she attended Sarah Lawrence college where she began to notice that isn’t how one dresses or looks on the outside but that ones beauty is in their knowledge. Therefore beauty is like the cover of a book its un judge able.

Body:
When Alice was a baby her beauty was irresistible. Once, her parents showed her off so much at a cutest baby contest held in the church the family attended that she won first prize. She was adored all of the time as a kid. When she was about eight years old, she was accidentally shot with a BB gun on her right eye. The bullet blinded her eye and made it slant in a different direction than the other. Unfortunately the incident left a scare and flipped her life upside down taking away all of her confidence and causing her to believe she was ugly. Classmates at her school made fun of her and made her feel like an outcast. She even began to feel like her parents looked at her in a different way than they did before the incident, even though they didn’t. In results of her emotions, she harassed her eye out of anger. In the seventh grade Alice met a teacher whose right eye was also blinded and that helped her get over it a little. But in addition to looks she thought that beauty was wearing nice and expensive clothes. It was the students at Spelman her first college she attended that made her feel that way.

It never occurred to her that beauty could come in another form or it can be the knowledge and self-esteem that comes from within a person. But she’s not to blame. It was hard for a black student to be educated in an unfair government that segregated African Americans from Caucasians and gave the Caucasians double the money they gave African Americans for school supplies. Never did any of these thoughts pass her mind until she went to Sarah Lawrence and noticed students wearing what ever they felt comfortable in, and only looked at the talent and skills of other students.

Alice struggled all her teenage years thinking she was ugly and didn’t have any thing to do with beauty. But after going to Sarah Lawrence she noticed all her peers and teachers giving her a lot of attention for her poetry and talent in writing. She began to notice that her beauty came from inside, and began to build her self confidence. A lot of guys were attracted to her due to her knowledge, so her eye didn’t have that much effect on her feelings as much as it did earlier on in her life.

Conclusion:
Even if her eye affected her feelings, it also affected her ability to become a great writer. The morrow of her story is that an ability or strength is taken from us in order to gain another a better ability. In Alice’s case her eye was taken and in return for the loss of her it, she became a better writer. Because of the time she spent by her self reading books while avoiding people because of her looks.
