We started the Takaki presentations after a few false starts. Team Destiny Cloud Fist were first. They covered Transitions, and will complete the presentation tomorrow. So far, there are doing an excellent job with the materials and serve as a great model for other classmates.

One of their presenters didn't show up, so she has a zero on the assignment which is weighted 50 percent of the essay grade. If we have time, we might be able to let those who were absent present their section alone, but this is only if we have time. I will average your essay grade with the presentation, so let's say you get an A overall for the group project and a C on the essay, that will boost your grade to a B.

This is the only assignment where the writing and presentation are given equal weight, so take advantage of this. If there are components missing like outlines or reflections on the presentations (audience) and self-evaluations on the process--students loose points overall. I do read your cyber-assignments. If you are absent, you cannot make up the work.

Responses
Post the responses to Team Destiny Cloud Fist: Esbeyde, Patrick S., Andres. Team members once your presentation is complete, post your reflections: What worked? What didn't? Lessons learned?

Class: What worked well? Be specific. What you learned? How did the presentation transcend the pages of A Different Mirror?

The presentation was good much of which came from the book. Oppression has affected us all no matter what race, color or creed, the question is what do we do about it complain or refrain?

The second group that went yesterday didnt get to finish their presentation from lack of time, but for the. Most part, I thought the group did fairly well. They were prepared and very informative. I liked how one of the presentors filled in for one of their group mates, even though that person won't get the credit, he did a good job.

I'm tired of hearing how white people are evil. What about the Irish? They were white. They didn't do anything wrong. What about the Chinese? Technically , their skin is white, yet they've done no evil. Stop with all the white people are evil talk. You're letting what a very small group of Europeans did cloud your perception and claiming an entire race is evil. That in itslef is Racist.

Who said white people are evil? It wasn't a small group of Europeans either. It was entire nations supported by its leadership and the rank and file which pushed a doctrine of manifest destiny: stealing resources, enslaving human beings, fattening the coffers through intimidation and deceit.

Takaki doesn't call anyone evil, but after reading the work, which is a history of multicultural America, one sees a lot of evil deeds committed.

Last week Nigeria celebrated its 50anniversary of independence from Great Britain. Puerto Rico is still a colony and there are at least one or two more left.

In 2010 there are nations that belong to other nations, which means, its citizens can't vote.

You have the same book we have with the same evidence. It is pretty sound and well-documented.

The theme this semester is privilege and entitlement. Evil is real, and it isn't a person; however, people benefit and people suffer from said systems who have a lot in common: race, gender, class, education, economic status.

Response to Team Destiny Cloudfist's Presentation by Linh Tran

The whole group gave a very solid presentation. Each person did very well in conveying the important points of their chapter, and equally well in covering for those members who were not present. I really liked how they had brought in something tangible that tied in with what they presented.

I think their presentation was very well put together. But I would suggest having more than one slide for each chapter presented, because the audience was staring at the same images for the entire duration of each speaker.

A few things I learned from this presentation are the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, the wrongful deportation of natural born Mexican Americans, and the great impact of the Harlem Ranaissance.

Response to Team Destiny Cloudfist's Presentation by Monique Grant

I enjoyed the presentation because it was consistent and supportive of the material in the book. The presentation was clear, interesting and informative. I appreciated the power point because of the large font which made it easy to take notes and the images which were interesting to look at. The information about the Native,Mexican, and African Americans was fascinating and kept my attention along with the props that were used.

Response to Team Destiny Cloudfist's Presentation

The group did a very good job, you can tell how prepared they were and how they really understood what they read. They also worked as a group, they knew each other's topics so they easily covered up the section of the missing group mate. The information about Indians, Mexicans, African Americans were very well said, interesting.
