Social entrepreneurs are the empowered people who use their business to help the community. It includes all the activities that solve all kinds of social problems. The main characteristic of most entrepreneurs is the ability to apply fresh ideas to improve the community. Most of the times social entrepreneurs handle situations that government doesn’t take care of. They usually associated with voluntary and non-profit organizations.
Mimi Silbert is the woman who established the Delancy Street Foundation in San Francisco. She owns several businesses, and she hires people with criminal history. This is a rehabilitation program for people who are out of jail, homeless or drug addict. Mimi’s organization train these people, give them chance to recover and graduate high school. And it looks like all the participants manage to improve their lives.
I think that what she does is very important to the community. Society often ignores people who have problems. People used to judging others for the mistakes they make in life, although nobody is perfect. Mimi gives these people a hope and encourages them to change.
And it helps the community as well. Less people are out on the streets robbing and killing.

Social entrepreneurs are individuals who use their business skills to better the world. In the film New Heroes we are introduced to Mimi Silbert, she helps operate the Delancey program. The Delancey Program is a self sufficient program that raises it's own funds. The program is a place where ex-offenders, addicts, homeless. and the people who are considered at the bottom of the barrel can receive assistance.
At the Delancey program the men have to make a two year commitment to stay clean and out of trouble. Each member must also get their G.E.D.The idea of the program is to build the person back up and give them the necessary skills to be able to continue working once they leave the program.
Delancey offers the residents many job avenues such as working for the Delancey restaurant, moving company, landscape company, Christmas tree lots, or their cafe.
The money that they make does directly to the program. They receive no financial assistance form anyone they use the business skills they learn to make a profit. Each member of the Delancey program is helping one another build a team and family environment.

Three paragraph response to the episode of The New Heroes:

Anyone can become a social entrepreneur. One just needs a caring heart, open mind, motivation and patience. All the organizations around the world that help individuals everywhere was created by one single person who cared and used his or her voice to take action. Their simple deed helped many people get back on their feet. The abundant amount of people saved each year by these dedicated people proves that everyone deserves a second chance.

One social entrepreneur in particular is Mimi Silbert, the creator of the Delancy Street Foundation. She is a perfect example why social entrepreneurs are important. She takes her job very seriously. Each and every ex-inmate she helps, it makes her feel like a better person. When those men got out of jail, they started off with nothing, but with her support and guidance motivated them to clean their slate and start over. If it wasn't for her, they wouldn't be who they are today.

A social entrepreneur is someone who is not afraid of change, they believe in others and stand for what is right. Without them, the world would be different; No one would be aware of what is going on around us. The people who create change and help others are the people who keep the world moving round. They help people in need by putting others needs before their own. Anyone can become a social entrepreneur as long as one keeps motivated and having their minds open.

Mimi Silbert, Delancey Street Foundation

It is possible to get good people from ex-offenders as Mimi Silbert, a social entrepreneur, shows us. She is the founder of Delancey Street Foundation, a rehabilitation center which helps drug addicts, sex offenders, thieves, etc.
be re-introduced into society. Through 2 years of training they can develop skills necessary to be a productive part of society again. These people learn how to be part of a team which makes them aware of their aptitudes and potential, turning them into rehabilitated persons. Each one is trying to overcome his dark past and each has a common goal: to change the path of his life. Delancey Street teaches them how to do it. In the video, a moving company and a restaurant are two of the Delancey Street projects in San Francisco, where ex-convicts are working under practical training to become productive members of society.

As a social entrepreneur, Silbert works with individuals who made bad decisions in their lives but they paid their sentence in prison. Unfortunately for an ex-convict, those years spent in prison are a stigma because society does not fully accept him, and he doesn’t accept himself. His self-esteem is very low after leaving prison. Often an ex-convict returns to crime, which is his way of survival because he doesn’t know what else to do. Crime is his response to the negation of society. Through her mothering and motivation Silbert nurtures and guides these individuals to success. After working 40 years on these projects, she doesn’t’ look bored at all, instead she cheers and genuinely cares for her “Harvard losers”.

The government should ensure a successful reintegration into society of a former prisoner, but in reality what happens is that the person is often forgotten and becomes a threat to others again. What do we do to make this better? Normally nothing and we turn our head and try to avoid that person, not understanding his life and the motives that led him to commit such errors. We should at least collaborate monetarily with organizations such as Delancey, or even better we could start our own business in this country or abroad to help people who want to change because the problem is global. Mimi teaches us that it is possible to start a small business in which one can work, employ other people, and expand economic growth. Why not make a difference instead of complaining bitterly about the lack of action by the authorities? We must ask ourselves, what can we do?

A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses their business skills to organize, create, and make a social change to the society. Delancey Street Foundation is a very successful rehabilitation program which raises its own money and gives ex- felons, prostitutes, homeless drug addicts and many others who reached the bottom, a opportunity to start a new life. Teaching them academic, vocational and social skills that they need to live in society. They need to be committed and clean for two years and learn a skill so they can live on their own once they are out of the program. Mimi Silbert believes that people that are their own problem can be their own solution, she also believes that people can brake their destructive cycle and became a better person if given the opportunity.

New Heroes: Delaney Street

Named after the street her parents lived on after they immigrated to America, Mimi Silbert, started an organization to rehabilitate former convicted felonies and stabilize the lives of the homeless. Based in San Francisco, this organization started in 1971 and has helped thousands of people by giving them the tools to better their lives. Being homeless or a convict felon greatly reduces your chances of leading a productive life. In the working world there is a lot of suspicion and doubt that convicted felons are industrious people because of their criminal records. This leads them to go back to their criminal backgrounds to further support themselves. Homeless people lack the living stability to educate themselves or keep up a steady job which adds to their helplessness and suffering.
At Delaney Street, which has spread to many different states in America such as New York and Los Angeles, Mimi helps people by giving them a place to educate themselves and allow them to develop three marketable skills to insure their survival. Many residents, due to their past circumstances have not received a full high school education or built up their work history. At Delaney before graduating from the program, in three years, they must all pass a maintenance portion of the program that helps them with basic life skills like time management. They must also earn an equivalent of a high school diploma and acquire at least three profitable trades. The organization also has its own businesses such as a carpeting company and a moving business which generates income for the residents and also sustains the organization.
The set up of the program is to insure the stability and productivity of the former felons and homeless. Mimi allows them a place where all their basic needs are met. She shows them another way to live in society and get the things that they need. She educates them with basic schooling and skills that they can exchange for capital such as carpeting skills. The residents benefits from this program in an enormous way. The definition of a social entrepreneur is one who uses basic entrepreneur principles but instead of measuring capital as profit the main focus in on ending a social problem. Mimi has done this she seen the social problem that the homeless and many felons were facing. They were considered outcast among many in society and now they are looked upon as prolific. She views her profit in the amount of people that she helps and with 14,000 lives improved her corporation is thriving.

Three-Paragraph Response to New Heroes: Mimi Silber, Delancey Street

A social entrepreneur is someone who “identifies and solves social problems at a large scale.” They establish businesses not for their own profit but for the better of people who are underprivileged. They provide opportunities and tools that the underprivileged people need to progress in a stagnate life they live in. Social entrepreneurs do not address social issues in small-scales but are committed in “changing the system, spreading the solution and persuading entire societies to take new leaps.”

Mimi Silbert is a social entrepreneur based in San Francisco, California. She is the founder of the Delancey Street Foundation which mainly targets people who are homeless, drug-addicts, and criminals. These people are taught to lead productive, crime-free lives by participating in one of the twenty businesses that Ms. Mimi Silbert owns. These people are taught “marketable skills and inculcate in them habits of self-control and self-discipline” and are required to “pass equivalency exams to obtain a high school diploma” which will help them after they have graduated from the program.

The Delancey Street Foundation exemplifies what a social entrepreneur is because it addresses social issues that have been a long term problem in various communities with commitment. It targets people who have lived a misled life and provide them with opportunities that would better them and the community. Bettering these people eliminates the prejudice against them, and by turning their lives around, it creates a progressive community. The Delancey Street Foundation does not only inspire people of misled life but also regular people in the community.

In 1971, Mimi Silbert founded Delancey Street with four residents and a thousand dollar loan. She wanted to create a place for drug abusers and ex-convicts to rehabilitate themselves into society by taking on responsibilities such as jobs and cleaning up after themselves. In 30 years, Silbert has built her dream into a 20 million dollar a year organization expanded into four states. She has empowered 14,000 people and returned them into society with skills for the workforce.

Her foundation earns revenue by operating more than 20 businesses with these people. These schools teach residents marketable skills and provide them self-control and discipline. Each resident must pass an exam which is equivalent to a high school diploma in order to graduate from the program. They also need to find a job and a place to live. Now, Delancey Street not only receives money from their businesses, they also receive around 10 million dollars in private donations every year which enables them to help more people in the community.

Social Entrepreneurs are business men and women who focus their efforts in order to benefit society. A social entrepreneurs' goal is not profit, but the improvement of a certain aspect of society. These people devote their time to help advance social values, and make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

Mimi Silbert, the founder of Delancy Street Foundation is considered a social entrepreneur. She uses her business to help criminals, addicts and homeless people. These people are the most looked down upon in society. Not many people would treat a criminal the way they would others let alone help them. It is almost like a rehabilitation center in restoring the positive attitude of people who have just lost their way.

This foundation focuses on restoring the confidence of ex-cons by helping them atone for their bad behavior. They learn that it is very much possible for them to be civilized human beings. They aquire many skills that help them with their confidence, and then they use them to help people. Mimi Silbert used the example of balancing your good deeds with bad on the scale and eventually obliterating the bad. These ex-criminals that most people cast off as worthless, are now proud and skilled workers because of the Delancy street foundation.

A Social Entreprenuer: Mimi Silbert

A social entrepreneur is a person that has the ability to identify a social, cultural, or political problem in a community within society, utilizes their resources to organize and propose solutions to the problem, and as a result becomes a form of solution to that particular problem by transforming themselves and assisting those in need around them. To be a social entrepreneur, one must possess the right qualities and character traits. The person’s character must include dedication, commitment, patience, strength, hard-working, great attitude, and a big heart. Skills the person must possess are sufficient communication, good organization, excellent listening and most importantly leadership as well as team-playing. A social entrepreneur welcomes changes and new beginnings. They are not intimidated by obstacles, perils and challenges they are faced with during their attempt to help others.

Mimi Silbert is an excellent example of what a social entrepreneur exemplifies. Mimi Silbert identified a problem, utilized her resources to organize and propose a solution to the problem, and as a result became a form of solution to the problem by transforming herself and aiding those in need around her. Mimi Silbert noticed how outlaws, ex-convicts, and ex-drug abusers had been labeled as “misfits” in our community and society and had been permanently out-casted by our workforce and gave these “misfits” a chance to rebirth themselves and make a name.

The Delancey Street Foundation is the organization Mimi Silbert founded in 1971 in San Francisco, California. She had a vision, drew a map and mapped out her journey. Her organization began with a one thousand dollar loan, just four residents in a small home. Today that home has evolved and transformed into a “residential education center” that is grossing over 20 million dollars a year with multiple locations all over the United States. It is operating more than 20 small businesses and has not accepted one dollar of state government money. The revenue from the small businesses is paying for all operating costs of the centers as they also receive private donations.

Social Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is a person that puts his or her money on the line to start a new business to be able to gain profit for themselves and the people working with them. Most of the time the entrepreneurs are the ones that earn most of the money since they put their time and money on the line to start their own business. That also gain most of the money because it was their idea and if the business fails, they fail, but if the business is successful they are successful too.
The difference between an entrepreneur and a social entrepreneur is that an a social entrepreneur invested of making money for themselves they put their money on the line to better people in the business of their hole community or maybe even bigger.
Like Mimi Silbert, the founder of the Delancy Street Foundation. She put her time and money on the line to help out other people. She helps out prostitutes, pimps, gangsters, drug users, and homeless people get out of the streets and find a way to have them enter the work force to make something good out of them. Most of the money used to provide food, house and education to each of the people in these programs came out of the money Mimi has opened. The people in these programs work for the right to study eat and sleep under a roof. And after the two year program ends most of the people are able to enter the work force with a high school diploma and skills able to be applied at a job.
