In April 2005, a student that was licensed to carry a weapon was caught having a gun in class. What’s unbelievable is that no criminal charges were filed against this student, and a spokesman from the university made a comment stating that the University had "the right to adhere to and enforce that policy as a common-sense protection of students, staff and faculty as well as guests and visitors.”

O n April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. A man by the name of Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 students, wounded countless others before he committed suicide, making this the deadliest shooting in the U.S. history. According to the law enforcement, Cho had purchase one of the guns used in the assault off of ebay; he waited a month and purchased another gun, which makes one Walther P22 and a Glock 19. According to Congress, one must pass the NICS Improvement Act, and one is required to do a background check for all gun sales before purchasing any gun. But unfortunately, Cho did not, if there was a background check made on Cho then we would of and could of avoided the massacre because Cho has a background of mental illness, and have a record of stalking 2 fellow students at Virginia Tech.

The Federal Government definitely should pass more strict handgun laws. Doing a background check, trafficking illegal guns, micro stamping, and complying with the Brady background check can save 30,000 lives a year. Instead of spending millions and billions of dollars every year, why isn’t the government spending it on our safety. Homicide rates are increasing every year, which obviously points to the fact that guns are easy access for these killers. Instead of hiring more inexperience police officers why isn’t our government spending the money on gun control, processing a background check can help because if the individual has a background with the police department or has some type of mental illness, obviously they will not be allowed to purchase a gun. Trafficking illegal guns can make civilians more aware that the government is serious about illegal guns in the streets and not only there will soon be less illegal guns in the streets. And last of all micro stamping, this can help track the owner of the gun, which could of avoided the second shooting at Virginia Tech.

Many might say that it’s just a waste of money and it causes too much trouble to purchase a gun. But really gun control is a very big problem in the United States, anyone is able to purchase illegal guns in the streets, any military personal is able to purchase major handguns and bring it back to the U.S. Guns can be purchase on EBAY! What has the world gone to? Guns are used for may purposes from protection, to hunting. If a person really loves to hunt they should be willing to go through background checks, there really is no harm to us civilians if the Federal Government passes more strict gun control law.

Cyber Essay
Number 2 question: Gun Control

Many people have heard about numerous school shooting over the years, and some times it hits close to home, while other times it hits 2,000 miles away. There has been numerous school shootings in the last 5 years. One of the recent school shooting was that at, “Virginia Tech,” which left 32 people dead, and many wounded. If there were tougher gun control laws, things like this could be prevented.
I think with the shooting at Virginia Tech, the federal government should pass more stringent handgun laws. I think that if the gun control laws were strict we would have fewer shootings, murders, and violence. According to an article at http://www.justfacts.com/issues.guncontrol.asp “In 1997 in the United States, there were approximately 7,927,000 violent crimes. Of these, 691,000 were committed with firearms,” “There were 15,289 murders, and of these murders 10,369 were committed with firearms,” according to the article.
There should be numerous tests that a person should take in order to have access to a firearm. Such tests should include a full psychological exam, drug test and complete background check. I believe if a person has on record to making threats or stalking people, a person who has a history of anger problems or to the extremes of a person being sent to a mental institution, to committing a felony should not be allowed to own a firearm. I believe if we made stricter gun control laws we would have a less of a crime free environment.
People become violent for many reasons such as to punish others, freedom, control, blaming, acting out, or simply just an image, status, role or reputation. Many of these people committing these crimes have no control of them-selves, and are mentally ill. If the government passed stricter gun control laws these type of people would not commit such strategist crimes.
In an article found at http://faculty.ccri.edu many people commit crimes have had a history of problems such as suicidal thoughts, and attempts, use alcohol and/or drugs, been in a domestic or relationship dispute, have an untreated mental illness, stopped taking medications, to a person who has a history of involvements, preoccupation or obsession with weapons.
We live in a really large world, and many people are facing death each and every minute we speak, many people are getting access to firearms, and are committing such violent crimes. We need to support by voting to get strict gun control laws passed. Things like Virginia Tech, and Columbine High School might of never happened if we just had strict laws of people wanting access to firearms.
These school shooting hit close to home for me, as I have a friend of mine who went to a school where they had a recent school shooting which took 1 life, and injured 25 victims on May 21st, 1998 in Springfield, Oregon.

The Long Time War between Ethiopia and Somalia

Ethiopia is located in the eastern horn of Africa and has a long time history dating back to Biblical times when it was referred to as Abyssinia. Because of its strategic location in the horn, Ethiopia is a vulnerable position due to its proximity to the Middle East. The Western powers have curiosity for so long to occupy the country, so they can have easier access to the Middle East. For Ethiopia, this unsecured location has caused to fight many wars through out history to protect its sovereignty.
At the beginning of the last century, Italy and Great Britain were colonizing nations in Africa. Somalia also horn of Africa was a colonized country by Italy. In1930 Italy tried to colonize Ethiopia to control the whole horn of Africa but they were defeated by the famous Battle of Adawa. This victory gave Ethiopia as one of the two countries which was not colonized and the first one in Africa to win a war against colonialists.
This war didn’t stop. Italy and Great Britain together had to redraw the border between Ethiopia and Somalia to cause instability in the region. The area where the map was redrawn is known as the Ogaden region. This area is known to be rich in natural resources such as oil. Since Biblical times the Ogaden has been within Ethiopia’s borders. In the history of Abyssinia, Ethiopia’s borders was known to include not only Somalia itself, but also extended to include Madagascar, the Indian Ocean to the East and Sudan to the West. The artificially drawn colonial map has caused a potential crises and a poisoned atmosphere in the region by perpetuating repeated wars between Ethiopia and Somalia.
In the most recent war, Ethiopia was backing up the interim government of Somalia to establish a democratic state .So these two governments want to build a strong economical tie between the two countries and bring a peace to the region once and for all. If Somalia‘s opposition Islamist radical regime won the governing power, then the future of Ethiopia in the Ogaden region could have been questionable. This Islamist radical group has a false image of Ethiopia as a radical Christian land. However Ethiopia has never been one, instead this country can be an example, where Christian and Muslim have lived in harmony for many centuries.
The latest hostility was carried out by the Ogaden Liberation Front (OLF), which is an opposition group backed up by the Islamist radical group, killed 74 civilians Ethiopians and including 9 Chinese of oil field workers in Ogaden. There is an accusation in involvement of Eritrea which is also a rival neighbor country to Ethiopia.
The United Nation and some Western countries are trying to settle peace in the Horn of Africa. However a solution to the conflicts in the Horn that would provide for the lasting peace seems far away.

Gun control and Virginia Tech massacre

On April 16, 2007, a school shooting happened in the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung-Hui Cho, a senior majoring in English, killed 32 people before committing suicide, which is the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. Virginia Tech massacre reopen the debate about the gun control legislation in the Unite States, which has been argued for many years. The history of enacting gun control legislation could be traced back to 1991, when the Sullivan Act was constituted in New York City for a discharged city employee tried to murder Mayor William J. Gaynor. During 1960s, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King led to major revision to federal gun laws. In 1968, the Gun Control Act was enacted to regulate the firearms industry and firearms owners, e.g. it inhibited mail order sales of rifles and shotguns. 1 However, individual gun owners, often led by NRA (National Rifle Association), kept arguing against the gun control regulations. For NRA possesses money, motivated members and powerful allies in Congress, the gun control legislation keeps failing. It seems like the gun control legislation has run into an outrage-action-reaction cyclical pattern.

Supporters of individual gun rights insist the proposal about gun control infringe the law-abiding citizen’s right to self-defense and protect property, which is based on the Second Amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."2 They also point out forbidding the sale of certain types of firearms could not effectively reduce criminal violence. To the contrary, the strong would be able to bully the weak without guns. Thus, widespread gun ownership is one of the best strategies to reduce violence crime.

Supporters of gun control hold that "the Second Amendment pertains only to citizen service in a government-organized and regulated militia".3 For guns are the second leading cause of traumatic death in U.S. with the exception of tabacco, they believe ban on the sale of assault firearms could be useful to prevent criminal purposes or unusual risks to the public, especially keep firearms from being acquired by "high risk" individuals. They also insist that only federal laws can successfully reduce the availability of guns for states with few restrictions could be source of guns that flow into other state with more restrictions.

The debate will keep intense. To supporters of individual gun rights, guns could be used wisely and safely. NRA has provided firearms training course in local shooting club through the states. They believe that if one of the victims in Virginia Tech massacre owns a gun, the casualties could effectively decrease. To supporters of gun control, guns are too accessible, e.g. Cho, a mentally unsound individual could purchase two handguns without any trouble. If the more restriction could be applied to the purchase of firearms, the campus shootings such as Virginia Tech massacre would hardly happen.
