Last night on Frontline: World I saw a program about a micro-lending organization called KIVA where lenders who want to help small businesses in Uganda. Now KIVA is all over the world. All loans have been paid back 100 percent. Visit http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/uganda601/video_index.html to see the video.

The organization is in San Francisco. There is a link to other Frontline programs about Social Entrepreneurs. You need to have your introduction and conclusion written by next week, so at this point I'd suggest KIVA or 100 Families Oakland. You don't have time to keep looking so start. We will meet in the lab tomorrow also to discuss the social entrepreneur project and students who have already done such projects will share.

Homework tonight is to watch the press conference for the Rutgers Women's Basketball team. It was conducted yesterday and you can watch it here. There are two parts. Post the short essay (250 words) here. It is due by midnight.

Here is an interview with Imus and Rev. Al Sharpton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5JdJnltdRg&mode=related&search=

I found some really interesting responses to Imus' comments and what should happen to him. Rev. Sharpton said the girls could forgive him, but forgiveness doesn't mean there are no consequences. Rev. Sharpton's analogy to his being stabbed by someone when he was protesting for civil rights, did not mean he didn't expect the man to do prison time was a great example of one accepting the consequences for one's actions, good or bad. If Imus didn't want to eventually lose his job he shouldn't have made these type of comments about black women not once, twice, but at least four times, according to the Leheur News Hour interview with journalist Clarence Page on Monday, April 9.

The question I want you to answer is: What is the temperature of the nation around comments like the newscasters? Should he resign or get fired? Why or why not?

By the way, this week is the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's integration of the baseball league.

The comments that were made by Don Imus in his nationally aired program have made many people angry. Alot of people have called for his firing even though he has apologized. Many people point at the fact that this is not the first time that he makes degrading comments about women. He has talked about Venus and Serena, the tennis players, and also about Mia Angelo. In my opinion Don Imus should be fired as he has no intention of resigning, because his comments have made many people angry and it needs to be demonstrated that when people make racial derogatory comments there will be consequences.

In his morning show Don Imus made comments about the Rutgers Women Basketball team. The team is mostly made up of African American women. They became NCAA women's basketball champions which was a huge accomplishment. Unfortunatly all this was dwarfed by the remarks made by Imus. There is no way that he should be allowed to get away with what he said. In my mind he intended to hurt people when he said what he said. I believe the reaction that this issue has received shows that people are upset. The only way to make things right here is for him to get fired.

Today it was said that Don Imus's simulcast which airs on MSNBC will be taken of the air permanently. This was a big decision for the network as Imus's show is very well watched. In my opinion this hurts only ratings because Imus's will not lose much. His main income is his radio show. Unfortunatly he is a big enough celebrity to where apparently he can't be fired. Perhaps I'm speaking to soon, and he will get fired. I do believe that if ever someone was to get fired for such an incident it should be this guy. He has a history of doing this and this is the first time he has been punished. I believe this is the reason he felt he could get away with calling people "nappy headed ho's".

The comments made by big time radio and talk show host, Don Imus, were by far inappropriate, unacceptable, and racist. On his April 4th show, Don Imus elicited an uproar after referring to the Rutgers Women Basketball Team as “nappy headed ho’s,” “jiggaboos,” and “wannabes.” These racial comments have stirred up much outrage, with heated people calling into the television and radio network trying to get Mr. Imus fired.

Literally, many celebrities get away with murder. For example, the racial comment the guy on Grey’s Anatomy made; OJ Simpson and his case; our Governor making comments with the Mexicans and the borders. I’ve noticed that every time when a racial comment is made, the person who made that comment would just come out and make a public apology and that would be the end of it. I don’t think that its fair to the people in which the comment were directed to because these comments can cause damage to that particular individual. It may even lower that individual’s self esteem. Therefore, I personally think that Mr. Imus should resign or get fired, not because this is his first time making racial slurs but for his repeated offense. Although he took stance at apologizing to Rutgers Women Basketball Team, I don’t think it is enough. He should take the initiative and resign instead. Like Reverend Al Sharpton said, during the interview with Matt Lauer and Don Imus on NBC Today, “he must serve the penalty that is commensurable to what he did.”

It has been announced today that both CBS and MSNBC will suspend Don Imus for two weeks. “I take no joy in this. It’s not a particularly happy moment, but it needed to happen,” said the President of NBC News, Steve Capus. “I can’t ignore the fact that there is a very long list of inappropriate comments, of inappropriate banter, and it has to stop.” I’m glad that these television and radio networks are taking actions in suspending Imus from the program. His current consequences for making these comments are his suspension, but hopefully he will eventually get fired. Let’s just see.

The comments that where made by the newscaster Don Immus, hurt many people around the nation. By saying a racist comment towars colored women. As you may have heard this was not the first time that he made rascist comments about colored people. So that obviously means that he has some kind of hatred for colored people in his heart.

I understand that he has apoligized but how many times can you apoligize for the same thing. I believe that he only apoligized because he said it on national television and now the whole world knows how he feels. He tried to say that it was ok in a way because he kept going on about how he always makes fun of people on the show and thats what the show is mainly about. Wll if a show is going to hurt our feelings then the show is not necessery.

He commented on the Rutgers Women's Basketball team. He had the ability to say that they were "NAPPY HEADED HOE'S". Is that how he feels about colored women. And I don't think that there's not an apology in the world that can be accepted by anyone who had the ability to say that. That is a personal feeling towards a person and he can't apologize about how he really feels about a person.
So therefore, I believe that Don Immus should be fired. Because that is unacceptable and hurtful towards all women not just colored women. He is getting suspended from the show for two weeks and I think that it should be perminate.

Last Wednesday, newscaster Don Imus made a very racist remark to the Rutgers Woman Basketball Team. The comment that Imus said was “Nappy headed ho’s!” Ever since last Wednesday, this has been catching millions of people attention nationwide. Racism has been a problem for centuries, and for a man (Don Imus) newscaster to announce that live, that is just disrespecting all colored people.

Although Imus has apologized for what he had said I feel that Imus only said what he said out of force. I don’t feel that Imus is trying to apologize because he doesn’t want to jeopardize his job as a newscaster. While watching the you tube clip, I was amaze that he still dares to still deny his intentions.

Imus is now suspended but truthfully I believe Imus should be fire! He should be fired because this is not the first time that Imus has made racist remarks to colored people, if Imus is granted to stay with the company and keep his jobs; they are basically saying “it is ok to make racist comments on TV (live). It is ok to make rude comments towards woman.” America should not allow that, we are all equal and if someone makes a mistake he has to suffer the consequences.

Re:Don Imus

This day in age, the nature of making racist remarks, generalizations, and stereotypes is known to be immoral and unjust. The issue that racism still exists, most often is not discussed and is usually left as a private internal feeling which is either secretly suppressed or ignored. Although the race card is not often played, when offensive comments are made public they usually have a negative effect on people causing temperatures to flare and the validity of civil rights to be questioned.

In the case of Don Imus, and his demeaning reference to the women of the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed ho's",a stand against his unjust act was taken. A public outcry for the firing of Don Imus was taken and in the end Don Imus suspended and then finally fired. Although, Imus apologized to the players his apology reportedly seemed to be insufficient and emotionless.

It is very disheartening, for me to think about the sexist and racist comment that Imus made, and I believe that the action taken against him was necessary. The fact that Imus' misconduct and misrepresntable behavior; a reflection on MSNBC, was not dismissed and taken account for shows that society is becoming more aware and adverse to racist exploitations.

In the end, justice was served for the Rutgers team, but the outcome is probably that the women's sense of pride and dignity has been lost in the current of society. The question of whether or not the women portrayed have been recompensed enough is one of my concerns, and among other concerns of mine I question my own self-worth and wonder if I am accepted or am I going to be looked at from now on as a nappy-headed ho because of the influence that one radio personality may have had on society.

The comments made by newscaster Don Immus were simply unprofessional and out of context. I think as human beings we all need to be honest with ourselves and admit that we are all prejudice is some way towards certain religions, sex, race, nationality, physical appearance etc. But I do feel that as a public figure those opinions and prejudices should stay personal. On the other hand I also wonder how much freedom of speech should we have? What can we publicly criticize and what can’t we?. I do not know what else can be done besides apologizing for the spoken words. I do no think being fire will take the pain of the basketball players back. People are nevertheless entitle to their opinions.

I also saw on the news that they had a dinner with Immus’s wife at his house were he personally apologized for his words. He was also fire form the radio stations were he had been working for over 20 years. I think that is a good enough punishment.

I think that the temperature of this nation is pretty hot. I believe that our nation is full of ridiculous talk show. Many of these talk shows use racial remarks to people in our society. I think that newscasters make many remarks that are very unprofessional. One of those newscasters is Mr. Imus. Mr. Imus is very unprofessional and used many racial comments to the 10 women on the basketball team. These 10 women have accomplished so much. According to the newscast they’re brilliant, and gifted. No one in the country believed in them, but them. That’s what counts. They had to experience racist, sexual remarks made by Mr. Imus. The coach for the basketball team named C. Vivian Stringer had experienced racial remarks when she was a teen. She felt what these girls feel, and held a conference in regarding these remarks, and she was personally offended. "These women on the basket-ball team come to get an education, and use their gifts for all to see. Young women that little girls look up to," explained C. Vivian Stringer. Stringer made it clear that these people need to stop and reflect what they're doing. I believe that the girls on the basketball team should forgive Mr. Imus, but that he should face some in depth consequences. I think he should get fired. I think that the comments were totally in appropriate, and these 10 girls on the basketball team are innocent young ladies trying to make a good life. I believe he should be fired because he was very unprofessional, and these girls can then move on. It will show a little respect for our society, and maybe newscasters, and radio dj's can think about what they say on air.. Some of the actions are inappropriate for air.

Fire Don Imus

Don Imus is an American writer, radio and television talk show host. On April 4, 2007, he referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" during a MSNBC radio talk show about the N.C.A.A. Women’s Basketball Tournament. On April 6, Imus apologized for his “an insensitive and ill-conceived remark”. On April 11, NBC canceled Don Imus' radio show after, effective immediately, after a public outrage about Imus’ racist and sexist comment.1 However, these remarks ignited a national debate on race relations.

In my opinion, the Imus comment is offensive on many levels and he should be fired. Firstly, the obvious racism is horrific. Racism is a kind of prejudice or discrimination based on the concept of race, which actually is defined by cultural traits and not by biological ones. Racism transgresses the 1776 Declaration of Independence, the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the citizen, the 1866 Fourteenth Amendment, the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the 1967 Equal Pay Act, and so on, which all point out “all men are created equal”.2 Imus’ comment markedly violate the social equalities of all races, which refer to the equality of social status, achievement or treatment.

Secondly, beside the racism, his words were also sexist. He insulted a group of girls who were striving for their goal with strength, agility and witness. The tone of his voice sounded like a emperor was mocking his subjects. This is not a happenstance but a reflection of common social problem. All cross the states women have to work by a different standard. They are often underpaid and underestimated, even doing same jobs. It is the time to examine the depth and width of racism. Evading could not help to solve the problem.

Additionally, no one has the right to abuse “free speech”. Freedom of speech means to speak what you think or what you feel freely without censorship. Free speech is absolutely important. People should be able to express their opinions. However, there is a line for the media. The media must consider the social and moral impact as they report some particular stories. Free speech doesn’t give you the right to override the feelings of other people. For example, criticize religions is the abuse of free speech, which will really offend religious believers.

Taking in about what we have talked about above, I thought NBC should fire Don Imus immediately for he made such a racist and sexist slur. It's vile, hateful, and disgusting. This kind of voice shouldn’t exist on our media. Moreover, he also got across the bottom line of media for he abused the right of free speech. Thus, he was not qualified to be a host of radio talk show any more.
