Today in class we listened to Obama read the preface from his book, Dreams from My Father.Post the summaries here. Tomorrow's homework is to bring in a copy of a summary of the Introduction of Dreams. You will post these summaries tomorrow. If you'd like to post them today, I will add a link.
In the second hour we defined both summary and paraphrase. A paraphrase is a restatement in one's own words the text and intent of a document or discourse. A summary is a "concise restatement of the key points or ideas in the text or discourse." We also talked about the difference between a summary and a paraphrase.
If your group completed the summary, you can post it here. If not, you can post your own. Feel free to use any language from the class discussion or notes on the board. Please respond to a classmate's summary with your thoughts.

Group summary to preface of “Dreams from my father” English 1a 9-10 1/26/09
Barack Obama began writing “Dreams from My Father” in 1995. He lays out a backdrop that affected and influenced what he wrote. These influences include everything from his marriage, his law practice, all the way to his senate seat. Obama mentions the terror attacks of September 11th which in turn brings light to not only the terror in the Middle East but also the terrors in out our cities. Though he highlights his backdrop between the years of 1994 and 2004 the issues are still relevant. These issues also continue to impact our country and world today. We can learn from history just as Obama learned from his mother’s history. His mother was an inspiration that lead him to conquer issues, opinions, and ideals.

In the preface of "Dreams from My Father" written by Barack Obama, he conveys his life experiences before as well as during the time he writes his personal memoir. Obama had time to write this book when he was a student in law school at Harvard. As a first-time writer he had many hopes and fears of the success of his book. The years following when he published his first book include great acomplishments. He was involved in many activities such as running a voter registration project, teaching at the Universities of Chicago, as well as maintaining his personal life. In 1996 he decided to run for a seat in the state legislature - which he won. Obama found winning a seat in state legislature, and state senator difficult as he had many obstacles to over come compared to the average competitor. He was considered a long shot as he was a African American with no extreme personal wealth.

Group Summarization:
In 1995, Barrack Obama released the book, "Dreams from My Father," a poignant look at his own unique journey through a strange world. Only just having entered his 30's, Obama, already an eloquent speaker, takes us alongside a reflective look back at his life, giving light to things that made him and the things that would come to shape him. Barrack Obama was born son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, whom he had never truly known. Thus Obama, like many other children from broken homes, would walk down a lonely road carrying a heavy head swirling with questions. Perhaps most salient were the questions of his father, his racial identity, and ultimately his purpose in this world. Upon completing college, Obama would become a community organizer in Chicago and later on becoming the first black president of the Harvard Law Review among a slew of other future successes. Obama would also suffer from the biting sting of personal tragedy having to endure the deaths of both his father and his mother and also later the world-shaking catastrophe that would forever stain the day 9-11, redefining the country he lived in and worked to improve, however setting the ideal ground for what would cause him to be seen as the fitting leader to help guide us through this new adversity as President of the United States.
In Barack Obama’s book, “Dreams of My Father, “ he reflects in his 2004 preface changes in his life and the world since 1995 when the book was first published. He thought the book would not succeed, that his story was not worth anything. As he looks back re-reading parts, he wants to edit and change the book. He reflects on the context the book was written in; Silicon Valley, Mandela’s release, the changes in his family; a new house, his children, his law practice, and seat in the senate. In the end he reflects on the great impact his mother had on him, while living and in death.

In Barack Obama's prefaces Obama states that although his book was written in 1995, when world issues were completely different then today, the meaning of his book remains the same. Although he has changed as a person and has gone through countless changes: having a family, buying a house, practicing law, teaching and being elected to senate, he draws a comparison between the terror we see in the world event, such as 9/11 and terror Americans see every day in the streets of many American cities. He also mentions that his mother was a great inspiration to him, always reminding him of how important it is to be a good person and have moral values.

In Barack Obama’s book “dreams of my father” he reflects in his 2004 preface about changes in his life and in the world since the early 1900’s. He thought his book wouldn’t do well because he felt that he didn’t have anything worth saying but actually the book did well. After that he accomplished many things such as running a voter registration project in the 1992 election cycle, beginning a civil rights practice, and teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago. He was also blessed with two children and a wife, a family. He writes about his political status and 9/11 and how it affected other countries. He had an audience to read parts of the book he had begun writing, his mother. He felt that if his mother wouldn’t have passed away he would have written a different book, more about her than a person that wasn’t in his life.

Response to my classmate "Marvelous Marvin"on summary of "Dreams from My Father"
Fellow classmate,
I'd just like to say, after the hard time I had getting connected to the internet via my laptop; reading your group summary of just "you" was dynomite! It gave a brief yet paraphrasing summary in your own words that made me remember more of the actual preface written by our now President Obama. I don't know when the jubilation and the exileration of saying or writing his name will wear off, but in the meantime; I am shoutin' it from the rooftops!I only hope that by the end of this semester, I too, will be able to summarize or rather paraphrase writers' essays in my own words so eloquently! Really enjoyed it.

Preface summary
Barack Obama opens the preface by explaining why wrote, Dreams from My Father. He had been elected as the president of the Harvard Law Review; since he was the first African American to hold this position, the publisher thought it would be a good idea to tell the story of his family. In the same manner they wanted to explain how American history had affected them.
Nine years later, as he wins the US senator seat for the Democratic Party he’s encourage to the re-publication of this book, given that he is the third African American to have a seat in the Senate in the history of U.S. Reding what he has written so many years ago, he starts criticizing his own work; so the editing started. The first step was cutting the book by fifty pages. In this editing he realizes how his new political views are affecting this new draft of the book.
After describing all his political concerns, he describes the love for his mother. Who helped him; in a great way developing this project. He also enlightens the admiration he feels for her and how she remains present even after her death.

page 1 Preface Summary
Thank you for voting me as president. I thank Bush for his help in our transition. I am the 44th president, and the oath has been uttered during times of both peace and violence. It is no news that we as Americans are going through rough times. We've been at war with a massive organization. Our economy is in the gutter due to conceited Wall St. bankers, there are massive layoffs and foreclosures nationwide, public health is too expensive, and our public education system is a joke. We were once a noble and powerful nation, not that we aren't now, mind you, but our golden days never followed us out of the 80's.

Pg 3 Summary
With the economy of today in such a crisis we will have to be smart about the money we spend or give away, by the time we master this we will recover our trust with each other. Even when we master this it can spin out of control like a monster tornado and create havoc in the economy once more. Our Founding Father wrote a charter to protect us from great things which we will have to face now. Fore example our elders have had to face fascism and communism with firepower, but they also had to fight with there word which is the only gun we should use in a fight. Our fight might still be over seas, but we can't have this fight any more we must finish as fast a possible and get them out now. With this finally note we must join together regardless of race and finish this crisis and go back to the great America which we once where.
