Best of Stewart Pidd

I have asked certain students to post certain essays here, so students can see successful writing strategies for Possessives, Bad Granny, and Parallel Structure.

Pidd’s Lousy Synopsis of

Ludville’s Lethal Lions

The authors, Gary Pollit and Craig Bakers, of Stewart Pidd Hates English offer guidelines and rules to help writers with possessive nouns. In a sentence possessive nouns show who owns something or someone. Possessive nouns are formed by adding -’s or just and apostrophe to the original noun. Possessive pronouns indicate ownership and require no additional –s or an additional apostrophe. Writers must add an -’s when they are changing a singular noun into a plural possessive noun. Nouns that are already plural but do not end in –s also require an additional -’s. An -’s is also added to singular nouns ending in –s. However, when a plural noun ends in –s the writer only needs to add an apostrophe to the end of the noun. When a compound possessive noun expresses shared ownership -’s is added to the last noun. In Stewart Pidd’s essay, “The Land That Is Ludville” there are five (three significant) possessive noun errors, Pidd needs to study possessive nouns and revise his essay.

Pidd stumbles when punctuation a singular possessive noun ending in –s. He writes, “Lois’ cruel nature” (2). Pidd omits the letter –s from the possessive noun. The cruel nature belongs to Lois. The singular noun, “Lois” ends in –s. When a singular noun ends in –s the writer must add an apostrophe and an additional –s. To correct this sentence Pidd must add an additional –s. The corrected sentence will read, “Lois’s cruel nature.”

Pidd errs when he incorrectly punctuates a plural possessive noun ending in –s. Pidd writes, “Lud’s petting zoo” (2). Pidd misplaces the apostrophe between the letter –d and the letter –s. The petting zoo belongs to the Lud family. The plural noun “Luds” ends in –s. Plural nouns that end in –s only need an apostrophe at the end. To eliminate the error Pidd must move the apostrophe from between the –d and the –s to after the –s. The corrected phrase will read, “Luds’ petting zoo.”

Pidd incorrectly punctuates a compound possessive. He writes, “Mr. and Mrs. Lud’s lives” (2). Pidd makes an error by not adding an apostrophe and another –s after “Mr. Lud.” Two lives are lost indicating that the subjects do not share joint possession. When a compound possessive in a sentence does not share possession, each object in the sentence requires an apostrophe followed by the letter –s. To correct the error Pidd must add an apostrophe and the letter –s after Mr. Lud. The corrected sentence will read, “Mr. Lud’s and Mrs. Lud’s lives.”

Pidd’s failure to use possessive nouns and pronouns correctly suggests he needs to review possessive noun rules and correct his essay. Instead of searching for Mr. and Mrs. Lud’s lost child Pidd needs to search his grammar reference guides and review his knowledge of possessive nouns.

Pidd makes an error by incorrectly placing the verb before the subject in a sentence. He writes, “There is rumors going around Ludville” (1). Even though the verb comes before the subject, it still must agree with its subject. To fix his error Pidd can replace the be verb “is” with the be verb “are.” The corrected sentence will read, “There are rumors going around Ludville.”
