“Not Enough”

This theme of not being enough is really a universal one; you see it played out again and again in music, television, literature, movies. I don’t think it’s specific to one generation or culture or time period. It seems like a human thing. We all deal with it differently but I’ve never actually read/heard anyone talk about it like (Felicia) Pride. The “warped Goldilocks complex” is a phrase I’ve actually used to describe my own wants/needs from others and theirs from me.
---------------------------------
I agree with what your [sic] saying; everyone at some time or another has felt as though they aren’t enough. People may or may not talk about it but its [sic] a common feeling.

“Express Yourself”

Pride is writing about how listening to hip-hop gave her the validation she needed as a “little brown girl” to share her thoughts and ideas with the world. I am somewhat ashamed to say that most of my exposure to literature has been through the D.W.E.M.’s (Dead White English Males). But (Charles) Dickens puts me to sleep and hip-hop (along with other kinds of music) can make a bad day a great one. We can be united in freedom of expression and the pursuit of “dope songs." In short: express ourselves.

Express yourself
At sometime in our lives we let others tell us what we should do instead of following our own inner voice. Meanwhile feelings are suppressed and are not dealt with, from fear of being disappointed, hurt and shamed. It is always wise to be true to yourself and express what you feel. Different forms of art create geniuses everyday. I say what ever your passion is go for it!

"Express Yourself"

Anyone that can express theirself to me is a person able to grasp the concept of individuality. I think one reason why I can understand people is because I am an artist. I can express myself through music, poems, and stories. I love being able to do that, because a person can read something you wrote, or hear something you said in a song, and somehow feel connected to me. No matter whether they know me or not, that is the beauty in art. A person might break an entry, and tag a wall or building. To the law, it is a crime done by a "foolish" criminal. To that same criminal, it can be a piece of art. It can be what saved them from killing someone. Often times when Im mad or frustrated, I can channel that energy into written art.

" Not Enough "

I feel this reading, because I used to think that I wasn't enough. I had to slow myself down, so i could feel no emptiness. That is what it is that makes a person feel like they are not enough. I realized how close I was to myself, when I stood alone. I had to do that to break that feeling, feeling like a blind woman alone in the dark. Knowing that i am the best, now i know that percieved limitations have no power over me, because i expect little out of myself. It is my self-confidence that makes me a strong person, because I have had people not believe in me and put me down. Going thru so much made me feel like i was unstoppable. As you can see its true, i seen it all, and i been through the worst. I feel that it is only good times left for me, but thats how it is when you've seen the bottom. So for whoever feel im not good enough, that sound like a personal problem, and it sounds like they could never be the definition of solitude.

Felicia Pride “Not Enough”

People feel as if they never have enough. They always want more than they are given and once they receive what they want they are still unsatisfied. We should not worry so much about whether we are enough for other people or not, because inevitably we will never fully amount to what someone expects from us. In “Not Enough” the thesis is, “The fact is blatant we will never be able to satisfy everyone. This is proven by the writer saying how the world is in a Goldilocks complex. They feel as if things will always be just right and the way they want them. Another example is of the authors friend. She said no matter how much she would chores around the house she would perform he would never be happy with the effort she put forth. The authors proves her point time and time again.

Felicia Pride “Express Yourself”

In the story the author speaks of her own journey through life and how she expresses herself through rapping hip-hop. She encourages others to express their own stories, even thought it may be hard at first. Early on she did not necessarily know how to express her own story. As she went through life the rhythm to which she now raps came to her and allowed her to be who she is today. She was not alone in her feelings of insecurity. Many people know not how to show how the emotions they feel, but she encourages people to disregard these insecurities and to express themselves for who they are.

"Not Enough" by Felicia Pride

I have the same questions that she asks in her writing. Are we spoiled? Can we be happy with what we have at that very moment without wanting anything else? Do you want certain things for yourself or because other people want it for you? For me, I work hard for myself, and if in the process it makes someone else happy, great. As we grow older, I think we start realizing that you can make yourself happy and achieve your goals without being viewed as selfish.

Pride points out that she connects with music she listens to.. There are many different ways to express yourself and everyone deserves to tell their story or feelings. No one should feel that their life isn’t important enough to be hear. Expressing yourself is a way to connect with people because there might be other people who know how you feel of have been through the same situation as you.

Response:
That’s one of the many truths that exist about a lot of animals (not just humans). That’s all we ever do even from day one. We take and take and still have the audacity to want even more. Then, when it’s our turn to give, it’s too much for us. We scream to the skies (or to god or whoever will listen) and tell it that everyone is leaving us dry. That we care so much for everyone but barely anyone gives us anything back. When it is anyone else that is generous to give even a little bit of support, it’s not enough. That’s why, even if it is subconscious, we make ourselves be pitied. Even then, however, people will get pissed off at you if they catch on that you pity them. They’ll act all dignified and shit and then ask you to help them leave you. It happens with other animals too. As soon as you give them a different habitat or something of the sort, they’ll refuse to go back to living like they used to. They get used to their “new” life. Like the many people out there that are complaining about Obama. “He ain’t black! He’s bi-racial.” Bullshit.
Erik’s Response: It seems you have a good understanding of the story. You explained the pain he was feeling. I believe people always try to act perfect but it never happens.

Not enough
Being a man is not easy, like the person in felicia pride's work that performed.Yet the example of the woman is strong. So strong that any woman can relate to the feeling of not satisfying her companion. A woman can pull together a good meal, finish chores and all house duties only to find that she has to be cute scrubbing the bathtub and sweeping the kitchen. It is impossible to please everyone. One can only do their best and that should be enough for anyone. Where as if the person doesn't try at all frustration builds instead of satisfaction.

Express yourself by felicia pride
Arist know that their music to become a new sensation they have to interpret their public. By doing so, thier public can feel related to their musuc. Yet I believe that to be too general. one has to create their own music ,own rythm, own hook in accordance to ones life. That is teh only way to be understood. Everyone is diffrent and everyone has a story to tell. Don't hesitate to say how you feel ,who you are and what you want. If you express yourself those around you learn about you specifically, the real you. Not an image created from a first impression. Whether it is a poem,a song,a rhyme or a book it is you and you will be known as you are. NOt more not less ,not falsely but you as sincere as your own being.

Free Write: Express Yourself
“Express yourself” by Felicia Pride is a persuasive story that tells its readers to not hide themselves and their story but to instead just express themselves. This reminds me of times that I am in a new environment such as a new class, I don’t speak; I complete all of my class work and homework but I hardly participate because I’m not comfortable. But its different when I actually know people or even just get to know others, I am myself again; I am the talkative, thoughtful and humorous Shay that expresses herself whenever she feels it’s necessary. This is one reason why I constantly sit in different seats around the room everyday; so I can meet new people and become comfortable so I can be myself.

Free Write: Not Enough

In my opinion I would say that I agree with what the author is saying. It's impossible to please the whole crowd. Everybody has their own personal thought on a situation. That's just human nature to have an ego that will never be satisfied. Some evidence from Not Enough that was also in the free write was that humans are insatiable. The Thesis of this article is that we will never be able to satisfy everyone.

Free Write: "Express Yourself" by Felicia Pride

I like what the author is saying about expressing yourself. Everyone has their own personal way of expressing themselves. It could be through music, art, or dance these are just a few of the many methods of self expression. To me expressing yourself in music is very important. There are a lot of artists out there that talk about doing certain things but in reality that is not true. They portray an image, that the media wants them to show instead of being real with themselves. This is self expression at its worst. Yes, these artists may have the money and the fame but is the cost of being fake to yourself really worth it?

Not Enough (Free Write)

I know that we are all human beings and that we don’t always know what we want, but it is important to know what you want for yourself. I don’t think other opinion’s matter too much, unless it is positive or encouraging. What’s most important is living life in a way that is good for you and suits you well. I think that satisfying others is too much work, and sometimes, it is still not good enough for them. Therefore, it is best that we just think for ourselves and the people that accept us just the way we are. Sometimes, it is not about changing who we are, but more of what we do.

Express Yourself by Felicia Pride (Free Write)

Expressing yourself is important in your everyday life because it comes in many different forms. In today’s world, people express themselves through style, language, art or just by communicating. I feel that people constantly have opinions and thoughts about things that they feel strongly about, which is another way to express themselves. It is important because you have more ideas about who you are and where you stand.

Not Enough (Free Write)

In response to the piece "Not Enough" by Felicia Pride, I can say that I agree. You cant please everyone, but I am guilty of trying to keep everyone happy, only to hurt myself in the end when they're not happy. Me pleasing everyone may not be a physical thing because I can say that I am comfortable in my own skin, but mentally and emotionally I still try to please the people around me with the things that I do and the decisions that I make. I can say that lately I have grasped the concept of living for me and pleasing my ownself and have found that I am happier.

Express Yourself (Free Write)

Today would be the day im asked to express myself. I have the worst headache and alot on my mind. I'm exhausted and all I want to do is sleep. I still have to look for a place to live and a ton of homework starting to roll in. I can say this, I'm ready for things to start looking up for me again. I guess I have to practice this patience thing alot more. But seeing that my mind is a thousand places at once I'm going to have to end this freewrite a little early, but before I do, I must say, the writing by Felicia Pride was "dope." I've never known who she was up until this class but I could see myself purchasing some of her material.

i fell the message is that people need to do exactly what the song say's, 'express yourself" do something that makes you happy. break away from doing the same daily routine, and be a an individual. Felcia expressed her self through writing and hip hop music. it makes her happy. i feel if we all do something to express our selves in a healthy way we will all be happier. felcia is a good example of some one who understands self expression

(not enough)
i can relate to this story , i always feel like there is more that i can accomplish, and no matter what i do, im still miles from my goals. im sure everyone felt this way at some point. but what is must important is not to feel unsatisfied with your self because you are trying to please others.

Felicia Pride talks about how hip hop motivated her to do better in school. Studying about hip hop let her to her rapidly increased on her reading and writting skills. This let to her teachers to have a great inpression on her improving reading and writting skills, futhermore Felicia was achieves good grades.
Then she talks about how not only the rappers, but ingeneral people make mistakes and learn from them, thus succed in their lifes.Eventually this people that learn from wrong to right, become succesful people of great importance. Some of them helped the needed while others just dont and thats why they gettho will never end.
Felicias also talks about how thoughts and ideas matter to be able to help developed her voice so that it can be heard.
i agree with felicia that if we dont speak up we will never be heard and also we will never suceed.

It's crazy how so many girls, young ladies, women of all different ages deal with the same general problem; not feeling good enough. I've gone my whole life complaining about at least one thing about myself, daily. Hair is too straight, now days it's too wavy but not curly enough or straight enough. Butt is too small, butt is too big. Chest is too small, chest is too big. Feet too puffy, feet too bony. My entire life has been about what's wrong with me.
Ever since my step mom, Thea, came into my life things have changed. People think it's weird when i call her mom cause she's dark and I'm not. But the truth is she raised me to be the strong person I am today. And she's still raising me to become stronger. She is and always will be my mom, the woman who taught me to be okay with what I have.

"New Orleans Is Sinking":TRAGICALLY HIP

Bourbon blues on the street loose and complete
Under skies all smoky blue-green
I can Forksake the dixie dead shake
So we dance the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom What's wrong? What's Going On
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said" Hey North you're south shut you big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about those years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had my hands in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the Lord above and said hey man thanks
Sometimes I feel so good I gotta scream
She says Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said I swear to God she said

My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim
Responce:
This song shows the way people feel now that the hurricane katrina has happened and what they are doing now. saome people are suffering so bad that they're ready to just give up. These people have been through so much and they are tired. they said '
new Orleans is fludding, and they don't want to swim," this shows that people are ready to give up and there sick and tired of living this way but at th same time some ae still trying to live the best way they can.

Anaya Odom - Response

I read a couple of peoples response to the poem "Not Enough", from what i read, everybody seems to feel mutual. At some point in time we all have felt like we were not good enough. This is a problem, that many face , it makes me wonder if their will ever be a solution. One reason i think we could agree why many of us dont feel appreciated is, because we are not told that we are beautiful or smart enough. Alot of times, i think we let society's idea of beauty become our's, instead of finding our inner beauty and conveying it.

"Not Enough" by Felecia Pride

This reading was a very educated one. Felecia told a good story - making the thesis of the story vividly clear; It's impossible to completely satisfy people - Do what you're doing and do what you can". She brought up many good examples. Here's one, in the reading she wrote "a girlfriend joke with me that she can cook, clean, submit, fry chicken Butterball-naked, serve it to her man, allow him to watch the game, and still he wouldn't be satisfied. Instead, the chicken would be too salty". Obviously her man wasn't very appreciative, he could've easily said thank you. The girlfriend had put a huge amount of effort to please him and yet there's no sign of appreciation. Everybody can relate to this feeling she explains because it happens everyday. People are not giving or receiving enough recognition for their effort - which they clearly deserve. No matter how hard others try to please another, it is never truly enough. Satisfactory is linear; it is also something that can chronically be addictive. the more they get satisfactory, the more they want it.

I believe that expressing one self is a great way to get in touch with their inner self. By expressing themselves, they are telling who they really are. There are many ways of expressing one self. Some do it by poems, lyrics, writing, singing, music, ect. Everyone have there own ways of dealing with problems. I believe that nobody is satisfied with what they have because of the media. The media always have something to advertise which influenced everyone to want more then what they already have. If they push it to the side one time, they will see what they already have and appreciate what they were given rather then complain about what more then want.
