Discussion about "Half the Sky"

Today we followed the literature circles and discussed the "Half the Sky" in class. Cortny loazno was the discussion director, Joshsa Duong was the Summarizer, I was the connector, Summera was the vocabulary enricher, and Andrw Yount was the literary luminary. Our discussion started with developing a list of questions which our group intersted in. For example, we talked about chapter four a woman said,"I should not have been beaten, because I was always obedient and did what my husband said. But if the wife is truly disobendient, then of course her husband has to beat her."(p69)In short, women themselves absord and transmit misogynistic values, just as men do. This example show us that the important point is people's mentality.

Literature Circles

Our group has assigned the post as follows:
James Barker: Director, Clarifier
Edith Gonzalez: Summarizer, Vocabulary Enricher
Peter Kortmann: Investigator, Travel Tracer
Ahu Yildirim: Literary Luminary
Jennie Lo: Connector

Today, our group continues to abstract the stories in Half the Sky and share individual feeling. We all agree education is one of the important tools to help the developing countries and also feel the difference culture makes it very difficult for us to delivery our willingness to help. We brought up the conversation between Nick and a group of female Saudi doctors and nurses in Riyadh about women’s right, they bristled, “Why do foreigners always ask about clothing?” “Why does it matter so much what we wear?” They are right; we, in America, really don’t know what exactly they want. However, we feel more education will be a very positive weapon to fight for the positive direction. Edith said she liked the 34 Million Friends in the book. Yes, this is definitely a light part of the book, and I liked this part too. I hope our group can come up with a name shortly.

Today in class, we discuss Half a Sky in our groups. My group we use movies and anything’s we saw on TV or just something we heard about and tied it back to the book. For instance, I brought up how I watch a movie called American Pimps and they talk about how pimps control there woman; much like the people who ran the brothels pimps beat their woman or give their woman drugs to relax. In the movie, a few pimps had young girls out there selling themselves and a lot of them be around the ages of 13 like in Half a Sky.

Today in class we discussed chapters 5-8 in our group. We talked about women should be educated in small village like in chapter six in Ethiopia. A thirteen year old girl named Mahabouba had to married a sixty year old man. Later she got pregnant and she did not know how to take care of herself. She was very young and also her body was not fully developed and later the baby died. One of our group members raised a question like “Should a woman be beaten when she does something wrong?” I do not think so because she should be given a second chance and someone should talk to her.

The purpose of the literature circle is just to make sure we touch base with all aspects of each chapter. Usually, when people talk about a book, they usually just talk about what happened in that chapter. Having an organized group, makes it so that, the group, as a whole, can make sure they discuss, not just the summary, but also themes, connections, and everything in between.

Today in class we met in our Lit circle groups. We picked our jobs and reflected on the chapters we had read for homework. It really helped meeting in a group to discuss our thoughts in an organized manner so everyone's voice was heard and it wasn't complete chaos as we had order.
When a question was raised we all took turns answering it in our own opinion to the best of our abilities.

Our group assigned positions as follows; Edith is the summarizer and vocabulary enricher, Peter is the travel tracer and investigator, Jenni is the connector, while Ahu took the role of literary luminary. James (myself) has the responsibility of discussion director and clarifier. This was our first day as a group so we didn’t come up with a group name. We were very involved with discussing the book and the emotions that surfaced up when we as individuals read the book. The groups’ conversation swiftly flowed in the direction of the solution. And how we as human beings felt that could impact the lives of the women, not just in the book but all over the world. Everyone in our group made some very great points and expressed genuine concern about how we can be a part of the solution in this world wide issue of abused woman and neglected women. I look forward to our future conversations and am extremely happy to be involved with such a great group of individuals.

Today in our group discussion we organize the duties of each member. Once we organize who was going to be in charge of each roll we began to discuss the chapters we had to read. We start with chapter 5 and I being the discussion director started the discussion with a topic of the chapter that caught my attention. The part the really stood out was when the 16 yr old soldiers would rape the young girls in Congo. It was terrible what they did to these girls, with sticks in knives, I started to ask my group what they thought about it and we came up with good points as a group. One or are group member began to discuss the overall reasons he believed that these third world countries were so poor and that the only way they saw of making money is prostituting or trafficking, a point that we all agreed on as a group. We didn’t get a chance to discuss more about the other chapters as much as we like due to the time. But over our entire group did a lot better in our discussion than how it went about our first time.

Today in our literature groups we started out by going over who was assigned to what job. After this we started with chapter 5 going through chapter 6. This was due to the short time that we had in class, and the many opinions that my fellow students seemed to have. This is only because not everyone in the group had gone beyond chapter 8. Although there were a few people who had read far beyond the required reading. When we started chapter 5, which the discussion was lead by crystal, and i being the person who found the vocabulary that was difficult to understand. Chapter 5 was really horrible and hard to talk about. It had to do with the "honor" raping, and raping girls in the name of god. The worst part in my opinion is when the book mentions how the congo people would rape women with knifes ( OUCH!! ) and sticks. That makes my stomach turn and i wish i had some power to help these woman. No woman should ever go through a event as tragic as that. Overall i believe that this group discussion went very well.

I joined the literature circle late and was left with slim pickings, but I walked away with the travel tracer job. The travel Tracer keeps the group up to date on the different settings and what affects it has on culture and things taking place in the society. I was assigned the role of investigator as my second job which is to “dig up some background information” on certain topics in the book. James did an excellent job of directing the discussion and making sure everybody participated. James also prompted questions that required critical thinking and sparked fresh new conversations. Jenny input valid points and insight to many questions. She also provided a sensitive perspective towards many of the cruel actions taking place in this book. Due to being late to the group, I was not informed of the rest of the group’s jobs and what Jenny’s role in the group was. Edith was very prepared for the discussion because she typed out her reading log full of summaries and reflections. She had many valuable points and comments to bring to the discussion. The bulk of the discussion was talking about individual stories that moved every one of us. We even had a disagreement about a specific situation and exchange view points and tried to look at it without bias. Disagreements are good because each person is forced to creatively defend their view point. I would have to say that they our first literature circle went successful and am looking forward to our next meeting.

The literature circles went great and smooth. It seemed as if everyone felt the same about education. We all thought that education gives women power and it can be used as protection from a lot of the abuse. However, I brought up how yes, I believe that education ca help but I feel that in some cases education can sometimes be ignored and not mean anything. For instance, I mentioned how in chapter 9, which was based on a girl who had and education who was being forced to marry her cousin and after refusing to do so was sent to prison. In this case, education meant very little. My point in bringing this up was just to out out how the problem is more complex and difficult to solve. I really do like the literature circles because it helps us each hear what others opinions are about certain topics, and I also feel that everyone did a great job in following their roles.

I have reached my limits with this book. My lack of sympathy has slowly turned into contempt for these people. I wish everyone in the book would just shut up and go away.

Why don't I care? How can I be so cruel? I believe in existential nihilism. Life has no genuine value or meaning. Science shows that only the physical laws contribute to our existence. A single human or even the whole entire human species won't make a difference to the Universe. We are insignificant, and without purpose and not likely to change. Basically, life's only purpose is to live it. Because of this view, I only choose to care about those I have personal contact with.

As for my group, we are the best. Our suffering will make us stronger. Our teamwork will persivere. We will get threw this and trimph, Women Holding the Sky.

Everyone gets my seal of approval. They are a friendly, cheerful bunch. We talked about the book. We tried to follow the job assignments for a while in the disscussion, but it soon degenerated into a more normal unstructured group conversation.

The Congo rapes were the stars of our conversation. This section of the book reminded me of the "Lust" murder portrayed in the movie "Seven" staring Brad Pitt.

I forget what else we talked about. I am guessing something about rape and killing. I notice people seem more interested in the crimes then the solutions. There is a little bit of nihilism in all of us.

I can't even imagine anyone truly enjoys this book except pedophiles, sex tourist, and BDSM fans. I have not yet heard anyone say "I like the part when...." so I think we are safe.

In class today, we formed literature circle groups to help us discuss and get a better understand of the group. Unfortunately, our group only consists of three people; Chelsea, Brittney, and myself. We settled on certain tasks for each person and I chose Discussion director/Literary luminary. Aside from being shorthanded, not all of us were up to the same chapter in the book. Chelsea and I were relatively close to the middle of chapter 9. I tried my best to come up with interesting questions for the both of us to focus on. One topic in particular we chose to discuss was fistulas. There were quite a few personal stories about the topic. One woman suffered from a fistula due to being raped by sticks. Many of the women discussed in the book had fistulas due to unsafe childbirth. These countries lack medical attention, and often time’s women deliver their babies alone, with no midwife. Usually a fistula is a result of the baby being too big, and not having the proper tools and equipment to help it come out easily. We also discussed how there was a place where many women who had fistulas stayed. We found it fortunate that these women could at least accompany each other through these tough times, since family member tend to abandon them for their poor smell. It is saddening to read about experiences like these. I wish that more people, including myself, could help. There are many people who try and contribute a helping hand, but can only make so much of a difference. People need to come together to put an end to this.

My group member Veronica Brittany and Chelsea came together, and we discussed a lot. We were talking bout how those innocent girls are being raped and tortured so bad. It makes me so mad and sad. Nobody wants to live there lives knowing its like that. We were comparing our lives to their lives. From countries like India China etc are being used. There owner just makes money off of them when men just pay to rape them. I cant believe how bad it is in those countries. Also we discussed about how the girls were abused to hurt so bad. I be thinking how people like that are so horrible and heartless.

THe discussion of half the sky was very limited. granted half the group members (me and sabah) are behind in the reading that which limited our inputs of the discussion. but we spoke of different stories and incidents that took place. those who read revealed that their is humor to this upsetting dessertation. that even among theses lives theres still a shed of light down the tunnel. these people continue to live their lives with hope for a better tomorrow. However nothing will ever be done while we are still divided within the issue.
Unity of love is the only way to impact the lives of these women.

Lucia Fallah- Discussion Director
Vick- Vocabulary Enricher
Sideeq- Literary Luminary
Kimtnuy- Connector
Abtisam “Sammie”- Summarizer

In my group Lucia is the discussion director. Her job is to develop a list of questions that our group might want to discuss about the book. Lucia started us off by giving us several questions, and asking everyone’s opinion on them. Vick is our vocabulary enricher. His job is to be on the lookout for a few especially important words in everyday readings. Vick received several of our vocabulary words so he will look up the definition and will give us a better understanding of the word. Kimtnuy is our Connector. Her job is to find connections between the book our group is reading and the outside world. Kimtnuy would connect what women are going through in “Half the Sky”, to what women are going through in the U.S.. Sideeq is our literary luminary. His job is to highlight passages from the text which have gotten our attention for a stylistic reason.
I am the summarizer. My job is to prepare a brief summary of the book. Or in this case individual chapters. As a group we discussed many things. We all have many perspectives on the book and individual chapters. I am very happy to be in this group. This group is excellent to work with we all state our opinions and if we need clarification for anything any member of this group will be very helpful.

Essay about Love

A warmest word
People started to have a love feeling ever since they born. However, the feeling of love has changed by people’s experience changing. Therefore, people came out so many theories about what love is. Such as the theory about the love could be affection for the other, the love could include our enemy and the love could be transmission between the one to the other.
According to the “American Heritage Dictionary”, love is a deep affection and warm feeling for another. Often people found affection when they meet the person who can give them a sexual feeling. This is the reason why people call their sex partner is “lover”. People also find the warm feeling from their parents or friends. This is the reason why people need a strong relationship between family and friend. The love feeling is like the oil in people’s lives and it makes people’s lives become happy.
Although, usually people like to think that love is always a good feeling, some people believe that love could be broader, and they emphasize to love your enemy as if it is necessary. People came with this idea in which love your enemy could give people a highly understanding of themselves. In order to be peace people should learn to love everybody.
However, instead of thinking that love is unidirectional action, some people came up with this idea which is the love could be transmission between the one to the other. The idea is that how much love people can receive depends on how much love people expend. For example, if a person always to help others and other people would want to help this person as well.
In short, love is a most beautiful word in any language. Love is also a big word in any language. It is not so easy to explain love this word as well. Love is a word which people have to use their heart and to feel it, because love is a warmest word in human language.

Basically In class people met in group to discuss the “half the sky” book and they review the book and examine major themes. In my group we talked about Edna, Siama, Seth, and Goretti. Edna was a very powerful woman who became a social entrepreneur by opening up her own hospital. Her hospital mostly serves women because they are oppressed. She got started because her clitoris was cut off unjustly, and she believed that treatment like this need to change. Siama was a woman that was a product of CARE, she was able be get money and become a social entrepreneur because that program gave her loans. With the loan she invested it well and got a lot of money. Goretti was a product of micro finance; she was able to get money through loans too. With that, she started to help out her community.
