Skipped a day (smile). Note the due dates.

Today we finally listened to the Maria Mauldar song: http://www.myspace.com/mariamuldaurtoday/music/songs/stop-runnin-from-your-own-shadow-46300912

Linde transcribed the lyrics for anyone who wants them (smile)

you keep on changing towns
running from place to place
tryna out run the troubles
that you don't wanna face
show me a person who won't look like i might
i show you someone who has failed at everything he tries

stop running from your own shadow baby
dont you know that youll never get away
itll fade in the dark
but it comes back with the break of day

it's just as easy to feel good as is it to feel bad
better to have a little smile
than to run around looking bad
a smile will bring you sunshine
a frown will bring you rain
well it's just like a toothache baby
ain't nothing but pain

oh stop running from your own shadow baby
don't you know that you'll never get away
it'll face in the dark
but it comes back with the break of day

i know what i'm talking about
i use to be a runner too
it's like looking in a mirror
looking right at you

stop running from your own shadow baby
don't you know that you'll never get away
it'll fade in the dark
but it comes back with the break of day

you don't stay nowhere long enough
for even the grass to grow
before you can reap the harvest..
you're back up and on the go

i know what i'm talking about
i use to be a runner too
it's like looking in a mirror
looking right at you

stop running from your own shadow
don't you know that youll never get away
it'll fade in the dark
but it comes back with the break of day

Post your freewrite here (smile).

We completed four (4) MLA worksheets from Hacker on-line. We also talked about primary and secondary sources and I gave students several handouts re: evaluating sources.

We reviewed transitions in They Say, I Say (Chapter 5).

Homework is to bring in a completed Initial Planning Sheet for the Book Report essay. The second task is to read the two handouts on Revision.

Tomorrow we will continue in They Say, I posted a few other exercises, we did not have time to complete. We will do a few more grammar refreshers, watch a Frontline video or a New Hero episode. We can meet in the classroom tomorrow, not A-202E.

Students will have to watch three Frontline World episodes on Social Entrepreneurs by Thursday next week. Visit http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/socialentrepreneurs.html Post your responses to the questions at the link I will provide. Answer the questions in complete sentences. Don't forget to include a heading on all posts.

Yesterday we read the Ode article in depth. The article is online as well. I encouraged students to read the second article which is an interview. Yesterday, students also practiced the 3-part thesis (handout). We then used the Ode article to practice outlining. I encourage students to use the outline form for the book report essay or the social entrepreneur essay.

Monday, July 16, 2012, bring in your abstracts for the book report essay. We might go over to A-202E after our break. I'd like everyone to find a book review, an essay or some scholarly work referencing your book or its themes.

Presentations

The presentations will be Tuesday, July 17. Hopefully, we can finish in one day, both weeks. The SE essay presentations tend to go longer. Plan for 3-5 minutes for both presentations if you are flying solo--10 minutes max. After each presentation there is a self-reflection (written and posted) and each student has to respond to each presenter indicating what worked well (posted and given to the student on their abstract). This is not due the same day, rather by the next day.

If you want me to make copies of the abstract(s), print one for me in advance. Give it to me Monday, July 16 and Monday, July 23.

If the plan is a joint presentation, make sure it is rehearsed.

Look at the day-by-day post for abstract guidelines. I have given samples of abstracts from Owl at Purdue University. Hacker might have something on it. I haven't checked.

Preparation for Book Report & SE essay assignments

Monday, July 16, 2012, also bring in five sources for the SE essay in MLA format. The outline for the SE essay is due Monday, July 23, 2012. Bring in a paper copy if you do not have a computer. Make sure you include a naysayer, foster empathy, that is let us know why we should care, and lastly, include meta-commentary. It goes without question that the paper should be coherent, that is have proper signals like transition and pointing words (They Say) connecting the ideas paragraph by paragraph.

SE Essay due date and presentation

The essay is due for peer review, Wednesday, July 25. We will have presentations July 25-26, 2012.

Course Portfolio
Portfolios are due Friday, July 27, 2012 by midnight. I will host a portfolio workshop the last week of classes, probably Monday, July 23, 2012. It will be an hour right after class in A-202E. If I have time, I will host another workshop perhaps Thursday, July 26, for an hour as well. We will play it by ear.

Freewrite: Running from Your Own Shadow

This song is basically saying that you cannot run away from your past. And if you struggle to hide from it, it'll come back and bite you. I really like it when she says that it'll fade in the dark, but then come back in the day. I think that's very witty of her to use the general knowledge of shadows to say that, the sun will always shine, and that the past will always come back. The singer, Maria, says that it is just as easy to look happy as it is to look sad. And yes, I have to agree that it is easy to pick one or the other. It is very easy to look happy, and it can be just as easy to look sad. But people don't usually question why a person would be happy, they would accept it. When someone is sad, people would question why, then try to pry into the other person's life.

I think overall, her choice of words is very witty. To say that he doesn't stay long enough in a place for the grass to grow, and then go on about how he doesn't stay for the harvest makes me think about wheat, and how it's like grass, and how this hypothetical man would not stay long enough for the harvest season. Then she goes on about how she use to run away from her past, but then she doesn't anymore. She has stopped running, and now, that she sees someone else who has the same problem, it's like looking at a reflection of herself.

Freewrite: Stop Runnin’ from Your Own Shadow

Maria Muldaur’s song, Stop Runnin’ from Your Own Shadow inspired me to write this poem.

Too many problems to solve,
Pressure builds up painfully
Like a needle driven through your bones
Leaving a sharp pulsing sting
Throughout your body
Afraid to see yourself in the mirror
Because all you see is a conflict looking back at you.
Nowhere to run or hide,
As entities creep up behind you,
Stalking you until you lose your sanity.
Comes a point where it is best to confront your dark side
And alleviate the hate.
The weight off your shoulders,
A blessing to no longer feel oppressed.
It feels great to no longer feel like you have been followed
Without having to hide behind dark shadows.

Sometimes you feel like we are in a dark place that you think you cannot get out. Remembering would be going back to that dark room, closing the door behind yourself, and sitting alone waiting for shapes and figures to show themselves through the blackness. You don’t feel like doing anything, but you have been waiting to pass that dark moment and move on. Instead of fighting with your dark side, it’s better to learn from your dark past, and make your future better.

The song we listen today is very true because its saying how we can't run away from our past forever. Although sometimes you can, but it will always reappear one way or another. The past is our shadow because our shadow is always behind us just like how our past is behind us. It will always be with us no matter what. When Maria say “ it's just as easy to feel good as is it to feel bad” she is saying how anything can change your mood even the littlest thing. But its always best to look forward and not look back even if you mess up. The past is unchangeable so live in the moment with no regrets. Just keep trying even if you fail because trying is better than not trying. The shadow can also represent the problems that you have. Running away from your problems (“shadow”) will not solve anything which is why you have to face it sooner or later.

The shadow of a person represents the darkness and cruelty that they have within him. One woman from Half the Sky named Srey Neth was sex trafficked into being a prostitute at a young age. After she was rescued from her brothel, she was able to find a man who loved her dearly. But she married the man without telling him that he was previously a prostitute. There was a part in the song that talks about how even though you may push the pain aside, it would always come back and haunt you. Neth chose not to tell her husband the truth shows that she believed her past wouldn’t matter between them. But still, the more she tries to reject it, the more pain it brings her. It’s true that the past was painful for her but it’s still a part of her and it needs to be accepted. This song helps demonstrate the painful hidden past of Srey Neth.

The song overall uses great analogy that often seem to describe what the “shadow” might be. It got me thinking about how shadows are a really good representation of darkness or hatred. Shadows have no face and usually just depicted as a black figure. No matter where we go, as long as there is light, there would be a shadow with us.

Stop Running from your own Shadow is a song that embodies the many hardships of the girls of Half the Sky. The title itself can be interpreted metaphorically for avoiding the problems people face, but just like a shadow, they will never truly go away unless they are confronted. Many women mentioned in Half the Sky are stuck in a situation they feel incapable of escaping. Many are forced into prostitution or to drop out of a chance to achieve a higher level of education, which is directly attributed to reducing poverty. Most of the women will accept that their situation cannot be resolved, like they are running away from their own shadows. But until they get out of that situation, those problems will follow them like a shadow.

In Maria Muldaur' s song "Stop Running from Your Own Shadow," she tries to encourage people to face the shadow of their past. She tells that even you think you already escape from the painful past, it will keeps existing around you. Then it will becomes the darkest area to hide in your heart and hurt you little by little every day. Maria's words remind us that running away from the shadow is not the way to solve it and it just disappears for a while. In the song, she tells her audiences that no matter how painful your shadows are, and despite it will be hurt when you are trying to face it directly, standing up again is the only way to overcome the past and to have a newly beginning.

In Maria Mauldar's song, stop runnin' from your own shadow, I believe she is saying it's better to face your fears and be happy then to run away and be sad. Avoiding the problem is not going to make it go away, it's only a ruse, and before you know it, your right back where you were. I realy like how she emphasizes the fact that no matter what you do, "...you'll never get away. It'll fade in the dark, but it comes back with the break of day".

Then Mauldar goes on to say she is experienced with this dilemma, and seeing you go through the same problem reminds her of herself. It seems like she is trying to say everything will be alright, she went through the same thing, but then things got better becuase she stopped running. Now that she see's you go through what she went went through, she want things to get better for you too, but you have to "stop runnin from your own shadow".

I feel that the song is telling people not to be afraid of who they are. To basically just be who you are and don't let anyone or their decisions get you down. We can't help who we are so just be yourself. Sometimes people get afraid or discouraged like Leymah Gbowee did and she did want to quit but she hung in there and didn't run from her shadow and she made it through. Don't run from who you are because even if you do try to change yourself you will always come back or conform to who you are.

The singer makes a good argument that individuals should “stop runnin’ from [their] own shadow” and just deal with their situation instead. The singer expresses that the shadow may fade, but it’ll never go away. I agree with her message, because the past or current situation will never disappear, but the best way to deal with it is to just be aware of what you did and know you can’t do anything about it now. Don’t let it hold you down, and just move on.

The song relate to some of the women in Half the Sky, and how they decided to not take the suffering anymore and actually do something about it. A specific example would be the woman who barricades her door; instead of just letting the village bully barge into her house and kill her and her family, she defends her home. The shadow that she is running from in this case is her eventual rape by the village bully. However, she is brave and not only saved lives, but encouraged the other women to be stronger too. Leymah Gbowee from Might Be Our Powers is another example of someone running from their past. The bully is actually everyone’s shadow.

After the Liberian women get peace, her sister passes away suddenly. Leymah then proceeds to run away from her fears by going to school. Although in the book, she says she needs to finish school to confirm a better life for children, but she may also be running away from taking on the responsibility of her children too soon. She has been away from them for so long, she realizes she doesn’t know much about her kids, and regrets it. Gbowee’s shadow is her guilt. After she runs away from this, she also drinks away her problems and emotions, up until she almost dies. She then stops running from her guilt, “because [she’ll] never get away”. When she comes to her senses and moves on, she leads a much more steady and strong life.

Sometimes we want to forget everything and we do not want to face our problems and that is when we get caught running from our shadows. Because I fell like our shadow is what reminds us of what we have done, it is like a reminder that follows us to wherever we go. But it does not matter how fast we run, we will never get away from it. So it is better to just encounter our problems and for once feel like our shadow is not following us to remind us of our problems. This is always the best solution, to face our problems that haunt us like our shadow, for it you will feel better at the end of the day.

My response “Runnin’ form your own shadow” by Michael Fell and Maria Maulder is that it is heartbreaking to see poor children who don’t have homes in other to be running away from there own shadow. Also, that the children in other countries sometimes can’t run away because there might be some difficulties that are happening in their homes such as a war like in Leymah’s book “ Mighty be our powers” in which that Leymah had some events along the way that she thought wouldn’t happen to her. Relating this back to Half the Sky, there are some women in the book that didn’t want to be taken away from their homes. This song relates back to these stories by saying that even they try to run away from their troubles the troubles will come back to them eventually. This song relates to society today because people have problems and conflict with one another everyday whether it be racism or a small problem such as disagreeing with someone

This song made me reflect a lot on my life. It made me think of all the problems in my life that i have had to face even though I sometimes dont want to. Its very hard for a person to face their problems no matter how big or small they are. The song also talks about shadows, I took it as the shadows being a constant remembrance of the problems that are there and how the problems will follow you. So it is only right to face them!

Stop running from your own Shadow

Not facing a problem you have, is how I perceive “running from your own shadow”. The song’s message informs an intellectual life has a good and bad side. At a certain point in life, feelings and crises that come up cannot be avoided nor ignored. Time does not always heal, especially issues one does not chose to deal with. People often give up on themselves and turn to drugs to escape their emotions and problems; they forget what life is and never get to enjoy it.
