They Say Assignment for English 1A 1-2:50 & 4-5:50
Today in both afternoon classes we extended the review from Chapter 4 in They Say to include the essays we have read for this week and last week: Mukheejee (280-83), Baldwin (50-71) and King ((203-20).
Post the responses to the set of templates used here. Make sure you include a works cited page.
I will give students an assignment sheet for THP next week, so you can begin thinking about the essay. Next week students also should begin thinking about what book they plan to read for the next essay. Rubin uses lots of great sources. I will give you the assignments sheets for all three essays next week and post them here.
Homework is to read THP and review chapter 4 in They Say. If you are already where you are supposed to be, read, the next chapter.

Using “They say” templates for James Baldwin
Although Baldwin disagrees with much that his father says, He fully endorses hs father’s final conclusion that “ As for me and my house, we will serve the lord.” Though I concede that James Baldwin is right about racial profiling, I still insist that he, at the end, turned out like his father. I’m of two minds about Baldwin’s claim that he loved his father and tried to communicate with him. On the one hand, I agree that his father’s death made him really upset. On the other hand I’m not sure that if he remained alive Baldwin would have appreciated him as much.
I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good.
I do not know who you are but certainly you are going to a famous blogger if you aren't already ;) Cheers!

Using they say disagreeing templates for two ways to belong in America -Bharati Mukherjee
Being an immigrant is mistaken because Mira overlooks thr fact that America offers a person to be who they want and gives them a sense of freedom with minimal set rules to have to follow.
Bharati claims that "My sister is an expatriate, professionally, generous and creative, socially courteous and gracious and that's as far as her Americanization can go"(282), rests upon the questionable assumption that "she is here to maintain an identity, not transform to it"(282)
Bharati disagrees with Mira view of not converting to Americas culture, because her search within herself has shown that "America spoke to me- I married it- I embraced the demotion from expatriate aristocrat to immigrant nobody..."(282)
Mira can't have it both ways. On the one hand she argued that she loved her job, friends and students but on the other hand she also says " I feel used, i feel manipulated and discarded"(282) because of the new immigration benefits law passed.
By focusing on the new legal immigration benefits laws and her stubbornness to not give American culture a try, Mira overlooks the deeper problem that if your not passionate about where u place your roots you can become resentful and never see the possible opportunities before your eyes.

Using “They say” templates for agreeing with reason "Letters from Birmingham jail" by MLK jr
1) i agree that "their are two types of laws : just an unjust" pg (208)my experiences of being a minority as well confirmed it.
2)MLK is surly right about "sometimes a law is just on its face and unjust in its application." because as MLK may not be aware that gays face the same problem that gays do today. pg(209)
3)MLK theory of "nonviolent campaigns" is extremely useful because it sheds light on a difficult problem of violence during protest. pg (205)
4)Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interested to know that it basically boils down to the word "legal" MLK makes a valid point in saying "we should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was legal" pg (210)

Two Ways To Belong In America by Bharati Mukherjee Pages 280-283 in 50 Essays.
Mukherjee is right that you should interact in the country that you live in, but she seems on more dubious ground when she claims that she gave up her cultural background.
