Social Entreprenuers

On "Frontline: World," I saw a program about a micro-lending organization called KIVA where lenders who want to help small businesses in Uganda. Now KIVA is all over the world. All loans have been paid back 100 percent. Visit http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/uganda601/video_index.html to see the video.

Here is a link from this site to other entrepreneurs. Choose one's that interest you: http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/socialentrepreneurs.html

The organization is in San Francisco. There is a link to other Frontline programs about Social Entrepreneurs. Watch this program and over the week, watch two others. Respond to the following questions: What is a social entrepreneur? What problem did the person profiled identify? What is the name of the organization they started? Describe their relationship to the community they serve. Why did they decide to address this issue? What is the local component? How does the community own the process?

You need to define "social," "entrepreneur," and "philanthropy." This should be a part of your introduction. A philanthropist gives money to worthy causes. A entrepreneur is a business person. A social entrepreneur is a business person whose business creates social good and economic development in a community where poverty was a barrier to its financial growth. I will give you a handout to begin your research process tomorrow. If you want to stop by my office the handouts will be in a folder in the bin by Tuesday, October 30.

Visit 3 websites this week -- Monday-Wednesday, October 29-31, and respond to the questions listed above for each social entrepreneur. Post here.

For your research project, I want you to find someone, if possible, who uses his or her art for social change. This Thursday, November 1, poet, activist, Amiri Baraka is at UC Berkeley at a reading. Friday, November 2, he is at EastSide Arts Cultural Center. He would be a great topic for your research. He doesn't live here, so this
is an opportunity to talk to him about art, activism and social change.

A social entrepreneur is someone who starts his or her own business that gives a community of poverty an ability to grow financially. Grace Aaya, a peanut butter salesmen in Uganda, made it clear that those living in Uganda live in a poor state of poverty, where civil war has occurred in. Acholle farmers work for less than one dollar a day. However, the microcredit company Kiva helps loan money to on the rise companies in the area. The loaners usually build a close relationship and fondness for the entrepreneurs, because of their courage and willingness to commit to their small businesses. Loaners feel empowered and great to give back to these people living under the harsh conditions and lifestyle of Africa. Also, those at Kiva state that banks give too high of an interest rate to these small companies in third-world countries. The microcredit transaction being online makes it easy and fast to transfer money. The local component is the donations from people from San Francisco, who help Kiva able to loan money to the businesses. The community owns the process by their own initiative and ability to sell something worthwhile to people in Uganda. This close community is able to make a living thanks to the people at Kiva.

Trevor Fields was a successful business man in the Marketing industry that took on the challenge of providing clean water in the Sub Sahara Affrica. This social entrepreneur was able to invest his time and money to create an innovated pumping system in the town of Stinkwater.

The water system in the town was archaic. In order for people to obtain clean water they had to use a manual pump that took hours and much manpower to receive small quantities of water. Many people still relied on water from wells that were contaminated, which caused illness especially in children.

The Pump that he created consisted of a merry go rounds similar to the one that you would see in local playgrounds. The merry go round is connected to a pipe that is connected to a deep well underground. When the merry go round is swirled around it pumps up to 400 gallons of water in an hour. The water is connected to a shaft that travels to a pump that people are able to receive clean pure water.

By strategically placing the merry go rounds at schools he gave children play structures to that they never had. His innovation brought fun for the children as well as a purpose for everyone, water.

His innovation caught the attention of the US government and the rapper Jay Z. The US government donated 16.4 million dollars and Jay Z sponsored a concert vowing to donate at least 400 thousand dollars to the cause. Trevor’s goal is to have over 4000 merry go rounds placed in the Sub Saharan by 2010. With the help of others and his persistence he will reach his goal and possibly exceed it.

Dr Edgar Rhodas was the Prime minister of Health for Ecuador that became frustrated with the countries health care system. The Bureaucracy of the government made it difficult to reach the indigenous people in the rural areas and slums to receive health care. Dr Rhodas took it upon himself to start his own medical outreach clinic. This social entrepreneur with the help of other doctors and the donations from Europe and private donors is making a change in medical care for Ecuadorian people.

Dr Rhodas assigns teams of doctores to treat groups of families in rural geographical areas. They are reaching these people by car, plane, walking and horseback. They have been able to reach people that have never had medical care before. The treatment of TB, Heart disease and diabetes are saving peoples life. Dr Rhodas has set up ways to perform surgery in a large truck, which cuts down on the cost of hospital care for people that can’t afford it. He has also been able to obtain a large boat to set up a floating clinic, which treats people living in the river areas of Ecuador.

Dr Rhodas has made a change in his county by performing 5000 operations and servicing over 50,000 poor people with medical care. His hopes are to expand his clinic. His son who is a doctor in the US visits Ecuador three times a year and performs medical service with this dad. He has vowed to keep his fathers clinics alive when he is no longer able to do so

I watched the video on the Cinta Larga Indian Tribe in Brazil. The tribe lives on land that spans several acres. This land has been designated for them (a reservation), where they have their own laws that govern the land. However in the late 1990 they discovered that the land sits on one of the largest diamond mines in the country. The government now wants to determine if the mine should be governed by them. Basically what they are saying is the land that the Indians live on does not cover what is under ground. They have had many counties that have come in and starting mining illegally, which ultimately is causing several diamonds to be sold on the black market. The Indians means of support is mining; However, due to the illegal mining there was a massacre of over 100 people that the tribesmens have been accused of doing. The mine has been closed down until the government can determine a peaceful and legal way of dealing with the situation. I don’t think that this video really falls under the category of a social entrepreneur. The journalist did bring this story to light for people that weren’t aware of the situation. I believe that the diamond mind belongs to the Indians. The government always seems to want to get involved where the shouldnt especiallty when there are large sums of money involved for profit.
