Today in class we continued with our presentations for Hip Hop Culture. The students who presented were three: Elesha Martin and Sal. Elesha's presentation was on natural hair and braids; Sal's shared a song by an Afro-Peruvian rap artist, "Immortal Technique."

Post a response to the presentations this week, either today or yesterday. Homework is to complete the reading in Can't Stop up to Chapter 4. Post an analysis here, not here literally, but at the link, for Loop 1. Bring in music next week that reflects the culture per Chang.

Future Assignments
Next week we'll start Loop 2. We'll also look at misogyny and women in hip hop, the early stages to now. I will give you an interview between Dyson and Byron Hurt to read. Perhaps we'll have a debate?

Our topic for the group research project is women in hip hop. Each group will profile a female MC, rap artist or woman who is using hip hop culture as her economic, social, political and spiritual voice.

What is she saying? Do you agree? Has the message changed over time as the artist matured or circumstances shifted for the better or worse in her life or in the world?

Response to Presentation:

TO EVERYONE IN THE CLASS I WANT TO APLOGIZE, I WAS WRONG THE ARTIST WASN'T "NAS" IT WAS "IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE.... AH AH AH "THAT'S WHAT I GET FOR THINKING I'M ALWAYS RIGHT", AS MATTHEW WOULD SAY.

My response is to Elesha Martin let me get it write, I thought your presentation was well put together and I agree that braids are apart of the hip-hop culture. Especially in the movies, I always see whites or Asians sporting braid when the protray a hip-hop character.

Today was interesting hearing the Music that Sal played i really enjoyed it i mean it was so deep and i visualized every sceen. That was really Hip Hop it touched bases on many important things. Elesha's was good as well because now Hair has become a big part of hip hop like when they see a new artist with the style they end up tring it for instant the Cheri Dennis Cut very popular. Enjoyed it.

Todays presentations were very well presented. I'm glad that Elesha came with the Hair presentation that was different. I do hair myself and some of the prices that you are charging are way too cheap for the time and effort and creativity that we have to come up with as hairstylists. Especially when it comes to another race. Braids have gone way back to the Bo Derek days. That is probably too old for some of you guys but yes she is a white lady that used to get her hair braided in singles.

Of course yesterdays presentations were good too I like how Ashley brought in the Hip-Hop time line that was a good things to incorporate in what we are reading on in Can't Stop Won't Stop.

I really like the creativity in everyones presentation and I feel that that is how we all can learn from one another.

THE SONG THAT SAL BROUGHT IN WAS VERY INTERESTING AND THE IMAGINATION THE ARTIST HAD AND HOW IT RELATES TO ANOTHER ANICIENT STORY, BUT HE PUT IT INTO A RAPPER'S PERPESECTIVE AND HOW STUFF LIKE THAT REALLY HAPPENS IN THE WORLD TODAY.

I thought that the presentations went well, I enjoyed the ones that went more into depth with some of the social and politcal aspects of hip-hop. For those who had to do their research, I thought u did a good job in delivering the message. Keep up the good work!

My response is for Sal, Immortal technique is an interesting rapper. The way he connected the story in the idea of the Oedepis complex had me on edge the entire time. How one can get so far passed gone is true reallity in this world today. I wonder what made you want to bring in that specific peace. You don't have to respond but yea, it was a bit disturbing.

I am responding to Sals presentation of Immortal Technique(Devil's Dance?)
It was my first time hearing this song and i thought it was a very interesting song. The song was about drugs, fights, etc. I thought it was nice hearing a song from the East Coast and hearing similarities with those artists in the West are singing about.

I thought the presentation was something very new and different. For those whom it disturbed I think they just weren't ready for that much of the raw and uncut truth in your peice; because it definately is REAL LIFE! The artist you profiled is a very dope lyricist and his art is very political. I think you should continue profiling the same artist because you seem to know a lot about his music and it might end up being a nice hommage to him to keep profiling him. I had heard one of Immortal Tecnique's songs before but not the one you played. Keep 'em coming! Hola at a scholar!
