There is a lot happening this week for Hip Hop fans and scholars, from Chuck D to KRS-ONE, MCLyte and Mutabaruka, and of course Jeff Chang. I hope you get to something, and don't forget the extension of the run for "Angry Black White Boy" at Intersection for the Arts. Make your reservations on-line at theintersection.org sooner than later.

We read up to chapter 3 in The Coldest Winter. I forgot to put a link up for comments re: this last reading. Winter has escaped to the ghetto and the ghetto is now in Long island via the weekend parties her mom throws.

How long do you think she'll be able to deceive her dad re: her innocence? Do you think her escapades will catch up with her? What will be the cost she'll pay?

Again list slang terms and their definitions, and summarize the sections we've read. List the characters we've encountered so far and their relationship to Winter. What do you think about these characters. Do you think the author depicts them realistically?

Are their any other metaphors at work here? What are they? Remember, Sister Souljah is in town at Marcus Books Dec. 6.

Continue reading this weekend as you work on your social entrepreneur papers.

Winter asked Santiaga if she can go to Brooklyn to get her hair done but
Santiaga refused to let her go. Winter, the rebellious young girl she is had to make a plan to go to Brooklyn without permission anyways. She called up Sterling to use him as a ride to get to Brooklyn. She met up with Natalie and went to a club to hang out with her friends. She saw her lover Midnight and tried hard to get his attention but he ended up taking her home back to Santiaga. I do not think Winter will be able to deceive her dad. I don't think she ever did, Santiaga is a smart man and he knows when she lies but maybe is letting her learn from her mistakes. From all the lying and deceiving, Winter would probably have to pay the cost very soon.
I think these characters will appear in the story over and over again maybe when something goes wrong and Winter needs some help she would call Sterling. Aunt Laurie is family so therefore she would always be there for Winter and the family.
Sterling-"sugar daddy"
Tasia-who is supposedly messing with Midnight
Aunt Laurie

Seemingly, it is only a matter of time until Winter’s cunning charm catches up with her. Her dangerous antics of sneaking around town, and relenting attempts to sleep with her fathers employee, “Midnight”, is bound to either get her father caught up (in a violent situation) or get her knocked up (pregnant) at a young age.

"More like a museum, there was enough space in this joint to fit seven or so families." (13)

"I figured if I asked them a question they'd want me to pay for the answer (14)

"They ate like pigs, drank the liquor from our bar, and powered their noses with the cane available in candy dishes usually reserved for jelly beans" (15)

jump off - something that is about to commence (good/bad); getting started; preparing to take action.

hook up - to fix something or decorate (hair, home, etc.)

dough - money
