Tupac speaks about the New Black Panther Party, this film, Bastards of the Party looks at the legacy or remains of the BPP, the youth --in this instance, in Los Angeles who knew something great or revolutionary happened, yet lack the guidance or leadership to know how to continue the principles of revolution. The director of the film is curious about the culture of violence in his community, the black community. What social situations gave rise to the two most notorious gangs, the Crips and the Bloods. Clps & Story: http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/bastardsoftheparty/index.html

Raised in the Athens Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Cle "Bone" Sloan was four years old when his father died, and 12 when he became a member of the Bloods. Now an inactive member of the notorious gang, Sloan looks back at the history of black gangs in his city and makes a powerful call for change in modern gang culture with his insightful documentary, BASTARDS OF THE PARTY.

After flushing out themes, develop 6-8 sentences: 2 analogies, 2 definitions, 2 consequences, and 2 testimonies, then write an introductory paragraph (10-sentences) about the theme per: Bastards of the Party.

We identified themes: violence, police brutality, the BPP for SD, United Slaves or US, black migration from the south, poverty, Civil Right Movement. There are others.

We will continue the film Monday, Nov. 2. If you were absent you can borrow the film from the public library or film rental store.

Other homework is to continue in SPHE: Parallel Structure, which we also reviewed briefly. For the afternoon class, students were asked to find a poem in Rose which uses parallel structure.

Evolution of a Revolutionary books
The COA college book store is ordering copies of the book, only 10, so if you need a copy you can purchase a copy there on Thursday next week.

Today we are meeting at the Lake Merritt BART Station at 5:30 to go to the film "Precious." Don't worry if you didn't RSVP with me, just come and I can get you in.

Call me if you can't find us at the BART Station. The film starts at 7 PM and we need to be there before or by 6:30 PM

Police brutality
Analogy: The police force is a gang with authority.
Definition: Corrupted system.
Consequence: Police become afraid of the people they serve.

Violence
Analogy: Violence is a hug that hurts.
Definition: Hurt caused by one person to another.
Consequence: Trust is lost between people.

The movie Bastards of the Party discusses gang violence towards one another and how it all began. No one really knows how it all began but one theory relates back to president Hoover. He believed that the panthers were more dangerous than the communist party, so he devised a plan to plot the US organization and the Black Panthers against each other. The reason that the Panthers became so dominant in black society was because the police would brutalize people for no reason other than the fact that they were black. The Panthers gave the black society hope and helped by providing food and education. Hoover disliked this and hoped his plan would cause them to get rid of one another. To help further his plans along cops would publish cartoons with suggestive ideas towards each organization about the other. This would eventually lead to the violence between gangs and the black community.

Emmy, great responses. Note my comments.

The definition needs to be a complete sentence also, along with the consequence. For example, Violence is pain visited on one person to another; it can be physical, psychological or emotional.

When there is violence, trust is lost. (Consequence).

Police Brutality

Often across the nation one sees police brutality as evidence of a corrupt justice system.

Emmy, you have to mention the topic in each sentence, so:

Police brutality leads to distrust and fear on both sides: victim and perpetrator.

By the end of hios journey, he agrees with his friend Moster that says “Gang banging is a death style, not a lifestyle,” Lil Monster.

Bastards of the Party begins to explore the history of African-American gangs in Los Angeles all the way back to the black migration from the south in order to escape In the 1970s the movement and the people began to change. There was a larger push towards individuality and freedom and less of a push towards self sacrifice.
