Today in class we completed exercises in SPHE on paraphrasing--literal paraphrasing. We didn't get to the homework, however, tomorrow we will review it: literal and free paraphrases.

In SPHE students are to complete pp. 339-380 by Monday, February 1.

Note: we have a library orientation Wednesday, Feb.17, 8 AM and 9 AM. We will meet at the reference desk. Put the date in your phone and planner.

Homework recap:
Bring in the article you have been working with this week along with the two literal paraphrases and the two free paraphrases of the same two passages. You will post this on the blog Thursday, January 28. Provide a link to your article for students to see the original text in its entirety.

It can look like this:

1. Orginal passage from article

A Literal paraphrase 1
B Literal paraphrase 2
C Free paraphrase

2. Original passage from article 2

A Literal paraphrase 1
B Literal paraphrase 2
C Free paraphrase

We will discuss the difference between a summary and a paraphrase tomorrow and practice summarizing. Homework will be to summarize the complete article. I will walk around and confer with students over how many words or paragraphs.

Come to class on time and purchase your textbooks. I am making copies only up through next week, after that you are on your own.

I am working on the syllabus now and will post it by tomorrow. Half the Sky is only $11 on Amazon, so if you have a credit card, try to get it on-line and use the next day shipping option. We will use the book beginning Monday, February 1.

Sorry professor Wanda I don't seem to understand the full extent of the homework. I have two separate passages with one literal paraphrase for each. And i plan to do one free paraphrase for each also.

I checked amazon and the price has went up to $14. It changes prices often. It still beats buying it from the book store. For students purchasing it, make sure to look at the rating from the seller(if your are buying it used) and read the comments on the condition of the book.

Literal Paraphrase and Free Paraphrase

Passage 1 - Literal Paraphrase

One false step last summer was all it took for Debi Thorkelson and twist her knee so badly she couldn't even bend her leg. After an MRI revealed that she'd ripped a major ligament, the physician said that she has to have a surgery. "I am uninsured, and the treatment was more than $41,000, not comprising the hospital stay, states Thorkelson.

Then her husband recalled a show he'd watched about Americans having medical treatment in Panama, at very low prices. He found a travel agency that paired patients with doctors overseas. The agency endorsed a U.S. trained doctor practicing at the Clinica Biblica Hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica. The over-all expenses? Just below $4,000 for surgery, plane tickets and 9 days in a newly opened rehab center.

Thorkelson is one of half a million Americans who went abroad last year to places like Brazil, Costa Rica, Singapore, Thailand and India for procedures like hip and knee replacement, heart and gynecological surgery, even cancer and experimental procedures such as stem-cell therapy states Josef Woodman, writer of Patients Beyond Borders, the first detailed guide to medical travel. A lot of experts have confidence that outsourcing health care is the new trend; while some believe that risks comes with it - long distance travel, unknown doctors, little recourse if things go wrong - make it an unwise and sometimes risky alternative. "Medical tourism is intensely free from harm if patients do their research and understand what they're getting into before they go." states Woodman.

Reflection about paraphrasing

Free Paraphrasing is writing in a whole different structure and phrases.
Literal paraphrasing is when you change phrases with synonyms and keep the same sentence structure. Literal paraphrasing is like plagiarism and that’s something that shouldn’t be done, because it copying other people work. But at the same time its easier to find ideas. But free paraphrase is having to come up with your own ideas, it’s the right way to write sentences.
