Today in class we reviewed the exercises in SPHE in the early class, read the essay and identified the errors. Students are to work on the templates over the weekend. Essay 2 is due by March 2. Bring a copy in stapled.

Presentations begin tomorrow morning. We will continue Monday. Essays can be posted this week as well. Students have until Monday, March 1, to get them in. Respond to student presentations by March 2.

In Half the Sky read up to chapter 11 page 185. We will spend Wednesday in Literature Circles. You can always read more. We will complete the book by Monday, March 8. Start thinking about essay topics. One student looked at the issue of human rights, and how the problems exposed in the book stem from societies' denial of women and girls' human rights.

Bring a copy of your book into class Wednesday, March 10 to share.

Essay 1
If you have to revise Essay 1: Sentence Punctuation, you have 1 week to get it in. "Pass" is the grade you want. If you have questions, ask before revising to avoid unnecessary time. Include a brief summary of what changed between drafts and attach the first graded draft to the revision.

Today in the second class we read selections from Alehouse and also from the Felicia Pride book, "The Message." Post your freewrites from Pride at the Love link below where you post the freewrite response to "I Need Love." Don't forget the works cited page.

Essay about Love

A warmest word
People started to have a love feeling ever since they born. However, the feeling of love has changed by people’s experience changing. Therefore, people came out so many theories about what love is. Such as the theory about the love could be affection for the other, the love could include our enemy and the love could be transmission between the one to the other.
According to the “American Heritage Dictionary”, love is a deep affection and warm feeling for another. Often people found affection when they meet the person who can give them a sexual feeling. This is the reason why people call their sex partner is “lover”. People also find the warm feeling from their parents or friends. This is the reason why people need a strong relationship between family and friend. The love feeling is like the oil in people’s lives and it makes people’s lives become happy.
Although, usually people like to think that love is always a good feeling, some people believe that love could be broader, and they emphasize to love your enemy as if it is necessary. People came with this idea in which love your enemy could give people a highly understanding of themselves. In order to be peace people should learn to love everybody.
However, instead of thinking that love is unidirectional action, some people came up with this idea which is the love could be transmission between the one to the other. The idea is that how much love people can receive depends on how much love people expend. For example, if a person always to help others and other people would want to help this person as well.
In short, love is a most beautiful word in any language. Love is also a big word in any language. It is not so easy to explain love this word as well. Love is a word which people have to use their heart and to feel it, because love is a warmest word in human language.

First off i apologize for coming to class late today, and im happy you gave me a chance to do the freewrite assignment on here. Ok, so i think Felicia Pride's "The Message" is an interesting compilation of music, literature, and her personal insights. I think this book is a great way to catch the attention of people in my generation, and it gives a connection between music and the message each song tries to portray. At first i skimmed through the photocopied pages, but eventually i read through all of the different songs Pride mentioned. "I Need Love" by LL Cool J not only was the assigned read, but Pride's commentary grabbed my attention. It wasnt so much the fact that i like LL Cool J's music, but the explanation that came after. The way she tied together the need for a male's tough bravado and the inner, more sensitive side he'll often hide struck a nerve. Often times my boyfriend will try to hide his true feelings for me, but eventually they spill out and i can see how much love and relationships really affect him. I also agree with the statement Pride made about what we are "willing to do in the name of 'love'". She says we may be lonely or unhappy, and can compromise our true selves to hold on to what we think is love. The bottom line is love is a very complex emotion, but everyone needs it.

The poem I wrote about from Alehouse is Divorce just with a few words it expresses a lot. It had a lot of meaning. When the poem says “once: two spoons in bed, now tined forks across a granite table and the knives they have hire.” That means at first a couple are happily married then tension goes on and it leads to bad problems like having a divorce.

Hello Ms. Sabir,

I read a passage from Felicia Pride’s book “The Message”. It spoke about GhosfFace Killah song, “All that I got is you,” where he exposes how his childhood was. When thinking of what I would do when my first big check came, I would probably do some of the things that were mentioned. Felicia stated that most artists and athletes go out and immediately buy expensive cars, a big mansion, and expensive jewelry. The feeling of first taking care of the person who raised you is the best. I feel that this should be your first option when the opportunity becomes available.

The poem I read is on page 51To Survive as a Siamese twin .It is about two twin sisters and their life .Life as a twin joint sister is not easy. Some time things do not come out to be the way they wanted it to be. There is not much freedom. Where ever they go people are staring at them.

"Divorce"

The poem on "Divorce" by Billy Collins Talks about how they used to be like two spoons lying close in bed and fitting into one another. Then he goes on to say how now they are spiked and dont fit anymore. Then mentions something about hiring knives, which in my interpretation means the lawyers the couple has hired to settle thier divorce.
When i had first read this poem it did not make a bit of sense to me. But then i had the person sitting next to me help me breakdown the poem into pieces to help me figure out what each meant.
I am not sure if my interpretation is correct, but that is the sense that i made out of it.

I choose this poem because of it’s simplicity. Anyone could write like this. To prove it I wrote a 2nd and 3rd verse to make this poem a 1000x cooler.

Imaculate conception

coming from himself
to be himself
he took a piece of himself
and breathed himself
into himself

coughed up himself
apon himself
discussed with himself
he killed himself
now there is no self

now without himself
by missed himself
he resurrected himself
now he is himself
but not himself

Free Write Ale House: Boy With a Lost Shoe

I chose this particular poem to write about because, reading through it I seen that it was mainly about the summer time. Summer is one season that I really love, when other seasons come around all i continue to say is that I wish it was summer. All the descriptions made brought me back to a happy thought, and then the phrase of the boy losing his shoe came about. I feel like they had so much fun during the summer day that there was no way to recognize that his shoe was missing.

The poem or passage I chose to reflect on today was Proposition by Bianca Spriggs. I found this passage quite an interesting take on the skyline of the world. How the world is dominated by giant phallus like buildings representing a male dominated world. What if the world’s buildings were more like giant vaginas? Deep warm holes inside the earth, with only shrubs on the exterior. Would the world be any different? The landscape would definitely look different. I found this writing very erotic and appealing with a no holds barred take on this proposition. However I was a little puzzled by the end of the writing when she said “Perhaps we are nearer to god here on earth-imagine how close we might become if we sought Her G-spot instead of her face.” Is this a hint at seeking deep love with god instead of just a superficial showing of love? What ever it means I liked this passage and found it quite surprising and interesting.

On running into an ex lover

This poem is about seeing an ex boyfriend or girlfriend and reminiscing about past memories. Kathleen Latham writes about feelings of hatred, fake smiles, and happiness. I chose this poem because it reminds me of myself. She writes, “…But I am deterred by circumstance and this morning’s regrettable choice of sweatpants.” It reminds me of myself because seeing someone from the past, you want to look better and I’ve seen an ex before and inside my head I’m thinking ‘why did I wear this today?’ It also shows that she still cares about the person, probably not in a romantic way, it matters to her what they think.

My favorite line is towards the end. She says, “I laugh, too loudly, drunk with the potency of things unsaid – lips that once touched forced to spew platitudes. Your eyes skitter to the horizon, forgetting me. Goodbye, I think, smiling. “ I think seeing her ex made her happy because she’s moved on and is happier without the person in her life. It made her reflect on the past

I choose Photograph, 1900 by Julianna McCarthy. This poem describes an old picture on of 1900’s. It describes how the picture is in black in white well in the poem it says it is gray I am guessing because it is in age and over the years started to get gray. The poem also describes that her clothing is black which I think back in those days there was not much color selection or people just didn’t wear bright colors like people today. It shows also that the woman is proud or she just loves her son a lot that she wants him to home out high in the picture. It says she holds him high up and wants him to really stand out in the picture. It’s an interesting poem how the writer describes the picture of that time being a piece of value which to me personally it is a piece of value because it’s a picture of a family. I love taking picture and putting together photo albums and I feel that this person took out one of her oldest family pictures to show her application of her family.

To me this poem is an expression of love. The writer is parazlysed by their affection for someone who does not necessarily recognize her feelings. She writes of the symbols of her love and of heavens looted. It would seem as though she is so captivated that her feelings have hardened. She only hopes that when her dreams are smashed that she will still leave a mark in her lover’s universe. A mark that cannot be forgotten or erased, but that stays as a stain forever. It is her hope that she will be remembered.

I chose the poem named; "As time always does" The poem revolves around the word "time." Time passes so quickly and while it does, things change all the time. Everything is so different from what it was many, many years ago. What people do is just to observe how things are being changed as time goes by. We take a passive role in this world without realizing that the world is changing for the worse. One day we will ask ourselves, what have we been doing all these past years??? One day we'll be in another place and we'll notice how selfish (including myself)we have been, not only with the human race in itself but also with the world. Sometimes it is our fault and sometimes it is society's fault.

Looking around every details with description and seems she has spent so much time for waiting and waiting. Image the return of the soldier but at the same time image the bad news arrives. It is a sad feeling with heavy worry poem. I looked up the writer of this poem on web; Pujos is one of the youngARTS Finalists last year. It is so impress for young generation write poem with their heart to show the love. I admire them.

In class I shared my poem and talked about how it reminds me of my hometown. Many women are fake like barbie dolls, getting plastic surgery and having fake personalities. The husbands are distant and don't really connect with their wives, but they stay together anyway. It makes me feel sad for the world if that is how people are. A lot of people are just very fake and pretend to like everyone and get along when they really talk badly behind everyone's back.

Felicia Pride's "The Message"
In "The Message," an analysis by Felicia Pride of hip hop, she breaks down the song " All that I Got Is You" by Ghostface Killah. The rapper is known to be callous and thuggish. Felicia says she has a soft spot for Ghostface after this song, because he shows the softer side and admits his love for his mother. the song describes how mothers are there for you no matter what and that we would have nothing without our mothers' love. In today's hip hop culture, the content majority is about money and promiscuous actions. So when there is a song that glorifies as opposed to degrade the women in our life, it touches the heart. Pride realizes the depth in the song and chooses this song to represent love. In the song, Ghostface realizes that his mother was instrumental to his success and he felt he had to pay tribute to an influential part in his life through the medium of music.

I agree with LL Cool J. It is true that some people are ashamed of showing love. I used to be one of those people. I used to feel embarrassed when I am seen with my mom. I was also embarrassed to admit that I love my mom and care for her. I am not embarrassed by my mom anymore. i realized that I don't care if other people see me with my mom. All I care is what my family thinks of me and my actions.

Response to “At the Inn”
I think that this is a really nice romantic poem. It is so cute how this couple has little dates in a Inn so that they can spark up their love life. It’s funny how instead of getting ready in the room, she goes to the bathroom so she can get ready and it be a surprise. The husband is just waiting to see what is going to happen after with the clothing. the little flirting that is done when she gets up to say that she is going to go get a sweater because she is cold. She knows while she is doing this, he is watching he. He actually follows her and forgets about wanting dessert. Now they are going to have a romantic night. I think that this is so good to do for people that have been in relationships for a long time, I would like to do this when I get older and have my husband. It is good to keep a relationship interesting and to do just things spontaneously. I think that this is the way marriages and relationships last for a long time. This is a great idea.

The poem "Pinocchio" by Ted Gilley really caught my attention with its imagery. The poem portrays the creation of Pinocchio in a very intimate way by putting the reader in the puppet's mind. But upon further analysis it becomes clear that the poem is much deeper than its seemingly playfulness. I believe Pinocchio is a metaphor and the poet is in fact referring to himself as a man. However, I found it difficult to be sure what the poem is trying to say. The poem's focus on creation gave me two very different ideas. The first idea was that the writer is comparing the creation of Pinocchio to how he felt he was created, with imperfections and with dreams. Looked at in this way, the poem seems to be existential and there are a few points in the poem which suggests this. Another interpretation I thought of was the idea that society and the world shapes who we are. The last part of the poem really seems to portray this idea by conveying the imagery of being made on a trestle table, the world, strew with the shaving of a dream. I found this poem to be very interesting and thought-provoking. We are indeed like puppets, shaped by external influences constantly into what we are now and will become in the future.

The poem is funny and romantic. To me its exciting for the husband that there is a little fun and adventure and at the same time a tease and chase instead of just getting to the point. Things like this is what keeps relationships strong and going because as I women I would want to keep my parther happy on every level and I expect the same! The wife kept the husband happy while at dinner and in the room but he went along with the game of cat and mouse.

I read the piece by Felicia pride on “I need love”. This song was done by LL cool j or also called Lady loves cool James, this was a very different song for the artist. LL cool j was a gangster rapper when he first appeared on the rap scene; he embodied aggression, power, and anger. Thus, his street creditability was really high. But as he started to make a transition to making more romantic and love songs, he street creditability lessen. This was because there is a popular notion that gangster are suppose to never fall in love. Love is considered a sign of weakness, generally anything that have to do with women are considered weak. LL cool James responded to this claimed as saying why it is weak to love. Love is one of the hardest things to do, to love, a person has to completely open up their heart and soul and let someone in. That takes more strength than to shoot someone. I believe and agree with LL Cool J comments; basically there is more to life than money, power, and respect.

Only the century is new.
As that is the child
belongs to her.
All that is her
belongs to a yesterday
framed in gray.
She wears mourning,
black serge, high collared;
the boy her only adornment.
She hold him high,
head even with her own,
inviting comparison.
See, see her eyes command,
this first year, this second child.
