Library Orientation
Our library orientation is Sept. 22, 11 AM in the library. We will meet there.

Homework

Additional homework for Monday, August 30, is to bring in two published articles (on-line news sources are fine): one on Hurricane Katrina suvivors five years later or the state of the Gulf region five years after Katrina. The second article is to be about Michael Jackson. His birthday and the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina are both Sunday, August 29. We will practice parapharasing and summarizing the articles next week.

For extra credit, students who want to can bring in lyrics to a Michael Jackson song to share the thesis and summarize it. If students want to bring in music as well, we can play a few songs. If anyone wants to bring cookies, I don't mind (smile).

Class meetings, Office Hours

On Thursdays, we will meet in A-232. I will be in the classroom from 8-12. 12-1 will be an office hour there, so please come by or stay. On Wednesdays, I am in A-232 from 3-4 PM.

Hurricane Katrina 5 Years Later

After Hurricane Katrina, the surrounding area of the Gulf of Mexico had been effected tremendously. Hundreds of people had their lives changed forever in horrific ways, making their recovery difficult. The Thomas family may have lost everything, included the place they used to call "home", but moving to Arizona was in fact for the better. The Thomas family was lucky enough to have come across the Whiting family, who had offered them a home rent-free for Katrina suriviors. Hearing about the prices for repairs of their home in Lousiana, they decided to stay in Arizona. Even though the Thomas family still have memories of the their lives back in New Orleans, they know that talking about it is not something they want to remember, seeing how its too painful to know and remember of all the things they lost.

Michael Jackson's Birthday

People across the world have celebrated the deceased pop singer's 52nd birthday. The biggest birthday bash was said to be in Gary, Indiana, the hometown of the King of Pop. In honor of his birthday, the Mayor of Gary (Mr. Rudy Clay) paid his tribute by mentioning all the memories he had of Michael were still close to heart and that he should be honored as "the world's greatest entertainer."

Hurrican Katrina Survivors in Memphis Reflect on 5th Anniversary

Due to Hurricane Katrina, many churches opened in hope of becoming a relief center to those who were victimized, offering praise, worship, and encouragement for the evacuees. A couple who barely escaped the storm had escaped to a side road and thanks God for their safety throughout. The couple and other survivors of the hurricane were mentioned for offering and felt blessed in having people offer their money in helping the families. It has been five years since and there were both mixed feelings about the incident – while Walker, the survivor of Hurricane Katrina, felt grateful to be alive, he was concerned for the most part about the other victims who struggled.

Michael Jackson - Thousands Gather to Celebrate Jackson's Birthday

Fans reminisced on the King of Pop as they held several events in honor and celebration of Michael Jackson’s 52nd birthday which was on August 29th, 2010. Many gathered in his childhood town which is located in Gary, Indiana as a special This Is It party. Also, Spike Lee, whom directed two of Michael Jackson’s videos in 1996, hosted a tribute at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Lastly, a special Michael Jackson Day was held at The Autry Center in Los Angeles as fans had the chance to learn hit dance moves.

5 Years Later: Katrina Survivors Build New Lives in Sacramento

The article compares two experiences of two New Orleans women who ended up relocating to Sacramento. Lastasha Falkins took matters into her own hands by hijacking an abandoned milk truck, transporting her family to safety in Lafayette's Cajun Dome. Keyon Williams and her family were at the mercy of the weather until rescue boats brought them to Houston's Astrodome. Both women are making the best of their new lives and opportunities in California, while acknowledging the continuing struggles they and all Katrina survivors face.

Michael Jackson Tops Global Download Sales List

On the weekend of his would-be 52nd birthday, new figures show that Michael Jackson is the world's most downloaded artist. His music represents 25% of all Indian downloads on Nokia's Ovi, a significant music service in India. Top tracks, in inverse order, are "Thriller", "Billie Jean" and "Beat It".

And for extra credit, I had a little bit of fun with India's most popular Michael Jackson song. I paraphrased by the phrase, rather than by the word, and incorporated humorously verbose phrases with vernacular.

"Beat It"
Thesis statement:
A man's life is more important than his masculinity, but frequently men choose to preserve the latter, even if it endangers the former.

they instructed him not to come back
never show your hide around here again
their glare is fierce and their remarks are difficult to misinterpret
so leave.

it’s in your best interest to flee, take action in any way your faculties allow, you shouldn’t wish to fight, don’t attend to prove your masculinity
but you’d rather be rugged, take action in any way your faculties allow,
so leave, but you’d rather be dangerous and cool

so, leave. leave.
nobody wants to lose
stuntin' your skill and style of combat
it’s completely amoral
leave

they’re after you, you should vacate at the first opportunity
however, you want to prove you’re not a youth
to preserve yourself, take action in any way your faculties allow
so leave, just leave

you need to prove you have no fear
the game has mortal stakes; it ain’t jacks
they’ll assail you
and say it’s justified
leave, but you’d rather be dangerous and cool

so, leave. leave.
nobody wants to lose
but you’re stuntin' your skill and style of combat
it’s completely amoral
so leave!

Hurricane Katrina: Five Years Later
Five years ago, Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans and parts of Mississippi and Alabama. The hurricane was so destructive that some people today are still having a hard time to move on with their lives. In fact, about 40% of the areas affected by the hurricane is still in need of repair. After five years of non stop persevering yet still needing help shows how bad the results of the hurricane were. The government already spent so much money trying to fix the affected places. In many ways the victims of such tragedy represent the American Dream in terms of conserving the face of devastating incident.

Hurricane Katrina
Since 64 percent of public schools in the 2004-2005 school year were not making the grade, after the catalyst of Hurricane Katrina, there was a desire to raise the standards of public education. As a result the Louisiana State Legislature increased the number of charter schools from three to 51. Now 61 percent of the cities public school students attend charter schools.

Micheal Jackson
Micheal Jackson went through a lot of plastic surgeries, on his face. In fact the author of this cite depicts him as a person who was always dissatisfied with the way he looked. Every couple of years his face changed due to plastic surgery, for example his nose kept on shrinking and getting pointier. Despite his facial changes, he participated in charities that helped children in poverty throughout the world.

Hurrine Katrina 5years later
After Hurrine Katrina I come think that our government system is not the best government in the world. When I saw the news on television I had heart broken. First of all my auntie live in New Orleans over past ten years. And all suddenly we stared receiving phone calls. She was telling us how they lost everything including they beloved home, close friends and neighbor. My auntie was fortuned enough to move to California to live with us and her two kids.
Every time she talks about their home in Louisiana it brings tears in her eyes but living in California change their lives forever. Now she had great job and she’s making better living for herself and her two kids.
Even thought we had to help her to get back up facially, emotionally. But the memories she had while living back in New Orleans left her in cold world, confusing of unknown.
I remember vividly the pain, struggle she had through during. Five years later she’s living better life and her kids also she puts those painful moments in her past. This is great example of what don’t kill you only can make you strong human being.

Michael Jackson

Hurricane Katrina 5 years later Summary

Five years ago the State of New Orleans was devastated; thousands of lives lost and almost the entire state cover with water. Over 125 billion in damages, today the reconstruction of New Orleans has improved drastically. Hurricane Katrina has scared the heart of all New Orleans citizens. President Barack Obama visited New Orleans to pay tribute to its reconstruction, an effort that continues today. Hurricane Katrina projected to root out the flooding of an entire city, leaving the United States government to consider Katrina as one of the most horrific natural disaster Americans has faced. For weeks after the storm, the world saw heartbreaking images of people stranded without food or shelter, and a federal response that roundly criticized the Bush administration.

President Obama show his appreciation to the surviving victims of Katrina.
"It was a natural disaster, but also a man-made catastrophe - shameful breakdown in government that left countless men and women and children abandoned and alone," Obama said. Five years before this date, many were concern whether the state would become of what it was. Today New Orleans is counted as the most rapid growing cities in the United States.

Hurricane Katrina summary

Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina has been one the most devastating natural disasters
to hit USA ever costing a total of 125 billion dollars, and leaving
almost 1000 dead. We need to look at ways of preventing such a
disaster. As this is the only problem, we can predict and perceive how
dangerous a hurricane can be but preventing one is a different matter
entirely.

The U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) reported on August 23 that
Tropical Depression Twelve had formed over the south-eastern Bahamas
this was soon to be named hurricane Katrina, it was upgraded to a
hurricane on the 25th of august, it hit land the same day lousing its
strength while travailing over Florida. Although on the 26th of August
it grew it to a category 2 hurricane. It became clear the storm was
headed for Mississippi and Louisiana. The next day the hurricane grew
to category 3 and again the day after, the storm grew in intensity and
on August the 28th it became category 5 with winds up 214mph.
