Today's presentations with students: Stephen, Mike, James, Hoan, Jovita and Sulekha were awesome! Absolutely amazing! Okay, it's spring and I think I've got the spirit (smile). I wanted to let students know that you get bonus points for the presentation that help with the essay grade. If you do well on the presentation, then I will take this into account in the essay itself. I will not let you slide re: MLA, but I will let the presentation boost grades. If you have a B-, you will get a B, a C- will translate as a C, an A- into an A.

Get all the outstanding essays into me by Wednesday. I will not read any essays for the first time in the final portfolio which will contain all your work. Monday, we will finish the presentations: Jamie, Kenneth, Kennedy, DeJanae, Courtney and one other person (smile).

Make sure your abstracts are posted along with the answers to the questions. Post responses to the presenters in the same place you posted last week. Presenters, do not forget your self reflections.

Mention the presenter and their book in each comment. You can group comments by book authors or themes, if you like.

Response to Stephen The Treasure Keeper by Shana Abe:
A fantasy romance story about a girl who belongs to the lowest clan, Zoe Lane, who searches for her fiancé but then creates a connection with a powerful lord clan and becomes a political couple and how she sets out to The story is intriguing based on the setting, which is during the 17th century and the fact that they are hunted by human beings shows conflict. Stephen also mentions Zoe’s childhood love Rhy, and he is able to present information that Zoe is Drakonian with powers to turn invisible, see ghosts, and hear voices of dead people. He compares the book to Twilight and he did a great job, I especially like the fact that he did not like the way women were treated badly.

Response to Mike Bonesetter;s Daughter by Amy Tam
This book deals with interpersonal issues of being Chinese-American and Mike describes the character of Ruth who lives in San Francisco. The character is worried about her mom mental state and has developed dementia and spouts information that she was not aware of in her mother’s life in China. Mike’s presentation gives just enough to intrigue for the group, nice presentation.

Response to James Lucky by Alice Sebold:
A memoir of Alice Sebold, she reveals how her life was transformed when, as an eighteen year old college freshman, she was raped and beaten in a park near campus. He spoke about the difficulty she had while struggling with the policeman’s statement about how lucky she was, though she felt dead inside and unlucky. He noted that she wrote to release and give awareness to others. Very nicely presented Colleen Low

Response to Hoan The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tam:
Hoan’s thesis is a challenging subject because he is using all four daughters experiences of growing up in this country as Chinese Americans and the conflicts that arise within their mother’s traditional values and the daughter’s experiences, to which they struggles through two cultures. Very nice presentation Hoan.

Response to Seulekha Memoirs of an Arabian Princess by Emily Ruete
Sulekha’s book is about the memoirs of Salma from Zanzibar (Tanzania), and the time period is during the 15th century. She wrote about her life in the palace, when she was living in Germany after her parents died. She was a Muslin, who converted to Christianity and had children. Seulekha taked about Selma’s contrasts in her life such as education, versus European education and that the latter was unpractical. As most memoirs, she wrote it for herself and information for her mostly for her children. Excellent presentation.

Response to Jovita Virginia Wolf
The multiple deaths in her life brought the character into a realm of problems, to which turned her life in the wrong direction. She entered the realm of society that spoke not from ones souls, but regurgitated symbols of superficiality. The character’s life was chaotic, perhaps she need to feel the bond of her mother who died at an untimely death. Interesting book and Jovita said a lot about and gave loads of information from the book.

Response to Kenneth A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown: Colleen Low
A memoir of the author Cupcake Brown, is filled with descriptions of teenage prostitution and drug addiction. Rape, poverty, and a multitude of struggles for this character, one after another is hard to decipher how at such a young age a child could go through such misery. How she was sent to foster homes and raped and the lack of support, to which Kenneth brings to reality of Cupcake. The stories describe the undertones of caution by the author’s circumstances and depicts the truth that one can change their life as Cupcake Brown’s did with resilience. Nice presentation with a happy ending.

Response to Courtney: White Lines by Tracy Brown
Edna Brown pushed her daughter into physical abuse with the mother’s boyfriend. Jada the daughter goes from crack addict and prostitution to group homes and her sister was placed into a mental hospital. Courtney did a wonderful job of describing Jada’s life of such sorrowful struggles and how the character finds strength to become a survivor.
