We listened to Ruthie Foster sing "I Don't Want to Know," from her Let It Burn CD (2011) on Blue Corn Music Inc. Students wrote a three part essay: thesis, antithesis and synthesis. We start with the pro-argument.

Don't Want to Know

I don't want to know 'bout evil, I only want to know about love
I don't want to know 'bout evil, I only want to know about love
Sometimes it gets so hard to listen
Hard for me to use my eyes
And all around the gold is glistening
Making sure it keeps me down to size

I'm waiting for the plains to tumble
Waiting for the towns to fall
I'm waiting for the cities to crumble
Waiting till the sea ?...?
Yes, it's getting hard to listen
Hard for us to use our eyes
'Cause all around the gold is glistening
Making sure it keeps us hypnotized

From the writer's website

I don't want to know about evil,
Only want to know about love;
I don't want to know about evil,
Only want to know about love.

Sometimes it gets so hard to listen,
Hard for me to use my eyes.
And all around the gold is glistening,
Making sure it keeps me down to size.

And I don't want to know about evil,
Only want to know about love;
I don't want to know one thing about evil,
Only want to know about love.

I'm waiting for the planes to tumble,
Waiting for the towns to fall.
I'm waiting for the cities to crumble,
Waiting till the sea a grow.

Yes it's getting hard to listen,
Hard for us to use our eyes.
'Cause all around that gold is glistening,
Making sure it keeps us hypnotized.

And I don't want to know about evil,
I only want to know about love;
I don't want to know about evil,
Only want to know about love.

I don't want to know anything about evil,
Only want to know about love;
I don't want to know about evil,
Only want to know about love.

However, being optimistic may not be the best solution. You do not want to live your life asleep, and not experience the evil referred in “Don’t want to Know.” Without the experience, you can do unfathomable things when you are in love and inexperienced with the evils that come with it. It makes you blind and ignorant to the world around you “'Cause all around that gold is glistening, making sure it keeps us hypnotized”(Martyn). Knowing about evil is not necessarily a bad idea. It often prepares you for what is coming next and if you know about evil, it will be easier to avoid it.

Love is a wonderful thing that everybody wants to experience and know about. In other words, loves is something unavoidable, when we love somebody, we only want to know about the good side of the person, but we should not be blinded by our love and ignore the evil side. Evil can be attractive, shiny and breathe taking, but not knowing about it has its consequences. Even though the consequences are obvious, we tend to ignore them, and wait for the moment to happen. In the song, the writer knows the consequences of evil, but he chooses to focus only on love. On the other hand, he knows that he will end up with un-healable scars from evil. Love comes with evil, and we cannot just choose one. If you want love, you have to face the consequences of evil.

Good Vs. Evil

The people of the world would be much happier if they only knew about the good, which is "To be desired or approved of". As Ruthie Foster's interpretation of John Martyn's poem portrays, "The gold is glistening, making sure to keep us hypnotized". In other words keeping the human race unaware of the negativity around us. This is beneficial because people get to maintain a positive outlook on life. If people knew about the unfortunate circumstances, then maybe they would be discouraged from pursuing their dreams coldheartedly. Thus it is beneficial for people to only know about the good things so they can maintain an optimistic lifestyle.

Love Is A Journey

True love is the ultimate feeling anyone can have for either something or someone. People who find love tend to have longer, healthier lives. Of course like many things in life there’s always some potential down sides to what can make you stronger, this also applies to love. “I don’t want to know bout evil, I only want to know about love”. Love has no guaranteed path to happiness, you have to work on it and earn ones trust in order to have real love for one another. Love itself can make a person blind and make a person reject the hard truth. “it keeps us hypnotized”. Nevertheless love is something worth fighting for. Love makes us feel human, some would even argue it goes beyond that. Nevertheless no one should shy away from this journey. Who knows, meaby you will find what you seek. You have to at least give it a try and not live in fear of rejection.

Freewrite: Ruthie Foster's "Don't Want To Know"

Love is tricky, because as much as we do not want to see the bad parts of a persons entity, we blind ourselves with the thought of the possability of this person being the one. Love, being a natural feeling we as humans can experience many times, can sometimes lead to unwanted realizations. One such realization is evil. When we are growing up, we think of love as being a magical and something that will protect our relationships from evil deeds. In reality, we get a huge slap in the face, and this makes us realize that sometimes, evil is apart of this love. As told by Ruthie Foster, "Yes it's getting hard to listen,
Hard for us to use our eyes.
'Cause all around that gold is glistening, Making sure it keeps us hypnotized." Even though we now know love can sometimes bring unwanted evil, we do not let it stop us from loving again, and nor should we ever let it stry us from this path. Love is such an awarding pleasure, to forsake it because of the possibility and likliness of evil, would be to forsake a part of our souls.
