Cyber-Assignments and Freewrite

1. Post your freewrite response to the query re: a Happiness Soundtrack. Make a list of songs, albums . . . you'd include in the score.

2. They Say (14:1 and 14:2). The topic for exercise one is "happiness." Make sure you include the names of all the student writers. If you get to exercise two, post it here as well. If you do not get to it as a group, complete for homework individually and post here before class Wednesday.

We started class with Happiness Lit Circles, then shifted in They Say.

3. 50 Essays (Peer Review instead). We did not get to the peer review, so students exchanged email addresses. Send your essay to a classmate. Classmates need to get the essay back to the student by Wednesday before class. Students have until Thursday, Feb. 14, to write a reflection on the peer review, what was shared, and share with me, your plan for revision of the essay.

Peer Reviewers: use Hacker to shape your responses (38).

The Word document includes:

Revised Essay
(don't forget the works cited and/or the bibliography)
Initial Planning Sheet

Narrative on Peer Review and Revision

In the subject line of the email, include your name (If it is not obvious from the email), the class and time and the assignment.

4. Homework: In thinking about Gloria Anzaldua, how does she in her essay introduce what "they say" and standard views into her essay (23)?

Cite those places here. Does she use the templates indicated in the textbook? If not, what are the clues?

Review pages 24-27 and discuss which points of view Anzaldua addresses in her well-crafted essay. We will do this again on Wednesday using Nancy Mairs's essay and perhaps Kingston or Vowell.

We will complete 40:1 in class.

Homework for the 1-2:50 and 4-5:50 classes on Feb. 13, 2013, will be to summarize a reading for this week from 50 Essays and post at the link I provide (smile).

Don't forget there is the Happiness Depot available for students to drop in and share insights. Make sure you do so at least once a week.

The term happiness tends to be looked at very simply but to Gretchen Rubin happiness is much more complex. She see’s happiness as something particular and something you have to work for everyday to achieve. However others feel that being able to pay their bills on time or to be able to live in a stable environment is happiness. On the contrary many of these people who work backbreaking jobs just to be stable hasn’t actually obtained happiness. For the truth Rubin explains something called fog happiness, which are activities or events that occur that seems to make you happy or giving you this happiness feeling when truthfully examined it doesn’t bring any happiness at all. In this project Rubin explains her step-to-step process of achieving inner happiness and gives you her opinion on how every step she takes is getting herself closer to happiness.

They Say I Say Exercise 1

1. The term “Happiness” tends to be synonymous with “joy” in many different minds. Gretchen Rubin see’s happiness as something that everyone wants to achieve. However, everyone has their own way of being happy. On the contrary, many of these supposedly happy people are actually independent thinkers, concerned citizens, and compassionate human beings. For the truth is that there are many very good reasons for being happy. Perhaps the best reason is to have a better life style. In this Book, closely examining Happiness, Gretchen does little things in her everyday life to become a happier person.

Exercise 1:
The term “happiness” tends to be synonymous with “love and joy” in many people’s minds. Gretchen Rubin sees happiness as a goal people pursuit and try to achieve in their daily lives for an abstract goal of “un-satisfaction.” However, Gretchen Rubin chose to write and start a happiness project in order to live a happier life. On the contrary, she doesn’t feel the satisfaction that most people settle for themselves. For the truth is that sometimes it can be good to try and obtain a little more happiness just as Gretchen Rubin. Perhaps the best reasons are to enjoy life more, be more social, or to enhance one’s happiness. In this book, then, closely examining Gretchen Rubin’s happiness compared to a normal satisfied person is clearly a better option to shoot higher and be happier.

The term “Happiness” tends to be synonymous with the term “optimism” in many people’s minds. She sees being happy as doing what she likes or what makes her feel better about herself. She sees the “happiness project” as a project to fulfill her happiness to the fullest, to figure out what makes her truly happy in life. However, other might assume she is depressed and not happy with her life. On the contrary, she is happy with her current condition yet she realizes that she could/should be more satisfied with life. For the truth is there are many good reasons to seek happiness. Perhaps the best reasons are to improve her mental and physical health, her relationship with her husband and maintain a better overall equilibrium. In this book, she closely examines the pursuit of happiness; how far should one go, how much change does one need to be satisfied/happier, how long should the on going process should be, which in her case was a year long project.

The term happiness can be daunting to some. They see happiness as something that can be obtained, purchased or gained through social status. However, experts have proven that on the contrary such pursiut’s of materialistic things can actually be counterproductive to achieving happiness. For the truth “happy people generally more forgiving, helpful, and charitable have better self-control, and are more tolerant of frustration than unhappy people, while unhappy people are more often withdrawn, defensive, antagonistic and self-absorbed.

The term “happiness” is synonymous with being naïve in many people’s minds. They see happiness as a façade that people present to pretend that the negatives in life don’t exist. However, Gretchen Ruben doesn’t believe she’s showing a fake version of herself. On the contrary, she’s trying to find true happiness in the positives in her life that should be appreciated. For the truth is that there are many things to be happy for: family, good health, personal growth, relationships, friendship, and career success. In this book, finding what brings her happiness and focusing on that instead of what brings her stress and sadness will help Ruben appreciate the positives in her life.

There are a lot of different types of music that I listen to for different occasions, but if I’m feeling down and need a specific vibe to perk me back up I usually turn on either John Mayer, or Jack Johnson. My favorite Jack Johnson song is “Banana Pancakes”.
I love Bruno Mars when he writes soulful ballads – I’m not really into his pop music.
Also, although I’m not a fan of Britney Spears, I grew up listening to her original music and hearing it makes me happy to think about birthday parties when I was a kid.
I think Adam Levine’s voice is so unique, I always sing along to Maroon 5 songs.
Pink’s albums make me happy because they’re so strong and opinionated.
“On the Floor” by Jennifer Lopez is a road trip song I used to sing with my best friend; that’s why hearing it makes me happy.
My mom used to always make my sister and I sing “Mambo No. 5”, for some reason, on the way to school.
1) “Banana Pancakes” – John Mayer
2) “When I Was Your Man” – Bruno Mars
3) “Hit Me Baby One More Time” – Britney Spears
4) “Daylight” – Maroon 5
5) “Stupid Girls” – Pink
6) “On The Floor” – Jennifer Lopez
7) “Mambo No. 5” – Lou Bega

The music I would most enjoy listening to in my happiness project is composed and conducted by Jack Johnson. He is a modern guitarist who has created a sound that is defined by his life experiences and his affinitive love for life. Such songs as “Gone”, banana pancakes and bubble toes are a perfect example of his daily observations of humanity and how silly we are. The sounds and lyrics are an interesting combination that invokes large mood swings. Often I will start playing his music when I want to invoke happiness in my own mind. I reflect on a time in my life when I first learned of the musician and the sounds of his music. It was a happy time when i was allowed a brief moment to break painful realities that life had.

Well here goes....

In the Happiness Project, Rubin dedicates a whole year to help herself by increasing happiness in her life. She works on many aspects of her life that will bring her happiness. She sees happiness as anything that will bring you joy and happiness, so she dedicates 12 resolutions, one for each month to work on increasing her happiness. However, many people have their own views on what brings them happiness in their life and these views may or may not be the same views as Rubin's. On the contrary, Rubin writes that to be yourself. She states that “I need to acknowledge to myself what I enjoyed, not what I wished I enjoyed” (116). What brings you happiness, may not bring another person happiness. For the truth is that Rubin helps the reader identify what brings him or her happiness and to create resolutions to help them reach happiness. In this book, Rubin creates resolutions that will help her be happier and serves as a guide to help the reader create his or her own resolution to reach their own happiness.

What is happiness? According to Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, Rubin views happiness as a combination of “. . .feeling good, feeling bad, and feeling right, in an atmosphere of growth." (67). In order to achieve happiness in her life, she first constructs a plan comprised of a set of resolutions for each month of the year and by completing those resolutions, she hopes to attain her goal of happiness. To help her get through the struggles that she may encounter while completing her resolutions, Gretchen devises the twelve commandments that act as a guide to help her attain her goals. Along with her list of commandments, Gretchen also creates a secondary list that includes important life lessons that reinforce her twelve commandments.

Exercise 2, page 14, "They Say, I Say"

In the introduction to "They say, I Say": The moves that Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkstein provide templates designed to assist the fledgling writer in getting past the intimidation factor and allow them to spend time focusing more on the subject itself. Specifically, Graff and Birkstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer provide "the key rhetorical moves that comprise" critical thinking. Although some people believe that this type of leading the thought process can be counter productive to creativity, Graff and Birkstein insist that "students need to see these moves represented in the explicit way these templates provide. In sum, then, their view is that these templates value to the creative process far outweigh any deficit they may create in the writers ability to analyze and formulate coherent thought. I would agree that it's important for each writer to start their experience with proven techniques. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend provide an invaluable format for getting started. For instance, I would not have been able to formulate this work itself in such a manner without first having and example. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that this sort of cookie cutter writing will lead to prefabricated, stale and un-original work. Yet I would argue that, without this form of starting help many great writers would not have gotten past the first page. After all, writing is just as much an art as a science and requires the unique touch of the brush by the individual to make it beautiful. Overall, then, I believe that continue to develop people capable of writing great works we must first get them to start writing and that is exactly what the authors have done.

People think happiness tends to be synonymous with having a "good" life. They see happiness as having a direct correlation with things like money, friends, and social standing. However happiness is a state of mind independent of these things. On the contrary material things can promote happiness but happiness must come first. The truth is that searching for happiness outside of material things can lead to a more fulfilling realization of the blessings you've been given. In Rubins Book, the happiness project, closely examining this process can help you begin your own journey to finding happiness.

In modern society, people often overlook the value of happiness. They view it as a pointless variable. However,Rubin contradicts this notion by providing many datas that happiness can change anyone's life: "just stepping outside clarifies thinking and boosts energy". Most people would internally believe that money bring happiness. On the contrary, money foster greed and cause loneliness; Rubin tells how having relationship is where happiness is at. For the truth, money does bring a safety net in this capitalist society. As we follow Rubin trough out the story, her collective happiness brings meaning to her life. In this book, Rubin defines what brings happiness to her life and can in turn, help others.

Some may say The Beatles are the most influential band of the 20th century. Which, I would agree upon if I were to be asked. Their music sends positive message of love, peace, and friendship; notions of the 1960s era. "A little help with my friend", "In my life" are two of my favorite songs from the Beatles that had changed how I feel whenever I'm not happy. Their songs provide inspiration and comfort when things aren't going too well. And lastly, "Imagine" by John Lennon is a masterpiece because melody is so soft and comforting. And the message that it tells tides into the theme of happiness:love for each other.

Without transitional phrase and format, a writer wouldn't be able to flow as nicely; thus, a bad written paper. As noted by the authors, even all the top creative writers and even avant-garde artist needed to start from learning the basic in order to progress and form their own strategies. The term happiness to Gretchen Rubin tends to be synonymous with various definitions from one person to another. They see happiness as a "positive affect, subjective well being and hedonic tone " (6). However, others define happiness as opposite of happiness. On contrary, "according to current research in determination of a persons level of happiness, genetics account for about 50 percent, life circumstances, suach as age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, income, health, occupation and religious affiliation account for about 10 to 20 percent, and the remainder is a product of how a person thinks and acts" (5-6). For the truth is that everyone has their definition of their own happiness. In this book, then, the different definitions of happiness are explored.

The music in my collections are diverse. The music that I blast in my car would be mostly Hip Hop, Rap, R&b, Soul, Pop, and Alternative. The music that I listen too, either evoke a pump me up kind of emotion, or make me sad, angry or relaxes me. All through my adult life, I never heard music that'll make me happy. I guess happy music to me would be songs for little kids, and songs that are played on some cartoons. These music to me are funny, they make me laugh, especially when I see little kids dancing to them. But If I was involved in a movie production and was in charge for picking the music for this Happy Movie, the music would be:
1. Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
2. I'd Die Without You
3. Love
4. Tender Love
5. Night And Day
6. Back To Life
7. Summertime
8. Can't Touch This
9. I like the way
10. Candy Rain

The term happiness tends to be associated with material wealth in many peoples mind. They see happiness as something that can only be obtained by people with enough fortune to buy it. However, happiness is a lifestyle choice that can't be bought. On the contrary, the majority of happy people's happiness has little to do with the objects around them. Truthfully emotional and social welfare have more influence on happiness than monetary accumulation. In this essay we will explore happiness and discover that happiness is a lifestyle choice and has little to do with your financial state.

If I were to make a score for my happiness project it would be filled with emotional music. Music that takes you through the ups and downs of making yourself happier case like Gretchen said "Happiness doesn't always make us happy"(paraphrasing a bit). It would cover topics of change health friendship love sex drugs and partying along with some socially conscious topics like poverty, violence, and values. Not because thouse are hot topics but because those relate to some of my happiness goals and secrets of adulthood. And finally the score would have artists that exemplify some of the qualities or characteristics that my project is guiding me toward. This would take alot of thought but off the head i would say in random order:
1. Change is Gone Come by Sam Cooke
2.Mans World by James Brown
3. Running Away by Bob Marley
4. Babe Im Gonna Leave You by Led Zepplin
5.Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin
6.Black Bird by The Beatles
7.Little Child Running Wild by Curtis Mayfeild
8.Wicked Games by The Weekend
9.Wont be Long by J Cole
10.The Entire Prince of Egypt Soundtrack
Just to name a few but most likely i would switch it up every month adding more songs like Gretchen adds virtues every month.

My happiness project would play the sound track of the Buena Vista Social Club as the introduction to my project. I would add in soundtracts from the following artist throughout my project: Santana, Priscilla Ahn, My Morning Jacket, Lady Antebellum, Jesus Culture, Hem, Florence + The Machine, Dave Matthews Band, The Civil Wars, Bon Iver, and maybe The Black Keys just to name a few. I believe that this type of music would play well for my happiness project which might not be viewed as happy at first, but the over-all view of my project would show the joy from fleeting moments of happiness.

In the introduction to “The Happiness Project”: Gretchen Rubin states that keeping your resolutions can change your life. Specifically, Rubin notes that when you identify what brings you happiness, your resolutions are easier to identify. In sum, her view is to make a commitment to yourself to change what you want to accomplish.
I agree. In my opinion on what Rubin writes about is true. For instance, if I want to change my behavior regarding not reacting to something, I need to change my perspective. In addition, I would have to remember that others will not change just because I am changing. Yet I would argue that people are more likely to reflect the behavior that is being presented to them. If you are angry, they will be angry, if you are happy, they will be happy. Overall, then, I believe that identifying what brings me happiness can be made into resolutions of changing my life.

The term "Happiness" tends to be synonymous with "joyful" in many people's minds. People view happiness as a medication to ones brain and body eliminating all negative emotions and thoughts. Although, happiness isn't viewed through everyone, one can always find other ways to be happy. Nonetheless, many people find it hard to be happy due to life experiences, adversity, society, ect. In all honesty, there are many reasons why one can be happy, such as having great family and friends that surround them. In this project, examining happiness goes to show that one can truly be happy if they set that goal and achieve it.

In the introduction to "The Happiness Project" written by Gretchin Rubin provides templates designed to encourage people to practice being happy. Specifically, Rubin argues the types of happiness one can do, which is to make a list of goals. As the author her self put it, "MY TWELVE COMMANDMENTS". Although some people think Rubin is crazy, but she insisted that she wanted to be happier. In sum, then, their view is that having great energy at all times leaves the person in a positive mood, which definitely boost his/her happiness.

I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the author recommends are great for people's everyday lives. For instance, exercising daily. In addition, Rubin recommends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, if you don't have access to a gym. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that exercising can be tiring and prevent people from having energy afterwards. Overall, then, I believe exercising can boost one's happiness because in my opinion, "If you look good, you feel good"---an important point to make given that Rubin recommends in her happiness project.

Exercise 1:
The term “happiness” tends to be synonymous with “joy and laughter” in many people’s minds. Gretchen Rubin sees happiness as self-fulfillment in one’s life. She believes everyone can make themselves happier if they just try. However a lot of people choose to find happiness threw materialistic items. On the contrary, some people are happier with just a little more sleep and a little exercise. People tend to be brainwashed into thinking that a new car or a lot of money will bring you happiness. Perhaps being a happy person improves another person’s mood and happiness. In this essay, then closely examining self-happiness compared to a materialistic “happy” person shows that no one could actually be fully happy without them making themselves happy.

In the introduction to "They Say/ I Say": the moves that matter in academic writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to help the writers who want to succeed their academic thinking and writing skills. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer provide the students the ideas how to organize some kinds of critical thinking in their college levels. Although some people believe that templates "can take away from originality and creativity and make them all sound the same". Graff and Birkenstein insist that templates represent “the stock in trade of sophisticated thinking and writing”. In sum, then their view is that templates can help the writers to improve their academic writing become more original and creative.
I agree that the idea of author writing this book as he said:” it is the importance not only of expressing your ideas, but of presenting those ideas as a response to some other person or group”(3). In my views, the types of templates that the authors recommend are able to help my writing skills. For instance, I will use the template like “Many Americans assume that…. ” to my argument essay as beginning. In addition, I will also write my responding paper as “ my own view is that ….” Some might object, of course, on the grounds they might take away the original idea of writing. Yet I would argue that taking the templates if it can move away the initial thinking. Overall, then , I belive this book, "they say/ I say"-an important point to make given make the success and improvement for writers’ critical writing and thinking.

The term “happiness” is synonymous with having “good emotion” in many people’s minds. They see happiness as standards that affect you success or not, such as education, career, family and class. However, Gretchen Rubin believes that happiness can be more if she makes it change. On the contrary, she tries to create a new and true happiness project by making twelve month “happiness” resolutions. For the truth is that Rubin learns that the happiness project can change her life for many ways such as healthy body, marital satisfaction, successful pare hood, and serious leisure. In this book, Rubin shows how she takes charge and control over her own happiness by focusing on the process monthly to find happiness.

They Say/ I Say Exercise 2:

In the introduction to "They say, I Say": The moves that Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkstein provide templates designed to help you maneuver through your writing more successfully and to help you not only write on a whole new level but think on a whole new level also. Specifically, Graff and Birkstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer will help a student become a critical thinker and connect better with their writing. As the authors themselves put it, “Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this book in its presentation of many such templates, designed to help you successfully enter not only the world of academic thinking and writing, but also the wider worlds of civic discourse and work.” In sum, then, their view is that these templates will provide and guide you through the process of engaging your thoughts and writing.
I would agree that these templates provide a great tool in having a higher academic thought and helps guide you into becoming a better writer. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommended would guide me and would assist me when I am stuck in my thoughts. In addition, these templates will be a great practicing tool as I write my future essays. As the authors said, “In our view, however, the templates in this book, far from being “third-grade-level stuff,” represent the stock in trade of sophisticated thinking and writing, and they often require a great deal of practice and instruction to use successfully.” Some might object, of course, on the grounds that these tools may not be helpful and who needs them when you can think on your own and have your own beliefs. Yet I would argue that these tools are beneficial for your growth as a critical thinker and a writer. Overall, then, I believe that this book is a useful tool and can really transform you as a better thinker and writer.

In the introduction to “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to assist you and make different writing styles easier to comprehend. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer are argumentative. As the authors themselves put it “Broadly speaking, academic writing is argumentative writing”. Although some people believe your typical five paragraph essay stating something that is not argumentative is safer, Graff and Birkenstein insist that argumentative writing style is better and more alive. In sum, then, their view is that these templates will help you and guide you into different styles of writing. I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend are exciting and controversial. For instance, the “they say, I say” format is helpful in expressing your own ideas and the ideas of others. Some might object of course on the grounds that writing argumentative is risky. Yet I argue that stating your own opinion and the opinion of others creates more interesting and intriguing writing. Overall I believe this book is a fantastic tool to have and to be able to use all the templates will make writing much easier and I will gain useful knowledge.

I don't know if this is the right place for my post. Professor Wanda Sabir told the class to use the template in They say/I say (page 14) to write my own paragraph. Here it is:

The "meat-eater" is a phrase commonly used by vegetarians. They see carnivores as monsters that eat anything without a heart. However, we tend to live a healthy life as long as we don't sit on the couch all day and indulge ourselves. On the contrary, have a well-balanced diet that includes exercises as daily life practice. We tend to live longer. For the truth is vegetarians do not get enough protein as we do. There is some special type of meat that people eat to get the necessary protein such as fish and lamb. In this essay, then, we learn that we are a part of the food chain and deserved to be placed at the top.

Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they help bring their ideas in writing. As the authors themselves put it, "into practice". In my view, the types of templates that the author recommend are helpful and creative way to express how you feel. For instance, the templates can build your confidence in your writing. In addition, can also be a creative start to writing. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that it can lead to plagiarism and takes the creativity away from writing. There are many songs I would include in the soundtrack. I could choose from the Beatles and pick songs like "Good Day Sunshine", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "I'm Only Sleeping","Hello Goodbye" and many others. Crazy Otto by CCR is a song that gets me pretty energetic. That solo.."I'm Sticking to You" is one of my favorite Velvet Underground songs. There's too many artists to name let alone songs; Ramones, Strokes, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens.. Too many

Also here's the group assignment I did in class with Mayla (I believe that's how it's spelled)

The term "meat eater" is a phrase commonly used by vegetarians. They see us carnivores as some sort o monster who like to eat anything with a heartbeat, just to get a kick out of it. However, we who eat mat tend to live healthier lives as long as we don't sit on the couch all day and engorge ourselves On the contrary, having a well balanced die that includes meat and combines exercise daily, we "meat eaters" tend to be stronger and healthier. For the truth is, vegetarians don't gets much protein as we o. Even for those who only eat a specific group of meat like fish or lamb, they still get the necessary protein that they need. In this essay, then, we learned that we are not just monsters, we are apart of the food chain and deserve to be on top.

They Say/ I Say 14-2

They Say I Say is a book by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, whose primary purpose is to provide its readers with the basic skills of becoming a better writer. They do this by providing templates that we can use in a way to engage in a conversation with the text. The authors themselves say that,
…it invites you to become a certain type of person: a critical, intellectual thinker who, instead of sitting passively on the sidelines, can participate in the debates and conversations… (pg.13)
They help you to think at a deeper level and eventually develop the skills to change not only your writing but your way of communicating with people.
Although some people may believe that these templates limit your ability to critically think due to the outline being there for you in advance. There are many that have benefited from reading this book. In the book it states, “… we have been inspired by the many instructors and students who have praised our work, challenged it, and taken our ideas in new and unexpected directions” (pg. xiii).
I agree that this book can help us become better writers along with better critical thinkers. We can use their templates and change them in a new way of thinking for ourselves. Overall this will develop our skills on engaging in a conversation over the text.

So for my playlist I choose songs that made me realize things about life and how I should keep not only myself happy but also others around me. My list is:
1. Cartoon and Cereal
2. Lost
3. Great Expectations
4. Remember the Name

In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldua, she uses many of the techniques that the templates of They Say/ I Say teach us. She says, “… I kept hearing when I was a child” (pg.34), which correlates to the idea of “standard view” according to They Say/ I Say. Also she uses variation of the implied or assumed template by saying, “Chicanas who grew up speaking Chicano Spanish have internalized the belief that we speak poor Spanish” (pg. 38). Throughout her essay, she provides many variations of the templates of They Say/ I Say, and shows that she has the experience of a good writer.

When I think of happy songs I think of the movie "Up". In the soundtrack, there's a song called "Married Life" by Michael Giacchino. It's an instrumental but sounds so whimsical and simply resonates joyous occasions. Another instrumental I think of when I think of happiness is a song called "Your Hand in Mine" by Explosions in the Sky. Happiness to me is love. The songs that I chose correlate to this idea. A majority of songs that I have chosen for this free write are about love. And so the list continues:
She's Got You High by Mumm-ra
You Only Live Once by The Strokes
Friday I'm in Love by The Cure
D.A.N.C.E. By Justice
Animal By Miike Snow
Such Great Heights by The Postal Service

I crave music to accompany many of my emotions and states of being. However, there are certain artists that are brought to mind that I associate with being “happy” and positive. Some of this music I feel through my whole body and it inspires me to move and dance. Dancing is a state of bliss for me. Instead of getting lost in the dance, I am found in the dance. Other tracks that make me feel good are those associated with love, sensuality, and sexuality. Music with a powerful political message also makes me feel uplifted. Half of my happiness soundtrack is centered in the rhythm and half in the lyrics.
1960’s and 1970’s soul, R&B, and jazz music are very essential to my happiness. Many artists of this genre resonate with me and always send good vibrations to me, whether they be living or legends. Of the many, some of my favorites include: Esther Philips, Marvin Gaye, Etta James, Smokey Robinson, Minnie Riperton, and Otis Redding. The Ohio Players and Earth Wind and Fire always get me high too. I love as they say "cruisin' oldies" that remind me of growing up and cruising around in classic cars. The “Neo-Soul” genre is one that I also enjoy.
To dance to I enjoy many genre from around the world, especially traditional and modern Egyptian, Moroccan, and Tunisian music to belly dance to and Brazilian music to samba to. To inspire me I enjoy much 80s and 90s hip-hop as well as underground and local hip hop. A few of my favorite artists include Public Enemy, Tupac, Paris, Immortal Technique, Hasan Salaam, Magnum O, Ice-T etc…
I always love a well-created erotic, sexual, or “love song”. The Isley Brothers, Sade, Najee, and Jill Scott are a few of the artists that can put me in that mood.
A specific, concise happiness soundtrack with under 10 songs is challenging for me to compile. I have about 10 different happiness soundtracks, or playlists, created at the moment. They depend on what state of happiness I am feeling. It is always growing, changing, progressing, and then starting the cycle over again.

In the Introduction to “They Say / I Say”: The Moves Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to help writers transition and organize their ideas in a clear and organized way. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer provide certain moves in which critical thinking are important and is needed for college. As the authors themselves put it, the “they say” technique is a strong way to achieve stronger critical thinking. Although some people believe this might be non-creative, Graff and Birkenstein insist that these templates they provide will create stronger argumentation. In sum, then, their view is that the best academic writing is deeply more engaging when it’s provided with other people’s point of views. I completely agree on this. In my view I believe these templates that the authors offer us are very effective. For instance, the transitions and the way they format of the template is useful because it’s strong and it include another persons view as well as your own. In addition, these templates are very effective even though some people may argue that they ruin creativity. Some say that they’ll become like mechanical robots because of them following the same exact format all the time. Yet, I would argue that sometimes certain ways of writing are better than others and these templates are very engaging. People, including myself, should get in the habit of writing like these authors. Overall, then, I believe that people should develop their ability to write just as these authors do because it’s a great way to achieve stronger critical thinking.

The term "happiness seems to be synonymous with "joy" or "wealth". Most see happiness as something that comes naturally or something that can be bought. Something that is automatically set up in your system. However, few people would admit money brings you happiness, because most would argue that's not true. On the contrary, most teenagers about 20% of them will experience depression before they reach adulthood. For the truth, happiness can only be found in ones inner desires. Perhaps it is family, or a hobby or even your pets. In this essay, then, closely examining a regular persons life would prove that even a person who has everything and nothing to complain of can be at a lost in search of happiness.

If I had to pick some to play in order to lighten up the mood I would probably pick some classic rock. Often when I'm in a certain mood a specific genre of music will be better for that time but classic rock seems to always put me in a good place. Rubin doesn't see happiness as something we can just magically create, we have to work for it through our everyday lives. For Rubin, achieving happiness is a long process. She focused on one resolution each month for a year, in the end putting it all together to create a new and improved self. Productivity, plenty of rest and lack of stress were all major ways that Rubin was able to achieve happiness. Not everyone will be made happy by the same things though. Some people find happiness through friendship while other people prefer to spend more time alone and are quite content to do so. I would say in general those three things listed above will make most people happy, there are countless other little things in life that can be added to the "happiness list". One message Rubin sends to the reader is that part of the process of achieving happiness is slowing down and really finding out what makes you happy in the first place. Limiting stress helps to lift that fog that can prevent us from finding out what makes us smile.

In sum, then, their view is that the best way to achieve academic writing and more engaging to the reader is when other people give their point of views and opinions. I Agree with Graff and Birkenstein. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend are very useful to the writer to achieve high standards in writing a paper/essay. For instance, using this technique will give you better quality work. In addition, it can perhaps help you get better scores on your papers and pass the class. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that this technique isn’t going to imply to everyone. That everyone has his/hers own style of understanding and writing. They Say I Say Exercise 2.

I think the templates that are provided are a good way to jump start a person writing assignments, and I think it can help them write better.
Someone may have a problem getting the writing process started, (writers' block). So they can use a template as a jump start. As they read the template, ideas starts to flow through their heads.
It can also help a person that is not confident in writing. As they read the template, they add in their parts and read it back to themselves, it will sound better and eventually help them become a better writer.
I think it is a good idea because it helps inexperience writer become better writers and give the experience writer some new ideas that they can add to their writing skills.

In the introduction to "They Say / I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cath Birkenstein provide templates designed to help inexperience writers and experience writers. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the type of writing templates they offer are college level. As the author themselves put it, "We're not putting a gun to arrogant writes head and forcing them to use our template, Hell, it's their own choice. Although some people believe the templates are good ideas, Graff and Birkenstein insist that the results will vary. In sum, then, their view is that their product will inspire more people to become writers. I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend are specified on the products. For instance, if someone is taking there first class on Introduction to college writing, then they will need the template that says Intro to College Writing. In addition, they will get a 20% discount on their next template bundle purchase. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that it's another money scheme, that's why they give the discount, to keep people buying their products. Yet I would argue that for the people who are going beyond the Intro to college writing, the discount will be beneficial to them. Overall, then, I believe templates helps people become better writers or can enhance it, an important point to make given here.

The term "happiness" tends to be synonymous with "contentment". They see being happy as having everything you ever wanted along with excess money and an amazing job. However, Gretchen Rubin, along with many positive psychologists, believe that happiness isn't as much about having things as it is about the pursuit of appreciating what you have and minimizing the excess. If you set a goal for yourself in achieving your happiness project and really focus on being satisfied with your life and the little things that happen in it, you are already taking steps to being happier.
