Freewrite Cyber-Assignment 9-9:50, 1-2:50, 4-5:50

Today we looked at a world without women. Imagine such a world for a moment. Write about it from any perspective you like. Now add the women back. How does it feel? Has anything changed?

I decided to look at another essay from 50 Essays, not previously assigned given the fact that International Women's Day is Friday, March 8, and this is International Women's History Month (does anyone know when this happened?). We read or rather I read, Elizabeth Cady Staton's Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions (379-382).  We started by reading the For Discussion section (382).

Homework is to read Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence (187) and complete number 3 (382). 100-250 words is fine. Post here and bring to class in the morning to share.

We'll listen to the Sojourner Truth essay (Cohen 410) as well tomorrow and look at developing thesis sentences, continuing our conversation about They Say. Next week we will start looking at MLA documentation (Hacker), and start thinking about essay topics based on Rubin's THP.

Homework: All Classes
Homework for Wednesday/Thursday, March 7/8, 2013, is to read the Truth essay and if you like watch the Kerry Washington presentation.   After reading the Truth speech, engage Staton and Truth in conversation about the issues of women's rights coupled with the issues of freedom and justice which Truth asserts need addressing as well.

Use dialogue. When you change speakers, change the line of text.

We will share on Monday and post later at a separate link.

Reading homework, continue in THP.

Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions Question #3

In Stantons essay Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, the author states many factual arguments that were alike Thomas Edison's The Declaration of Independence. Staton makes many points of how men and women are not equal. How women are treated sub par compared to their men counter parts. An example Stanton gives, "He has compelled her to submit to laws, in the formation of which she had no voice." (380) The tone she had set seemed to be as if Stanton was speaking to the general public, like Edison's Declaration of Independence. Anyone that had the ability to hear the words of what she had said, can understand that her words were valid. There is a sense of anguish in her writing Stanton states, "He has withheld from her right which are given to the most ignorant and degraded men - both natives and foreigners." (380) In a way I believe, like Thomas Jefferson compared how women were treated was like how England treated the colonies, and how it had to stop. Equality is only given to those who seek it.

A day without women would be insane. All the men would go crazy and force the weaker men to take the role of women. I probably wouldn't know how to survive, I would probably heat up microwaveable food and keep the house durty. Later I would starve to death and go madly insane.

The immediate first reaction would be, “Whoa... where did all the women go?” Men will start to wonder what is happening. Why did they suddenly leave? Thoughts of abduction, abandonment and quick conclusions emerge while the children are questioning their fathers. Homes that only had a mother to take care of the kids will leave them alone without any supervision, leaving them frightened and confused. Everyone will begin to search for their moms and loved ones while some may just think that it’s nothing and everything will turn out for the better in the end. This will go on for about twenty three more hours and then everything will suddenly go back to normal. The day will go down in history as the most confusing, and only disappearance and reappearance of every female in the world.

Pg 382 # 3 in 50 Essays

It was as if Elizabeth Cady Stanton used The Declaration of Independence as a template for her own Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. She used the same format, nearly identical wording and even lists the facts that were listed in the original document. However, instead of just plainly copying the text and inputting her own ideas of what a declaration should be, she listed all of the rights that men have taken away from women. She does this to draw the reader in on the reality of how women are treated in society and how the words of the Declaration of Independence can be used to show how men have deprived women of their rights.

I predict a world without women would be an extremely violent place. Women help keep order of the world while men attempt to to run it; without women things involving daily routines/life would fall apart. Women are our sanity. They are a man's relief when the rest of the world is getting to him or he feels a tremendous weight on his shoulders. As funny is it may sound, I feel like women keep the earth moving in rotation because without them, there would be alot of angry men looking to annihilate. Without the support of my grandma, mother and older sisters, I wouldn't be the man I am today. Every guy has probably used the phrase, "Women can't live with them, can't live without them", but I'm sure we all know we'd rather have them in our lives.

Stanton's introduction is very much similar to that of the declaration of independence. With a few departures from the actual format of the original, stanton uses the historical significance of the document that outlined American's rights to be free and indepedent to push the issue of women's rights. This is very powerful when used in this way. Thomas Jefforson showed why the men in their country should in fact be free, but the women seem lost amongst the subject of independence. All the more reason for Stanton to use this to confront the men of this country about women's rights head on.

Homework: Declarations of Independence, question 3.

When I read the Declarations of Independence, the grammar in it was a little different than today’s grammar, even though it’s written in English. It was slightly difficult for me to fully understand what was going on in this writing piece. I had to look up more than a couple of words in the dictionary and reread some sentences. However I interpret it as the 13 states of what is now known as the United States wanted independence from the Britain Empire because the British government were mistreating and suppressing its people. I wonder who were they writing this letter too, and for what? From reading the Declaration of Independence, I figured if they addressed this letter to the British, they would just rip it up and still treat its people bad. On top of this, there was another letter written by a lady name Stanton and a couple of other people called, Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, about how women were being limited and controlled by men. In my interpretation, they basically use the Declarations of Independence letter as a template, erased the Declarations of Independence subject and added in there’s. The only differences in these two letters are the subject, points, and examples. After the sentence, “To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world”, that was taken from the Declarations of Independence letter, that’s where they add in their examples and points. The subject, Women was added throughout the whole letter. I think they use the Declarations of Independence letter as a sample because of its recognition, the succeeded, success it had and to show that the authors and people who agrees with the Declarations of Independence letter knows what it feels like to be misuse, and abuse so why do it to someone else. After doing this exercise, I have a basic understanding about the Declarations of Independence letter and a full understanding of the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions writing piece.

A world without women:

In a world without women there is no love. They solidify the very foundation of society. Through their loving care of us all, to their unimaginable levels of compassion they have contributed to the creation and refinement of society on a level that can not be repeated, they have, quite literally and figuratively sewn together the very fabric of our society.

If not for the unconditional love of the feminine mind would we still help the needy, feed the poor, or continue international support of others? Are these not the very essence of the lessons that each of our Mothers, Grandmothers and sisters taught us through the generations? Do we not draw our passions, hopes and dreams from the depth of our mothers smiles?

A world without women is in fact a cold and bitter place, probably much the same as the surface of Mars. A bitter unwelcoming place that holds no refuge to our suffering, no compassion for our pain, no love for our existence.

He has made her, properly, a reckless creature, as she can violate many laws with little regard of reprisal, as long as such actions are committed in the presence of her master. In the confines of matrimony, she is bound to eternal subordination of her husband, he assuming the roll of her superior-the law giving him the ability to neglect her freedom, and to pass judgement upon her.

A world without women to me would run differently or not at all. If it was for a few hours or an day it would affect everything and everyone. There definitely wouldn't be any nurses which is very important and much needed. Some people need directions or given a path way that only women can give. Luckily we won't have a day like that anytime soon.

Thomas Jefferson versus Elizabeth Cady Stanton
By using the verbiage of the Declaration of Independence as a model, Stanton monopolizes on the weight of the original document to impart the same level importance to her issue. By replacing the rolls of the colonists, with that of women, and the Crown with that of man, she creates a parallel between the oppressed; turning the oppressed into the oppressor in his own mind. In doing this, she uses man’s word against himself in an attempt to change the direction of thought and conversation towards and about women. Using the original document also evokes feeling and memories of troubled times. In 1848, when this essay was presented at the Woman’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, the United States was still coming to terms with its own independence. The nation, still divided on many issues, was just learning about the damage that many of its traditional English customs had caused its people.

Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions

Within congress and having to do with politics and there being so many loopholes and ambiguities that hinder the power and effectiveness of word and vocabulary, it makes a lot of sense that the Decalaration of Independence be used as a template. It is a very powerful document that is very meaningful and speaks on a lot of issues that many people take to heart. It may still serve its purpose in modern times.
Wherever it looks as if Elizabeth Cady Stanton may be using the Declaration of Independence as a Template for her own Declaration of Sentiment and Resolutions it may be just that. I was more familiar with the writing of such formal documents through a practice at a younger age wherein I had to fill out formal requests for priveleges that would need to be very well articulated and with super redundant sound judgement or else they would be denied at any one of many levels of a chain of command of hierarchical steps.
I wonder if in the way it was written was just a template based document. Perhaps there were others who used similar templates in the days of the Colonies. Also an open mindedness is observed when I ask myself I do not think that , perhaps Elizabeth C. Stanton was not working on this declaration for more than her full life's span. Maybe she was indoctrinated into some level of ideology by other feminist political writer activists. it is also possible in my view in those days that perhaps the declaration of sentiments and resolutions may have been somehow an idea that was original in hits format and perhaps later bequeathed onto the leaders of the colonies in an effort to make The Declaration of Independence the most properly written document it could have been. It makes sense that in those times a woman could have written either of the declarations and not been given full credit. This happens all the time and with less regard still to this day to who has actually written the work and have somebody else receive credit.

A Day With No Women

Why? Why? Why? It would make sense to me to be in this precarious dilemma. What a different world.Whenever this happens to me it feels like time is going by but very slowly. One can but barely remember his name. We don't have much of an idea, about anything. where men are supposd to know their way around a road map or kbe inclined mechanically apt to put together a bicycle without instructions. There is no desire to do so.We have no one to impress. The thought is null and void that we have any aptitude or skill at all . I think it is mostly about finding out the idea that we are just all big children without our grand-mothers,moms, aunts, sisters, wives, and teachers.

The Declaration of the Seneca Falls Convention, aka the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions used the US Declaration of Independence as the backbone of its argument. It is ridiculous how much restriction was placed on women, I couldn't imagine a time where people had such backward thinking, where women didn't have the basic rights of the average US citizen. Our country has progressed tremendously since then, considering how unjust society used to be.

Now a world without women? I couldn't imagine that either. It seems like most people who commit violent crimes are men. Therefore without women and the sanity and balance that they bring to society, I do not think that we could have a peaceful, fair, smoothly functioning society. Not that it is perfect today, but things would be FAR worse. I would imagine daily life would turn into a prison like environment without women, at least in many areas.

In a world without women for a day everything would be in chaos. At first, the time would pass indifferently but as a couple hours would go by... you know it is time to worry. The kids would be going wild and the men would have a difficult time controlling all the tasks at hand. All the daily tasks that carried out by women would have to be done by the men or the responsible children. Bachelors would be left with video games, sports, work, or other such activities. While the married men would be taking on the tasks of two people. When the women would come back all chaos would come to a stop. The men would tell the women how much the appreciate the women. Also, would tell the women to never leave them with a burden so big as to live without them.

Stanton #3

Elizabeth Cady Stanton uses The Declaration of Independence to bring out her point that women should be treated as equally as men. She uses the phrases in the Declaration of Independence to show that citizens are guaranteed certain rights that are not given to women. She uses the document that this country was built on and proves that The People are not following it. Stanton uses the structure of the Declaration of Independence to signify that this is an important concept that needs to be looked at.

Connections #3: Compare Stanton's declaration to Thomas Jefferson's declaration.

The Stanton's declaration and Thomas Jefferson's declaration have the same format structure essay. In Stanton essay structure, she first addresses the problems that women are facing in her society. Then she uses historical facts to state the problems and uses "He" in common to refer the parties that treat women badly. She describes that women were deprived from all rights that a basic human has. Not only the society that she lives in takes away her rights, her husband also endeavors to make her feel less confident about herself. At the bottom of life, she has nothing to lose, and starts to resist and file petition to the authority and ask for women rights, the rights that she believes that she should have. Similar to Stanton's essay, in the Thomas Jefferson's declaration, Thomas uses the same template as Stanton's. He uses the "He" for describing the parliament and the England authority in common. He also gives many actual facts to support his argument why he and the colonists want to be independent from the England. He, along with other colonists, was so upset about the laws and savages that the parliament has put upon their shoulders. Even though the colonists tried to talk to the Kings about their problems, the Kings didn't listen or solve the colonists' problems. As a result, the colonists have to make the decisions themselves. The Declaration of Independence is the final action that the colonists want to pursue. In reality, when two groups of people have no common goals and thought, the conflicts and problems start to exist then war is unavoidable. Even though the two essays talk about different kinds of independence that they want to pursue, they provide strong evidences to support their points of view. If in the Stanton's essay, she writes about the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions which she says women were treated unequally, and gives the petitions to the States and National legislation to give women equal rights as men, then in Thomas Jefferson's the Declaration of Independence, he writes about the independence of the colonies from the England, which he also provides many evidences of why the colonists want to break free from the England. It is true that the historical significances are so important for Thomas Jefferson and Stanton to support their thesis statements and put their points of view valid.

A World Without Women

I believe in a world without women, even just for a short time, would have a hugely negative impact on the world. Young girls would have no one to look up to or inspire them. Or young boys for that matter. In today's world, girls are not usually encouraged to look up to men and boys are definitely not encouraged to look up to women. How can we improve this without women in the world? Men and women need each other in one way or another- emotionally, physically, biologically. Women provide companionship and different perspectives. Gretchen Rubin mentioned in her book that men like talking to women more than men so that would make their lives different. Without women, a huge part of everyone's lives would be missing.

If Stanten and Sojourner were to have a conversation, I think it would go something like this:
Sojourner: How do you feel women are represented in history?
Stanten: The history of women consists of men doing awful things to women. One after another.
Sojourner: It is as if as women, we have always been enslaved- enslaved to men.
Stanten: Women cannot even make the same amount of money as men for doing the exact same jobs. What kind of world do we live in that is so passively unfair to human beings who are born as equals.
Sojourner: Women are just as capable as men and it is about time we are all respected in the same light.
Stanten: America is meant to be a country of equality- that is a joke. It is something we need to fight for endlessly until complete equality is achieved.

I think both text states the same, woman rights to participate more actively in society. Stanton state than man should give equal rights and opportunities to woman. The woman rights, that man has hold from her, “but that have been given to the most ignorant and degraded men, both native and foreigners”. Also, she states that they should give woman the right to vote, and hold property and wealth, like man do. In addition to this, Truth speech talks about considering woman more like a man, because woman can do everything man does. Nonetheless, they are treated different like a low class citizen that should be kept apart from integrating. Furthermore, she said that Christ was created of the being of a woman and God and therefore woman have a higher status than man.

I found Stanton and Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence to be very similar. You could almost say that both texts were almost identical to each other. However, Stanton’s text was specifically talking about women. On the other hand, Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence was directly towards men. Stanton states that women are equal to men and therefore should be treated equally. She makes her point very clear in her text because she uses the original Declaration of Independence as a model. However, she applies it to women as well. As you can see, she strongly made her point by using the original Declaration of Independence as a model. She clearly believe women deserve the same amount of rights as men.

A Day without Women
Things would definitely not be the same without women. I’d wake up in the morning seeing everybody except my mom. Who would cook for us in the morning? We would all probably not eat that morning. I’d go to school and not see any girl. I would look around seeing nothing but boys and grown men. There would be a world with no love because women wouldn’t be here. Many businesses would not make it through the day because they wouldn’t have their women workers. I would feel empty deep inside. Many family members whom I have love for would not be here. After the day is over, and women come back, everything would return to normal. Women would continue to complete their roles in their daily lives and my mom would continue cooking for me.

There are connections between The Declaration Of Independence by Thomas Jefferson and The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions by Elizabeth Stanton. Stanton begins her essay by using the exact first paragraph as in the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson and Stanton both write about refusing allegiance to a government that oppressed its people and provided proofs of tyranny. There is a connection between the two: Jefferson states proofs of tyranny over the people of the colonies, while Stanton states proof on how woman are deprived of rights.
It is key in Stanton's second paragraph, where she states that “all men and women are created equal”. But this is not the case, as women are not treated as equals. She urges that men have completely oppressed women. They don't have rights. They don't have the right to vote or to be represented in a court of law. According to Stanton, when women marry they are “civilly dead” (380). The husband takes all rights in property and salaries that she makes. As in the Declaration of Independence, she is stating how women are not being treated fairly and are being oppressed by the government, which goes against the “unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (191).
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson urges how the King of England and British rule are unfairly treating and governing the colony. And in The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, Elizabeth Stanton points how the government does not provide women with rights and how men have “absolute tyranny” over women.

Thomas Jefferson vs Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Thomas Jefferson originally wrote The Declaration of Independence to make a point and settlement. Years later during the women's suffrage, a woman named Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. The two documents are very similar. Stanton made slight changes to hers, but used the same format as Jefferson. Jefferson's Declaration only states "men". On the other hand, Stanton included all "Men and Women" to be created equal. Stanton's document is extremely powerful even if it is similar to Jeffersons because she had the courage to make a difference in the entire world. Stanton took a huge risk by adding women into an all men document.

“Women are half of the society, and the give birth and life to the other half” Adolf Hitler said. If I were to be asked to close my eyes for a while and think about a world without women, it would be a different world, a terrible one as scary, ugly and frightening, as if it was the end of it. it would be one without joy, tenderness, caring or love. Without a woman, there would be no form of human life on earth. a woman is a goddess who is the only one capable of giving life.

A moment without women.

A world without women would be horrible. If it was to happen then the history of humanity would cease. Men wouldn't be able to produce babies or be men. The natural order of what were us to would be unstable and the relationship between men would changed forever. Men would have to turn to homosexuality for physical affection. The mental state of all men would have to change to accept that the opposite sex don't exist. There would be many angry and sexual frustrated men. They would endlessly be thinking how to bring women back. Men in the field of science would try to create something similar or alike to a women's essence. Women to not existed in the world would change history forever from the beginning of time. Starting from the bible to the women's movement during the twentieth century. This would be an irony since eighty percent of written history never really included women in the books. Anyways, if women were to appear out of nowhere after having the whole gender gone. There would be a massive sexual revolution all around the world. Men would possibly appreciate the presents of a woman.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” compared to the “Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson wrote were not too different. E.C.S perspective of the document came from a woman’s plea for equal rights. She states the same desperation of inequality that woman in her time was trying to address just like T.J address to the English king. She gave examples of the injustice that her gender had with the opposite. She both address’s men generally and the male dominated government. Her plea for equality is an issue that she’s trying to convey in the form of the desperate tone that T.J conveyed during the revolutionary war through the “ the Declaration of Independence”.
