Week 3, Day 2

Hope Labor Day was one of R&R for everyone (smile). Unfortunately, I learned this morning that many students worked.

1. Today in class we reflected in a freewrite on the following prompt: If human beings are made not born, reflect on key characteristics you've discovered in Mrs. Rose Parks. List, then think about which ones you also embody or want to cultivate.

 2. MCE 1 (We took the "Multiple Choice Exam 1" which looks at grammar and punctuation errors most often encountered in writing. We didn't finish correcting it. Tomorrow in all the English 1A classes students will have for homework the assignment to develop a study plan using Hacker to improve where there were the most errors. Students will email me their plan and their scores, per section and the overall score out of 50 possible.

There is a MCE 2 we will take at the end of the semester, to see how students have improved. This will be a part of the final portfolio.)  The study plan is due by Friday, Sept. 6 via email to me. Students who missed the exam can take it during my office hours. Talk to me.

3. Writing with a Thesis handout (we didn't get to this)

4. They Say (Entering the Conversation) new book --We didn't get to this either.

5. Homework-- Catch up on any incomplete reading for the week in our texts: Theoharis's Rebellious Life, Hacker's Rules, Graff's They Say, Cohen's 50 Essays.

Free write Mrs. Rosa Parks

There are a lot of main characteristics in the book, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” that reflect on human beings are made not born. For example when Mrs. Parks refused to give her seat up to white passenger. This incident resulted to her getting arrested and also this was the beginning of the Alabama bus boycott, which would turn out to be a success. She believed she had the right to sit wherever she pleased because she paid her fair just like everyone else. This to me was very embodying and powerful because no one would dare to do something like that. I also liked the way she went about doing things. She wasn’t rude or disrespectful; she carried her self in a very lady like manner. With her educational and activists background she was able to get what she wanted and that was to be treated equally.

Rosa Parks was a loving, kind, compassionate, caring, brave woman who stood up for and helped others who faced injustices and mistreatment. She truly possessed the characteristics that any decent human being should embody. She was a woman who commanded respect. One who believed in order to receive respect you had to give it. This world would be a much better place if people look to her as a role model for how they should act. She was nice, smart and courageous. She was not a trouble-maker. She was determined and worked hard to improve the world we live in. I feel that I also embody many of these characteristics. I too lend a hand when I can.

Free write: If human beings are made not born reflect on key characteristics you discovered in Mrs. Rosa Parks. List, then think about which ones you also embody or want to cultivate?

Rosa Parks had many key characteristics one of them being that she had courage to stand up to anybody. For example, when she was younger and her brother was about to get whooped by their grandmother she stood in front of her and said no, he did not deserve it. Then there is another example of the infamous standoff she had on the bus. Where the bus driver told her to give her seat to a white man who got on the bus, and she said no. She said no not because she was tired but because she felt just the same amount of rights to keep her seat. So this then sparked the bus boycott and helped solved the problem with the busses. Without her courage these things would have never taken place. I like to say I have courage sometimes I feel like I just cannot do it. I would like to cultivate courage for me because I want to be able to stand up and stand up for what I believe in. The only time I have courage is when I feel comfortable which would have to be on the basketball court. When I would be out there with my brothers there is nothing that can stop me from standing up for them no matter what. So yes I have a little courage, but unless I feel comfortable I have no courage at all.

If human beings are made not born, reflect on key characteristics you've discovered in Mrs. Rose Parks. List, then think about which ones you also embody or want to cultivate.

There are a multitude of characteristics that shaped Mrs. Rosa Parks. Unwavering courage in the face of adversity, honesty, selflessness, respect, unshakable faith in her beliefs, and the knowledge, coupled with the rebellious spirit, to know when to say enough is enough. Her refusing to move from her seat on the bus was just one of the many instances in which she expressed these traits.
These traits are not easy to come by. Some people may be born that way, however most people, including myself, have a hard time standing up for what they believe in. These characteristics are can be acquired, and I believe that I want to cultivate all of these traits in myself.

Rosa Parks had many key characteristics, she had "courage" to stand up to people and fight back, she dedicated her life to try to be the change for her people, although she never focused just on herself, she always thought about everyone. She had courage to stand up because she felt so much inequality and experienced so much mistreatment. Rosa Parks was very "honest" she spoke what she felt and did what she felt was right, without being too loud and crazy about it, she was very smart about the way she handled everything. Another thing she felt was "embarrassment" in chapter 4, Rosa Parks explained how she was embarrassed that the press only took her bus stand and showed the whole world about it, when there were tons of other bus stand cases before hers.

In the "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks" Parks is shown to have a lot of courage, and compassionate towards others. She was able to stand up for herself, and even as a child knew right from wrong. As a child she'd come into conflict with her grandparents as they would punish Rosa's younger brother claiming he didn't have parents showing both her courage to stand up to her elders and compassion towards her younger sibling. Her rebellious character was prompted when she was younger a caucasian boy on skates pushed her, and she pushed back. When threatened to be put into jail her only response was the the boy bothered her first. After many warning from her elders to never stand up for herself, she still did it. There are plenty of characteristics of hers I'd want to embody, specifically a brave, smart, and honest person

Key characteristics that Rosa Parks and many other boycotters had that led to the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott was strength, determination, and patience. Because boycotter refused to take the bus, their way of transportation was by walking or finding a ride from the a carpooler. I image some must have walked for miles to their destination, even with bad weather and getting threatened by white Montgomerians. Rosa Parks may have the most strength and determination out of all the other boycotters and leaders. Not only was she disrespected for being black, but also for being a woman. Many of the male leaders of the NAACP disregarded her early years of fighting for civil rights. After the boycott ended, no one wanted to hire her. Not even the NAACP would not give her a paying position. She had to live everyday knowing that she was unable to support her husband and mother. She continued to receive threats as well. Most people in her position would have become depressed and even kill themselves. Rosa Parks dealt with each and every day, allowing as little of the negative stress get to her as possible.

Key characteristics I discovered in Mrs. Rosa Parks were bravery, patience, and wisdom. Everyone involved in the Civil Rights Movement had to be brave but most people can agree that leaders like Mrs. Parks and King showed the most courage. For the movement to succeed, everyone had to be patient. That doesn’t mean they weren’t bold and aggressive but they refrained from using violence. To me, that not only shows patience but it showed compassion. Much wisdom and experience was needed to lead the people of the movement. I can say I embody bravery because like Mrs. Parks, I stand up for what’s right no matter the consequences. I want to cultivate patience and wisdom. I can say that I am patient but I have never had the degree of patience that was needed to conduct peaceful protests. I like to think that I am wise however I am young and still have a lot to learn.

Some of the key characteristics that I found on Mrs. Rosa Parks were that she was brave, intelligent, consistent, and compassionate. Rosa Parks dedicated a large amount of her life towards the civil rights movement. Not only being married and being away from her husband for long periods of times she still was devoted on her goals. Also being the only woman to stand up for her rights was something not every woman did. She was often looked upon on and not taken seriously, but her devotion and dedication led her to boycott on the bus and to suffer the consequences that were coming from those actions. Rosa Parks was a strong woman, having to deal with no one hiring you and not being able to support for her family, only made her stronger.

A few characteristics I discovered in Mrs. Rosa Parks was bravery, strength, respect and commitment. Mrs. Rosa Parks had demonstrated bravery throughout her life, from standing up for herself to standing up for civil rights. Most of the time, she was taken seriously for her thoughts and views because she had the bravery and strength to not be afraid to speak out. I remember in the book, it said that when Mrs. Rosa Parks said no people actually listened and knew that was the only and final answer. She had build this personality that showed how powerful she was. But in order to develop that strength, Mrs. Rosa Parks had to earn respect. The only way she could earn it was by respecting others. Another characteristic I noticed was that she was a very dedicated and committed person. The only way she would have made a difference during the Civil Right Movement was only by staying true to what she believed in and following through with expressing it. I would like to embody or cultivate all these characteristics because in order for me to be successful is by being brave, have strength, earn respect, and being committed to my beliefs even if there are obstacles in the way.

The key characteristics you find while reading “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks”, is that African American are just as equal to Caucasian during this period, whether it be emotions such as manners, anger, sadness, happiness, courage or somebody`s educational level. From this book, as you continue to read Caucasian people have an easy life going to school and finding jobs to work, while having nothing to fear on a daily basis, whereas Africans live in fear every day as they work hard and earn everything themselves to be as equals or even smarter or wealthier than certain Caucasian people. Therefore having the question contradictory when relating to The Rebellious of Mrs. Rosa Parks”, where Africans aren't looked as human being even though they may be in some way superior to Caucasians at this time.

Reading " The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks", I have discovered a Rosa Parks I never knew of. I found that Rosa Parks had key characteristics that made her the extraordinary human being she was. These characteristics included everything from kind, humble,BOLD,courageous unafraid (when it really mattered, for example when she refused to get up from her sit on the bus.)She is a true example of a hero especially during the Civil Rights era. Although I do not have all of the standing characteristics of Mrs. Rosa Parks I feel as if I already share some familiar traits, such as my bravery I am not scared to call something out if it unjust. We both share an interest in politics and helping others as well as the community we live in, and our love for our family.

Some key characteristics of Ms. Rosa Parks are her courage, commitment and strong will to follow her moral compass. Ms. Rosa Parks teaches us all a very important lesson in her decision not to give up her seat, her decision was not just due to stubbornness or the tall tale that her feet were sore, but her famous choice shows us that we can have an impact if we are willing to stand up for what we believe in. In myself I hope to cultivate the ability to stick to my guns and always stand up for what is right, even when it is not the easiest road to follow.

If I had to try and list Rosa Parks most apparent qualities, I would include at least (though not necessarily limit to):
• truthful/honest
• rebellious
• hardworking
• "down-to-earth"
• popular
• firm/un-wavering
• reasonable
…just to name a few.
In my opinion, such characteristics can be seen in many of the actions she's taken and choices she's made- even during her early childhood. Obviously, all of these are admirable traits, and I would hope/do strive to attain some level of all of them similar to the ways she did. I think many of us today could learn from observing the issues Rosa Parks thought about, what she thought about them, and how she acted on them back then. Such characteristics could make us better as truth-seeking rebellions, members of a society, or just better people in general.

Rosa Parks is a courage woman and believes in what she does. The book covers many examples in which it shows her being courage. The NAACP, lead by Nixon chose to use Parks as a case because she is strong and not easily broken by discouraging people during that time. Parks was a strong independent woman who had a sense of individual thinking towards what justice is. It is partly her effort that made way for the boycott movement, follow by the civil right movements. Other aspect of her character includes commitment, intelligence, and individualism made her a symbol of freedom. The few characteristic that I would like to develop from Rosa Parks are commitment and individualistic thinking. Individualistic thinking is a noble quality to up hold when people around you detest you because of what you hold is true to you and only you; while people's opinion are easily control by the media. I have always been easily persuade by others ever since I could remember. And people who are individuals are the people whom I look up to.

At risk of stating the obvious, I believe Mrs. Parks embodies rebelliousness and bravery. In my limited knowledge of Park's personality traits I will only venture to say that her actions on the infamous bus ride, at the time of the civil right's movement, revealed a woman whose sense of responsibility persuaded her to challenge and to act. It was the bravery of that day that I correlate with rebelliousness. Parks demonstrated a willingness to question normalized injustice, which says to me that she was also a risk taker.

-I am looking forward to learning more about Mrs Rosa Parks as I catch up with the class. At that point I hope I might offer more substantial insight.

Thanks for reading.

I feel like Rosa Parks was vastly different than many other African American activists. Not a lot of women were as rebellious, courageous, and classy at the same time as she was. That's what set her apart, along with her resilience. Most black people would have not stepped out as far out of their boundaries as Rosa Parks did. Activism wasn't just a hobby or an extra-curricular activity with Mrs. Parks. Activism was embodied in her, and it was transparent as her dedication and her drive got her to become the woman that she became. As a classmate of mines Briana mentioned once in a literature circle, she suffered in silence for about most of her life, which also points to her resiliency. Rosa Parks could have given up and she could have still been well-known and well respected, but she decided to pave the way for the future. Rosa Parks is a shark in a fish tank.

The few characteristics that I wanna embody from Rosa Parks is her passion. Passion comes from within and it can bring so much power to somebody. Just having enough self-power that is fueled by passion can accomplish many goals that my mind and my heart would set out for me.

We're influenced by many factors as we grow up, but there are certain traits that we learn, and others that we are born with. During the time period Mrs.Rosa Parks lived in segregation was societies biggest flaw. It's sad that we do not get to hear much about this remarkable women that stood up for the rights of many people. Being new to this class, and still catching on to the reading i hope to learn more about her struggles. Already having some background about her i can already say she was a strong, rebellious and courageous woman. many of us don't posses those qualities, but aspire to having no fears and being able to stand up for yourself just like she did.

Rosa Parks didn't only demonstrate patience, she also demonstrated intelligence, strength, commitment and bravery. Rosa Parks is a big role model for a lot of people. All these characteristics that she showed make her who she is. She is a brave woman for trying to make a difference in the world, especially since women had no power back then. Rosa Parks teaches me how if I want to accomplish something and make a difference, I have to have the same characteristics that she did. She never gave up, she never backed out and she never showed that she was weak. In order for me to get what I really want in life I have to be patient, strong and committed. Rosa Parks came from a line of fighters. From her father to mother, they both stood for something and Rosa Parks embodied them both in knowledge, courage, determination, and patience.
She gave "standing your ground" a whole new outlook.
I myself hold these same determinations, cant really say they are to the same level as Rosa Parks, but the results will be the same. Rosa Parks I take felt that someone need to take a stand in order for change to occur. My same thoughts concur with hers...someone must begin the process, but at the same time just like Rosa Parks you cant falter if things get rough because others are watching you and learning and gaining the determination and courage you are passionately displaying.

Human beings are made not born., Why? Because humans make or create themselves as they get older. Mrs. Rosa Parks was raised and taught to stand up for herself and the right thing. Sometimes it's hard to build these traits and characteristics but having to build it and use it for the right cause is great.

Some characteristics that I found in Rosa Parks were rebelliousness, popularity and awareness. One can see the awareness of the Civil Rights movement in the characteristics of Rosa Parks when she states that she was aware of the leaders of the civil rights movement were fighting for rights before she was born, and she was also aware about their causes and plights. The popularity of Mrs. Rosa Parks during the Civil Rights movement could be seen by her status during rallies, protests, and how many leaders during this era respected her with dignity and equality. Lastly, Mrs. Rosa Parks can be seen as rebellious by her “sitting” in the Alabama bus in December 1, 1955, a period in which African Americans were forced to give up seats for the ethnically “dominant” whites.

The key characteristics I have discovered in Mrs. Parks was her persistence, great vision of morality, and activism. Giving the atmosphere at that time and when the majority re-frame from the whole civil rights movement, it must have taken lots of strong will to have the self-determination to keep going. Her persistence nature is very inspirational and it's the trait in which I can definitely pick up on as I go through life.
