They Say-Skeptics May Object

(Naysayers Paragraph)
1. “Some may say marijuana should remain to be considered a Schedule 1 narcotic drug seeing as how it could be consider a gateway drug. Marijuana should not be overlooked because it’s a drug that some use for medicine for their illness. Those people may argue that marijuana is a serious drug that should be considered dangerous because it can easily get someone the need to try harder drugs once they have officially become a person who uses drugs. I would have to agree to a certain extent because marijuana is not a drug that can harm anyone and in fact it may bring a sense of peace to someone who is in pain because of an illness.”

2. In the Stanton essay, I think she anticipated naysayers because she spoke of the views of men, women of her time, the government, and her supporters. She anticipated men objecting to her sentiments and had a response to the objections. I think Stanton knew she would have naysayer that opposed her sentiments and that’s why she chose to mimic Thomas Jefferson version of the Declaration of Independence. Stanton may not have represented the objections fairly because she spoke of facts which are indisputable but that could be due to her being fed up with the way women were mistreated. The introduction of the naysayers in Stanton’s essay does strengthen her arguments because it made her stand out in comparison to the women of her time. Stanton and her supporters battled everyone in her fight for women’s rights and I think the naysayers helped in the process because she was forced to prove them wrong.

They Say, I Say: “Skeptics may Object” Exercises

1) Of course some readers may challenge my view by insisting that by ending the drug war law enforcement officer careers will no longer be a worthy, lucrative career to pursue. However, I insist that this will make lives better for the families of law enforcement officers who get entangled and sometimes die in conflicts involving drug crimes while on duty. Ending the drug war will bring relief to those families.

2) I think that Sojourner Truth answers her critics really well by emphasizing the qualities that still make her a woman even as a slave and how yet she was not treated like the way that the white men says that a woman should be treated. I think she speaks for all of the slave women who could not speak because they are not free from slavery, but I also think that it is interesting that she did not get into the issue of suffrage and representation for women and did not describe what would that means for her, something that Stanton and Anthony did address in their essay (i.e what does women’s rights mean to her? She mentions it, but what does that mean?) I think this might be because Truth simply didn’t live in the same world with the white men as did Stanton and Anthony and did not have the same point of view about white men as Truth did.

They Say, “Skeptics May Object” Exercises

1. Of course, many will probably disagree on the grounds that Marijuana can cause short-term psychological effects. Smoking Marijuana can cause paranoia, anxiety, and depression. Many would argue that these effects can deteriorate a person’s relationship with others, causing them to drift away or lash out. However, I would argue that alcohol causes people to act in a similar way. So why are people allowed to consume alcohol legally but not smoke Marijuana? Marijuana has medicinal properties that help many people who are in pain. As for the negative effects, I say that there are many other approved drugs that have worse side effects. It is those drugs that we have to restrict further.
2. When I was in eleventh grade I had to write a paper whether or not it was appropriate for high school students to read the book “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” In my essay I had to consider both sides of the argument. As part of the assignment, I had to identify what those who were opposed to the reading of the book say and why I disagreed with it. I looked at a few of the objections and chose two to respond to. I believe that I represented the objections fairly. As I was in high school at the time I wrote this, I was able to apply a student’s point of view as to why it is important for us to read this book. I believe that my arguments were strong. I could have definitely used some of the language provided in “they Say.” I think the introduction of the naysayer in my essay strengthens my argument because it shows the audience that I am aware of what others think and that I am willing to defend my claim.

They Say/ I Say Exercise p. 90-91

1. Sure it will be tough to finally legalize marijuana all around the country and many will probably disagree of its used unless it is for medicinal purposes. There are reasoning behind this and that’s a fact. It makes a user unable to drive or really do any type of activity because it makes that used dull and inoperative because of the substance that’s inside marijuana that somehow makes you partially impaired. But if we set rules to when and how we can use it, it will help end this war on drugs and maybe; just maybe completely end this war on drugs.

2. In the essay written by Stanton “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, she gave multiple arguments about the inequality between men and women. She made all her arguments very strong and responded to it as well. I will definitely use the words that she used in this essay. Words like “inalienable”, “distinction”, “remuneration” and many more. I think these words will make my arguments a little stronger and prove a point.

They Say Exercises (pg. 90-91)

1. Proponents of marijuana staying illegal are right to argue about how dangerous drug dealers are sometimes, but they exaggerate when they claim that legalizing it would ruin the United States. The real reason these dealers are dangerous is because of the fact that it is ILLEGAL. Drug dealers will do anything to sell, often using dangerous actions if caught in the act by police. If marijuana was legalized, danger wouldn't be present at all.

2. "Ain't I a Woman?" by Sojourner Truth gives marvelously simplistic examples of the inequality between white women and men and women of color. Although her arguments were short, her point of view got a across, telling us how white women and colored women are treated the same, yet in different ways. I admired how powerful she makes women sound throughout the essay.

With no doubt in mind, there will always be those who are for the legalization of marijuana and those who stand against it and than there are those who are in between who feel as though marijuana should only be legal to those who are prescribe it for medical purposes. There are definitely side of affect to marijuana but everyone experience it differently; some say they think better, some say they become sluggish, while others say they become more active. To say it is complete a bad drug I can not because I have no real proof and no one has proven anything that makes me think marijuana is a terrible drug to get not legalized. I have not heard about marijuana causing the same amount or even nearly the same amount of danger to society as beer. Yet marijuana is the main drug people are worrying about if it should or should not be legalized.

In Stanton's essay she made sure to include the mind frame of both sides of the parties in which she discussed. In any good essay about real life situation it is a highly recommended to think about everyone's sides of the situation and address it. In Stanton's case when talking about woman's inequality amongst men speaking on what the opposing side would have to say in disagreement was the direction she headed giving examples of what the opposing side would have to say or how they would have felt.

Of course many will probably disagree on the grounds that that history is derived from long before our times. That women have always had the role of caretaker, house maker. Dating back to caveman times when women stayed in with children and man hunted and brought home the food. It has historically been the men that have been in charge of the world outside of the home. This is why women have had such a difficult time rising above it. Some might say that we are “programmed” this way from birth. Women and men genetically are the way they are, and nothing we can do can change that.

Naysayers

If I believed that declaring an end to the war on drugs would solve the drug problems in this country; I would be the first person on the bus. The author contents that drug abuse is mainly related to a lack of policies in the United States that would decriminalize the small time users and sellers of marijuana. He points out that countries like Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands all have policy that include decriminalization of marijuana that seem to be working. He is right when he states that there are many countries that have a successful marijuana policy. What he has not pointed out is that drug abuse in this country includes not only marijuana, but also include both legal and illegal drugs such as Alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, heroin, Inhalants, LSD and many other drugs. We cannot assume for one moment that the war on drugs is center around the issues of just marijuana; if we do there will be; according to the Substances Abuse and Mental Health Services Association, over 22.6 million Americans over the age of 12, who are abusing or dependent several kinds drugs;they all will be left out in the cold.
