Questions of Context
1. Mortimer J. Adler thinks it is fine to mark up a book of your own because he believes that writing between the lines is just as important as reading between the lines. Adler thinks when owning a book, people should mark the books so that the readers can enrich their minds with the story and information that the book contains.
2. There are three kinds of book owners. Adler thinks the third book owner is the best, which is the owner who owns books with marked and loosened books. I thought the second book owner was the best because I like to keep my books clean and new looking but after reading what Adler thinks about marking books, I actually think it is a good idea to make markings in the books that I read.
3. There are three useful results of marking in a book when reading it. First, it keeps you awake, writings makes you remember the thoughts you had, and thinking can express itself in words. I think remembering the thoughts I had matters the most so that when I read the writings, I would remember what happened in the book and what I was thinking.
4. Writing in a book result in a “conversation” with its author because Adler claims that marking a book is an expression of differences or agreement of opinion with the author. A conversation is useful because in order to understand the context, there should be a conversation by asking and answering questions with someone, in this case, the author.
5. Alder describes his techniques how he marks a book, I feel the technique of underlining is most useful to me because whenever I go back and see an underline somewhere, I know that I should read it over because it might be something important or an interesting part of the story.
Questions of Form
1. There are many examples indicate that Adler wrote this essay over fifty years ago such as, the way that Adler writes does not sound like it is the present but the past and he writes about some other readings like the Federalist Papers. If I were to update the essay, I would write about some readings that is recent and relate it to the essay.
2. The comparison/contrast of book owners advances Adler’s argument because he describes how each of the three book owners are which helps his essay a lot by adding on some kind of comparison between different kinds of book owners.
3. Adler uses analogies by comparing the purchase of food or furniture with the ownership of a book. I think that his analogies in clarifying and supporting his points are successful and persuading for people to start or make more markings in their book.

In the essay, “How to Mark a Book,” Mortimer J. Adler, writes about why making marking in books are better than just keeping the book clean and new. Adler has many examples of different types of book owners, kinds of devices for marking a book, and even analogies in which one can own a book. Adler’s advice for marking books would be helpful in other subjects other than English. The fact that Adler suggests it is good to mark books, marking in any kind of book just to make notes to oneself about what is going on in a certain part of that book. Instead of just marking English books, it would be extremely useful if students would mark other subject books such as; History, Math, or even Science. Basically, marking books is important because it can help remember thoughts and is also an act of love.

Adler has shown how to mark a book and how it is important for the reading. It helps people remember the main idea and arrange the thoughts. He also points out three different book owners who use books differently. One buys books but never touches them. One buys books, reads books but do not know what the books are about. The other one read, and mark the book so that everything would stay not only on the page but also stay in the head. Marking up a book help us remember what particular word, phrase, or paragraph is important and express the main idea.
Marking book is a good way of remembering; however, beside marking a book, we have to write our thought next to where we mark in order to know what our ideas about that particular idea. If we do not write down any idea or thought, all of the information and our thought would disappear easily. Therefore, while marking a book, why don't we write down our thought.

adler has shown us how important it is to mark down a book and it is good for what your reading, and also its good to remember it. adler also reminds us that you shouldn't mark up a book if it not yours because brings up lot of confusion. marking up is also important because it keeps you awake when you are reading. adler says the sign of a good reader is the ability to read. when you read a book you should pay attention to what you are reading not stare at your notes.
