Literal/Free Paraphrasing

Today in class we continued our conversation on paraphrasing and practiced the literal and the free paraphrase in Pidd pp. 330 to 347. We also completed the index cards. The questions are after number 5 in the syllabus where you list your goals. I accidentally deleted the heading on the printed syllabus. The heading is there in the on-line post.

I made copies of the section on paraphrasing for students without books. I gave the handouts to students last Thursday. If you miss class call someone. I also passed out copies of the syllabus, however it is more correct here (on-line).

The class is shrinking. If you are still enrolled, don't stop coming to class and arrive on time.

Homework is to take a paragraph in Dreams for My Father and do a literal paraphrase. I might have told you to do both a literal and a free for the same passage, but I don't remember, so we can do the free paraphrase in the morning.

You will post samples of both here for homework tomorrow.

I hope you are finding the exercises useful. If you can state something in your own words, this means you know it. The practice of literal paraphrasing, while not academically ethical, is a useful tool when struggling to comprehend an author's words.

I ask students to use paraphrase, direct citations and block quotes in their essays. One of each in a 750 word essay is generally a sufficient use of the text.

Keep reading Dreams and keep a reading log. Thursdays will probably be our Literature Circle day, with other discussion opportunities introduced whenever possible. What's going on with the Obama Administration? Have you seen any of your issues addressed?

A stimulus is in order and thus another failed boost to the economy is in order. The money derived for this new money injection is taxed from tax payers, therefore, new money is not being generated - only redistributed. The money is simply spread around and rearranged so as to make for the false image of prosperity where no progress towards prosperity is actually happening. As the late, great boxing trainer Ray Arcel (the brains behind the brawn of the legendary pugilists Benny Leonard, the Ghetto Wizard and The Hands of Stone, Roberto Duran) would say we are getting hit with a Sucker-punch. Under capitalism, prosperity comes only by result of labor division among members of a society and the ensuing circulation of money this process causes. Labor is the lynchpin to the functionality of this society and thus, the deciding force behind prosperity, or as is presently the case at hand, a lack thereof. More labor generates more circulation of money through the economy and consequently greater prosperity. This new plan to inject already taxed money back to the tax payer will fail - just like the others that have came before this have - because money is only being rearranged and labor is not being increased. In sum, money is being placed in a high pile and smeared down over a greater surface to create the illusion of an increased size. No actual increase is happening. I stop to wonder if this strategy is aimed towards not actually fixing the problems of our economy but instead designed to purposely fail so as to further highlight how bad our economy truly is at this stage. With the American dollar clinging to death and this strategy being used as a grand demonstration to prove just how bad our current situation truly is, we could be better persuaded to turn to newer and more radical solutions to fix our problem. Perhaps something even as radical as: a completely new form of currency.

I think Obama also had a plan to use 250 m of tax payer money for free condoms. Two points:

1. Nobody even uses those condoms. I mean yeah I grab like a few whenever I swing through but its not like I even need them.

2. The economy can't afford loose spending like this at this time. Perhaps at another tangent could we as a society afford this special luxury but this time is truly not at hand now.

But I guess Obama must have come to his senses as this plan was dropped and allowed to come and go like the game winning baseball passing the first baseman Bill Buckner's legs in the 1986 World Series.

Hi Thomas:

Where did you get your information about the Stimulus package, which is not gone yet, as far as I can see. Obama's still pushing it. Why are you opposed to it? Finally a bale out for the regular Joe or Josephine :-)

Paragraph # 3 on Page 20 of “ Dreams from My Father” By: B. H. Obama

Literal Paraphrase:

Grandpa got upset once he learned about the day’s events. He questioned his daughter and tool down all the pertinent information. The following, Grandfather met with the head educator. Then he contacted each family involved and they all had equivalent answers.

Free Paraphrase:

When Obama’s grandfather learned about the day’s events, he got upset, All the specific information he recorded , he took down while questioning his daughter, The head educator met with him the next day, Most of the families were contacted; identical replies were given by all the parents.

Ch 1 paraphrase 2/2/09

Original Pg 13
Even the trauma of bank failures and farm foreclosures seemed romantic when spun through the loom of my grandparents’ memories, a time when hardship, the great leveler of all that had brought people closer together, was shared by all. So you had to listen carefully to recognize the sublet hierarchies and unspoken codes that had policed their early lives, the distinctions of people who don’t have a lot and live in the middle of nowhere. It had to do with something called respectability-there were respectable people and not-so-respectable people-and although you didn’t have to be rich to be respectable you sure had to work harder if you weren’t.

Literal paraphrase

The hardships of business collapses seemed enchanting when seen from the perspective of Obama’s ancestor’s past; the 1940’s were defined as a time of adversity, which seemed to equalize communities. If one concentrated they could recognize the secretly implemented status of people and the unuttered rules that ruled the communities during the passing of time. Characteristics of the community’s inhabitants controlled them. Their individuality was all they had since they were minimalists in a deserted area. The basis for these segregations was to be admirable- some beings were admirable however, many remanded difficult to admire. One did not need to have wealth to be admirable however, in order to be admirable, money unfairly aided people and one was forced to struggle more if they were not rich.

Free paraphrase

Misfortunes can bring communities together and create equality, for all the inhabitants of a community, which might not have existed before. However, from the perspective of Obama’s ancestors misfortunes such as business failures appeared enchanting. Existing in a desolate place with few possessions and only the community and long inbreeded rules to hold on to, the long ingrained rules became the guide of the community. The rules were impossible to break and status became based on how well one was admired. Unfairly, poor citizens were not labeled as admirable; having wealth aided the citizens of the community to become admirable even if they were not admirable by societies moral standards.

Original Text:

Someone shouted out my name. The mask dropped to my side, and with it my daydream, and I saw my grandparents again standing there, waving almost frantically now. This time I waved back; and then, without thinking, I brought the mask again up to my face, swaying my head in an odd little dance. My grandparents laughed and pointed at me and waved some more until the customs official finally tapped me on the shoulder and asked me if I was an American.
I nodded and handed him my passport.

Free Paraphrase:

He heard his name being called. After lowering the wooden carving from in front of his face, and regaining his grip on reality, he noticed that the people standing nearby were his grandparents. Unlike before when he was daydreaming, this time he responded to their beckon by placing the carving over his face once more, and starting an awkward flit.
His grandparents, amused by such antics, summoned him towards them until an immigration officer noticed him, and helped him with his customs documents.

Literal Paraphrase:

A voice called out to Obama. He lowered his facial covering, and broke free from his musing, shortly before spotting his mother’s parents close by, gesturing somewhat hurriedly. He responded with a wave, then began, absentmindedly, to lift the facial covering up to his head while wavering oddly with an ungainly prance.
His mother’s parents chuckled, gestured, and motioned again to summon him until an immigration officer at last patted him next to his neck and inquired about his US citizenship.
Obama bobbed his head and presented his visa.

Original Paragraph, Chapter 1, Paragraph 1

A few months after my twenty-first birthday, a stranger called to give me the news. I was living in New York at the time, on Ninety-fourth between Second and First, part of that unnamed, shifting border between East Harlem and the rest of Manhattan. It was an uninviting block, treeless and barren, lined with soot-colored walk-ups that cast heavy shadows for most of the day. The apartment was small, with slanting floors and irregular heat and a buzzer downstairs that didn’t work, so that visitors had to call ahead from a pay phone at the corner gas station, where a black Doberman the size of a wolf paced through the night in vigilant patrol, its jaws clamped around an empty beer bottle.

Literal Paraphrase

Sometime had passed since his 21st birthday when a person he didn’t know phoned to give him the report. His place of residence was the Big Apple during this period, located on 94th in the middle of 2nd and 1st, an area linking East Harlem and Manhattan. The street didn’t invite company, there were no trees and it was pretty much empty, with blackish-grey buildings that made reflections most of the time. The dwelling wasn’t very big, with floors that were somewhat tilted, a thermostat that went off and on and the doorbell on the lower level was out of order. People who came by had to appeal from the telephone at the fuel station located on the corner, where a large black dog was on guard throughout the night.

Free Paraphrase

His 21st birthday had finally come and a stranger called to give the report. He currently resided in the Big Apple, located on 94th in the middle of 2nd and 1st, which belonged to a section that had no name, from the edge of East Harlem to Manhattan. Unfortunately, the block that he stayed on was not very welcoming, absent of trees and empty space, with ash colored apartments that reflected a heavy beam. The apartment space wasn’t very big, the floors were slanted, the heater worked whenever it wanted and the doorbell down below was completely out of order. The guests that came to visit had no choice but to call in advance from a booth that was located at the fuel station on the corner, where a dark colored canine that was rather big in stature walked back and forth securing the premises.

Original Text (Pg. 26 last paragraph):

I discovered this article, folded away among my birth certificate and old vaccination forms, when I was in high school. It's a short piece, with a photograph of him. No mention is made of my mother or me, and I'm left to wonder whether the omission was intentional on my father's part, in anticipation of his long departure. Perhaps the reporter failed to ask personal questions, intimidated by my father's imperious manner; or perhaps it was an editorial decision, not part of the simple story that they were looking for. I wonder, too, whether the omission caused a fight between my parents.

Free Paraphrase:

When Obama was in Jr. High, while shuffling through aged documents from when he was born, hidden between them he found a composition in a publication. Having little length, it cinsisted of an image of Obama's father. While Obama read the article he noticed that nothing was said about him or his mother. He was curious about whether leaving them out was done deliberately by his father, perhaps while waiting on the extnded leave. Maybe the writer of the story didn't ask in depth questions, scared by Obama's father's overbearing behavior, or thought maybe it was the publishers choice. In puzzlemant he thought if the absence might have caused quarrel between his mother and father.

Original Text (Pg. 36 3rd Paragraph):

He now finished tying the laces on my gloves and stepped back to examine his handiwork. My hands dangled at my sides like bulbs at the ends of thin stalks. he shook his head and raised the gloves to cover my face.

Literal Paraphrase:

Obama's stepfather immediately completed lacing Obama's leather mitts and retreated to check his workmanship. Obama's fist drooped at his sides like knobs at the end of slim shafts. Obama's stepfather rattled his skull and lifted the leather mitts to hide Obama's face.

Original Text(Pg. 22)

Then time and place began to conspire, transforming potential misfortune into something tolerable, even a source of pride. Sharing a few beers with my father, Gamps might listen to his new son-in-law sound off about politics or the economy, about far-off places like Whitehall or the Kremlin, and imagine himself seeing into the future. He would begin to read the newspaper more carefully, finding early reports of America's newfound integrationist creed, and decide in his mind that the world was shrinking, sympathies changing....

Literal Phrase:

Then the land and clock began to work together, changing bad luck into something permissible, even a source of personal worth. And his grandfather would share drinks with Barack's father, he would tell him about the situations of the places he's been, while his grandfather imagined himself there. From then he would read the newspaper more cautiously, discovering America's beliefs or racial equality, and he settled with the thought that the world was growing smaller, his feelings changing; that his family, who originated from Witchita, had moved into the middle of the new world.

Free paraphrase:

The world began to change around Barack's grandfather. The spread of racial equality altered the view of what he had before. Even more, his son-in-law, who was African-American, greatly influenced his new outlook. He began to read about the changes that were happening around the U.S. Further more, these changes were happening right in front of him.

Original Text: ( pg. 4 )

The old man's silence impressed me; I thought him a kindred spirit. Later, my roommate would find him crumpled up on the third-floor landing, his eyes wide open, his limbs stiff and curled up like a baby's. A crowd gathered; a few of the women crossed themselves, and the smaller children whispered with excitement. Eventually the paramedics arrived to take away the body and the police let themselves into the old man's apartment. It was neat, almost empty - a chair, a desk, the faded portrait of a woman with heavy eyebrows and a gentle smile set atop the mantelpiece. Somebody opened the refrigerator and found close to a thousand dollars in small bills rolled up inside wads of old newspapers and carefully arranged behind mayonnaise and pickle jars.

Literal Paraphrase:

The voiceless elderly man intrigued me. I saw him as a peaceful gentle man. My roommate discovered him in the fetal position with his eyes opened widely. A group of people came together, some excited, some worried, to watch the paramedics take the corpse away. The medical officials arrived to retrieve the body and the law enforcement let themselves into the gentleman's apartment. It was well kept, almost barren with few furniture and art. One individual discovered nearly one thousand dollars in cash hidden in newspaper placed behind food in the refrigerator.

Free Paraphrase:

He was intrigued by the elderly man's voice. He would see the gentle man as a peaceful person. The corpse of the gentle man was discovered in the fetal position by his roommate. When it was time to take the corpse away, people came together some excited or worried as they watched. They found the gentle man's apartment well kept with little furniture and art work. As they were scavenging through his apartment in the refrigerator they found a bag full of money.

Dreams from my Father

Original text pg. 16: And that's where the story might have stopped: a home, a family, a respectable life. Except something must have still been gnawing at my grandfather's heart. I can imagine him standing at the edge of the Pacific, his hair prematurely gray, his tall, lanky frame bulkier now, looking out at the horizon until he could see it curve and still smelling, deep in his nostrils, the oil rigs and corn husks and hard-bitten lives that he thought he had left far behind. So that when the manager of the furniture company where he worked happened to mention that a new store was about to open in Honolulu, that business prospects seemed limitless there, what with statehood right around the corner, he would rush home that same day and talk my grandmother into selling their house and packing up yet again, to embark on the final leg of their journey, west, toward the setting sun...

Literal paraphrase: Possibly the tale could’ve ceased: a house, relatives, a decent life. But there was something pressing at my grandpa’s insides. I can picture him on his feet at the end of the ocean, his beard suddenly gray, his high, skinny figure bigger now, staring into the backdrop until he catches it bend and still staining, the insides of his nose, the gasoline and farms and struggle of a life he imagined he had let go a long time ago. So that when the boss of the sofa business where he was employed decided to declare that a fresh shop was ready to go in Hawaii, that company opportunities perceived as interminable there, with statehood being so near by, he would storm to the house later that day and convince my grandma into getting rid of their current dormitory and get moving another time, to set off on the last stage of their quest, west, into the dropping orange light.

Free paraphrase: It could have easily been the end; everything in their life set. Only the feeling never left my grandfather. I still see him by the ocean, gray hair, tall, slim figure with a little more weight now, staring out as far as could see, with the stench of gasoline and farms still in his nose, the life he remembered only as a distant memory. His boss at his current furniture company told him about Honolulu opening a new store, stating the business opportunities were unlimited, with statehood near-by, he ran home without waiting another day, convincing my grandmother to sell their house and to get ready to leave once more, setting off in the final chapter of their book, west, toward the setting sun.

Hi Marvelous Marvin

I just wanted to comment on your statements about the President's plan for our down-trodden econmy. I am not sure if you are in the 9-10 class or the earlier one, but your statements drew questions from me to you. How is it that a few people feel that what Pres. Obama plans to do is so out of the question, but yet, no one decided to question their former leader while he was putting everybody and anybody in dire straits? How many billions did he spend or better yet, trillions on a war that should not have been? Where was all of the opposing folk when gas almost reached $5? No one asked Bush or even incenuated that he was "putting a band aid" on a gash that required stitches? We all are entitled to our opinions and I wanted you to know of mine as well.

Re: God's Child

To be fair I wasn't pointing fingers at Obama (Nowhere in my post specifically about the stimulus proposal even mentions Obama). I was criticizing the efficacy of the stimulus strategy in general. This strategy has already been used in the past and has a history of failure. There is, of course, a very clear reason for this. I was trying to explain WHY stimulus packages do not work in my post.

I don't know why you brought up Bush in regards to why stimulus packages do not work. He isn't relevant in this. There are many criticisms that hold for him and his administration but none of them can be applied to this subject as I presently know...

I really don't know why you even brought him up.
