Today we read in class. We want to be up to chapter 7 by Thursday where you will respond to questions taken from each chapter in A-205. We will write essay 3 in class on Thursday, October 1 from SPHE. Do the templates and bring your books to class.

1. Post your summaries of Chapter 3 here. Also include your analysis of key arguments and points. What do we know about Tupac now? Is he your average adolescent from a dysfunctional home? How is he different? What saves him from a typical fate?

2. Talk about Dyson's language. List names of people referenced you never heard of whom you had to look up. List the names of people referenced you knew like James Baldwin, perhaps Sonia Sanchez, Minister Louis Farakhan, George Orwell, Quincy Jones. How does Dyson's reference to literary, political and other persons of fame, help prove his point or give him credibility? How does it further his thesis?

3. What is his thesis? Reference the second part of the preface.

In Chapter 3, "No Malcolm X in My History Text" Dyson discussed where Tupac got his education from. Tupac did not finish school, yet he was such an intelligent young man. He read many books on different subjects, and studied things he was interested in. He also got alot of knowledge from the street, and his mother. Tupac felt that in school, we should be taught lifestyles to help us with our current situations. One interesting thing was also that Tupac said one day his work would be studied, and he was right, because here we are today studying it. Tupac was not the average adoloscents from a dysfunctional home, because many of those children get lost in the way of the world. However, Tupac saw the order of things, and he focused himself on changing what he felt was wrong. He was saved from typical fate, because of his reading and the way he interpret the world. One of the people I had to look up Khalil Girban, who I found out was a artist, poet and a writer from Lebanon. He came to the United States, where he began to study art. Dyson's reference to all these different people only confirms the fact that Tupac was a smart young man, and he was eager to learn. Tupac was always ready to learn something new, and help elevate himself and others from the suffering of poverty.

Tupuc was a man who loved to get an education. One reason I believe he reached for higher heights was because of the childhood he had. He had to learn everything the hard way. His mom gave him a home, but didn't seem to care what he did. She was dealing with her issues through his childhood. That is the point in your life when everything is supposed to fall in place.

Tupuc moved a total of twenty times by the time he was a junior in high school. When he lived in Baltimore he realized how bad the conditions were.

In conclusion, Tupuc was always willing to learn something new. I believe he was very talented. I wish he was still with us and he was a type of artist that likes changing the world for the better.

In chapter three of Holler if You Hear Me Dyson describe Tupac’s passion for literature and how he believed the current school system needed to change. Tupac did not finish school, yet this did not mean he was a stupid man. Tupac was a natural at performing and he was able to remember sonnets and repeat them entirely. He loved to read and it was because of this passion he knew so much about the world. Dyson even says that because of his wide spread knowledge through the books he read Tupac was able to develop his raps and lyrics to a new level. Most people put in Tupac‘s situation would not have been able to thrive as he did, but he knew that he could amount to more than what anyone expected out of him. Tupac thought that our current education was not properly preparing the young people of today and that we needed to teach them ideas to get them through this tuff society. He became very active in getting young people to read. He was able to do this through rapping and with the help of Leila Steinberg. He was able to reach out to more people than just young kids he also influenced his fellow rappers to care about reading. Tupac was able to show people that you can be literate but still have a passion for rap. There were many names that were not familiar to me, But one that interested me was Sonia Sanchez. She is a poet who has written many books of poetry. I read a little bit about her life and found it interesting. I did know who Maya Angelo was along with a few others. The literature Tupac read made him able to know all aspects of the world. I believe Tupac’s thesis is, “These kids need to know that this was somebody who loved poetry before he discovered rap. And there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe a little bit will rub off on some of these kids running around wanting to be gangsters” (Dyson 101).

One of the main themes of Michael Eric Dyson's Holler If You Hear Me is that part of Tupac Shakur's withstanding influence has to do with the young rapper's intense interest in learning. In Chapter 3, "No Malcolm X in My History Text," Dyson explores Tupac's voracious appetite for different music, art, and literature, as well as his relationship with friend and mentor Leila Steinberg. Though Tupac never finished high school due to the difficulties he faced at home, he was extremely knowledgeable on a wide range of topics and is remembered by many who met him as an extremely bright young man.

Chapter 3 -- Summary

In chapter 3 of Holler if You Hear Me, Dyson describes Tupac’s passion for learning and self-education. However, there were obstacles keeping Tupac from achieving some of these goals, such as finishing high school. Tupac was not able to finish high school because of his mother’s addiction; it has affected his academics to not go far. But on the other hand, the rapper was always interested in learning and especially, reading. In this chapter, we learned more about his challenges and how his life is the way it is. Tupac self-educates himself and read more to discover other parts of the world, and that shows that he cares a lot about his surroundings and what is going on around him. At this point, we know that he is not an average adolescent from a dysfunctional home because he set his goals differently; he had a love for education and that is believed to make him look at the world logically. The main point of this chapter is that education does not have a limit; anyone can be intelligent despite a dysfunctional family. In addition, Dyson also mentioned W.L. Wilmshurst who was the author of The Meaning of Masonry. This extends his main point because it is a part of what Tupac has learned; his mind was full of discoveries, and he would study these things. We have a sense of what is going on inside Tupac's curious mind; this also shows what is important to him, and what he thinks is important for other teenagers to learn about.

In Chapter 3 Tupac's childhood and teenage life in revealed. Based on the revealing, Tupac did not live a normal life. He had to move around a lot, watch his mother with her addiction, and much more. He had to suffer from a whole lot during his childhood. He lived a poor life with no father, while on welfare at the same time.
I still am a bit shocked how a young boy that went through so much was able to become the man he is today. He had to make many self decisions which clearly led him to where he is today and that's what he always wanted. He always wanted to live a life that he never could have and now he could do so.

Scientific American Mind
How science can help you fall in love and stay that way
by: Robert Epstein.
Who would have thought falling in love was science. In this article by Robert Epstein, he writes about the different studies scientist have experimented on couples to help them fall in love. Epstein provides love-buliding exercises and explains what they are and what effects they have on couples love lifes.
According the the research by Esptein, about half of marriages fail in the u.s., as do two thirds of second marriages and three quarters of third marriages. A study of arranged marriages in which love has grown overtime hints that commitment, communication, accomondation and vulnerability are key components of a successful relationship.
Scientist also discribe what effects typical fairy tales have on American minds. Scientist also travel all the way around the world to India to show how arranged marriages are more likely to stay together then any other marriage.
In India studies show that arranged marriages start out low and gradully increased, surpassing the love in the marriage the love is nearly twice as strong. In this article by Esptein he interviews a couple in India who have been happily married for over 11 years and have two bright, well adjusted children.
So much for fairy tales.
