Second week of classes, first full week
Today in class we continued working through the exercises in Stewart Pidd Hates English.
We reviewed the Wordy to Concise, and then continued with the Free Paraphrase. The goal is to finish this section by Monday, Feb. 1.
Homework this evening is to summarize your article. The length of your response depends on how long your article is. If it is a three page article then the response should be minimally a three paragraph essay. If it is shorter, then one paragraph might suffice.
No pressure, this is a rehearsal (smile).
Field trip
I will hand out fliers for our first field trip in the morning: Tim Wise at www.speakout.com The lecture is Thursday, Feb. 4, 7 PM at the First Congregational Church of Oakland on 27th and Harrison in Oakland. The cost is $10. Let me know Monday, Feb.1 if you'd like to attend. Bring your money as well. I have to purchase tickets in advance. You can invite guests.
L-202E
Beginning tomorrow, we will meet in L-202E. I will walk students over. If you are late, this is where we will be for the rest of the semester.
Library Orientation
On Wednesday, January 17, 8 and 9 AM we will meet at the reference desk for a 50 minute library orientation with Professor Steve Gerstle.
Future plans
Next week we will continue paraphrasing and work on summarizing texts, and writing an essay where we use summary and paraphrase. Are any of you planning to watch the State of the Union Address? Heads-up...we will be reading it (smile).
Students are stressing over grades already. I will post the syllabus soon, so you can figure out how to get an A. We will run the SPHE at the same time we are reading Half the Sky and other selections. About half of the SPHE essays will be written in class on Thursdays. I am serious about the "review." We will be whizzing through the book, so keep up. We will do the essays and exercises chronologically.
Nothing disappears on the blog. Everything is archived, so when the post disappears, it is just archived and you can find it if you go to the month and year in the index located on the page here.
