Today students presented their concepts on love. Post a self-reflection here on the process and comment on the other presentations, especially those which moved you. The assignment is due by Tuesday, March 2. Post where the assignment is posted below.

Homework is to keep moving forward in Pidd. Essay 2 is due next Wednesday. The templates for Essay 2 need to be completed for Monday, we will share.

If students want to see a lovely play which is a love story, Come Home at La Pena Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue, in Berkeley, is the play. It is being presented for one night only, Friday, February 26, 2010 8 PM. Visit www.lapena.org

Don't forget to pick up your essays in front of L-235. Essay 1 revisions should be coming back. Pay attention to details. Pidd is about following instructions and paying attention to details. We are creating a body of work on-line and in Pidd learning how to be editors, so that at the end of the eighth essay students will be able to revise their own essays.

I believe in self-reflection. I think we do better in all our tasks when we plan, and then reflect on outcomes before preceding. This is the space where growth takes place.

Oh, at Glide Memoral Church there is a poetry reading for Haiti on Sunday. I think it starts at 2 PM. Glide is in San Francisco, and the event is free, but donations are accepted. I am going to the poetry reading and maybe to see Come Home, unless someone invites me to the Fox to see Brian McKnight and Lalah Hatthaway (smile).

Personally, I liked everyones presentation. I could tell that everyone put alot of time and thought into what they were going to share with the class. I liked the guy who spoke about how we all recieve material things to show love but those things will never stay with us how our own love will.

Reflection on Presentations

Today I did my presentation on my dog Cookie. I brought in her picture to show the class. I brought her picture because i love my dog very much and have many attachment issues to her. She has very bad breast cancer and does not have to long to live. She has begun getting so sick that now i can only feed her by hand. It breaks my heart.

A presentation that i really liked was Phil Redd presentation because he presented about his dog Popeye. this presentation was special to me because it was a dog, and i know the love that someone can feel for their pet. His dog was a german Shepard , but not nearly as old as my dog.

Love Reflection

The presentation that I really liked was Jeff's presentation on his love for America. I liked his story about how he was in the marine corps for, I think thirteen years and how he was sent to Iraq twice during his training. He found this love for America working for the United States and protecting his nation. He also showed that this kind of love was the love of agape; an unconditional love that is very reliable and won't go away like a bad relationship. All the other presentation were also very good, but this is the one that stood out the most to me.

Response to Presentation

All the presentations i think came from the heart. All of them showed some type of love, but the one that really caught my attention was Jeff's and Juan Li. Both showed so much truthfullness and so much time spend on trying to explain what they think about love to the classroom.
Jeff explained his love for his country, and i think this was similar to mine. The love for his country is what brings him to appriciate people every day. It shows courage especially because he use to be a soldier. That shows a lot of pride and love for his country and for what he personally believes in.

Juan Li's perpective on love showed something far more deep and delicate than anytyhing I've ever heard. Although she has an accent, i think it was pretty clear to people that love is love.

Overall all of the presentations were really well done. Every one was very clear and very honest about what they thought about love. Also it was a fun assigment that many people can agree on.

Presentation Response
I really enjoyed James' presentation particularly because he brought the Bible to represent love. He also sang a song which I really enjoyed. I too believe the greatest love is that of God because it's selfless, unconditional, and spiritual. It's something you can't see. It's a feeling that is so strong that sometimes it's unexplainable. It is a love that's everlasting.

Love Presentation Reflection

I think my classmates did very well duriing their presentations. The presentations that stook out to me the most were James and Julian’s. I thought James did a wonderful job and brought the object that I feel represents love the most. Julian’s I felt was very significant, I’m not a fan of tattoos but im glad that he chose something so meaningful as a tattoo. I really enjoyed everybodys presentions and cant wait to present on Monday.

Response to the presentations:

Overall, I enjoyed everyone's presentations. There are many different kinds of love that different people cherish most. Some believe that friendship love is most important, others believe that love for family is most important, and others believe that love of God is most important. One student brought in her necklace that her boyfriend gave her for their anniversary. For me, the love for your partner is the most important kind of love.

I really enjoyed the presentations, I have not really talked to anyone in the class in any depth about their life. So I thought that this gave me a nice comfortable look into my classmates lives. My presentation was on my tattoo and I thought it went well, I could have talked slower, I felt like I rushed it a little bit. But over all I thought every body did a pretty good job. I also liked how people really spent some time thinking about what they were going to present. I look forward to the rest of the class presenting.

I didn't really have a favorite one, but I felt that Julian's was pretty cool because I have been wanting to get my first tattoo and I have no idea what I would want to get. But more or less, I thought that the presentations went well and it was nice to hear everyone's story.

Presentation Reflection

Many of the presentations I saw were memorably. To choose a couple in particular, I liked Kyle’s and James. Kyle brought in a necklace with a wooden cross attached to it. He said it was given to him his senior year as a form of bondage between him and his graduating classmates. He knew that he might not be able to keep in touch with everyone, so this would be a way to resemble them keeping close together. This love would be considered philia, a love shared between friends. I also enjoyed James presentation. James chose to bring in a bible. He emphasized his favorite love, agape. Agape expresses love to everyone, whether you like them or not. Agape is a religious type of love, following god’s words to love all of his children, regardless of the circumstances. I feel it is the most unconditional love, very concrete and everlasting. He also sang us a gospel song to get a better understanding of how he felt towards his love of religion. He had a beautiful voice! Overall, I enjoyed all of the presentations very much. It just goes to show you that many interpret love differently, and what types of love are more important to them than others.

In today’s class the first 10-or-so people presented their objects that represented love to them. We started off very strong with James singing a hym from the bible expressing love and Jesus’ sacrifice. He sang wonderfully and definitely relayed to message he wanted. Other notable presentations were the tattoo of Nephertiti and the heart pendant. Only in today’s society would someone love a website because technology is so prevelant and necessary, which was the case with with the Wikipedia site. I struggled to find my one object because its hard enough to find anything that represents agape let alone an object that can be brought to class. Every presentation was entertaining and at the same time informational as well as inspiring. I think each student did a good job on their presentation and put in quality time and thought into their idea. I liked Chris’s camera because I to have a nikon camera and I find art in the form of photos quite creative and “fresh.” I will present my object at the beginning of next week and hope that I am successful at expressing my form of love to the class.

Love Presentation Response
Out of all the love presentations I was able see I enjoyed Kyle Williams. I am probably bias for liking his representation of love because I was a student of his 2009 Saint Joseph Notre Dame class. I appreciated Kyle’s presentation the most because I could relate to everything he was saying. He said,” The kairos cross represents the bond between our class as we all go our separate ways after senior year.“ I not only completely agree with this statement but also have more thoughts to add onto this statement. Kairos in Greek means God’s time; On our we acknowledged the meaning of Kairos and took the time to reflect on the unconditional love between God and ourselves. The reason why this cross represents such a strong bondage of love between our class is because during the retreat several student shared heartfelt stories. The students’ stories were all different but all had one similarity, in their moment of complete despair someone was there for them. For every student that shared on Kairos it was a different person. For example, one student’s support may have been God while another student’s support was a friend. After every story was read, friends, listeners, and previous story tellers walked up to the podium and stood in line to hug the story teller one by one. The people in line to give hugs represent support, friendship, and philia. The kairos, I believe, also represents agape love. Agape love is an unconditional love. The kairos cross also shows agape love to me because on the retreat I had felt that everyone as well as myself believed that God had to have an agape type of love in order to support the readers in overcoming their obstacles.

Love Presentation Response

It was really interesting viewing all the different aspects of and feeling on Love. Love is a very important form of expression in your feelings for a person. There are three main types of love, Eros, Philia, and Agape. Each with their own specific meaning and symbols. I chose to present my Kairos retreat cross that I received which symbolized a type of philia love, a love that is associated with other people.
I enjoyed the presentations in class, they gave me a chance to see how some of my classmates viewed the love of their objects, that they presented. Everyone views love in different ways.

I wish I’d had time to archive some of my files on my tape recorder, oh well next time. Then I could have documented the wonderful presentations. I am happy I was present this morning to receive the gifts. I wasn’t aware that I needed this healing until the second class’s presentations then the fact of my cousin’s death hit me and my boyfriend’s diagnosis with high blood pressure and clogged arteries and pending exploratory surgery hit me—I just found these two things out yesterday afternoon and this morning before work and haven’t had time to process this means…. Cousin Laura’s mother, Cousin Mary, now 90 years old, says death is a part of life.

Last week Dominique (my TA) and I went to the King Tut exhibit and the Egyptians definitely believed that death and life was a journey one needed provisions for, like slaves to do one’s work, food to eat well and transportation to get around in the underworld and of course companionship.

The posted reflections are/will be great to read, but they won’t necessarily do justice to what we witnessed today, like James singing the gospel song, “Pass Me Not,” or Julian’s tattoo of Nefertiti, King Tut’s step-mom(?).

I loved (pun intended) Taiisha’s keys, her boyfriend told her they were the keys to his heart, but she likened them to the many keys one uses to enter the various chambers that is love—agape the highest and most remote of all the expressions.

Veronica’s chunk of amethyst agate or crystal, a block of ice which is as much a part of her landscape as her bed and familial warmth—reliable and dependable and sturdy like true love: agape she said.
Back to Julian and Nefertiti—whom he said represented his grandmother and all the women in his family—goddesses who like the Queen of the Nile, keep the empire, his family together when they would wander. He got this tattoo when he reached 18, legally an adult.

Many students like Sammie spoke of their mother’s love, the sapphire—her birth stone, representative of love’s endurance.

Love is not seasonal. Jon stated. He said that if one waits for February to think about love and waits for presents which society has deemed representative of love, then one will wait in vain. Jon stated that love for oneself is most important, and that intentional communities and relationships are often the ones that count the most, so he shared arm warmers his girl knit for him—the analogy that love keeps one’s heart warm and safe from the coldness one often encounters in the world.

Juan Li’s mirror ended a lovely reflection on the concept, love. In the final analysis she said we see love in the faces of those we encounter –we are mirrors for each other, and even if the face we reflect is not as loving as one would like, our reflection is the potential change waiting to happen on the other side. Love creates love.

Victor shared a passage from an article he read by Robert Johnson, “Understanding the Psychology of Romantic Love.” In his reflection prior to reading he talked about agape as the place we are trying to get to as human beings as we move from eros to the deeper less superficial, if fun (smile), philia, then on to the unconditional love. “Love gives one a feeling of wholeness…it lifts us higher” (Johnson). He spoke about the tangible love eros conjures: hugs and kisses, intimacy.

Chris shared his DSLR camera, which represents his love of art. His love is visual and we can see his love manifest at his website: christhekid.tumbler.com

Lucia shared a ring, the second ring she got, the first from her aunt who received it from her late mother. The ring from her mother broke and the jeweler lost it and so her aunt gave her another ring. Kyle shared a cross he got when he completed high school. A worn simple symbol of the fraternity her shared with his classmates—the lessons he carries forward into adulthood.

These objects or symbols: rings: the unbroken circle of light, the cross: struggle and endurance… gave those who possessed them something tangible to hold onto when the idea was a bit too lofty and one was missing one’s mother or child or friends or significant other.

Gerren shared his love of information, that is, Wikipedia with us. He likes the idea that someone has posted what appears to be credible information on-line that others can access—He said a recent journey to the website gave him information about James Dean, “Rebel without a Cause. “He said he would have stated his love for his mother as primary, but she’s in Florida and he didn’t know he could share a photograph.
Phill’s reflection on his dog and pets in general as ambassadors of love, was so right on. I totally agree with him that pets love us unconditionally, even when we aren’t nice, even when they are hungry or suffering, as Emmily, whose dog has cancer. I remember my cat Smokey, who had a painful tumor and couldn’t keep food down and she went off alone under the house and died quietly one afternoon. We left the back door open so she could get a breath of fresh air whenever she wanted to. She sends us emissaries often –cats just drop by our house to say hi. I totally believe in the afterlife and reincarnation and spirit now that Smokey has transitioned. My dad didn’t come back, or at least I haven’t recognized him, but I see Smokey often. I even hear her see her spirit walking in the house out of the corner of my eye and like I said, her emissaries visit us often.

Jeff’s love for his country, that he made two tours out of high school and was willing to give his life for us, is perhaps the greatest manifestation of unconditional love—agape. Again like Juan Li said so eloquently, love is an exchange. Jeff was willing to exchange his life for our democracy, our freedom. Thanks Jeff for your gift.

Jesus says in the bible to love one’s enemy, but can one really do this? I wonder how one can face the murderer of one’s loved one, but many do and forgive them.
Juan Li said that love doesn’t always feel good, that sometimes one feel bad or sad and after the tears one feels better. “Love is an exchange,” she said. “It says, when you look into the face of another (the mirror) ‘Are you ready for today?’”

Crystal said her family represented love, as did Arley who said she has 100 cousins and her grandmother had 90 grandchildren. “Family is dependable, you can rely on them, ” she said. Josh also spoke of family and Victor (8-8:50 AM class) shard a teddy bear his mother got him when his daughter, now one and a half, was born.

I like Valeria’s statement that love is impacted or shaped by one’s experiences. She’s from Columbia and came to the United States as a refugee. Love probably means safety and life and opportunity to have peace, but then love could also involve worry if all one’s family is not present. Love for a person in exile could mean longing for one’s homeland, which one also loves, but can’t return to—love is complicated.

Cristian, from Argentina, said that there were no images, unless it was of his mother who represented love, because love true love is represented by Jesus Christ. Christ he said modeled love—a life we need to try our best to get close to. Love isn’t something one can touch, James stated, because love is faith.

Love Presentation Response

We had a presentation in this morning. There were more than ten students who voluntariled to speak. I think this response already proved that love is an attract topic for most people and it include me. I talked about the view in which I looked at love is love has so many aspects. Among these aspects what love have, I emphasize that love needs to exchange.
I enjoied my classmate's presentation too. Each person explained a view of how they looked at love. For example, Jeff refered love begin with he loves his country. I would like to agree with his idea. Country for people is like their home. People share their culture, their language, and their belief in their countries. Although, people from any country can find that what was bad about their countries, when people loss the connetion between their countries and their daliy lives, they would find actually their countries is their home.

Preparation & Reflection on Love Presentations:
This morning I had to present and to prepare for this presentation of love. It was not as easy as I would have thought. I presented about my family and how I love them. I had so much to say but not everything that I wanted to say came out. I not the best public speaker but if I was I think my presentation would have been a lot better. I really enjoyed what others had to say about love. I agreed with what John and Juan had to say, the example of how Juan loved many things and in order to love anyone or anything you have to love yourself. You have to look at a mirror and see yourself and love yourself before anything you do at the start of everyday of your life no matter where you are. What John mentioned about how people are shallow and just want gifts like roses or teddy bear to show love. But I feel that love is not about material, what the person gets you but how they are how they treat you showing love in a priceless way, not just one day of the year (Valentine’s Day) but every day. I enjoyed everyone’s representation of love, and what they love or who they love, and why.

I really enjoyed my friends’ thoughts on love today. It was very interesting to hear all different views from them. Love has many forms. In this assignment we are trying pick between Eros, Philia and Agape type of love. I pick Agape type of love because it is associated with unconditional love. Love is positive and very beautiful emotion, but in many cases love is only there if it is mutual. Agape love is there for u unconditionally and it doesn’t have any expectations. It is selfless love which is the most beautiful and deep love type for me.

Juan li She loves all things in life. For example the trees the people. Love can be sad or bad. It has changed. I liked what she had to say because there are many things in life that we can love. It does not have to be a specific person. It is true that love can be something that is sad or bad. It is just what happens in life.
Phil loves his animal and feels that they are better to love. I agree with Phil because animals are easier. Pets usually stick by ones side no matter what, There are peoples companions.
Crystal picture of her family because she loves them. I did the same exact thing as Crystal because I too love my family. They are the most important people to me. This is a special type of love. It was a nice picture of her family.
Josh that love will always be there. Josh is right there will always be some type of love. There is love for a family, friend or even a boyfriend/husband. Different people love different things.
Victor brought a bear that his mom gave him. Represents when his baby was born and he loves her. I have yet to feel that type of love because I have no children. I do love my little cousins and some I love as if they were my own kids.
Emmily brought a pic of her dog. Her dog has cancer and she got her when she was a few months old. Her dog is now thirteen. This I can relate to because I love my dog Chata. She is so cute and is always by me when I am sad or something.
Valeria love depends from where u r. Colombia is different not as safe or organized. I think that she is right because people do love differently. My family is from Mexico and many people say that the way our family loves each other is weird. Some people think that we have something going on with a cousin just because of how loving we are with each other.
Jon it is good to love others. To love yourself. I think that it is important to love oneself. I think that in order to love others we have to love ourselves. This helps us shape ourselves.
I think all the presentations were really good and it was a good idea to have them. It helped us get to know each other a little better.

Today our class did presentations on “love.” My favorite of the presentations was Jeff’s presentation on his love for America. This was an interesting thing to love because I didn’t even think of that as a form of love, but I believe it’s very real and important to love you country. The best thing I like about this class is that I am able to hear and see views that I wouldn’t normally think of. This was interesting how he felt his love and allegiance applied and also that he had devoted a portion of his life to fight for his country. It appears that is a very powerful form of love.

Presentation response
im using the library because i have issues on my computer.

Today in class, i learned a lot of things from people's presentation. I analyzed how others define the word love. One that amazes me is about David's and sadeea's presentations about love. It showed that love guided their life throughout their struggles. Every presentations were great. It showed a little piece about themselves.

Love Presentation Response

Today in class, we finished up the last of the love presentions. I took in a picture of my family, me, my mom, my sister and my brother. Family comes first, they mean the world to me. We have this distinct bond we share that when we fight or agrue, we can never stop loving each other. They're there for me always no matter how good or bad. When things get tough and everything else fails, my family is there. Without their support and love, I don't know what I would do. I'm so thankful for my family.

Although I liked everyones presentations, there is one that stood out to me. In response to Victor. I liked his presentation because he had brought in to share a teddy bear that his mom gave him when his daughter was born. His presentation particularly moved me because I felt how much he loves his little girl, you could just see it. This love is very strong and unconditional.

Response to presentation

I am very touching by Sideeq’s presentation this morning. He started with a story before he brought out his release letter (release for freedom). He has a very lovely and supportive wife. However, the wonderful parts are he knows how treasure the love he received and he knows how to show his appreciation of others’ giving.

Brittany sat next to me this morning. She was holding a giant children story book and she told me she was not ready for the presentation. When Prof. Wanda came by, she showed us the giant children story book and a very lovely poster with some little pictures and artworks on it. She said she got it as her birthday present from her cousin. The poster is very sweet and warm. I can feel the love from the pictures and artworks on the poster. I like her poster.

Love Presentation Response:

My favorite love presentation(s) would have to be today's presentations which consisted of Summera's and the one about loving everyone. They did not just love thing or one person, they loved life and god in general. And they really expressed it in their presentations.

Overall the presentations went very well and it seemed as if individuals put time and effort into finding a representation of "love". I really don't have a favorite one but I enjoyed every single presentation long or short.

One particular presentation really caught my attention. The idea presented was the importance of the relationship between happiness and love. I thought this was a simple, yet powerful idea- Love is a requirement to achieving happiness. It's a fact that one cannot argue with. But is this love the act of giving love and loving others or is it love as in receiving love from others.
In fact I was overwhelmed by this question, a question which seemed so simple yet so profound. Surely a person cannot be happy simply being loved by others. One-sided love never leads to happiness. Even simple romantic relationships suggests this idea once and once again. (Being rejected hardly induces happiness). This love which leads to happiness must be both the giving of love and the receiving of love as well. One cannot be happy by only giving or only receiving love. So then the secret to achieving happiness is simply to love one another.

This week some students who hadn't presented last week gave their presentations. I hadn't realized so many students were absent last week. I was glad we continued this week as well.

David shared his tattoos on both shoulders one as a reminder of how important family is, his siblings, the other a permanent reminder of who he doesn't want to be. I found it interesting that despite the fact that his siblings were raised away from him, they were close. A lot of time when one thinks about the term "baby mama," or the practice of "dropping seeds" one doesn't heard the voices of such offspring, what happens to the children or such absent parents. David's presentation was an answer: many survive and create extended new families where several women take responsibility for the children. In David's case he says he was raised by his mother and grandmother.

When Jennie started unpacking her boxes, each one nestled inside the other, I didn't know what to expect, certainly not the set of wings for American President's Shipping Line or the ring which marked her 20-plus years of service.

Corrine shared her camera, and spoke about how her family loves to capture moments in each other's lives. Peter shared a cross he received when he finished elementary school, I think the same school Kyle went to.

There were other presentations, but these stayed with me, so many days later.

I also liked another student's birthday book her best friend made for her on her 20th birthday. It is so sweet and shows how much she is loved. The detailed sayings are what surprised her most.

Oh, Ahu's reflection on her mother and Moktar's discourse on love and Sunjung's photo of herself and her mother were so sweet as well. I also really liked one student's necklace with the Kaa'ba on it. It seems that in a lot of families, certain milestones are marked with a tangible object like a ring in Lucia's case, a tattoo or a cross.

Is this connection or need for tangible objects tied to the fact that we are flesh and blood not spirit beings yet?

Perhaps I'll share more later. I have to run now.

Presentation Reflection

Everyones presentation on love was good. I really didn't have a favorite because everyone did a good job. But its interesting how there is different kinds of love. Lust, admiration, true love. You can love your friends, neigbors, family boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse and pets. To me love is not selfish love is kind and at times it is blind true love hurts and sometimes can be dispointing, but if it is true love in the end it will conqure all and beyond.
