In 1971 Mimi Silbert founded Delancey Street with four residents, a thousand dollar loan and a dream. She envisioned a place where substance abusers, former felons and others who had hit bottom would, through their own efforts, be able to turn their lives around.
Silbert has since built an empire grossing 20 million dollars a year with locations in New York, New Mexico, North Carolina and Los Angeles. She has never accepted a single penny of government funds.
Since those early days in a single house, Mimi Silbert has empowered more than 14,000 people to lead crime-free, drug-free lives in mainstream society. They have acquired skills, they attend college and they are part of the workforce.
Silbert says she has spent her career cultivating a "university of the streets." She calls it a "Harvard for losers," where the students are former pimps, prostitutes, junkies, drug dealers and armed robbers.
Her program's name comes from Silbert's own past. Delancey Street is a place on Manhattan's lower east side where immigrants like her parents came to make a new life for themselves (http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/silbert.html).

I personally know a few of the men that reside at Delancey Street. When I was released from prison in June I paroled to a program on Treasure Island in San Francisco called Walden House. We used to have functions like baseball games, dances, bake sales, etc. Along with Walden House, other programs in the San Francisco area including Delancey Street would partake in these functions.

I didn't particularly like the program I was in because the only thing consistent about it was the inconsistency. I felt like I was still in prison and the rules (which were just ridiculous) did nothing but make me angry. I didn't feel like I was getting anything positive out of it.
Watching the video today about Delancey Street is what I think a program should be like. Silbert's establishment gets straight to the point of the program. They put people to work and provide many benefits including getting a diploma or GED. Silbert is smart about how Delancey Street is set up also. Where other programs are funded by the government and have the potential to shut down without warning due to budget cuts, Delancey Street owns a number of different means of bringing in funds. The men that I know from there tell me that when you first get there, they break you down by putting you in lockdown for 30 days without any outside contact from family or friends. Despite that 30 day torture, they say it's well worth it only if you're willing to change for yourself.

I think Mimi Silbert is doing a wonderful thing with her program. I believe everyone deserves a second chance and she is giving the men that chance. She talked about a problem of the guys not knowing anything else in their life and not having the chance to experience something beyond themselves. She addresses the problem by giving the ex convicts a place to work and do good for other people by helping them move and cooking in a restaurant. Delancey Street targets troubled people who have been or are currently in prison. The results are building character and making the men feel better about themselves. They can only do this through helping others. I think using Delancey Street would be a great idea. The company should always keep going and that can only happen by giving them business. I am definitely interested in going to the restaurant. It is very surprising that a woman like her took it upon herself to turn these people’s lives around without knowing them personally at the beginning. She is very brave and is definitely changing lives.

I really enjoyed learning about Mimi, she is very opportunistic in understanding what was lacking in the judicial system, supplying ex-cons with work history. Mimi knew that for these ex-offenders that getting a job would be difficult; most of them never even had a job before. I would defiantly advocate people to use Delancey services, myself included. The work Mimi is doing is greatly appreciated by all especially those that are enrolled in her program.

After watching the New Heroes episode today in class I had many emotions going through my head at a time. I was shocked that people like Mimi Silbert, that want to help those in need still exist. I think that her program is absolutely amazing and it’s quite admirable. Former felons and addicts who wanted to renovate their lives lacked the resources and support which was the problem that Silbert was able to indentify. Silbert addressed the problem by making a program that will help those who fell under that category get back on their feet. Greatfully her program has been a huge success, even though she never received a penny from government help. I personally would be more than happy to use the Delancey Street services, and is actually planning to do so in the near future.

Response to New Heroes – Mimi Silbert
The problems that Mimi Silbert identifies are people in need. People that want to start their lives over and make a change, but just don’t know how. Silbert addresses this problem by helping these people get jobs. She’s helping them get back on their feet.
She has gotten by her constituents by building her own business to help support her program. The population that Delancey street targets: former pimps, prostitutes, junkies, drug dealers and armed robbers. The measurable results are that this program has helped over 14,000 people. Personal I think I would use Delancey street services because everyone has done something that they regret in their lives and people shouldn’t have to be punished by not being able to make a living.

Normally, we just think and worry for the poor, so we forget felons and others who are being at the bottom of the society. Even through they really want to return to the mainstream of the society, they had lack of society’s care. However, the purpose of Silbert’s program is to help these people, and Silbert is an admirable women. Silbert helped more than 14,000 people who are pimps, prostitutes, junkies; drug dealers and armed robbers live in the mainstream society attend college and attain work skills.

Today, I watch DVD about hero of Mimi Silbert. She is brave and powerful women. There is location, San Francisco, Calif. U.S.A Her program's name comes from Silbert's own past. She is a housing education center where criminals learn to lead productive, crime-free lives. They earn revenue by operating more than 20 businesses, including the Delancey Street Restaurant and Café and Moving Company. These "training schools" not only make income, they teach residents saleable skills and inculcate in them habits. They need to line up a occupation and a place to live. Silbert likes to see each of her students graduate with three marketable skills to ensure their career success. She support their survival depended on the industry. She support jail’s people and they found new life. She had positive sprite and good energy. Silbert is facing new challenges. I remembered about her laugh. I admire Silbert’s positive view.

The flawed judicial system has not given felons the adequate opportunities to transition back in to society. If you are a felon no one will hire you because of your record. The only available jobs are those with no career path and I think that needs to be changed. Mimi Selbert has developed a system in which felons have the resources to create a career path through her program. This program should be an example as a way to improve social living standards. We need more programs that focus strictly on creating career paths for felons.

I believe mimi's program was excellent and that she has a brave soul. It startles me how she handles this program with pride and does not worry about receiving money from the government. She understood the feelings the ex-convicts have and do go thru when getting out of jail. The way the system is set up, it is hard for ex-convicts to get a job. Many people do not understand and Mimi has brought hope to these convicts all over.

Mimi silbert is a women who gives criminal a second chance at life and a job.In this film, it seems like mimi women really enjoy making food. She also seems to be extremely proud of the custumer worker interaction. This women is doing a great deed to people who have hard times in their lives. For instance, she gave a person a job that came out from prison, he was there for ten years. This is very progressive because alot of jobs would not give them jobs. People come to this Delancy street with an abundance of problems and delancy street help them with that and help them complete the course. This street gives them education, business, and jobs.

They work and live on the Delancey street where they learn how to live in society with out any issues with the law. If I could not find anyplace to go if I were in need of help, I would definatly contact the Delancey Street for guidance.
