Revision Strategies video.
Reflect on the revision process and video. What does it mean to revise? Where does revision fit into the overall writing process? What did Norm mean when he mentioned "skilled and unskilled writers"? What did Sandra Perl mean when she spoke about "editing prematurely"?
What assumptions did Dr. Flowers mention that writers have about "good writing"? What does planning have to do with any of this? What is "perfect draft syndrome"? How is revision a way to transform the writing? What is writer-based, read-based writing?
What are the steps to revision? How are these steps confirmed by Diana Hacker in her various grammar style books in the section on revision? If you don't have Hacker, use the grammar style book you have to respond to the question.
How is keeping the reader in mind an important part of the writing process? What analogy does one of the character's use to describe the actual document?

To revise a paper means to improve your writing, see it again and turn into something that your audience understands and like. When you write a paper, you get your ideas out, then you revise and transform it to the reader. Most writers think that a good writing is when you sit down, and start writing perfectly from the first paragraph until the end, but this doesn't exist. To get a good writing you have to put your ideas on the paper, and then organize it, making your subject clear and checking if you said the most important thing you had to say, trying to inform, entertein or persuade your audience.

To revise means to re-write the entire essay, and to think about the audience. Revising fits at the end of the writing process. People often assume that all “good” writers work become perfect the very first time they start their essays. Revising is a process to try to produce perfect sentences. Norm gave four different ways to start the revisions. 1) Look at the overall objective. 2) Look at the paper organization. 3) Look at each paragraph. 4) Look at each individual sentence. Norm also explains to keep the audience in mind so you have their attention.

Revision is the gloss that turns a rough stream-of-consciousness into a polished paper for public consumption. In a rough draft, the content bleeds out of the writer in a sort of manic exorcism: this is called ‘writer-based’ writing. After proofreading, fact-checking and considering your audience, revision strengthens your impulsive arguments and attempts to put them in the best light possible: this is called ‘reader-based’ writing.
‘Perfect Draft Syndrome’ occurs when a writer has the tendency to attempt reader-based writing before writer-based writing. This is done in hopes the writer can simply ‘bang out’ a perfect draft. Most writers can’t do this effectively, and it creates an unnecessarily arduous and frustrating writing process. In the time it takes to overcome the anxiety of Perfect Draft Syndrome, one can have already finished her/his draft and moved on to proofreading.
The steps towards revision, as printed on the sheet, are: Purpose and Audience, Focus, Organization and Paragraphing, Content, and Point of View. The video’s checklist was almost identical. As they say, “great minds think alike.”

Response to Revision Strategies
Revise is an organizational process to not only edit the draft but also to restructure your points and arguments. A good writer uses this process and has made a smart and will articulated paper. Typing a paper then revising it can be a punishment, but it will help you develop a better paper. Often times, writers do edit prematurely to make the sentence structures to near or perfect and forget some ideas along as they type. A writer based prose is a process to type and state your argument but often reflect on the issue for yourself.
Dr. Flowers assumption that typing your first paper is not going to be a perfect one, some writers happen to develop perfect sentences and think that a good sentence will be done and everything is complete and forget it. But importantly a good writer must follow 3 structured points: let the audience understand your topic, what the objective is, and what the important point is.
The ideas and organizations of both Diana Hacker and the revision video are very similar in key points. It is very important that the reader understands your argument and it is the top priority in everyone’s paper that no one should ask questions if they do not understand a point, it is also important to add familiar wording and proper grammer. One of the characters said they used the analogy of the Ugly Duckling Syndrome were you can take an ugly duck as to the essays drafts and make it to a wonderful looking duck as to the final version of paper. I have learned a lot from watching this video and will help me develop a great looking paper in the future to come.

Revision
Revision is a process in writing. It is part of writing just as a license is to driving. By definition, a revision, or the verb to revise is to edit, or to make better. And with writings that requires a certain number of drafts, a revision would be inevitable. Revising a paper is a must. There is no writing that doesnt or havent been revised at one point. Perfection does not exist. To have great writing, one can only hope to revise it enough for it to be decent.

Response to Revision Strategies video
The steps to revision are to first look at the paper, check to see if the paper is in order, and if their are any problems with grammar, and punctuation. Dianna Hacker suggests that the first steps to revising start with the purpose, the audience, and focus of the paper. Then the revision continues with organizing and paragraphing, and ends with the content and the point of view. The writer has the option of revising the paper after putting it away for awhile, or having someone else revise the paper, acting as the audience. This helps improve the paper by keeping the reader in mind. Then the chances of the reader understanding the writer are very high, ant it shows that revising is just as important as the original piece itself.

Response to Revision Strategies video
To revise means to look at the essay again and catch any sentence, or idea that does not make sense and change it. Revision comes after you have words written down in draft form or to surround an idea. When Norm was talking about unskilled writers he pointed out how unskilled writers thought rewriting or revising is a punishment and that writing an essay needs to be right the first time. He also talked about skilled writers and how they are patient with the process of editing and revising their draft. Then Sandra Pearl talks about unskilled writers writing prematurely because of their misconceptions about writing. The assumptions that Dr. Flowers mentioned was that every writer is a good re-writer.
All writers can develop perfect draft syndrome, and it occurs in the writing step of revision and editing. Furthermore the writing step of revision can transform the essay when problems with order and transitions are noticed. Any problem that appears in an essay can either be noticed by the writer or the reader. When the writer notices the problems in an essay, this is known as writer based writing, but when the writer writes to the reader or with the reader in mind, then it is known as reader based writing.

Revision Strategies Video Response
Revising is not the same as editing. Editing is fixing grammatical errors, sentence structures, spelling mistakes, etc. Revising, on the other hand, is a process of looking over the written work again and transforming it into something the audience would understand. Revision is an essential part of the overall writing process; it is not a separate method of writing. “Skilled writers” are those who successfully convey what they are trying to say to their audience through their writing; however, “unskilled writers” cannot. “Editing prematurely” happens when writers expect their papers to come out perfect the first time. They start to write and edit at the same time, short-circuiting the entire revising process. “Good writing” “Perfect draft syndrome” describes writers who try to produce final draft-quality writing the first time they write. Writer-based writing occurs when the writer basically creates a narrative or story of his/her ideas. Read-based writing is where the writer expresses a clear and concise idea in response to the purpose of the paper.

Revision Strategies Video Response
Revising is the act of checking and/or correcting mistakes from the previous drafts in order to make it a better piece of writing, it can be an essay, book etc. Norm said that unskilled writers thought that writing an essay should be perfectly right the first time, which is pretty much impossible since everyone makes mistakes, even small ones count. Skilled writers, on the other hand, are likely to be the patients ones, who spend a good amount of time to look through their writings, make couple of rough drafts for future reference. Mr. Flowers then said that every writer is a good re-writer, which makes sense, because if you are good, you have to learn to edit your work, accept mistakes, learn from them to be a better writer. Perfect draft syndrome can be accomplished by everyone through effort of revising and editing their own work with the help of peers or other people around them. The first steps on revising a paper, are checking if the paper has the right order of information, grammar problems and small things like punctuation. One must also recognize the focus or the main idea of the paper right away, the main topic should be easy to understand so that the audience/readers will not find it boring.
