Presentations

I'm very sorry I had to leave during class early, but from what I saw of Rochelle's presentation she had constructed a very thorough examination of her book. It was really good how she used the example of how an injury can ruin somebody who plays multiple sports, and I think that's something that is easily relatable.

Alice Waters

Chez Panisse

The Romantic
When the restaurant started Alice Waters only served one dish a night

She wanted to pay the most for ingredients while charging the least she could for the food

Collaborative with friends

Originally the restaurant was meant to be a hangout for friends

Influential

Started the slow food movement

Many famous chefs started in her kitchen
Mark Peel
Dan Barber
Judy Rodgers
Gayle Pirie
Suzanne Goin

She is considered the most influential single person in American food

Schools concerned with feeding students healthy food have used her as an example

Ultimately Brilliant
Now fantastically published author
Although she started with no financial experience and struggled for decades, she is now highly successful

Instead of giving up when she discovered how difficult local and organic ingredients were to get, she networked with farmers, artisans, and producers

Today the restaurant staffs over 100 employees including chefs, pastry chefs, and interns

Food Revolution
Buy slow foods
Locally grown
Organic
Sustainable, seasonal food is a right, not a privilege

Rochelle's presentation on Marion Jones from the book: "See How She Runs: Marion Jones & the Making of a Champion," by Ron Rapoport, was both the story of an outstanding athlete, while at the same time the story of a woman who had to battle racism on her way to the top.

It is amazing how slander is okay when one is questioning the skill of an athlete who is breaking previous records--of course she has to be taking drugs to enhance her performance.

What happened to finding evidence before casting suspicion?

Rochelle's outline was so detailed that I wondered if her presentation left anything unsaid for the curious reader who does not like to read a review that tells the end of the story.

Her arguments posed for further thought were also intriging especially the one: Fast is too fast and how one has to watch what one eats because there are natural foods which show up in blood tests as narcotics.

You are such a charismatic person and you communicate so well, it is always fun to listen to what you have to share. What a fun sounding book: The Game. I liked your examples of how you used certain strategies suggested in the book.

Suggestions: Visuals would have helped, although your description of the protagonist is fine.

Giovana

I loved your passion around the themes of the book: Way of the Peaceful Warrior. The protagonist, Dan Millman seems to have illustrated using his life a journey others can use as a vehicle to find their paths.

It seems from your explanation a good book to read for those who are interested in peace and in strategies to get there like meditation.

Abraham

Great presentation! Although your outline tells us nothing about the specifics of Steve Poizner, your talk certainly did. Hint: use the handout to construct your outline and in the future, use specifics when writing an outline starting with the title of the book, which is missing in your outline.

I especially liked your talk best when you deviated from the simple recapping of the book and actually talked about what you learned about Poizner and how wheat one reads is not always factual, that the retelling can be self-serving as it certainly is in Mt. Pleasant. So when is self-serving the same as lying? Is there a difference? That your story ties into the recent election is also fun, and your connecting the two—Poizner’s pitch for the Republican bid for governor and your tying this to your claim that democracy is not a commodity one can buy and sell, was astute.

Marco , you are the guru of outlines. Your outline is so detailed and complete—all your classmates would do well to keep a “Marco original” in their notebooks (smile). You tried to cover too much in such a short time, similar to Rochelle’s presentation. What I would suggest once again is that you rehearse your presentations in advance, if you haven’t and time them, so you know how much you can say in 5/10/15 minutes. For the Social entrepreneur essay you get more time, but for the book report, students were to keep the talks to 5 minutes.

I thought your juxtaposing the two founders of Google really interesting and certainly a plus for the book. It makes me want to read it, and it is also short (smile). Why are you interested in Google? Are you in this field as well?

Great presentation! One could feel your enthusiasm for the topic and ease with the subject. I look forward to reading the essay.

Patrick S.
Great presentation—tight and concise! Do you like the writing in the book? How is the book laid out? Who is the author and what is his relationship to Waters? Have you visited any of the Edible Gardens? How has Waters shaped the local farm and organics movement?

I like Alice Waters and hope we can visit the restaurant as a class for a meal. She is a great lady.

Rochelle- her presentations are always good, she seems ready all the time and she knows what she is going to talk about, talks loud enough for people to hear.

Jake- presentation was pretty interesting, made people laugh with his examples, good sense of humor, sounds like an interesting book. It is obvious that he likes that book that he read based on the examples and the way he explains it.

Giovanna- precise and straight forward presentation, she seems ready and understands the book pretty well.

Abraham- talks loud, which is good, it catches people's attention, great presentation, talked alot about the book, sounded pretty interesting.

Marco- i have seen his outlines, and i must agree with professor sabir, his outlines are great! straight forward, wrote alot of helpful things n it, obvious that he spends alot of time working on it to make it the best.
