Cyber-Assignment

The second class had abstracts, which was wonderful. All the abstracts gave its audience the plan for the presentation and one gave a synopsis of the book. Even if there was no synopsis, within each presentation, the plot became clear. Some students analyzed the plot and themes, others still confused the two and gave a synopsis of the book mixed with analysis.

Presentations were excellent, from skits and power point presentations to creative collages, students showed a visual comprehension of key elements of their texts. I was impressed with the level of detail involved in certain presentations such as Erin, Eman and Cherefah's which included an image of their mapping or invention process. I loved Dereje, Morgan, Andrew and Ashante's attention to the assignment with regard to topical invention: definition, analogy, consequence, and testimony.

The same was true with David's group as well. His use of geese to symbolize the boys, now men, in The Pact, was a wonderful analogy which he continued to refer to as the group acted like a tag team, each member elaborating on an aspect of the book or a theme they highlighted in their research. Thailea's comments on friendship, a further elaboration on David's comments, was powerful and her writing quite remarkable.

I hope students heard her use of parallel structure when she wrote: "the friendship between the boys formed a triangle of hope, trust and motivation."

The collages created by Stacey, Summer, Ellie, and Alex were lovely and provided a creative range reflecting the varied intellectual perspectives of the group members. Some students filled the page, while others left room for the viewer to add his or her own perspectives, arguments or thoughts. I thought Alex's placement of notes on the back of his collage clever and the entire presentation well rehearsed, polished and professional.

I hope the students will bring the posters back and put them on the bulletin board in the classroom (A-232).

Assignment
Post your responses to student presentations here. Talk about what worked well. If you had any questions, here is the place to ask them. Did the students follow their plan? Can you formulate the thesis? What were some of the arguments presented? What evidence did the students use to support their arguments?

If presenters did not give classmates an abstract, post that as well with student names in the group.

If a student was a presenter, write a self-reflection on the process, what you learned and what surprised you most about the planning and the presentation. This forum is not the place to beat oneself up. Only share the positive aspects of the experience and what you learned about yourself and about the group process, and what you plan to do differently, if anything, next time.

Homework
Bring in your completed essays tomorrow for a peer review. Email everything to yourself.

We will end with presentations (1-2). Make sure they are well-rehearsed.

Erin, Eman and Cherefah presented the Kite Runner in the form of a power point. Their overall synapses of the book was fully comprehended and they all complimented each other. The central theme to their theses is: atonement vs. forgiveness. If Amir was a decent friend to Hassan because he felt guilt after his death and brought in Hassan's son; or was it too late to be Hassan's friend because he was already dead? I believe that he was a good friend because Hassan was devoted to him. If Hassan did not like Amir, he would not have been so friendly. Amir's guilt imposing the role of father to his Hassan's son exemplifies how intimate their friendship truly was.

Our group involved eight people all together. We had three white boys, Nel and Sula, a narrator, an introducer, and someone to tie all of the facts together. It could have been messy, but surprisingly, it flowed concisely. We all had different perspectives and different theses, but we persevered and found the common themes in each: Nel brought innocence and playfulness to Sula's harsh reality, and Sula opened Nel's sheltered life to the truths of the world. Both, in the form of dualism, created a balance that was vital to their friendship.

This assignment was engaging and fun. I enjoyed working with my classmates and taking a different approach to learning new insights. A break from writing is nice and can create new inspiration for ideas to discuss in our essays. I felt this assignment allowed me to spice up my thesis because I heard my peers' theses. I liked combining ideas and brainstorming the book.

I loved the geese analogy!!! Not only was it very informative, it was also a very lovely way to give meaning to friendship and support. I was utterly moved. Thailia's (sp) words, as you have quoted, were very creative. They presented a beautiful mental image. I loved the collage idea. It was a very great individualistic expression. I thought that Mourgans group was vey detailed. They left me wanting to read the book. :)

I liked each of the presentations. I wish I'd heard more from David's group, but they did explain what the book was about very well, and I enjoyed the way they connected the video they showed with the theme in their book. I also liked Morgan's (sp?) group's presentation because it was very easy to understand, and straightforward. I think each of the presentations, including my own, went by fairly fast, however I wished we'd had a little more time just because it felt a bit rushed. Overall, each group that presented today was very well done and easy to understand.
In terms of my own group's presentation, I felt like we had a really good experience. I liked that we were each able to bring forth our own ideas, translated onto our poster boards. I think that even though we didn't use technology (which probably would've been easier) our posters turned out well. I really enjoyed hearing each person in my group talk about their posters because it allowed our individual opinions to shine through. In the future, I may choose to do a poster board again, but perhaps followed with some sort of powerpoint just to solidify things so that my classmates can follow what I'm talking about a little easier.

I thought the presentations today were very well done. I really liked the power points. The geese analogy was really cute and relevant. I also liked how Morgan's group was so prepared and informative.

My groups performance went well. I was afraid that my collage would not be up to par but i was pleased to see that i was on track. I loved hour all of our individual ideas meshed into one and really explained our book well.

Reflection on the Presentations

Our group (with Tyler, Adele, Angelica, Julie, Jacob, etc),I think, did a good job presenting what Sula is about. It was nice having a group brainstorm about what we have learned from the book. Having group projects stimulate the people's minds. People are able to think more outside the box because other people encourage them to do so. Ideas are not left unsaid.

Eman and her group had a presentation for The Kite Runner. I like their presentation because they had a lot of ideas to share, different perspective about the book and what it is trying to convey.

Presentation Review

I really like the presentations they were all very well thought out and unique because we had two different books and different topics that were focused on. I caught on to the main point of all the presentations because they were very explicit about what exactly they were all trying to convey. Some arguments that were presented about The Pact were what a friendship is and how it is very important to have friends with a common goal so that they can all fly straight to it. Another book that was presented was The Kite Runner. I really like Ashante’s group presentation I thought it was very organized and relevant and the slide show with the pictures and stories were very nice. It made me want to actually see the movie.

Presentation

The presentation by Cherefah, Eman, and Erin was on The Kite Runner. The power point was very detail and organized. It is about a boy in Afghanistan that has a servant family living with him. This family consists of a father and a son. The boy servant names Amir is best friends with the other boy named Hassan. This story is just about their relationship between the two boys. One day, something very tragic happens to Amir in front of Hassan’s eyes. Hassan does not even help or save Amir from the situation. It is called The Kite Runner because Amir liked running after kites that were cut down by other kites in the kite flying competition.

Our group did a play on Sula which we chose a scene from the book. It was when Nel was being bully by four white boys, so Sula stood up to the boys by slicing one of her finger off. The significant of this scene were her bravery and being a true friend in no matter what situation the two girls are in they will stand by each other side.

Presentation Response and Reflection

I enjoyed The Pact presentation because of its originality, creativity and figurative expression. Though I arrived late to their presentation, I found that I did not arrive too late to be basked away in the ambiance of peace and tranquility that they created with natural sounds of wild geese used a symbol and comparison to the friendship they experienced while reading their novel, The Pact. The video put a very nice touch on things and was a very pleasant and enlightening surprise. Thailea’s writing was beautiful and accented the video nicely as she highlighted and illustrated the key highlighting points of friendship from within the book and our everyday lives. The last presenter did an excellent job in her speaking as well and was the “cherry-on-top” for their presentation. David was very creative as whole and in a way inspiring in that one can notice the dedication and organization that he carried with him during the presentation is what he carries in his every moment. Overall, I was very impressed by the presentation and would love to see more presentations like that in the future.

Summer, Stacey, Ellie and Alex’s collages were absolutely beautiful and served as amazing visuals that captured the true meaning of: “A picture is worth a million words.” The collages spoke for themselves and I really enjoyed looking at them up close to see what they individually had included on each theme. My group also presented The Kite Runner, so it was amazing to see how they presented differently and were able to include their individual insights collectively as a group. It was very creative, enlightening, interesting and collaborative. As a very unique way of performing, I enjoyed how they came together like the four directions of North, East, South and West.

My presentation went very well and I enjoyed it very much. I loved that we worked as a team on our presentation, meeting after class attempting to brainstorm analogies to use in our presentation as another one of our group members would be looking through the book for quotations we could use. Everyone gave their all and it was a very equal work load distributed amongst the four of us. Our spirits and attitudes were good, I only wish the sound clips would have worked. It would have made our presentation more moving and impactful.

The group that consisted of Audrey Tyler, Adele, Angelica, Julie, Jacob,(AM I MISSING SOMEONE?) I believe did a really good job. I like how they did a play because no one else did. I learned that in Sula, There were two main characters: Sula and Nel. Nel is bright and innocent, while Sula is a pessimist. I like how everyone had their own job and i remember at some point in time i was confused, Until i heard Julies voice summarizing what's about to happen, Which i found very helpful.

My group which included Erin, and Eman, did a power point presentation about the book "The Kite Runner". Its about a boy discovering what true friendship is, and how to convey that friendship towards a friend, because it might be too late when you realize what a friend should do. In Amir's case, I believe that he should have acted upon his urge to save Hassan, but instead resisted and felt guilty afterwards. I believe our presentation went very well. I believe it was very informative.

Presentation Review

The presentations helped me to compare two different relationships of friendship. In The Pact there is a solid agreement which encourages 3 boys to accomplish their common dream. The Kite Runner shows a more complex and ambiguous relationship where 2 boys have difficulties trusting each other.
Ashante is right when he says that “A picture is worth a million words” about Summer’s group. Those collages were very illustrative with great compositions that really helped me to understand the book’s complex message. It was very out-of-the-box presentation.
Morgan’s group was very organized and detail-oriented. Their way of threshing out the book’s components was awesome. It looks like there was a good rehearsal before the presentation.
Sherrie’s group focused on themes that other groups had forgotten about in The Pact, and made the spectator want to be more immersed in mentorship programs. It’s a shame that many of us were more focused on finishing the peer review at that time.
I thought our group did a good job analyzing the book and we wanted to come up with a different subject such as the geese analogy related to the friendship theme. I’m glad people were moved by the video.

Group Presentations

I really liked to hear from all of the students in class the other day. I am glad that all the groups seemed to have put their best foot forward. I also really liked that most of the groups did some kind of PowerPoint in the computer which was a very god was to catch the attention of the audience, and make even easier to understand too. I really liked Thailia's group because I didn’t read the book they read but I really was able to see what the book was about from their presentation. Over all I think that each group did very well in their presentations and I would like to do a power point in a future presentation of mine. But then again I’m glad that our group did something different and that each of us was able to speak our minds about the book.

My group did the presentation on The Kite Runner. I love that book. But the powerpiont was great. Our presentation was very informative.

I liked the presentation of "Sula."
Students made a skit based on one of the episodes from the book. Two girls, plaing Sula and her friend did a great job in delivering the characters. It was a good team work, and made us better undestand the main idea of the book.

The 2 power point for the kite runner was good. It gave me a sense and theme of what the book was about. The power point both were similar and both summarize the story and gave a sense of friendship. The student used the main characters of the book and how one of the friends the rich one treated the servant one really bad even though they werte brothers.

I was doing the skit about Sula and I think the presentation went well. My group and I talked about the thesis of the book and presented clearly about two girls who were friends but had different personalities. I learned a lot about the book and the theme of it. Working in groups help each person understand the book more.

Lit Circle Presentations response:

I enjoyed working in Lit circles while reading The Kite Runner, I learned so much about all of my group members. It was a very fun experience. I found it easier to read the book with a group rather than reading it on my own.

As for the other groups and their presentations, I enjoyed them as well. I like how they presented their book in a very unique way. It made me want to read their book "The Pact".

The presentations seemed to have been a hit. I already shared my reflections, which certainly agree with those presented here.

I certainly encourage students to think about collaborating once again on the SE presentations. It might be a bit harder, especially if you do not share the same person, but perhaps the presentations can be thematic?

Education, technology, economic development, environment, rehabilitation, to name a few.

Self Reflection:

Preparing for the book report presentation was rushed, yet i feel that we did a good job. I worked closely with David G. and briefly with Vanessa D. I know that our presentation could have been better and the group could have worked more close together earlier. I really have no real complaints, we all did our parts and pulled together a great presentation.

Peer's Presentations:

Group members: Stacey K. , Summer H. , Ellie J. , Alex P.

Nothing but great things to say about this group. I truly enjoyed that instead of doing a scripted presentation, this group took the create route by making collages that depicted the main theme that were draw for their reading of the book "The Kite Runner."This group did a good job in having abstracts for each student, which showed that this group was prepared. Great job, in my eye.

Group members:
Ashante W., Dereje B. , Andrew D. , Morgan H.

This group to me had the best special effects in their presentation. Gold star to the creator!! I also thought it was clever how they incorporated the topical invention concept in their presentation. The group worked great as a team, I could tell that each individual put forth a great amount of effort. I think this group did a wonderful job.

Group members:
Amani A. , Sherri S. , Mary W.

This group had a very nice power point background. This was another group that created a beautiful and fun power point. I was informed about the Three Doctors and the main themes of the book. Over all a good presentation.

I just loved it what I saw that day's presentation. Everybody was ready and organized within few days. The David's group came up with different style which can not forget easily. I learned two things; the nature of gees and about the book 'sula'. It was a great job they had done. On Alex's group, they pulled out different themes in 'The Kite Runner' and described details with the support of pictures. I like their creativity and explanations. On my group, I thought we did great job within short period of time. I can imagine what we are going to do if we got more time to work together. It was great group work. I would like to thank my group members. especial thanks to Ashante for putting them together all the work and taking for leadership.

What worked well in Zainadas presentation was that she had a lot of great examples to show that were from the book and the pictures were interesting. I have read the book before and it was nice to see how the characters look like. The music in the background added a nice touch to her presentation as well. Overall, I think she did a great job. I wish she did speak a little louder but other than that it was great.

My group did a skit. It was a very fun experience because instead of doing the typical presentation of just speaking about the book and standing there for about 4 minutes, we had fun and created a skit that involved everyone's minds and efforts. Im glad to hear that the class enjoyed it because we had fun performing it.
