Cyber-Assignment

Today we watched Revision Strategies. Post a response here. Will this information affect how you response to the task or seeing your essay anew?

In the first class we also talked about argumentation, deductive and inductive reasoning. We watched the introductory section of a film entitled: Pink Saris.

In the second class we reviewed the Possession Quiz and had a longer discussion about what it means to revise and how one can tell when he or she is finished. A student also brought up the problem of having too much feedback, especially when it is contradictory.

Announcements

Quite a few students were absent, I hope those students who are sick recover soon. I appreciate those students who text me and let me know why they are absent. Tomorrow there is a reading in the COA Library at 12 noon. I will read a poem and perhaps a short essay.

The Oakland International Film Festival continues this week at the Art Deco Theatre in Alameda on the old navy base about 10 minutes from the college. Visit www.oiff.org for the schedule. The film festival closes at the Grand Lake theatre in Oakland, Thursday, April 14, 2011.

The video, I thought, was really helpful. I never deciphered the difference between an edit and a revision. It does seem like so much work to revise, but it also makes perfect sense to rewrite with the reader in mind. I must admit I do not always remember to direct my paper to an audience; I just want to get the work done. When you told us that your classes required so much writing, and that you were never given a chance to revise, it made me appreciate the revision chance you offer us a lot more. I wish we were shown the film before we turned in our Half the Sky revisions. It was very insightful.

Revision Video Response

I thought the video was insightful. I found it helpful how they broke down the writing process. The video have helpful tips such as knowing who your audience is, what is the objective, and include major points. The video also discusses the difference between reader base prose and writer base prose. The main point of the film was revisions are necessary in order to write a great paper.

The Write Course Video Response

After watching the video I have to accept that revising is necessary in order to write a correct essay. I already had the same experiences as the actors in the film when writing the last essay. I wrote the essay and felt like I had finished it but then someone else read It and she said she didn’t understand my ideas. This caused me anxiety because it looked like everything I had done before was a waste of time and I had to start almost everything again. The video made me realize that I am not the only one stressed about writing correctly. I always think that everybody else writes better and faster than me. The better I revised the paper, the better it read. Putting myself in the shoes of the reader helped me to identify a quote or an analogy that could capture and keep the attention of the reader. Indeed, it made the paper easier to understand with fluency. Now I fully understand that writing is a process which takes time and patience to master.

Response: Revision Strategies

In watching this video, I re-called most of this information from prior classes. I already knew about the writing process and how important the revisions stage is to ones paper. On the other hand, I don't fully agree with re-writing whole essay over and over again as a way "Revising" ones work. If you think about it, any one piece of writing can be revised many times, but what for? I max out at 2 revisions, anything is just to time consuming. I also feel that, revising ones work to much can take away the integrity of the essay. I do believe that this video could be seen as a great tool to use in the class room, but like Mary W. said, it would have been nice to see this a bit earlier in the game.

The revision video was a good reminder of how to improve my essay writing. I previously considered revising and editing to be one and the same, rather than recognizing the distinct difference of correcting vs. reformation of sentences and paragraphs. It pointed out the importance of writing for your target audience, and the lack of effect writer-based prose has on the reader. This will help improve my essays the most. They also mentioned cutting paragraphs into individual sentences to re-arrange them into better formed paragraphs. I've done this in a previous class, and did not care for that method, but it must work for some.

Reflection on the Reflection Strategies Video

The information given will definitely affect how I will write and revise my essay. I always thought that revising was the same as editing. Also, when I write essays, I never really considered about re-reading it the next day and see if it actually makes sense. Sometimes, I get caught up with writing that I almost think that what I have written really made sense. Also, when one of the people from the interview was talking about this one syndrome, I thought that maybe I have that, but not too much of the ego telling me that my writing is perfect, but I filter it too much. I don't really write all my ideas first then revise them later.

Response: Revision Strategies

The video was very helpful to revise my essay and give me new information that I did not consider in my writing. I learned in the revision strategies, in writing: Read aloud. Reading a paper aloud encourages you to read every little word. While reading, put yourself in your audience's shoes. Playing the role of the reader encourages you to see the paper as your audience might. In the future, if nobody is available to proofread my work, I can do this myself. After writing my material, put it aside for a day. By doing so, I probably might have kept me from noticing problems. Then read it aloud as if I were reading someone else's work.

I thought that the video was interesting in the fact that it showed, in detail, the importance of revision. I also liked the part where they highlighted the differences between revising, or rewriting, and just plain old editing. Although the video may need a bit of touching up. This is because it is the 21st Century and a video made in 1984 is not quite as appealing as one that would be attractive to less seasoned audiences.

Revision Film

The film that we watched helped me alot. It is true what they kept saying. There is a difference between editing and revising. Having someone else read it before I turn it in will help a lot and making sure that I read it aloud will help as well. Making sure that topics or words in the essay aren't too vague is a helpful tip. Overall this film has helped me to create better essays.

Revision Strategies-Response:
This information will come into affect when I come to the point of revising my essays in the future. The clip we watched in class was informative and got to the point quickly. They presented the information in such a clear way; students like me could understand it. I enjoyed the comedy aspect; it was very amusing. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’m glad it was presented to the class in such a way that it caught most of our attention. It was easy to follow because they were discussing the writing process among themselves instead of talking to a screen, reading a teleprompter. It was unique how they watched interviews within the clip because it made the audience not feel alone. The interviews explain the mistakes we make are actually very common among new writers.

I never thought that revision is such an essential part of writing. I used to think that only a bad essay should be revised, but after watching the video about revision strategies I changed my mind. Revision is not the process of rewriting; it is the process of reconsidering your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, reorganizing your presentation. The techniques described in the video helped me see my mistakes.

The video shown in class was very helpful, I just wish we had watched before we have done our essay. They talk about very important topics and steps to write a better paper, the book you had in class is very good too. Seeing it made me remember that I have it at home, my husband used for his English 1A class and I haven't noticed the book there until now.

The video was very helpful. I learned people cannot have a perfect essay in the first try and revise is needed for a good essay. I always thought a essay could be written up and turned in but revision are needed and multiple revision are needed for a perfect essay. I learn I cannot get a perfect essay done for first try. Revision is part of a good essay.

This video was very helpful because at times for me it is very confusing to write essays. I always have a lot of thought to put in but in the wrong format. The movie helped me think about alot of other good topics to write about. Revision is the key to a good essay

Revision Strategies

(Due to the maintainment problem the blogs I put up yesturday got erased)We watched a movie in class the other day and I think that it touched a lot of good points about the writing process. I enjoyed it because it lets us know that writing does not come out in a perfect way in the first time. I think that it is a good thing that these people show this because this way it shows everybody that writing is not only for the brightest. Anyone can create a good essay over time. And if they follow the rules for writing and the revision process it is almost guaranteed that a great essay is going to emerge sooner or later.
