Today in class we are going to take the sentences developed in the exercise yesterday and write a 3-4 paragraph essay looking at: Introduction, Thesis (pro argument), Antithesis (con argument), and Synthesis (conclusion).
Homework:
Post the essay here for the group. As individuals, comment on the process, that is, looking at the argument form like this where one considers all sides of the issue.
Yesterday we looked at Topical Invention, a questioning strategy to develop: analogies, definition, consequence, testimony.
When using this strategy, students are to reference the topic in each sentence.
The questions are:
Definition: What is it/What was it?
Consequence: What caused it/Did it cause?
Analogy: What is it like or unlike?
Testimony: What does an authority say about it?
Students were to post their thesis sentences developed using the invention strategy: Topical Invention.

Introduction paragraph to in-class essay
A revoultionary or a follower?
Afeni Shakur embodied a revolutionary to end black oppression. A revolutionary is an intelligent leader willing to fight for change. Afeni Shakur's childhood experiences gave optimism, anger, and compassion to seek her role in a revolution. She views her mother as a weak individual and her father as a bully. Shakur's early relationships with men wounded her ability to trust and settle. Her experiences led her to the Black Panther Party as a revolutionary. The parties goals were, "...(F)reedom...power to determine the destiny of our Black and oppressed communities...full employment ...end to the robbery of our black and oppressed communities..." (Guy, 60-61).

Antithesis – Con Argument to in-class essay
Afeni Shakur’s involvement in the Black Panther Party was her choice. But by choosing to be a revolutionary she sacrificed a lot though out her life. Shortly after Afeni was out on bail after 11 months in jail, she got pregnant with her son Tupac. Afeni’s role in the Black Panther Party consumed her which hindered her ability to always be there for her children.

Afeni Essay Conclusion-
The consequence of Afeni's choices label her as a revolutionary. She opened 28 schools that the white teachers union tried to keep closed. She worked in welfare centers and helped people get jobs. On page 83, she tells Jasmine that God gave her a brilliant mind. Looking at Afeni from a nature vs nurture perspective, the brilliant mind would be destiny and the consequences of her actions are the result of her choosing to act. Afeni is a Revolutionary figure because she had to sacrifice herself, family and other things to become a leader in something that was bigger than herself. The black panther party brought her power and respect on a national level, but in the end it brought her heart ache of losing loved ones, incarceration and drug addiction.

Synthesis Paragraph for In-Class Essay: Inheritance
As a child Afeni Shakur channeled the anger that she inherited from her father and grandfather through fighting and partying as a form of rebellion. In her later years, she was able to learn from her decisions and her children to channel that inherited anger in a healthier way. Afeni was able to reflect on her sense of arrogance that she inherited to analyze her choices and determine her own destiny. Jasmine Guy, Afeni's bibliographer, defines her testimony as: “I'm a woman who speaks in a voice and I must be heard at times I can be quite difficult, I'll bow to no man's word” (209).

Inheriting Her Life
In the book Evolution of a Revolutionary by Jasmine Guy, Afeni Shakur discusses how her people shaped the choices she made in her life that lead to inheriting the wisdom and values she has today. Afeni Shakur is caught in a cycle of hate, from her great grandfather down to Tupac. Born in a time of ridicule, racism and hate, Afeni inherited the soul of a survivor. With the experience of the lumbee rebellion, Afeni learned about the power of unity and rebellion. As Afeni Shakur states, “The more I learned about who my people came from, the more I can accept who they came out to be” and therefore accept herself.

Independence-
Afeni inherited her independence, leadership skills, and comprehensive skills from complications relating to her father and grandfather. Afeni adolescent years was broken and strengthen by watching her mother get abused by her father and eventually leaving him. Afeni's childhood experiences caused her to rebel and created a want to be recognized and different. Afeni once said "Well, see that's what happens in a kids mind when you have someone doing things secretly and it's not talked about openly".

Antithesis-
Afeni Shakur had a very troubling past. Her abusive father emotionally scarred her and left her with a resistant and angry characteristic. This strong sense of resistance and lack of outlet in her life led her to seek salvation in the Black Panther Party. Little did she know that this salvation would soon turn into an unjust conviction by the federal court system. It was her inheritance of her resistant character that eventually led to her demise in the BPP. Through it was unintentional, it was inevitable. Not only did Afeni have to come to terms with these consequences, but the same inheritance that occurred between her an her father also occurred again with her son, Tupac.

Response to Topical Invention Writing Style
I real like the way that Professor Sabir broke the topic invention sentence styles down into the four specific ways. As a class I thought that it was very interesting that even though Afeni Shakur has so many contradictions and is so dynamic the groups came up with relatively the same points. Clearly, everyone is not the same and this style of writing really brings optimism. I like it and I thought it was pretty fun to put together an essay in groups using this style.

Response to Topical Invention
This is the first time I have ever done an activity like this and I really enjoy it. Breaking off into groups and writing our own paragraph is really interesting, and much more enjoyable than writing on our own. Moreover, it is interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on the subject. So many point of views give the paragraph a more well-rounded view on the topic.

Afeni Essay Conclusion
Afeni Shakur made the most of her life – an impressive feat considering the difficulties that she had to overcome. The experiences of her youth helped her develop as an activist. Witnessing the everyday hardships of poverty and social injustice motivated Afeni to become more outspoken when she noticed injustice. This anger and reactionary attitude had a major influence in determining her future. She spoke out about social policies that affected her community as a whole, as well as against internal social issues such as abuse and mistreatment by men against women in the African American community. Unfortunately, these same life hardships also drew her to the distractions and ultimate addictions of drugs and alcohol. Afeni’s life was a long and complicated journey filled with difficult choices. But her life story and work with the Black Panther Party serves as an example of how one person can take power back from their oppressors, as well as turn the anger of injustice into a motivation to put something positive back into the community.
