Social Entrepreneur Research Essay

The seminar today was very insightful, motivating, and educational. Today the presenter expressed the importance of utilizing professionals in your local community that can be found at community colleges, like local business leaders, and visiting the Small Business Center.

Today I learned that If I develop a proper business plan I can visit the Small Business Center to find out more resources that can help me achieve my business goal. The local business men/women on the panel talked about the importance of conducting a research study to help your knowledge of your product and competitors. Testing your product and collecting data can save you money in the long run.

Listening to your customers about your product and service is key to making decisions that will keep the consumer buying a particular product. Stepping out of your comfort zone is another piece of advice that I got from the seminar. Nothing is going to come to us sitting down doing nothing. It is important for want to be entrepreneurs to step out and meet and network with individuals with similar goals and aspiration. Having a mentor can provide you a wide network of resources. Learning from people who are already in the business is always good for growth in skills, and references. Today someone on the panel also talk about the importance of helping and mentoring someone else that you may know or see in your neighborhood. Some people need help with things that are considered little or nothing to others. It is important to give back to society and help develop knowledgeable minds for the future.

Social Entrepreneur Extra Credit

I went to the Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour today and I learned a lot about what it takes to start and maintain your own business, as well as making sure your business is socially responsible. According to the book "The Millionaire Next Door" 80% of millionaires are entrepreneurs, which I found pretty cool. The first keynote speaker was Chris Miller. He started the company Delta Real Estate Portfolio (Delta REP)In a nutshell, he buys property and turns it into a place where young students and professionals can live. He even has his own team of people that come and clean the houses and stock them with necessities! He was very nice and had a great presentation.

The other keynote speaker was Rob Nicholson. He is a great example of a social entrepreneur. He created the non profit organization SMILE (Single Mothers Independently Living Everyday) which helps single mothers with everyday stuff around the house that they might be able to do. In 2009 Rob and his mother opened up the Rob Nicholson Center which a day facility for developmentally disabled adults in Ohio. I was really impressed with him because his goal in life is to help other people, and to mentor those trying to start their socially responsible business.

I took a lot away from this seminar. I did think it was a bit too corny for me a some points but I thought it was great for those who need motivation and that extra push to have to courage and persistence to start their own business.
