Freewrite and Cyber-Assignment
Today in class the freewrite looked at summer and time's passage. I waxed philosophical for a bit first (smile). However, how you chose to reflect on summer solstice or the longest day of the year is up to you.
The second part of the reflection had to do with the developing ideas to write about or Invention using topics. Our topic is "time." We spent some time looking at what is meant by abstract nouns vs. concrete, what empirical means and how one can communicate one's meaning when the idea is not tangible.
Students were to develop a definition: what is it/what was it, an analogy: what is it like or unlike, a consequence: what caused it/did it cause/will it cause, and testimony: what does an authority say about it.
Use the word TIME in each sentence.
Students shared their freewrites and thesis sentences.
We then broke into groups and shared homework from the package: Writing with a Thesis. We completed the package and reviewed the answers.
We took a break and then reviewed essay structure, paragraph structure and Initial Planning for essay writing: What is the subject? Who is the audience? What is the purpose of the writing task? (Hacker 8). What question the writer would like the essay to answer? What will be the main writing strategy?
We talked about annotating texts (Hacker 12-13). I had a handout, but students seemed comfortable with the task, so we skipped that assignment.
In Hacker we went over Planning. Homework is to read and do any associated exercises pertaining to Section 1a (1-11); and 1b (11-16).
Tomorrow we will look at Writing about Texts: 46a (346-351); and summarizing: 46c (351-357); 53c (417-418); 51c (408-409).
Homwork is to summarize the essay we read and annotated: "Does Our Writing Style Give Away Our Gender?" by Clive Thompson
Bring in a three paragraph summary analysis where you clearly state the thesis or premise or key point. Talk about the writer's intention and whether he is fair in his judgement. Look at the evidence. Is the work unbiased?
In each paragraph use one type of evidence from the article: a free paraphrase, a shorter in-text citation and conclude with a block quote. The essay will have a total of only three (3) citations.
Bring the summary to class to share in the morning. Bring Mighty Be Our Powers as well.

Freewrite: Summer is Here!
Time- Intangible (abstract)
Summer is here! It is the summer solstice and officially the longest day of the year. Speaking of the longest day of the year, we can do so many great things with this extra time. I love that at 9pm the sun is still out and it looks as if it is only 6 o' clock. Time can mean anywhere from measuring the time on a clock to a deeper meaning of measuring our past, present and future. A lot of people, me included, compare time to money. Time is like money because it can be spent easily. One moment it's here and the next it's gone! What is different about time is, once you spend it, it's gone. Tomorrow is gone and we will never get it back. We need to value time and our future days. The more time we waste making the same mistakes the less time we have to appreciate the positive parts of life we can experience. I guess time depends on the individual. Sometimes a minute can feel like hours and days feel like minutes. Time is too valuable to waste.
"It's being here now that's important. There's no past and there's no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past but we cannot relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we dont know if there is one."

With time, comes seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and years. There is a past, present, and future as well, but this does not mean time is a stright line. It is branched out into a sort of ripple effect. Every choice we make creates a set of events that are put into motion, and then once the ripple has fully spread, the water is calm again until the next choice is made. In respect to time, being that today is the summer solstice, we are given more time in the day to enjoy the beautiful sun and weather. I myself am about to go to the beach and soak it all up. But, what if I decided not to, and just stayed home to be a couch potato? Then I would miss out on the benefits of today. So, instead, I will be wise with my time, and enjoy life to it's fullest.

Summer time is not the same as when I was a child. I used to sleep in and when I got up there were no worries about rushing to be somewhere. It was all play outside with friends or catching the bus up to Roberts Park to go swimming. Now everything seems to be mostly work and no play. Summer is supposed to be about barbeque gatherings, pool side fun, vacation time, amusement park hopping, outdoor picnics, camping, or just a walk in the park. However, now that I am a mom, everything for summer has to accommodate the children according to their age and lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong all of these things are still possible but takes a lot more planning and packing. Overall, I do love summer out of all seasons because I do enjoy all of the above mentioned.

Summer is here! So many thoughts come to mind, time to enjoy the summer time fun. I'm sure we can all agree something about the sun, nice weather and long days put us in a happier more positive mood.
Summer time means good juicy fruits, water sports family fun; priceless memories. As a kid I enjoyed summer, swim team practice and meets everything was timed. I can hear the chanting, pull, pull, pull; as my head came up for air.
The fruits are always much better this time of the year. Sweet watermelon, ripe strawberries and mouth watering peaches are my favorite summer fruits.
During the summer I'm able to spend more time with my children, exploring the outdoors. With the days being longer, and sun still shinning you can almost loose track of time.
Every summer my family goes camping, the air smells so fresh and the quietness is pricrless.Cooking outside and spending quality time with no electronics give the kids a different outlook on life.
God provides us with all these things, and is patient.

It is summer time and as if today the days will be longer. This is great because I am taking another summer course so from six to eight. When I get out it feels like it is around four as oppose to eight. It is a great feeling because I feel like I can get more things done. The weather really helps a lot too, because when it is gloomy and cold outside it puts me in a very lazy mood. When I think about time it reminds me of a cousin that I have. She is always saying that “time is money”, that is her motto. When you think about it in part it is true. In her example, she is always drowning herself in jobs because she wants to sustain herself and her two year old son. Now that I am talking about jobs it makes me think of many people who do not use their time wisely. They are out in the streets, setting bad example to children and teenagers. There are those who are very organized and depend a lot on time. I think I fall into that category. I am always looking at the clock. When I am taking a nap I tend to turn on my alarm because I know that I have other responsibilities.

Summer has arrived and today is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the entire year. It has been a long time since this day arrived in 2011; approximately 365 days, 525,600 minutes, or 31,536,000 seconds. Time is something we all know. It is known by everyone around the world and its influence is felt by the entire universe. But it dawns the question: What is time? Some would say that time is, in a physical sense, the numerical measurement of the Earth’s rotation around its axis. When we think about the definition of time, it is actually much more complicated than one we would expect. Societies around the globe use time as a universal medium to tell various things, from the proper time to harvest to getting to a destination in the certain time. In actuality, time itself is intangible, meaning it is something that cannot be physically held. It is something we cannot taste, feel, touch, smell, or see (and no, clocks MEASURES time, it is not time.) Time itself is used in many forms, especially in the English language. A simple way of understand this is that time can be expressed in four ways: definition, analogy, consequence, and testimony. The concept of time is often difficult for one to understand. Analogies can make it easier to conceptualize it. There are many analogies one can create; one of which can be that “Time is like a paycheck, it’s gone before you know it.” This compares time, something intangible, to a paycheck, something well known and tangible, and shows the connection that that time and money from a paycheck can disappear quickly.

Summer is here. Time has pass quickly. It keeps fly through beside us. People grows old second by second. It is like a energy that we live with everyday, but no one can ever control it. Time can be everything to different people. To me, time is a unstoppable power. It helps people to find out who they are, and makes people to know more about the others around them. It flies too fast and takes away many treasures from people. It also has the power to make people rush, growing old and die at the end. People always think that one day we can take over the time and control this wonderful power, but instead, we are actually under its control. All the thing that people can do is only to wait or find something to do to fit into it. This summer, I am not going to let the time pass silently through me.
I have to do something that is unforgettable in my memory.

Summer is the time when flowers open their blossom, when trees turn to green, and when we all come back to life after a long winter. The winter that kept all of us under blankets at home. Summer is the only season that brings energy to every different age. During the summer people get excited when they look to the nature. They go to picnics, trips and adventures. Last summer I went to Lake Tahoe with my family. We had a great time down there.
I start every day of trip with beautiful voice of births and the sound of the wave in Tahoe Lake. It felt like these births got drunk in this early morning. The beauty of the nature during the summer time made them to lose their minds and start singing for them. They couldn’t control themselves s do we. My whole family was really happy to see how spontaneously these flowers were smiling at us.Today was the first day of the summer, and I start feeling the energy on me. I am looking forward for another trip with the family. I hope everyone start a beautiful summer without work and school stress.

Summer is the warmest of the four seasons. At the summer solstice, the days are longest and the nights are shortest. Summer is always associated with the hot and dry weather. I love summertime when I was a child. It’s the time of the year where everybody visits their family members who live in the country side. When summer comes my brother, sister and I always visit our grandparents who live far away from the city.
Summertime means something different to everyone. For some, it feels like that the warm months call for slowing down and enjoying the simple things they love doing. For me, it’s time to relax, slow down and be surrounded by nature. Sitting under a shady tree in my grandparent’s front yard, fishing at a nearby lake with my grandfather or simply taking a walk with my sister and brother is the way I spend my summer day. I wish those days to come again since I can’t visit my grandparents anymore.

There are many seasons throughout the year such as fall, summer, spring, and winter. Throughout the day some people will have different emotions and feel different depending on the weather change, for example when winter comes around people will often feel cold and will have to add more layers on in order to keep them warm while during the spring, summer, and fall people will have fewer layers because the weather is not really cold. The way that I identify with the seasons within my body would be the way that I am feeling but as well as how cold or hot the temperature is outside, to elaborate on this when if I feel sad on a cold day will often dress in nice warm clothes and will often feel really sad or annoyed by what other people would have to say. During the summer and spring time, I would feel content and would often smile toward other people.

Summer is a time where you can get lost in time and just chill out if you don’t have anything else to do. Time seems like it takes it slow in the summer to give you more time to live day by day relax sun bathe maybe even get a tan. When I think of summer, I think of it as a time to relax. This is the season where most students get to take a break from academics and just rest their mind and enjoy the warm weather. Younger children, get to go to all of the seasonal activities that come with summer and play care-free with their friends. However, the older people are, and depending on what their goals and ambitions are, summer may be the time to get ahead or catch-up-- whether it is taking summer courses, working at a job or internship, or prepping for what is to come. Summer may be a useful time to take advantage of the chance to be that much closer to your dreams and goals. It is also an important decision to students. Students must decide whether to sacrifice this precious time to build up on credits and experience, or lose the opportunity to just relax and melt away in the summer heat. Summer allows extra time for people looking for it and separates those who want to get ahead from others. As for my internal season, I feel like I am in my summer stage. I am at the point in my life where I need to take advantage of all the opportunities that arise. I may be a full-time student, but I still feel like there is room for me to relax a little bit, maybe on academic breaks, whereas when I become a full-time worker, there will be less chances to unwind.

Summer is here!
Today being the summer solstice, makes time that more valuable. Sometime people take time for granted, they do not notice every second of every minute that they are living. People always live for tomorrow and never focus on today. Even though i have a ton of things to do today I will still find time to enjoy myself. Life has to be enjoyed as well as time. Today i will not focus on the hours that are spent on work or school because both of those thongs I do in order to receive a bigger reward in the end. With school I will graduate and become something of myself by receiving a degree, as for work im making money that i can spend in things I like or things that I like to do. Because the saying is true, we've got nothing but time in the end.
-Definition of Time (noun) a: the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exist or continues: Duration
b: a non spatial continuum that is measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to future
-Analogy: Time is like a circus, always packing and moving away.
-Consequence: Time causes pain relief. Pain relief, when a person dies and a family member or a friend mourns their death. Time is the most crucial thing to coupe.
-Testimony: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past."

Summer is the time to let loose, relax and enjoy the summer sun. Life is like a song when summer rolls around. Its a happy time in the year. Life is full, daring, relaxing and fun for everyone. Today summer is here! it is the first day of summer and is also the longest day of the year! One can rest and relax on this great sunny and beautiful day. You can compare this summer season with time. Time goes by and never waits for anyone. Time is never ending or slowing. Its constantly on the move the day you arrive. Time is a constant cycle of seasons that is never ending. Time is like a slice of pizza, its gone before you know it. How you organize and conduct your time is essential for a bright future. For some people summer is just a hot season that occur once a year. For others it's a time where you get to bond with your families and enjoy a nice day at the beach. It's a time where the sun comes out bringing joy and happiness to everyone faces. For most kids summer is a time where there is no school, no homework, playing video games all day, and sleeping in till twelve in the afternoon. It's a chance to hang out with your friends and go for a swim in the hot weather. To me summer time past by too quickly and so does time in general. It seems to me that time past by fast when you do not want it to and slow down when you want it to past by. Although time is not tangible it’s something that everyone take advantage of and waste. In a blink of an eye time seems to zoom by right in front of us and we don't even notice it. As today is the longest day of summer it makes me think about how precious time really is. So this summer I will not let time zoom by right through me. Instead I will spend every second with joy and happiness and i hope everyone will too.

Summer is here!
Today we had the longest daylight time of the year. It was also the first day of summer for me.
Waking up pleasantly under the sun that shines brightly, no matter if it stabbed my eyes. I later found that bunches of lights gradually stretched and extended to each corner. Everything seemed warm and peacefully waiting to be resplended including myself.
The summertime is the warmest period of the year. It is like a campfire in the night brings people warmness and happiness. It overheats the soil and air, and so makes sour sweat pouring from our body. Summertime is also like a moment of magic where flowers are all bloomed after a wand waved.

It may be summer right now and being in summer school, it really does not feel like summer to me. The idea of having to go to school during the summer makes me feel as if I am still in my school year during spring. Also, the weather during the summer is usually hot and sunny but there have been days where it is cold. The bipolar weather and abnormal temperatures make me feel confused about the season we are in. But thinking back on the amount of summers that I had, it brings back all the memories that I spent with my family. One thing that I regret not doing during my summers was finding internships or taking classes. Before I became more active, all I ever did during my summers were hang around the house and do nothing. There was usually summer homework to do but usually I would find myself having nothing to do. Thinking back on it, it makes me feel that I have wasted my past summers. I wanted to do summer internships, taking summer school, and do other programs but unfortunately, the time just didn’t work out to fit all of them in my summer schedule. It was definitely a great disappointment to me when I could do some of the things I really wanted to do but this year, I became more active and I looked forward to this summer the most. Summertime to most people is a time to relax, go out with friends, and just have fun. Summer is usually a relaxing period for most people, a time to seek new adventures and meet new people. I plan on spending my summer by hanging out with friends and family, have BBQs, and go jogging around Lake Merritt and the Oakland hills. Almost everyone will tell you summer time seems to feel to go a lot faster than the other seasons. Time is something we all would like to get more of, or even go back in time to fix some mistakes in our past. I consider time a blessing, the more time you have to be alive in this Earth, the better. Summer is here! But unlike most people, I do not enjoy the hot weather. But nevertheless, we have the sun out, along with the renowned summer break. Who does not look forward to the summer breaks? But summer is the season that everyone loves. Is it because it has the connotation of late nights and even later mornings? Every student looks forward to the long two to three month break. I am no exception. Perhaps it is people wearing the appropriate clothing, or something even the inappropriate clothing.
Summer is when people go hunting for jobs, internships, work studies, education, and experiences. It can be considered free time for students and for many, summer is well-known for R and R. Rest and relaxation.
As mentioned in my introduction, I have always utilized my summers. I don’t regret giving a month every year in the summer to further my education, because usually, I get another month afterwards to rest easy. And typically, all I do at home is rest and relax. Besides, who would consider a 7am class insane?

Summer is the season of relaxing in the nice warm weather(depending where you are living)and using your time to kick back and relax. Unfornately that’s not the case for all of us. Some of us sacarifice time during the summer to wake up early and head to class rather than sleeping in our nice warm beds. Sadly some of us feel like there is never enough time during the summer to do all the things we want. I think that’s what summer is all about time and what you with it. It’s something that’s always constant that is never ending. Time can be long and boring or it can fly when you’re having fun
Summer is the season I wait for the entire year; it is the most wonderful time of the year. Everything is so bright, so colorful and it makes life seem much more interesting. Summer days are gorgeous, from morning to night. Summer mornings are so bright, so loud. You can hear birds singing, construction workers, traffic, simply during summer there is much more movement outdoors. I love summer, I really enjoy the weather we get in the bay area, and it is just perfect. I enjoy this season because it does not matter what season I am living in, summer doesn’t let me be anything but happy because of its brightness. As of right now, I feel like I am living in fall, because there is so much I am leaving behind and I am moving on with my life. I feel like the trees when their leaves fall free on the floor, because I feel like I am getting rid of sentiments and letting them fall off of me. But thankfully we are in summer, a beautiful and bright season, which helps me heal. I believe everyone enjoys summer, from the youngest kid to the oldest person, because there is so much to do during the summer, there is more time to be outside to play or just to water the garden. It is a beautiful season, my favorite.

Finally summer is here, the time has come, the moment is near. the heat waves rising, the sun is out, the sweat drips, that's not surprising.
My inspiration comes like the rays from the sun. Striking my chest like a high caliber gun.
And in this heat I feel paled and oblique, my skin becomes stale, brown and unique.
Smiles in the air, the world is slowly changing, there's no time to spare with this passion in me ragging.
people to talk places to see, take a love walk on a hot summers eve.
And at this time there's nothing better to do then to be in the sunsets enjoying the view.
Summer is my season, the time I was born
Yet i know my reasons to love the Storms.
