Abstract for Social Entrepreneur

Mary Kay: You Can Have It All, is something of a guide for women to follow so they can better understand the do's and dont's of business. Using a strategic plan she developed herself, Mary Kay lets you in on some secrets that will help you on your way to success, although some of her insight is common sense that some people just need to hear to be reassured. While giving you such valuable information, Mary Kay also helps you dive deep into your own mind so when the time comes and you need to adapt your business strategy to certain key elements, it will be like second nature to you and the rough times will go a lot smoother. Mary Kay uses her own experiences to show you that she not only practices what she preaches, but she has become successful because of it.

Initial Planning Sheet
1. The subject of my paper is to show my readers that Mary Kay has valid points when she guides women to become better entrepreneurs.
2. I want to be able to differentiate what a women might have to go through compared to what I myself will have to go through.
3. I will be writing for the students of Professor Sabir's english 1A class.
4. I want my paper to identify what is needed for a woman to become successful.
5. My main writing strategy will be that of an argument.

Abstract

After witnessing the horrific conditions at the middle school presented in the 2004 film Super Size Me, Alice Waters, who is an American author, pioneer, and restaurant owner, created the Chez Panisse Foundation in 1996. The social activist saw that the innutritious meals served at schools were contributing to the decline in education and health among the students, and was determined to do something about it. Her concept of edible education, which is the new teaching style that integrates the traditional school subjects with gardening and cooking, becomes the backbone to the creation of the Edible Schoolyard Project and School Lunch Initiative program. She adjusts the school curriculum to better fit the students’ needs to gain the right education and knowledge to succeed in life. The two partnered programs under Waters’ Chez Panisse Foundation successfully improve the health and education of its participating schools’ students.

Initial Planning Sheet
1.The subject of my paper will be education.
2.I want to discuss how Alice Waters uses organic foods to improve students’ education.
3.I will be writing for an audience that is mostly unfamiliar with the social entrepreneur and her business.
4.The question I want answered is: “How does Alice Waters argue that eating healthier is healthier for the mind as opposed to eating unhealthy food?”
5.I will be using the description writing strategy, as I am just telling Alice Waters’s part of the story, not mine.

Abstract

Safety and violence are among the most critical issues facing youth in Oakland—one of the most violent cities in America. Nicole Lee is the founding executive director of Urban Peace Movement, an emerging Oakland-based organization that works to transform the mindset and culture of urban violence. Urban Peace Movement is an organization that grew out of the Silence the Violence Campaign that Lee founded in 2006 originally as a project of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. When there is violence in our community, it's easy for a lot of us to pretend that we're removed from it all, that it has nothing to do with us as individuals. Nicole Lee wants to make a change in the community; she starts working with Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (EBC) in 2001. While Lee is working with (EBC), she gets a chance to go to this training that she first encounters the concepts of "being" and "possibility," which are strange concepts for her to take in as a community organizer, but it makes her see the violence in her community from a different perspective and inspired her to make a change.

Initial Planning

1. What is the subject of your paper?

Social Entrepreneur Abstract:
Jessica Jackley

Jessica Jackley is a social entrepreneur who is the Co-founder and CEO of the world’s first person to person micro lending website. “Kiva is an organization that allows people to lend money to small local businesses in developing countries and in the United States” (Wikipedia).

I chose Jessica Jackley’s story because as we are learning about social entrepreneurs I saw a commercial she did for Best Buy, and her story drew me in. “It all started with a dream and a laptop” as Mrs. Jackley states in her commercial. Her organization has transformed into a huge benefit to the world and has made a huge impact on young entrepreneurs as well. She is also actively involved in organizations that empower women in micro lending, technology and an organization called Allowance for Good. Jackley has worked in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with Village Enterprise Fund and Project Baobab. Kiva’s base of operations is in San Francisco, California and it has over 450 volunteers across the world. Kiva officially started in October 2005 and continually provides over one hundred million dollars to borrowers a year with a 98.98% repayment rate. Jessica Jackley has learned the most about entrepreneurship from the very people starting their own businesses in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania thanks to her help. Entrepreneurship is deciding you want to make your life better and to seize all the opportunities that come towards you. It’s about making tomorrow a better today.

Initial Planning Sheet

1. The subject of my paper is about Jessica Jackly, who is the Co-founder and CEO of the worlds first person to person microlending website. Kiva is an organization that allows people to lend money to small local businesses in developing countries and in the United States (wikipedia).

2. I chose Jessica Jackley’s story because as we were learning about social entrepreneurs I saw a commercial she did for Best Buy, and her story drew me in so I did some research on her. “ It all started with a dream and a lab top” as Mrs.

3. I am writing for well educated audiences who have experience in researching social entrepreneurs.

“Project Baobab provides free education and entrepreneurial grants to youth, especially women, through a specialized life skills and business curriculum in Kenya, a country of 40% unemployment with 58% of the people living below a $2 a day[1]. Upon graduation, students compete for $100 grants to fund their business idea. Project Baobab currently operates in 5 communities: Meru, Githunguri, Naivasha, Mai Mahiu, and Olooseos.[2]”

4. The question I would most like to answer in my paper is despite fraud and interest issues, can a non profit organization be profitable and help poverty by person to person microlending?

5. My main writing strategy will be describing, comparing and contrasting the ins and outs of what it takes to successfully run this particular organizations and many like them. I will argue the problems high interest rates cause and why every loan can not always be successful.

SE Presentation Comments

Lori- Christine Pearson
The poster was nice and colorful. She presents much information about the organization and its products, but it would have been nice to hear more about the social entrepreneur herself, maybe how she became inspired to do this.

Charlie- Matt Flannery and Jessica Jackley (Kiva)
I liked how he started explaining the challenges they initially faced starting up, but then he goes on to mention how they succeed today. He explains how Kiva works really well and addresses assumptions that are made.

Tsegereda- Nicole Lee (Urban Peace Center)
I liked the introduction of the social entrepreneur and how she got inspired to do her work. Numbering the steps of how they help individuals and the effects is really helpful as well.

Saalihah- Alice Waters (Chez Panisse Foundation)
She gives good factual information, like date of birth, dates of opening the restaurant and foundation. She explains the what each program that Alice Waters is connected with.

Tamara- Jessica Jackley (Kiva)
I like how she explained how she found the social entrepreneur on a Best Buy commercial. The abstract was really informational, filled with quotes and statistics. She really rounds up all the main points and explains Jackley’s inspiration really well. Tamara had really great presence in front of the class and presented the material really confidently.

LaTasha- Dr. Raye Mitchel (G.U.R.L.S rock Leadership Program)
I really like the personal connections in the presentation—it gave the presentation enthusiasm and emotion. I do wish she referred to the poster more and explained the pictures, but the presentation as a whole flowed really smoothly and she was comfortable with the information.

Marisol- Favianna Rodriguez
Marisol seemed really comfortable with the facts and she described Favianna Rodriguez’s work really well. Marisol told the story about her mother and what her parents would have said, and that was a good contribution to the presentation.

Christine- Gloria Brown(health activist)
The abstract’s introduction with all the delicious-sounding food was a really great attention grabber. She gave much information about the organization and the process that the program had to go through to get established.

Tiffany Chang continued

Rigo- Carlos Montes (The Brown Beret)
It’s always interesting to listen to the introduction before he starts the presentation. Rigo seems really comfortable whenever he talks- he walks around and uses hand motions. I like how he pointed out to the point that he personally liked, and elaborated on that.

Linde- Starla Sireno (Fearless Company)
The addition of what Sireno likes to do in her free time is interesting, so we know a little more about her. She gives Sireno credibility by adding in her many past experiences, which is really helpful to the audience.

Raymond- Christian Richmond, Kirsten Coby
Despite the obstacle of not having a projector, I think he adjusted to presenting without it very well. He still very calm when he was presenting and explained the entrepreneurs and organization smoothly. He knows a lot about the current life of the two leaders.

Anthony- Mary Kay (Mary Kay Cosmetics)
From the presentation, I now have a better understanding of Mary Kay. I originally thought that Mary Kay was just about make-up. Anthony explains well that it is actually more than make-up, and about making women feel beautiful instead.

Mohammad
He seems knowledgeable about the organization, and he draws helpful connections and places where we can find pictures to learn more information. I got kind of got lost in the statistics, but he seems like he knows what he’s talking about.

Donna- Kate Belden (Kipp King Collegiate School in San Lorenzo)
Knowledge is Power Program. I think it was great that Donna chose to do an organization that she personally experienced herself. She brings a valuable point of view that could not be obtained by just reading about it. She was really knowledgeable about the subject and the presentation was very informational.
