Many students in the 11-11:50 AM were wandering in the Quad looking for the class. Normally on a Thursday, we do meet in A-232; however, Sept. 6, 2012, was a special day--we met in the COA Library for an orientation with Professor Jane McKenna.

I hope students found the orientation useful. The cyber-assignment is posted below. Modify it to suit your orientation. Professor McKenna had you look for articles on Nature Nurture not on the subject of our current query, Afeni Shakur, though she did show you how to do this.

You have a choice re: which reference you site in the cyber-assignment. I sent everyone an email yesterday to the peralta.edu account all students have. If you did not receive it, check with Admissions and Records at COA to find out how to access your Peralta email account. This is important.

Homework is to read the chapters assigned and write reading logs and bring your books and reading logs, prepared for the Lit. Circle (include those notes in your log as well).

This is part of the letter I sent yesterday. Included are the Reading Assignment Dates.

Those who needed to catch up on their reading, will be in separate groups. If I think a group is not working out, I might move members to other groups. Students who do not have a discussion or stay on topic will be given writing assignments. On Monday, if students do not bring their notes, such students will have to sit the discussion out and write an essay about the day's assignment.

I mentioned to a group that they could bring their notes in one their phones; however, I have changed my mind. No phones. Too distracting (smile). Bring in typed notes. If you write them out long hand, you will have to type them for the portfolio.

The notes need to be substantive. Include your preparation for the Lit. Discussion. I plan to sit in on groups that are not working to model the protocol before dissolving said groups. Students do not get to chose their groups, if I decide to disband the one they are in.

Reading Homework for the weekend:

Read chapters 3 and 4. Bring the logs for the Preface, Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4 to class Monday. Bring all your books. You need Hacker as well. If you have not taken the MCE 1 and emailed me your score and study plan, do so. If you need to take the exam, do so. Monday and Wednesdays are my office hours in the morning: 9:30-10:30 and after 12:00 noon by appointment.

Chapter 5, Tuesday

Chapter 6-7, Wednesday, Thursday, Sept. 12, 13

Chapters 8-9 for Monday, Sept. 17. Essay Plan is due Monday, Sept. 17 as well.

I gave students a handout with all the essay writing assignments for this semester, the BIG FOUR: Guy, Dyson, Book Report and Social Entrepreneur.

These essays are all 3-4 pages which does not include the works cited page or bibliography. All essays need at least three (3) sources and the fourth asks for five (5).

Two essays include a presentation: Book Report and SE. Both presentations require students prepare an abstract for each student. Both presentation require all students to comment in a cyber-post and that the presenter(s) do a self-reflection for each presentation. This is also a cyber-assignment.

If you are curious about these assignments, just do a search in the blog. It is cumulative and goes back about 5-6 years.

I am serious, and I value your time. We are adults, so I expect everyone to be prepared, on time, and present, not just physically but emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. If you are having one of those days, do a check-in with your group and maybe just listen for a bit before you join the discussion.

When the 11-11:50 class sees me on a Tuesday or Thursday, I have been running since 4-5 AM. I might be thirsty on TTh but cannot drink any water until 11:50-12 noon, unless I remembered to bring water from home.

It is not an easy schedule to manage, so I apologize in advance if I am short tempered or without sympathy for students with excuses (smile). We each have our burdens we bear willingly. Some sacrifices are a choice.

You are in this class by choice. Let make this a fruitful experience for everyone. I gave you my phone number so we can talk, about the assignments, culture of the class, etc. Face to face is better when possible.

In the orientation today we were informed about how to find articles, book, and/or newspapers in the COA library and on the website. I found it somewhat useful because I may need to put it use in the future. I liked that you can possibly widen or narrow down your search for whatever. I also enjoyed that she demonstrated to us as opposed to just handing us a paper and telling us to try it out. The lady who gave the presentation was concise and clear, she wasn’t off topic or just jumping around, she stayed focused to better help us out. I think it was helpful in my opinion, I learned a few things no one ever bothered telling me about when I began college and you definitely need all that you can find when you’re in college.

Hi Riana:

Great reflection. Check the assignment, which is posted Sept. 5, 2012, to make sure you answered all the questions. The reflection is to be three paragraphs.

Again, great start. Post the completed assignment where assigned, not here.

Today in class we went to the library and we were taught how to use the computer to find different resources. Professor Mckenna took us through how it cite what we found and showed us where the books in the library. So of the books in the catalog will give you the information to cite your work, which is very helpful to the students. I already knew how to look up a book, not to the articles I never went that far to search for articles or magazines in a library catalog.

She gave us a the password to view the site at home, I just went to the site to look up something for Afeni Shakur and I found an biography of her and the site was through gale.

( "Afeni Shakur." Contemporary Black Biography. Vol. 67. Detroit: Gale, 2008. Gale Biography In Context. Web. 6 Sep. 2012.) . With the information she gave us today I feel very confident in researching information for my essays. This processes of find this article very easy to find, you just have to read through it to make sure it’s the information that you need.

What I would like to know more about is more ways to cite, and what is the best way to get all the information that you really need for your essays. The things that Professor Mckenna showed me today I will use it in my future research essays. I sent myself an article on nature and nurture and I’m going to read it to see what information that I can use in my essay.

Library Orientation

On September 8th 2012 I went to the library with my classmates and teacher and I have learned hot to access the library from home using the username and password, looking for books, online databases, journal articles and magazines. I have learned how to send informations from the library websites to my personal E-mail,cite my work and how to look for books inside the library with the reference nubmer of the book and that in all Peralta Colleges and I saw that the teacher said that the MLA format in those databases and articles are ture but it is not because some of them were written in more than 2 years ago and the MLA format is being updated every time so we have to make sure it is true and do not just copy and past.

Although we didn’t have class today, we had a library orientation in the library at the L building. We were supposed to meet at the “reference desk” at the beginning of our regular class which was 11 in the morning. This library orientation was basically for us students to learn more information about the library and resources that is being provided for the students at College of Alameda. Since we are in an English class, it would be very helpful if we learned a little more about the resources that are given to us. She even gave us some worksheets to guide us from using the library resources, in case we forget; we have the worksheets as our reference. The person that was giving the library orientation name was Professor Mckenna.

She taught us or reminded some of us how to use the MLA format so that we could cite materials that’s being used in our papers or essays. She even told us there’s a difference between citing a website. Some people think that if they are getting information from a webpage that means they’re going to cite the website as a website. If you’re citing a website, it would only be a website if it does not require any password, but it you’re citing a website that requires password or a specific code, then you would be citing a database. Students would even have access to the library resources at home if they know the username and password. The resources that are being provided at College of Alameda are being paid so it’s very important for us students to put them in use.

We also learned how to look for books by looking at the call numbers. The books in the library being organized that way with the call numbers. If you were to look for a book, first you would have to look at the alphabets and then the numerical. It’s important to always look from left to right, when you are looking for a book. If you want to check a book out, your student ID would be give you the access to check books out from the library. She claims that getting your student ID doesn’t require students to pay for it, it’s free. Then she went on to showing us how to look for articles or books from going on the College of Alameda library home page. It’s important to use keywords to help you look for the certain materials you need. The button “View Entire Collection” means to look for this particular material at all schools, schools including Berkeley, Alameda, Merrit and Laney. Sometimes if you’re looking for books on the book catalog, it’s easier to look for your book if you use the “Subject” option to help you. If you’re looking for an article, make sure you go back to the home page and look for the “Article database” on the side of the home page and click on it. You could get more information if you use the galegroup.com or the biography in context to help you find the specific article you need.

On Thursday, September 5th we went to the L building for and orientation. There we learned how how to use the different resources in the library. Also we were given two worksheets one which explains how to access the library catalog from and the other explaining MLA format. This was design to help us with our English 1A class because it is all about writing and using MLA format.
In addition she also showed us how to cite for books, articles and web pages. In the pass I have realized that citing a web page does not mean I copy and paste only the website, but I also have to include the author, title section, name of website, institution, publication date, medium and the date it was access. This orientation was helpful to me because it taught me things I was unaware of when citing a document. For example how to email an article to ourselves if we want to view it at home later.
We were also showed how to use the school database to see wether the book we are searching for is in the library. If it is in the library we go by the letter then the number which follows it. If it has been checked out or is for library use only you will be told so in your search. It is interesting to me how simple it is to search the database using keywords that mach my search.

This morning we, as a class, went to the school library to watch a Research orientation. Professor McKenna, whom to be the presenter, was informative. She explained to us step by step, the process of how to use the library's database to search for books, articles, and how to share materials with other classmates through email. She also briefly taught us how to cite a piece of work. Overall, this orientation was very educational and helpful to us, as students.
The process to search for a specific book is quite simple as I tried a few times at home according to the handout that was given by the Professor McKenna. Although, the process of login to the database is a bit different between a school computer, and a personal computer. Since I tested the site on my personal laptop. Therefore, the steps are a bit modified.
First, I have to sign-in to the library's database with my last name as the username and my student ID number as the password. After I had successfully sign-in to the database, instead of click on "Book Catalog" like we did on a school computer, I click on "New Search" on the top panel of the site. This was the only modification I've seen so far.

Inverstigation about Racism that is related to"Evolution of a Revolutionary" Book:
First: The author's life:

Jasmine Guy has known Afeni Shakur for nearly a decade, having met her via Afeni's son, Tupac. A multitalented performer, Guy began her career as a dancer for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. She moved to acting and television, however, with the starring role of Whitley Gilbert on the hit series A Different World. During the show's six-season run, Jasmine made her film debut in Spike Lee's School Daze and went on to costar in Eddie Murphy's Harlem Nights. Her other big and small screen credits include Kla$h, Diamond Men, Stompin' at the Savoy, Any Day Now, Linc's, Feast of All Saints, and her current role as Roxie in the Showtime series Dead Like Me. Jasmine is married with one child. This is her first book.
The host of America’s Ballroom Challenge is Jasmine Guy, an actress, dancer and singer whose career has included many leading roles on television, in feature films and on the stage.
Ms. Guy is best known for playing Whitley Gilbert, the memorably spoiled Southern belle in the comedy series A Different World, which ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993. Ms. Guy won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards for the role.
But Ms. Guy actually began her performing career as a dancer. Though born in Boston, she grew up in Atlanta, where her father, Rev. William Guy, was the pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church. Jasmine began taking ballet lessons at age 5 and, inspired by performers like the visiting Dance Theater of Harlem, she went on to study dance at Atlanta’s performing arts high school. At 17, she won a scholarship to join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City, where she spent three years as a concert dancer.
In 1982, Ms. Guy took a leave from the Ailey company to play a dancer on the opening season of the NBC series Fame. The role introduced her to Los Angeles, to television – and to Debbie Allen, the actress/singer/dancer/choreographer who would become a role model for her own multifaceted performing career. Ms. Guy returned to New York but soon left the Ailey company for the stage, appearing as a singer and dancer in musicals like Dancin’ in the Street, Bubbling Brown Sugar, The Wiz and Broadway’s Leader of the Pack.
While working for A Different World back in Los Angeles, Ms. Guy began to land film roles as well. In 1988, Spike Lee chose her for a part in School Daze, starring Laurence Fishburne. A year later she appeared with Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor in Murphy’s 1989 gangster spoof Harlem Nights.
Since completing her run as Whitley Gilbert, Ms. Guy has divided her time between stage and screen. She appeared with Halle Berry, Martin Sheen and Paul Winfield in the 1993 Alex Haley miniseries Queen and laterhad guest appearances on many series, including Melrose Place, NYPD Blue, andFresh Prince of Bel-Air. After marrying and giving birth to daughter Imani in 1999, she returned to the stage, winning acclaim for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in Bob Fosse’s Chicago in performances all across America. Back on television in 2003, she starred alongside Mandy Patinkin in Showtime’s two-year hit series Dead Like Me. She will reprise her role in a movie version due out in 2008.
In 2004, Ms. Guy published “Evolution of a Revolutionary,” an absorbing profile of Afeni Shakur, the mother of slain rap star Tupac Shakur. Ms. Guy is active in many charities, including A Place Called Home, a community safe house that offers food, security, sports, music and educational activities to more than 2,000 children in south central Los Angeles. Among the center’s offerings is a dance school, founded by Ms. Guy and now run by her sister Monica.

Second: The background of the Book:
Afeni and Jasmine story:
Long before Shakur was famous for being the mother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur, she was a high-ranking member of the Black Panther Party and one of the "New York 21" charged by the state with subversive activities. Guy, actress and longtime friend of Tupac and his family, offers a penetrating look at the life of a woman who has struggled with anger and pride, drug addiction, radical politics, and the personal demons of having failed her children in their youth. In interviews over a seven-year period, Guy slowly unpeels the layers that have covered the inner life of Shakur: growing up with a poor self-image, combative spirit, and personal vulnerability that was attracted to the radical politics of the Black Panthers, and a young womanhood filled with drug addiction, domestic violence, imprisonment, and failed relationships. Shakur is brutally honest about her personal shortcomings, the internal politics of the Black Panthers that contributed to their unraveling, her long recovery, and the renewed strength and conviction she brings to managing the entertainment legacy left by her son--Vanessa Bush.

Library Orientation

In today’s class we got to explore College of Alameda Library. Getting to know the library and how the website and catalogs works I believe is an advantage and it’s very helpful and informative. The librarian taught us step by step how to use the website and informed us that we can look up specific books, articles, biography’s and other resources. The website also gives cited information of a book, article ect that is chosen.
This Orientation for me was very helpful and I got more interested on what the library offers. I wasn’t as interested or even went to the library often but the librarian informed us how useful the library can be and I extremely agree. With our school iD we can print out papers with a very fair price or simply print at home without any charge. We can also receive help from any librarian and make our research simpler.
As I visited the website I was amazed on how helpful it can be because we have the ability to type in almost any book, article ect and shows many varieties and citations. For example I looked up Afeni Shakur and showed me many articles. I will definitely use this website for future references.

Library Presentation

The presentation in the library consisted of various important and helpful techniques to research. We learned how to look up articles and books on the topic that we might be researching. As we find the most helpful article we can easily print it out or sent it to our emails. If the book we need is available we can also check it out in the library.
Something I learned that really caught my attention was that different databases are given for free to Peralta College students; from newspapers dated over a decade back, to scholarly written articles. Furthermore, other people would have to pay to view the information we have such easy access to.
I plan to utilize the tool we are offered to. For my essays in this class, I might need to research the author and I will be using the databases to locate some good articles. Also for the final entrepreneur essay, I will be accessing the databases to learn more about the person I decide to write about.
