Book Report Presentations

Today we started the book report presentations. Congratulations to students who were prepared and presented, especially, Bianca in the 11 AM class. Now you are finished and you can relax and enjoy the rest of the presentations over the next two days (11-11:50 class).

Post reflections on the presenters' work. Comment on what worked well. Presenters, post a self-reflection. What worked well, and what you learned that will help you going forward?

In the 11 a.m. class we watched the New Heroes Episode on Muhammad Yunus. Students were also given time to start developing their 5 source list for the Social Entrepreneur essay. Check the assignment sheet for clarification.

Students were also asked to complete the IPS and the outline. The outline answers the same questions posed in the Frontline World assignment. We will do this Thursday, Nov. 15.

Email your essays to me after you present. Include the abstract, your self-reflection and any comments. I thought you might want to keep them, just in case the presentation clarifies something you might want to fix in the essay before submission. The essay is not the presentation.

Self-Reflection

I was able to present today on the book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. If I could do the presentation again, I would change the order of the slides. When I originally made the PowerPoint and had gone over what I was going to say, I thought that the order of the slides was in a logical progression. However, when I actually got up to present, I decided that the order was not one that I would want when I was presenting. As a result, I changed the order right when I was presenting which made it distracting. What went well in my presentation was my ability to present my material using the PowerPoint. I was able to not rely completely on the PowerPoint; I did not read off of my slides during the whole presentation. Instead, I only glanced at it now and then so that I would know where I am in my presentation. From this presentation, I learned that writing the essay and then presenting really helped me to solidify my ideas. By writing the essay, I understood what I was presenting much better, which helped me present with ease.

Self-Reflection

Today I was able to present my presentation on Roasting in Hell’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay in class. To be honest, I was a bit nervous and excited to do my presentation on Gordon Ramsay. I really wanted to share the interesting information that I learned and found out to the class. If I could do the presentation again, I would have talked a bit slower. I probably wouldn’t have brought my note cards with me either when I was presenting. I did not share everything to the class that I wanted to talk about because I thought I took too long with my presentation. What went well was that I was able to make eye contact and talked about everything in order just like the way I’ve planned it. Even though, I brought my note cards with me, I hardly looked that them. I only look at them a couple of times just to make sure I didn’t miss anything important. I was nervous in the beginning, but after a minute or two, I was able to calm down and talked a bit slower. From this presentation, I was able to learn that writing an essay before doing a presentation makes it a lot easier. It helps me sort how what I should present and what I shouldn’t. I also learned that when making a poster instead of a power point, I tend to not look at the poster so often. I was able to remember most of the important details to myself instead of having it on the poster board. I can also be a little more creative with the poster board since I am working on it manually.

Comments on Presenter's Work

Bianca Hsueh

Tuesdays with Morrie
I think you did great on your presentation and you didn't need note cards. You seemed very calm and didn't even read off your slides. You supported your argument throughout the whole presentation.

Pablo R. Hernandez

I think you did really well on your presentation even though you were worried. You explained everything that was on your Power Point very clearly. You used hand gestures and you barely looked at your note cards.

Messi Chaib

Alice Walkers
You tried to explain your points that were on the slide. You gave examples to help us understand your points and what you've read from the book. You knew what you were talking about. You didn't need any note cards either.

Nafi Watson

Impulse
I liked how you related yourself with the book that you were reading. You shared your personal experience when you were presenting your presentation. You spoke loud and clear. I think you did pretty well even without having a poster or a Power Point. You were still able share your argument and talk about some important details from the book.

Keelan Sunglao-Valdez

Charles Bronson
The person you chose for your presentation was really interesting and it really caught my attention. Every slides has a lot of information about Bronson, but you didn't read off of your slides. Instead, you were able to tell us about him based off of your head. You made eye contact and was able to speak very clearly.

Self-Reflection

I believe my presentation went rather well than what I had anticipated. I really like that I knew how to answer questions from the audience which were only two. I like to hope that since I received very few questions that I covered the book really well. By making a power point I was able to actually remember what I wanted to talk about. I actually memorized most of my presentation but I was really nervous entering this presentation which led me to speak a little fast. I had a video with the author speaking about some of the points I was making which I believe was pretty cool. I was thinking of making my presentation on more details which would have made my presentation long. I feel like my presentation was short but sweet. I hope I attracted some attention to the book so some of my classmates can read it over winter break. I could have maybe inserted more pictures so people can see some of Steve’s accomplishments. My first slide was a small background on Steve Jobs and I feel like I could have given more information of him. Other than that I was happy to have my notecards to help me remember a few things. I really liked my power point because I was able to provide my argument with evidence. I had a good audience which helped me with my presentation.

Bianca Hsueh
Great presentation! I really enjoyed it and you presented in a way that I want to read the book now. You had the book memorized and explained everything. You looked very confident and excited to share your book.

Messi Chaib
It was an interesting presentation especially that you had anecdotes to explain your point. I liked that you even related your point to Afeni Shakur. It was nice to see that you had a passion for your book.

Nafi Watson
It was pretty cool to see your connection to the book from your times in high school. I especially enjoyed the section you read for everyone. Your argument was clearly stated which was true in my opinion. I want to read your paper and find out more.

Emily Lam
I liked how detailed your poster was and how everything was easy to read. You seemed very confident in your presentation which was good and you had full knowledge about your book when someone asked you something. I liked that you gave a good summary of Ramsay’s life up to now.

Keelan Sunglao-Valdez
I liked your presentation because it had a really different story. When you described how Charles Bronson lived inside the prison it automatically reminded me of “Hurricane” Carter. I really liked the presentation because you were prepared for all the questions everyone asked and you had the information in your PowerPoint to back it up. I will watch the movie soon.

Self Reflection

I probably should have researched more, and prepared a bit better for the presentation. It went better than I thought it would though, I received helpful comments from the professor and my peers. My presentation was on Wil Wheaton's Dancing Barefoot, which is an interesting book but I probably could have chosen a different book with a more clear cut argument in it. Although the book I chose fit the original guidelines for the assignment, and was extremely interesting to read. A Power Point presentation probably would have been better, but I do not own a laptop and it is much simpler to just talk about the book instead of create a Power Point for it.

Reflections

Davian Grant

His explanation of the books was probably a bit confusing to people who did not already know about the Halo story universe, either the games or the books. Although, his points about colonization and using religion to wage wars was interesting. Mainly his argument was about what makes a novel good, and from his description the Halo novels count as good novels. Since he talked about points which were thought provoking, and keeping the reader interested and thinking was what he claimed all good novels should do.

Sam Everett

A brief summary of the book was mixed into the argument that those who are oppressed by the government can still fight back. The presentation was good, and the arguments were interesting. He did well showing that the government in the book relies on the fear of the people, as well as fears the people.

Wei Zhang

The abstract was somewhat long but it provides a good background of the book Fahrenheit 451. This type of resistance to the dystopian society and government is entirely different than the resistance that Sam talked about for his book the Hunger Games, which is good because this shows the less violent way of defeating a government. Waiting it out. The presentation was interesting, and covered the argument well.

Kovida U

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah is the chosen book. This is the true story of a boy who was forced to become a soldier because of conflict. The theme of this book is that no matter someone's past they can succeed and change. There are are child soldiers in most warring countries, even in America there used to be children who served in wars. Ishmael Beah was able to escape that life and create a foundation to help those who were in similar situations. The presentation was power point and the presenter had actually met Ishmael Beah, which is amazing.

Fermin Carrera

Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days in LA gives insight into the gangs and possible reasons why someone might want to join a gang. Fermin talked about how power corrupts, and about the allure of gangs to teens and kids. He seemed a bit nervous, but overall knew the subject he was talking about and presented well.

Kendra Jones

Big Girl by Danielle Steel offers an interesting story of how parenting affects children. Kendra's argument was that parenting has a huge impact on how people grow up, she included a picture of the cover on the abstract. Also she talked about how the cover of the book ties into the theme, and how the parents in the book damage the life of one of their children, and loved their other child. But the damage from parents is not irreparable, as the main character who had to suffer through the cruel remarks from her parents was able to find support in others.

Wai Man (Remy) Tang

The book the Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter is about identity. Remy's presentation summarized the book and covered how the conflicts in the main character's life led to him questioning his identity. She also pointed out how she felt that the ending of the book was actually the beginning of the character's quest for his identity, which is an interesting idea and probably would make the person who reads the book wonder what happens to the character next. I think the book sounds interesting, and the presentation made me want to read it in the future.

Self-Reflection

I presented The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter in class. During the presentation, I was nervous and I feel I talked too fast. It is a good thing that I wrote out what I wanted to say, but as is always the case, I start out following my script and then veering off from it. The good thing is that I got all the main points across. I feel like I might have stuttered when I was presenting, but I am not sure since I was trying to focus all my attention on getting my thoughts out in logical order. I do not think I did as well as the other presenters, but I was not presenting as badly as when I was in high school. It seems my public speaking skills are improving so maybe I will soon be able to present my script as well as I have written it.

Comments on Presenters

Joseph Carlo O. Tolentino

The Last Olympian

I think that your presentation was nicely done. I read this book before and I think you did very well in supporting your arguement with points from the book. It looked like you prepared yourself very well for this presentation. I was able to understand what you are arguing for. Your abstract is also very well written.

Rachel Avalos

Dancing Barefoot

I was convinced of your arguement that not all autobiographies work for arguementive essays. When you summarized the book, I could not see how they all connected together. It seemed like random snapshots of the author's life rather than a autobiography. But since this book is more like a memoir like Professor Sabir said, I think it would have been a better idea to read his real autobiography before going with this arguement.

Davian Grant

Halo

When I was listening to your presentation, I felt kind of confused. I never read the book and I only heard the name from friends who played the games. I think you really supported your arguement well though because I agree with your reasons for what makes a good novel. The little bit of the summary of Halo's story that I did understand was enough to make me want to read it.

Sam Everett

The Hunger Games

This is a book that I have read before but your presentation made me look at its story more closely. I know this book is about living in a oppressed society but I never thought that the government was actually relying on their people's fear to keep in power. You did a very good presentation and argued very well.

Wai Zang

Fahrenheit 451

Your summary of this book is as good as the one I heard in high school. I liked how you supported the thesis with an idiom and a dictum. Because of this presentation, I learned what a dictum is. You did very well on the presentation and I felt that it was good that you presented after Sam Everett because we could be shown the two different ways to resist a government.

Kovida U

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

I found this presentation to be interesting because I never thought that people would be willing to use children in wars. It is amazing how the author survived his traumatic experience and became such a successful person. I am not sure what you are trying to argue about though. I am guessing it has something to do with overcoming life's hardships and comming out on top since this book seems to support that thinking.

More Comments on Presenters

Fermin Carrera

Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days in LA

When I heard this presentation, I could not believe that there are teachers that discriminate their students. I always thought that people who chose to become teachers love children and really what to help them make it in life. I think the arguement of power blinding people from reality is not a really good choice. To me, it seemed more like depression blinds people from reality. It is mostly when people are depressed that they make bad choices and this arguement is more easily supported than power. If you look at history, those in power, like kings usually shape the reality in which people have to live in. Also, in this book, power that came from gang life was just a tool used to ward off the depression that the author must have felt at that time. I think you did well in trying to support your thesis though.

Kendra Jones

Big Girl

I felt that the presentation was done very well. It really showed good points for supporting the arguement. The arguement was also very well crafted because it allows room for anything that the book's examples can not cover. Not all children will turn out like the kids in the examples because everyone is different in how they can be affected by their parents. I could see that you understood that even as you presented.

Jesse Valdez

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

This presentation was as good as the first one. I feel that this presentation gave me a better idea of what the author was feeling when he had to live through his horrible experience. I think your thesis of people can change is very well supported. Now I feel like I can form a picture of the author in my mind through both presentations about him.

Jeannae Williams

Oprah Winfrey

I was shocked that she had to live through such horrible experiences. This is a very good presentation. Her life story is very well suited to your arguement of overcoming life's struggles to come out on top. Winfrey and Beah can really show that people are capable of success over any difficulties.

Self-Reflection
When I had presented last November 13 2012, I had managed to at least get into my main points. However I had blundered on a few parts and paused for a long while, which is a very bad thing to do in a presentation. Perhaps I should have practiced and researched more about my topic and I could have given more examples from the book. I feel like I had also failed to properly explain the attitudes of the 12 Olympian gods. Although even if I did not present as I wanted, I still felt like I got my intended message across. I was also happy to even be able to talk up front as I was shaking rather badly before class started because I was nervous. My written essay also helped quite a bit so that I would not be presenting blindly.

Comments about other presentations:

Rachel Avalos
I really likes how she managed to show how Will Wheaton looks like as I did not know how he looked. It was also very entertaining to hear Rachel’s argument about that book having no argument as a whole. Too bad she did not include how Will expressed his view for William Shatner.

David Grant
For David, his presentation was confusing but it was understandable as he was doing his duty as part of the Navy. I happen to know Halo and it took me a short while to figure out what his major point was and I still doubt his thesis as I do not believe that there was enough evidence.

Sam Everett
His performance was very enlightening and he did point out a very important lesson in his presentation. True The Hunger Games does have a multitude of topics and lessons, but I believe that Sam managed to choose one the most important ones. Also it was a good thing that while he had a power point it felt like he could have still done the entire thing without the slides.

Wei Zhang
Wei’s presentation was hard to understand. Yes he did point out some valuable information here and there but at the same time the usual interest and life of the book was absent. I barely followed what he tried to explain about the 3 steps of rebellion and his message came out more like the usual “Never Give up” mantra’s that people say but rarely follow. On the other hand I did enjoy hearing about his book as I have read it before and I liked it.

Kovida U
His presentation is touching and it made me remember the child soldiers fighting in the Philippines. It was also interesting how he managed to actually talk with Ishmeal. As a suggestion I would ask him to try and speak a bit louder as his voice may end up murmuring at the end.

Jesse Valdez
One major suggestion for this guy is to avoid using the word “and” so many times in a sentence. But I believe he did better at presenting the more morbid and realistic events in the book. It was very intriguing and nice to hear about how Ishmeal dealt with his anger and his recovery.

Jeannae Williams
Good call on presenting one of the most powerful women in America. It was inspiring to hear how she came to be as a major figure in America today.

Wai Man(Remy) Tang
Among all the presentations and books, I believe Wai’s had gotten my full and immediate attention. It made me remember how I hated it when people tell me to be myself and act natural when I did not even know who I was and what natural is. Before someone can act “Naturally” they need to first figure out what their identities and how different and unique their spirits are.

Fermin Carrera
Power does indeed corrupt and Fermin had given enough evidence to at the very least support this topic. Fermin did a pretty good job.

Kendra Jones
She did a wonderful job at presenting different ways on how parents may treat their children. Her presentation was very understandable and kept my interest from the beginning to the end. It makes me wonder if she had a communications class before.

Presentation Responses

Pablo R. Hernandez

Your presentation taught me more than I ever thought I would ever know about Steve Jobs. I never knew how complex his life was and how much effort he put into his products. I liked how you took used your PowerPoint to help you with the presentation; you did not rely on it which showed that you really knew a lot about Steve Jobs.

Messi Chaib

I liked how you used your own experiences with meditation to explain the main points of your book. It made everything seem more real when you explained it this way. You also included valuable lessons in your presentation and the reason for them which showed us how important meditation is.

Nafi Watson

It was interesting for you to explain how the book was written and how it had a connection to your own personal life. In a way, your personal experience gave the book a purpose and showed to us that the problems that the characters faced in the book are real.

Emily Lam

I liked how you utilized your poster to help explain and show the class visually parts of the book. For example, it was nice to actually see what signature dishes that Gordon Ramsay had. You also had an extensive explanation of why Gordon Ramsay acts the way he did, which shows that you really knew what you were talking about. I also liked how confident you were during the presentation.

Keelan Sunglao-Valdez

Your presentation got me interested in Charles Bronson. I could tell that you were also very interested in him because you did not seem bored during your presentation. Also, you were able to answer any questions that the class had with an extensive answer that furthered your presentation.

Abstract of the Book Report Essay
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
Author: Ishmael Beah

A long way gone is based on a true that narrates the life of the author Ishmael Beah when he was a child in the Sierra Leone. At the age of twelve year old he was one of the 300,000 child soldiers. He was trained by the rebels and hired by the military government to become a child soldier. Finally in 1998, he was invited along with some other children to share his story at the United Nation and was able to leave Sierra Leone and go in the United States. Here he was able to go to college and take a degree in political science.
Now, he has owns a Foundation called “Ishmael Beah Foundation”. This foundation works with the United Nation Children’s Education Fund ( UNICEF ) to help the children that were child soldiers.

Lhadze Bosiljevac
Her presentation was simply fascinating. She managed to discuss a rather morbid subject and turn it into a very intellectual and enlightening experience. However she does often speak quickly and I got the impression that she was really tense, from her shaky hands, to her quick and nerve wracked voice. Honestly I enjoyed her presentation and my only suggestion for her would be to slow down for a bit.

Miguel Chaves
His presentation was very realistic and I happen to commend him on seeing how some peoole that are called ‘monsters’ also have a piece of humanity within them. Sometimes people will be forced to do the most horrible tasks to survive and protect those that they hold dear to their hearts.

Shawn Johnson
Shawn’s presentation was very entertaining. It was rather nice to hear a topic that is not often discussed in presentations. Plus some of the tips are useful…

I missed some of your presentation because I came to class late, but what I saw for the remaining part of your presentation seemed pretty good. I liked that you used your PowerPoint to help you explain your book. I think that it really did help to have something to read while you were presenting as I was able to see if there was any extra information in your PowerPoint that you did not cover.

Stephanie Berrospe

I liked how you were able to relate Luis Rodriguez's life to your own by explaining how gangs had a real impact on the community that you lived it. It shows that gangs are still a real problem that needs to be dealt with today. Also, I liked how you started your presentation with a short timeline of Luis Rodriguez's life because it helped me understand more about how his life turned out the way that it did. Just by looking at the ages that you mentioned in your presentation made me realize how hard Luis Rodriguez's life was after he became involved with the gangs.

Ian Bailey

Your presentation was very well thought-out. It explained the cause and effects of a Capitalist industry which explained why Sinclair wanted a Socialist economy. I also thought that the symbols that you mentioned were interesting. I did not think that there would be symbols in Sinclair's book as it seems like a book that focused on the life of an immigrant working in the foodpacking industry in America. I was surprised that you chose this book because I had thought about reading it before for another class, but I never got the chance to. After listening to your presentation, I am considering reading the book when I have time as I believe that it reflects what is happening in America today with the food-labeling issue.

I think my presentation went well. I spoke nicely and answered any questions that arose. I really think i put my interest into my presentation and projected my interest to the audience. I tried my best to get the audience into my presentation and enjoy it. I chose Bronson because his story is very different and something to remember. Also, because i have a strong passion for his work and life story.

Responses

Emily Lam: Gordon Ramsay

I really enjoyed your presentation. I thought your choice of books and person was very different and interesting. I myself, love food network and the culinary arts, so your choice of Gordon Ramsay really interested me. You also, brought of information on Ramsay that i never knew. Now i know why he is such an extreme chef.

Bianca Hsueh: Tuesdays with Morrie

I missed your presentation due to printing problems, but i did read your abstract. I was interested in your topic and looked a bit online about your book and, protagonist.

Pablo R. Hernandez: Steve Jobs

Your presentation was very informational and interesting. Even from before your presentation, i could see your strong interest in your subject, and that really showed in your presentation. I enjoyed your insight on his personal life and emotions. I never really knew much about Jobs, but only loved his product. I thought the video was a great idea, and thought it brought more information about Steve Jobs to the audience

Messi Chaib: Alice Walkers

I really liked how you spoke about the book and really went into depth about meditation. Also, i liked your connection with Walkers’ involvement with meditation, to your own uses of the method. What really caught me was your devotion to the practice and explanation, it was very strong. The one thing i won't forget would be your conversation over meditation and medicinal marijuana. I think your argument was very strong and made a lot of sense. Although Marijuana is not necessarily a bad thing, I strongly agree with your statement that meditation is naturally from the body and a method of self preservation and tranquility.

Nafi Watson: Impulse

I enjoyed your presentation, and thought your topic was very interesting and dark. I am interested in the authors theme of tragedy and how she portrays them with the lifestyle of the youth. I also have much respect for you, in the way that your used this book and connected it to your own life. That is a strong thing to share, and your interest in the books really projected themselves.

Ian Bailey: The Jungle

I thought your presentation was solid and thorough throughout. It was very direct and answered any questions with itself. You really had a strong knowledge of the history and its involvement with the book.

Stephanie Berrospe: Luis Rodriguez

Your presentation was well planned and presented. I liked your connections with his life events to the book itself. I also liked how you presented his life as the hero’s journey. Towards the end of your presentation, i was interested in your connection with the book and real life gang problems in the bay area.

She did great on her presentation; she went through each point and backed it up nicely. She had a power point and she didn’t have to read off of it. I can tell she knew what she was doing.

Ian Bailey - The Jungle
I think he went through it quick. Point after point after point, which I liked.

Stephanie Berrospe - Always running
Her book really grabbed my attention. Everything sounded so intense and I like how she talked about her friends experience and related it to the book. It made me open my eyes and realize people really go through all that.

Luchanda Williams - The Kite Runner
“The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate how one man’s secret becomes his way to redemption” Men really have their ways around things. Your presentation was awesome.

Merrick Stone - Alice Waters
The one thing that caught my attention was the fact that the famous restaurant is just here in Berkeley, CA.

Jonas Sota - Freakonomics
His presentations main point was crack-cocaine. How it was back then and how much money they made. It was interesting. I liked the presentation.

Tatiana Johnson - The Coldest Winter Ever
Many people can relate to this book, the things they are going through and how they will survive it. She went through each point in the book and explained it.

Self-Reflection

I think my book report went very well and I gave a lot of information about the book. My book that I read was Impulse by Ellen Hopkins. It was about three different teens that ended up in a hospital called aspen springs and they have to end up helping each other to not kill themselves. I realized in my abstract I didn’t talk about the author but I was so focused on talking about the book I forgot to tell about the author. For my next book report I know what I need to do but nobody really gave me feedback on my report or asked question. That would have been helpful to me because I would of saw or heard what I needed to do better.

Average Geek- Rachel Avalos
I really liked the description of the stories from the book Dancing Barefoot. I was able to see the picture the author painted of his life. I would like to suggest that an argument be made though. Even if there is no real argument in the book, sometimes this its self can be an argument. Also one can argue that the many stories from the book represent the author’s life.

Consequences of the Neglectful and Ignorant Parents- Joseph Carlo O. Tolentino
I would first like to point out that the argument made was very strong. I have read the book and would agree that neglectful parenting is a central theme in the story. For this reason I would have suggested that the author stick to the book as evidence for the argument. It seemed that during the presentation, although the argument was integrated through out the whole thing, the book’s evidence was lost and real life examples were introduced.

Halo- Davion
This book had great potential for an argument. The author himself explained the many themes within it. The argument made by the author was that the themes used makes books better by adding importance. This argument is valid, but could have been made more clear to the audience. I also would have made an argument about a specific theme in the book instead of arguing that the book is good.

Presentation Self Reflection
I feel I did an overall good job on my presentation about the Hunger Games. I clearly stated my argument, and used information from the book to support it. My biggest problem was figuring our how to work with a fictional book. All the books we used in the past were biographies. Instead of having to use information from someone’s life, had had to take details from the plot of my book to support what I said. I also believe I could have done better if I had rehearsed more. There were a few occasions where I had to look at my paper to figure out what to say to the audience. I believe I did many things well too. I was sure to make the audience understand the argument. I also used good verbal transitions between slides to make sure everyone was following the presentation. I also feel that I was able to use the plot of the story to back up my argument. Instead of using isolated quotes, I successfully used overall themes and main plot events to convey my point.

A long way gone- Kovida U
I felt that this presentation gave a great background on the topic of child soldiers. Kovida used information from both the author’s life, and his own to explain what kind of things have happened and are currently happening involving child soldiers. I would like to suggest that the argument be made more clear, and have been repeated though. Although the background was great, it did not contribute to an argument.

Fahrenheit 451- Wei Zhang
I really liked the central idea in this presentation about resistance. I believe the argument was about the process of a revolution. I also feel that this book was similar to mine, the Hunger Games. They were both about how people can rise up against their totalitarian government. Fahrenheit 451 advocated a patient and intellectual revolution.

Big Girl- Kendra Jones
I really enjoyed the description of the book Kendra gave. I felt bad for the protagonist of the story because of how her parents treated her. In this case, I would have liked to hear the argument in the beginning because the evidence was broader then the argument.

Always Running- Fermin Carrera
The central argument of this presentation is that when one wants power, they are blinded from reality and the implications of their actions. The argument was successfully made using the author’s life. I would only suggest that this argument be restated through out the presentation so the audience remembers better.

Oprah Winfrey- Jeannae Williams
I really liked the structure of this presentation. The audience was told the story of Oprah’s life, and then at the end, the argument was made. The argument was that you can make it in life no matter what you experience. The audience almost comes to the argument themselves, so when it is told, it is much more believable.

Long Way Gone- Jesse Valdez
Jesse’s argument was that everyone has the ability to change. This was supported using the plot of his book. The author was forced to be a child soldier. He began to enjoy killing. Eventually, he received help and was able to change his personality, and be at peace with his identity.

Stiff- Lhadze Bosiljevac
I do not remember if the presenter specifically told the audience what the argument was, but this is not a big deal because the presenter made it obvious that it was that Cadavers are important to our society and should not be uncomfortable topics. I liked how credibility was given to the book when Lhadze explained that the book had to be reviewed by the scientific community before it was published. There was also plenty of evidence that Cadavers are necessary to our society. I would not change anything about this presentation.

How to build trusting relationships- Shawn E. Johnson
I was not clear on what the argument was. The presentation did however do a great job of discussing problems many couples today struggle with. The presenter also gave a good description on how to improve relationships.

Miguel Chaves
This presentation was one of my favorites. The holocaust can be used as a powerful example for many arguments about the positives and negatives of humanity. The presentation gave a hopeful perspective on the holocaust by proving it is possible to change ones self after he participates in such an event. I would like to also suggest that anyone who was interested in the material of this presentation read Night, by Elie Wiesel.

Gods Big Idea- Abiodun Apata
This was a very good presentation. I really liked the energy from the presenter. I also thought that strong evidence was presented to back up the central argument. I am however unclear what evidence came from the book its self. It would have been nice to find out the content of the book other then the presenter’s argument.

Amanda Lara
I felt that the best part of this presentation was the large amount of support from the text. The book was well explained. The only issue I felt there was, was with the argument itself. I would have liked it to be a little more specific. The argument was that a diverse jury makes a difference. I would have liked to have been told exactly what that difference is.

Self Evaluation

Out of pure honesty I felt like I did a better job presenting than I have before. “Stiff” by Mary Roach was such a great book and I am a science and health person so I felt a great passion in what I was writing and explaining about. Although I tend to repeat words and slur my speech, this time I had control of my mouth and I did not loose my audience as usual. Personally I feel my power point was timely and that my facts were on point, yet I hope for this next presentation I add more life and energy I have to make it as fun and engaging on a not so ‘dead’ topic. Hopefully I can work on walking across the room and providing examples from the slide memorized.

Hunger Games- Same Everett

I liked the way you incorporated politics today and how the people should stand up for what they believe and not be tossed around as a government rag doll. It really opens your mind to if the future would actually hold shows where children would be used as entertainment in violent ways. The story was portrayed very well and I feel like I learned a little more insight. #teamkatniss!

Fahrenheit 415-Wei Zheng

Out of all the morals that could come with this story, you brought out the most meaningful and inspirational points. Such a dystopian society that is shown in the book, yet a trust and collaboration in someone strange, and then a fight to start thinking about what can be done. The fact that giving up comes with time, and with that said to never give up, reminded me of a poster my dad bought and a buddhist saying my mother told me all the time. Great Work!

A Long Way Gone- Kovida U

This book was recommened to me during 8th grade, yet I didn’t have the full interest to read it. But now with insight on what is is about, the story seems touching and compelling to read. I liked your presentation and the fact that you speak to the class not directly into one space. The idea of “power hungry” people really made a lasting impact in my head. Good Job!

Oprah- Jeannae Williams

This out of all was probably the best from the memoirs and autobiographies. For years, my mom and I watched and laughed while watching her shows, sometimes cried. But for her to jump from house to house (when being a woman) made my heart sink because at such a young age she had to grow up so fast bouncing around. And the fact her child died made it even more touching. I feel like you gave a GREAT indepth analysis of the book and I loved your public speaking and outreach with words which made every fact more memorable. Overall, amazing work.

A Long Way Gone- Jesse Valdez

Although you and a previous student had the same book, you highlighted the more factual and rights aspects of the story then more personal and more ideology based thoughts. You quiet at first, but opened up really well and made it an engaging discussion. Good job Jesse!

Always Running- Fermin Carerra

This book seemed interesting when I saw the cover with the large tattoo of the Virgin Mary. Although this book might seem like “another” gang members life, it is more than that. You made the person who wrote it when you presented show a side of normal teen thinking and the safety aspect of gangs that lure many teens every year. To see such a sad past to a bright future, this book seems motivational and an eye opener I must read. Bravo!

The Light In The Forest- Remy

I cannot tell you how many times I have sobbed reading this book. It is a classic and I am so glad you had the chance to read it. You in this book made the unobvious very clear and did a great job analyzing what he was ment to be or what he really was. I loved how you wrapped identity in this and that no matter what race, gender and religion you are, finding your self is the longest journey you will encounter. Well done!

Parenting(Good-Bad)- Kendra Jones
This is a book I need to read. It was great that you tied this with being a mom and how raising a child is hard because there is no “right way”. It is a scary reality that whatever we do to a kid can give completely opposite view points we would never see or look at. The story seemed very well written and I cannot wait to read the book!

The Sky’s the Limit -Amanda Lara

You should be a lawyer. I honestly was surprised how thick and long that book must of been to remember and understand those trials. For your presentation, it was smart to use a poster board which was easy to access and required no setup time. And from all the facts and cases you listed, I feel that you book was something you are VERY passionate about. Great presentation and facts!

Apata- God’s Big Idea

I feel that it was VERY brave of you to bring religion up as your topic. Personally, I don’t have beliefs but I felt your message was very strongly given to our class and you have a great way of occupying space with your voice and body language. I felt that your lesson in that you were a creation that was already in God’s will was a new way to look at life and from the moment you are born, you have the ability to finish God’s big idea: Ourselves. What a great way to tie motivation with religion. Great work!

Good Presentation and I did learn some amount of information about the nation’s law. I do agree with the white men comment. Most of them are so ignorant and stubborn that it makes a bad name for ALL males like me.

Abiodun Apata
The presentation honestly felt like a sermon that I have in churches although it was rather fast paced. The presentation was okay but to put it bluntly, some ideas were unclear and the choice to make colonization as part of God’s idea made me uncomfortable. I really, really don’t agree with the colonization example and how some of them can parallel to God. I do believe in the one God but it was hard to concentrate on his message when my mind kept wondering to the ridiculous oppressors who use God’s name in vain like all those nonsense about not being created equal.

Jonas Sota

It was interesting to see the expenses described in your book as it made your points easier to understand. Also, the way it was presented was easy to read and thus easy to understand. Your explanation of the author’s background helped to support the evidence you presented as it showed that the evidence was supported by credible research.

Tatiana Johnson

I liked that you were able to explain how the book was able to relate to life today for people who are involved in the drug scene and live in poverty in the ghettos. Your thesis was expressive and the summary was well thought out. It pretty much summed up the whole book for the audience.

Luchanda Williams

Your summary of the book was very extensive and goes into all of the small details. I have read “The Kite Runner” before, so your summary of the book really refreshed my memory of the plot of the book. I also liked that you were able to compare the movie to the book and recommend one over the other.

1. “Average Geek” Rachel Avalos
I think you did a good job giving a brief explanation of what your book is about and it really seems interesting to read. As you were talking about your book, I believed that there was an argument that can be taken out of your book as you were explaining it. Keep in mind that there will always be an argument that can be taken out of any book. It can be either simple or complicated. But overall, you did a good job.

2. “The Hunger Games” Samuel Everett
Sam had a really good argument and I really liked how he broke it down through out his presentation. Sam had a good thesis and I really liked how in every point he had to say, he tied it back to his thesis. As Sam explained his book, it sort of inspired me to go and actually buy the book so I could read it myself. It goes to show that he did a good jib explained his book with great clarity.

3. “Along Way Gone” Jesse Valdez
A long Way gone seems to be a good book to read when I heard the explanation that Jesse Valdez gave. I now intend to read this book because of jesses argument. I believe that people are able to change if they have the will to. Jesses had a great view of what was going on in the book he read which made his presentation seem very interesting.

4. “Halo” Damian Grant
I am a fan of the Halo series, not the books, but the video games. This was the first time I hear that there are books written about Halo and they seem very interesting when Damian was explain the book that he read. He had a good thesis of what makes a good book and I definitely agree with him on what makes a good book. After listening to him speaking about the book it made it clear that Halo contains the criteria for a good book.

I have never read this book before because I am not interested in these certain type of topics but you caught all of my attention when you compared the gods and their children to parents who work a lot but are not able to give their children a lot of attention. Many people do not understand the affects of parenting and how it can have great influence on their child’s life. Great presentation!

I know that reading random chapters from someone’s biography can be a bit confusing because you were not able to come up with just one thesis. But it was great how you were able to put the pieces of his life together by reading this small book of his life. I liked how you were able to tell us about his current life activities as well. Awesome presentation!

Davian Grant

Halo
I never read any Halo books but I have heard about the video games. I find it interesting that you have read all of the books but there are different authors for each one. It is also interesting how Microsoft choose authors to write their books. Very great presentation!

Sam Everett

Hunger Games
Resistance is prevalent and someone or two people taking a step against their government is mind-blowing intelligence. I watched this movie but your presentation gave me a better insight on this book.

Wei Zhang

Fahrenheit 451
Very thoroughly abstract, which provided me a lot of background on your book and topic. I was very inspired by your thesis because you made a point that, it does not matter what situation you are in and how inferior you might think you are, and you can always find ways to resist. Very great incorporating
lessons into this your presentation.

Kovida U

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
Kovida I loved how you choose this book because just like you Ishmael has a testimony and he was able to escaped the harsh realities of his country. Many boy soldiers are not able to escape the life that they are forced to live. Also, very interesting that you met him in prison. Inspiring and touching book.

Fermin Carrera

Always Running
Very great presentation. What stood out to me was that you related this book to your life, which is wonderful because you were able to present with passion and connectedness. I found it interesting that the main character said that the people look up to the police officers in his country opposed to how many people view police officers in this country.

Kendra Jones

Big Girl by Danielle Steel
Kendra’s presentation has really influenced me into wanting to read this book. Her topic, parenting, is quite relevant to one of the themes in Jasmine Guy’s book. Good parenting or bad parenting whether intentional or not has a great effect on the child.

Great presentation!
Wai Man (Remy) Tang

The book the Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter
Very interesting book and you presented it well. The main character in this book who is searching for his identity is parallel to many immigrants of this country, which is everyone, because they are trying to find who they are in this new place while keeping ties to where they came from.

Jesse Valdez

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

Very good presentation just as Kovida’s. Kovida’s presentation touched on who the author was and the activism work he is doing today and you touched on the book and his journey.

Great presentation! The holocaust is a subject that I love to learn and talk about because it was a horrible event that occurred to some many people for inexcusable reasons. I was shocked that the doctor had a change of heart when it came to Holocaust prisoners, very interesting. This subject gives me the chills and it was great that you were able to present this.

Shawn Johnson
Hill Harper is a fascinating and great writer. His books are life lessons that many men and women should read more about. Your presentation was very interesting and comical. Relationships can be very helpful to some people and can turn out detrimental for others. Your presentation showed that when a problem occurs in your relationship you should be able to solve it maturely. Great presentation!

Amanda Lara

Very great presentation. Discrimination in the prison system has been ignored for years but the government and there has been many books written on this subject. These men cannot be unnoticed, which is very easy because there are many layers to the criminal system that quite intense to unfold. I think it is great that you shined light on this subject, which is very relevant to my topic.

Abiodun Apatah

I must come here you preach at your church! Your presentation was very powerful and you were able to get your point across through many examples, such as colonization. Great presentation, and the facts were nice to have and that you understood the trends. You have a great understanding of the situation that African Americans come from. As well as your sincere thoughts, you brought hard reality that they have to face. Plus the places you can go for those jobs were great at the end!

Punishment and inequality in America: Antionette Armour
This was a very strong presentation. The best part was that there were a large amount of statistics and historical facts relevant to the argument. I would have liked to have heard how the war on drugs contributes to inquality.

Paul Tough- Makonnen
I liked this presentation because I have an interest in the material that was discussed. The social programs that Paul Trough designs are important because they eliminate inequality efficiently. I was unsure what the argument was though. It would have been helpful if that was made more clear.

Freedom of Speech- Virginia Tan
The central argument of this paper was that slaves did not have freedom of speech. This is a very easy point to argue because it is definitely true. Many examples from Harriet Tubman’s life were presented to argue this point. I would say this was a successful presentation.

Acid Dreams- Gabe Shalaby
The main point of the presentation was that the government shouldn’t be trusted. This was argued by describing how the government was the first to experiment with the drug after its discovery. Before the drug was well tested its effects were not well known the CIA thought that the drug could improve performance. I would have liked to hear more of a connection between the argument and the evidence.

Today I present my book “Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad.” I will my presentation a four out of five. At the beginning I was a kind of a bit nervous when the computer shut down on me. I was a bad sign to me but I think my presentation went pretty well. Except for the moment when my throat was dry, I have to stop for a second. Mostly, I got everything in my head already since I read this book twice. The thing I’m surprised is that I was able to calm down after a while I started. I love that I got a copy of the PowerPoint with me so I can take a look if I forgot anything. One more thing I’m glad is I didn’t go last if I was the last one I will be super nervous; and saying things in the right order. Well, I shared mostly the things that I cover in my essay. The things I have to work on are rehearing a few times and try to drink more water before presenting.

Self Reflection

Today I presented my book report on Acid Dreams in front of a live audience for the first time. I'm a terrible public speaker and I know it showed. I felt all red in the face, I choked a few times, I couldn't really face the audience, maybe next semester I should take a debate class or something. It's not that I wasn't confident in my knowledge, I just don't really like people and I get very uncomfortable when the focus is on me. If there was something other than this I wish I could do better it would be to add more structure to my presentation. It would help to print note cards or maybe just pull a full on power point presentation. I did rush through my presentation but that probably in all honestly helped me get through it easier. It was a valuable experience.

Jeannae Williams

Jeannae presented to us a book about the life of Oprah Winfrey. I had absolutely no idea that Oprah had such a hard life, I mean I knew she had to have loads of experience in order to understand and solve other people's problems problems the way she does. Rape, neglect, lame family life, the works. I really like how Ms. Williams really seemed to know her subject inside and out. She never once glanced at her abstract or book and maintained contact with the audience, keeping us engaged, the entire presentation. She seemed like she really enjoyed the subject and cared deeply because she projected emotion and lively-ness into the content of her presentation.

Jesse Valdez

Here is yet another example of the skill I envy so. During basically the entire duration of his presentation he maintained eye contact with his audience and didn't really have the need to look around or glance at notes. That's an awesome thing because it shows that you know your subject inside and out and it keeps your audience more engaged because we feel like you are talking to us and not reciting programmed information. If there was any area to improve on I could only think of one, maybe it's just that we're in an early class but it seemed like you didn't care much about your subject. This isn't an acting class, a speech class, or anything like that, this is an English class and you got you're point and info across in a great manner.

Ferman

You seemed to really know the book you read and maybe even more background info on the subject from outside sources. You seemed to care not only about how his past was similar to that of many in similar situations and there was much to learn from his publicized struggle. You also seemed to care about his redemption and what that meant about his work ethic, commitment, and general good heart. It seemed the emphasis was put on his current activity as a social entrepreneur. I had never actually heard about Luis and it was cool to hear who he rolled with and who he's become. The only thing I saw which could use improvement was maintaining eye contact which is probably the hardest part of public speaking.

Remy

You're book Light in the Forest seemed to be the classic coming of age identity story line shown in a grim spot light. You seemed to know the story and all of it's little twists without revealing every step of the way. It seems like an interesting book, if I read more I would consider it as one of my next books.

Wei Zhang

You're presentation was very interesting. As I mentioned in the previous review I don't read much in my spare time but I am actually thinking about buying your book. It struck me as the most interesting book reviewed in terms of what I might read myself. I liked that you related certain points to events in your life.

Kovida

I like that you had a broad world perspective to bring on your personal experience. Burma, that's heavy. It is very cool that you also got to meet the author and subject of your book. Sierra Leone is a rough place and child soldiers have a rough life. You seemed to care about the events of his life and that's always a plus when presenting.

Kendra

That was a heavy story. No matter what she did she was never right in her family's eyes. It's disgusting how often that subject is brought up these days. Even to hear just a summary of someone's self being shattered like that by the one's they hold dear is disheartening. You seemed to care about you're subject and related to it because you yourself are a parent. You did peak at your notes a few times but at least you had notes! Your presentation seemed very linear and structured and that is great.

God's Big Idea, you sure did care an awful lot about the subject of your book. You went from humble and quiet to booming and animated. Being a pastor I'm sure you already know this but you are a great public speaker. You have a good presence, loud voice, and passion. You definitely read your book.

Rachel

A book of five separate Wheaton vignettes, that sounds pretty cool. For some reason I really like the idea of Shatner being an ass to Wheaton. I also like that you chose to present this book instead of the other book you mentioned Just A Geek. It seemed to me more interesting and personal for whatever reason. You seem to know about Wheaton outside of this book which definitely helped in your presentation. I don't think I'll be reading the book but your presentation was entertaining and informative.

Davian

I did not know all that about the Halo books being written by multiple authors in a revolving order. That's a pretty cool practice. You're very knowledgeable about the whole Halo mythos and that for sure showed in your presentation. Until you explained this book the idea of the Halo book series seemed kind of lame to me but you have actually sparked my interest.

Miguel

You chose a dark dark history to present. The Nazis are as interesting even today as they were horrible. There's a global obsession even today with Hitler's army and for good reason. Not only were they arguably the most brutal and villainous real life political force to ever exist, but they were also some of the most out of the box and productive minds ever to touch the practice of science. Without the Nazi's we might never have developed a great deal of the technology we utilize today including our little trip to the moon. You had a great power point presentation and seemed to have really paid attention to your reading as well as maybe done some outside research. You had great examples of their brutality but also great examples of the scraps of humanity some of them clung to in such an awful time.

Sean

Your review was a nice light hearted vacation from the heavy and often dark subjects that most of us chose. You seemed to really understand and pay attention to the text. For some reason when you presented you reminded me of Will Smith in Hitch, maybe it was the power point. I liked that you had chapter by chapter break downs and added a little humor and almost theatrics to your presentation which kept your audience captivated.

Antionette

I really liked your "about the author" section. You really seemed to know your subject which was the unfairness of the legal system, specifically prison. I'm all for your presentation, you had a great structured power point. You could have faced the audience a little more but that's a tough thing to do. You seemed to have some outside knowledge other than your reading and even had programs listed to take up time and straighten out youth.

Virginia

Your Harriet Tubman presentation had a lot of good information. It's too bad you had the little hitch of shutting down the computer, a little jolt to the nerves before the public presentation. You faced and addressed the audience very well. You had a nice summary of Tubman's life even up to her selling produce door to door as an elderly woman.

Makonnen

You did a very good job of interacting with your audience, you made eye contact, spoke clearly and loudly, and cared for your subject. It's cool that you had the chance to meet and talk to Jeff Canada. It's great that you seemed to know what to do with your hands rather than fiddle with the notes or book or put your hands in your pockets. It made sense chronologically, was very linear, and very structured. great job.

Lhadze

You had a great looking power point, you had loud voice, an excited tone, and a good overall presence. Your subject was an interesting one and an important one. I think everyone should be a donor on their license and donating your body to science when you die is a noble cause. I didn't realize that auto manufacturer like GM use real bodies in safety tests. It was cool that you had so many fun facts in your presentation and you made a subject which many would deem grim fun.

I believe I presented well when I presented my book. I love the topic that I presented and I could have talked all day about my book report. I also liked how everyone was very attentive and seemed as if they understand the subject that I presented. Very respectful audience. I learned that I should have been more organized because I was kind of all over the place.

Self-Reflection

Today was the day I presented my book report to my fellow classmates as well as my instructor Sabir. My overall J.O.B I feel as if I did a very great job. I feel that I could have done a little better by elimenating some of the..( and ummm) talk. I am work in progress, so when it is all said and done I will be greater. I really enjoyed the book I selected being that I am on the path of becoimg an Entrepreneur it relates to who I wanna become.

KOVIDA U:
In his presentation I learned about who a child soldier is. A child who is eighteen and attached to government armed forces or any other regular/irregular armed forces. Over all great job because I learned something.

WAI MAN (REMY) TANG:
I enjoyed how she explained her book. From my understanding of her presentation was about; the search for an identity and betrayal of his tribe (Conrad Richter) is now left w/out a identity. Very good job of explaing your book.

FERMIN CARRERA:
I enjoyed listening to his book report presentation. He explained his book well and was very knowledgeable of the information he was giving out. The guy who wrote the book is a survival soul of gang days in LA. Good job!

SAM EVERETT:
He did an outstanding job and discribed his argument very well. HE was well prepared and in his presentation he taught me how we should not surrender our rights as citizens. Good job!

KENDRA JONES:
She did a outstanding job on her presentation. I totally can relate to what she was presenting because I have a child of my own. She was well organized and well prepared. Good job!

JESSE VALDEZ:
His tesis was great and well descriptive and Jesse did a great job! at presenting his book repoert. Good Job! Jesse.

WEI ZHANG:
Look like he read an intresting book. I didn't really ever catch the argument of the book , but he described his book very well. I like how he suggested for one to not give up! he was very creative as well with his china words; Dictum & Idiom. Dictum-Truth behind it and Idiom-Habbit.

SHAWN E. JOHNSON:
I really enjoyed this yound mans book presentation because it talks about relationships are and what's worth having and holding on for. And I agree to Shawns abstarct. I need all the advice on relationships so when my prince charming comes along with a good heart I will be well prepared. Good Job!

ABIODUN APATA:
She did a very outstanding job with her presentation and explaining what she knew. It was so well presented it made me think to wanna just become cadaver when I become deceased. You are headed to something wonderful and that presentation of yours showed it. Good Job!

Your book seems pretty interesting. You explained everything on your power point without having to always look back at it. You described the book really well and was very detail when describing/ talking about your book.

Tatiana Johnson

You did pretty good. You didn't seem to be nervous and was able to speak clear when presenting. You gave a brief summary with basic and major events that happened to the main character of the book.

Stephanie Berrospe

I think you did a really good job on your presentation. You were really calm and explained a lot about Luis without reading your Power Point. You knew what you were talking about and knows a lot of background information about Luis. You even relate yourself to him and showed us that you understood where he was coming from which helped you explained your points really well.

Merrick Stone

Spoke really loud & clear. You were able to explain some of the major events about Alice Water, but still read the Power Power point throughout the presentation.

Ian Bailey

Explained presentation really well with details. You've made eye contact when presenting your presentation. You didn't need any note cards and you kept it simple & got your main points through.

Luchanda Williams

I think you did a pretty good job on your presentation. You took the time to explain the main characters. You talked about his early life and the main events that happened to him. You seem to know a lot about your point so when you presented your presentation, you didn't need to read off your power point and you looked very confident.

From this presentation, people can learn how scared the death is. That is means the suicide rate will reduce if more people read this book. It is a great book which has an actual effect for our society.

Gabe Shalaby (Acid Dream The Complete Social History of LSD)
There was a statement that gave me a strong impression “Don’t believe the government” His presentation just tell me the government always lie us. It is the truth! But people in China have no courage to attack the government in public.

Antionette
Another trenchant argument in the America, the most impressive thing she presented is “nearly 1.5 million Americans in prison; one out of three black men will experience in their lifetime” what a terrible situation! Our government have to consider how to deal with the highest incarceration rate!

Virginia Tan(Freedom of speech )
The American society was changed to freedom and democracy. But in China people have no right to say what they want to say! Pitifully!

God’s Big Idea
In God's Big Idea, Dr. Munroe described God’s intention to occupy the earth with the culture and custom of heaven. He intended to extend His kingdom to earth. The fact remains that the world is being ruled by idea either of dead or living men. The ideologies that serves as the basis of this world like religions, government, social and civic institutions are built on ideas especially of dead men: Imperialism, monarchism, socialism, communism, democracy and dictatorship are all born of ideas cultivated, incubated and developed by men who though long laid rest still live on in the practice of these ideas in our modern society. God’s plan for us can be seen from the creation of Garden of Eden. Jesus Christ also made God’s big idea obvious by teaching us to pray as follow; Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. How great will it be if we can understand that we are God’s big idea? We being on earth is never a mistake but God’s big idea

Book Report Presentations

Makonnen Richardson

The book titled “Whatever it Takes” by Paul Tough looks at the subject Geoffrey Canada and his social program to aid poor schools. Makonnen talked about the credentials of the subject, and the background of the social program. He also went over what the purpose was, and how the program might help public schools in the future, or at least parts of it might. The ideas for reforming schools to give lower class children a chance at the future seems to be successful, since at the very least the testing scores of the kids went up significantly. I think that it would be interesting to see if this program makes an impact on statewide public schools in future.

Gabe Shalaby

His presentation on “Acid Dreams the Complete Social History of LSD: the CIA, the Sixties, and Beyond” by Martin A. Lee & Bruce Shlain was succinct and to the point, he was able to work well within the time limits of the remaining class period. The book he picked was about LSD and how it was used and tested by the government, perhaps as a potential biological or chemical weapon. The book Gabe picked and the examples he gave are perfect for his argument about not being able to trust everything the government tells you, since they used people as unwitting test subjects and compromise peoples rights.

Antionette Armour

Her presentation was about racial profiling and unfair representation of minorities. She also talks about how the book she chose gives alternatives to the current criminal justice system, and how the war on drugs was somewhat of a set up. As well as the fact that putting people in prison does not always lead to the decrease of crime. Antionette chose this book because she knows that there is a possibility that her relatives may become another statistic in the justice system which has been biased against minorities; in addition she has studied the subject the book she chose covers before. Overall the presentation was good, and she was knowledgeable about the subject.

Virginia Tan

The book she chose “Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad” is about the lives of slaves in America's past and the Underground Railroad which was a secret society devoted to freeing slaves. She enjoyed the book, and describes how life was horrible for the slaves and how they had no hope. Her argument was that slavery is terrible, and I agree that it is, and that it is fortunate that America outlawed slavery during the time of the Civil War. Virginia talked about how the slaves did not have nearly the same freedoms as we have now, and how they were mistreated. Her power point presentation went well with her argument and with her book, showing information and pictures. I thought it was interesting that the slave holders were afraid of their slaves, which was probably part of the reason why they treated the slaves so horribly and reacted so extremely to them talking to each other or to white people. The presentation was very well done.

Self Reflection
Presenting and talking in front of a group has always been difficult for me. This book report presentation was not any different. I was very nervous, the only thing that helped was that I had read and understood the book very well so at the very least, I had the information inside me. I am proud of myself for not completely freezing up. There was a point where I forgot to give an example but the professor was nice enough to remind me. My presentation was perhaps a bit short but I feel I got the point across. I have never been one for words, so prolonging my essays and presentations is very difficult. If I could do it again, I would try to add more details and maybe some more slides to help my audience stay connected with me.

SELF REFLECTION

Today I did my class presentation on my book report. I did not use a power point but decided to use a poster with pictures that describe my author and book. I find it more entertaining or capturing when the audience can see visionary abstract to help picture things. Some of the photos included a picture of the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse; the author Lise Pearlman; black panther logo; pictures of Huey Newton and Fay Stender( Huey Newtons attorney). I was able to use trials from the book as long as quotes to describe my book. I would recommend some of the early trials of the book as a class reading because it is entertaining plus it shows the importance of the rights that we have now and how we should exercise. One of the questions asked for me by one of my piers was how important was to show up for jury duty after summoned. I answer the question by showing how important it is to have that right as well as you can get a warrant for arrest if you don’t show up.

Average Geek had the argument that not every book has a argument. I like that because she thought outside the box. It is based on five different stories so it was hard to just pick one. Overall she did great and I appreciated the photos of the Author. Especially since I have seen some of the films he was in.

Hunger Games is a very popular book series, I thought the presentation was great especially how the power point explained the book and he included his thesis.

the importance of responsible parents, I agree with the presentation. It is important that parents watch after us and guide us. If our parents to take care of or show us support we will follow bad influences.

Kendra Jones
Parenting: Good and bad. I loved how she put the picture of the book cover on her abstract, a picture of a girl licking a spoon and how it ties in the book. A lot of parents play favorites with their children in my opinion and it hurts the other child or makes them self conscience. Argument: parenting style has an affect on a childs development. Seems like a book I would read.
