For the 9-9:50 a.m. class, post your responses to the freewrite and to They Say, 14:1 and 14:2 below at the link.

Also, students are missing too many classes. I will check the policy in the College Handbook and post it here; however, there are students who have not attended class for two weeks consecutively  Just today, there were students who were here yesterday and absent today and vice versa. Everyone is not ill or taking care of a sick parent or off drilling.

Homework is to read the four essays in 50 Essays (last week and this week combined). Should I give pop quizzes and change the syllabus so that those who are prepared do not suffer? If students do not step up, I am speaking to 9-9:50 specifically and everyone this applies to generally, then I will start giving quizzes on the readings which will not be able to be made up and count significantly towards the final grade.

We have a library orientation next Wednesday, Feb. 20, 9 a.m. with Professor Gerstle in the library. We will meet there. Put this location in your calendars.

Response to Free Write

The term happiness tends to be synonymous with joy in many peoples minds. They see happiness as a way of living as suppose to a feeling. However, the few people that are happy say that they make themselves happy. On the contrary, the author of The Happiness Project, Gretchen Ruben stated that when one feels energetic it is easier to behave in ways that make you feel happy. It’s very hard to stay happy because there is so many people that want to bring you down. For the truth is there are many good reasons why people should stay happy. Perhaps the best reasons are to improve your self-esteem and encourage charisma. In this essay, then, closely examining ones happiness is a clear path on why everybody should sustain happiness in their everyday life.

In the introduction to “The happiness project” by Gretchen Rubin provide templates designed to staying happy and maintaining good self-esteem Specifically, Rubin argues that the types of happiness they offer is exercising early. As the author themselves put it, “regular exercise boost energy levels” Although some people believe that exercising can cause fatigue and discomfort, Rubin insist that feeling energetic one is more likely to behave in ways that will make you feel more happier. In sum, then, her view is that being happy one can make better decisions for the long haul.
I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend are great For instance, she realized that she wasn’t going to be happy unless she made a change In addition, Rubin talks about having to many choices can be discouraging. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that having it “your way” can is the best decision. Yet I would argue that they are wrong and people teach what they need to learn. Overall, then, I believe happiness is a great accentual to an everyday life--an important point to make given that Rubin had a wonderful life she just wished she realized it sooner.

Assignment: Free-write-what songs…albums would you use to score your happiness project?
My happiness project would play the sound track of the Buena Vista Social Club as the introduction to my project. I would add in soundtracts from the following artist throughout my project: Santana, Priscilla Ahn, My Morning Jacket, Lady Antebellum, Jesus Culture, Hem, Florence + The Machine, Dave Matthews Band, The Civil Wars, Bon Iver, and maybe The Black Keys just to name a few. I believe that this type of music would play well for my happiness project which might not be viewed as happy at first, but the over-all view of my project would show the joy from fleeting moments of happiness.

Assignment: They Say/I Say(14.2)
In the introduction to “The Happiness Project”: Gretchen Rubin states that keeping your resolutions can change your life. Specifically, Rubin notes that when you identify what brings you happiness, your resolutions are easier to identify. In sum, her view is to make a commitment to yourself to change what you want to accomplish.
I agree. In my opinion on what Rubin writes about is true. For instance, if I want to change my behavior regarding not reacting to something, I need to change my perspective. In addition, I would have to remember that others will not change just because I am changing. Yet I would argue that people are more likely to reflect the behavior that is being presented to them. If you are angry, they will be angry, if you are happy, they will be happy. Overall, then, I believe that identifying what brings me happiness can be made into resolutions of changing my life.

The term "Happiness" tends to be synonymous with "joyful" in many people's minds. People view happiness as a medication to ones brain and body eliminating all negative emotions and thoughts. Although, happiness isn't viewed through everyone, one can always find other ways to be happy. Nonetheless, many people find it hard to be happy due to life experiences, adversity, society, ect. In all honesty, there are many reasons why one can be happy, such as having great family and friends that surround them. In this project, examining happiness goes to show that one can truly be happy if they set that goal and achieve it.

In the introduction to "The Happiness Project" written by Gretchin Rubin provides templates designed to encourage people to practice being happy. Specifically, Rubin argues the types of happiness one can do, which is to make a list of goals. As the author her self put it, "MY TWELVE COMMANDMENTS". Although some people think Rubin is crazy, but she insisted that she wanted to be happier. In sum, then, their view is that having great energy at all times leaves the person in a positive mood, which definitely boost his/her happiness.

I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the author recommends are great for people's everyday lives. For instance, exercising daily. In addition, Rubin recommends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, if you don't have access to a gym. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that exercising can be tiring and prevent people from having energy afterwards. Overall, then, I believe exercising can boost one's happiness because in my opinion, "If you look good, you feel good"---an important point to make given that Rubin recommends in her happiness project.

The soundtrack I would play for my happiness project would be songs from SNSD and Sistar. The reason why is because they are very inspirational to me as a Korean. People all over the world love to watch them perform and sing for numerous reasons. It makes me proud and motivated to be who I am.

In the introduction to “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin provides templates created to bring happiness upon one self. Gretchen had stated that “Nevertheless, I was astonished by the charge of energy and satisfaction I got from creating order.” When we have duties that require much attention and time, it’s at times hard to remember what we are doing the task for. In sum Gretchen states that once you figure out a structure for your life, what is important then motivation will come with it. I agree. In my view in chaos, nothing works properly. For instance, when we concentrate on many things instead of focusing on the task on hand we may grow stressed and lose focus of what we need to accomplish. By giving only 15% of our attention to something that requires 100% things do not turn out the way we envision it to be. Some might object, on the grounds that working under pressure helps them achieve more. Yet I would argue that focusing on what is important to us would motivate us, and give us more energy.

In the introduction to "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin, she talks about how the book is intended to change your life in a positive way.
Specifically, doing things that can improve one's happiness through various little things such as getting more sleep by making your room as dark as possible or using the 1-minute rule to take on lingering tasks.
As the authors themselves put it, "I didn't postpone any task that could be done in less than a minute. Rubin also insists that exercising regularly can improve happiness by giving you more energy. In sum, her view is that if you reward yourself for doing this task though, it can backfire. In her case it was her dad who made it a task she had to do everyday in order to paint her room. This made running a drag for her. Some might object that rewarding yourself gives you an extra push to complete the task while you're in the process of doing it. Yet I would argue that exercise is something that isn't even that difficult to accomplish and everyone should just run instead of walk. Overall results will show you will get places faster and stay fit.

Oh templates.

The term happiness tends to be associated with wealth or material objects in many people's minds. They see happiness as something that can only be obtained by people with enough wealth or fortune to buy their way to it. However, happiness is a lifestyle that can't be bought. On the contrary many people find happiness in those around them, rather than the objects that they surround themselves with. For the truth is that emotional investments are worth more to people than monetary ones. This essay, then, through closely examining the lifestyles of happy people will show that happiness is not determined by one's financial state.

The term “happiness” tends to be identified with success for many people. They see happiness as a key factor in life. However, very few people see success as a happy journey. On the contrary, as Gretchen Ruben writes in her book, The Happiness Project, that the journey of attaining success is what you make it to be. For the truth is that there are great results from being happy. Perhaps the best reason is happiness enhances your life: emotionally, spiritually, and physically. In this essay, then, people who identify the key factors that create happiness are more successful in their life.

The term "happiness seems to be synonymous with "joy" or "wealth". Most see happiness as something that comes naturally or something that can be bought. Something that is automatically set up in your system. However, few people would admit money brings you happiness, because most would argue that's not true. On the contrary, most teenagers about 20% of them will experience depression before they reach adulthood. For the truth, happiness can only be found in ones inner desires. Perhaps it is family, or a hobby or even your pets. In this essay, then, closely examining a regular persons life would prove that even a person who has everything and nothing to complain of can be at a lost in search of happiness.

If ever there was an idea custom- made for a Jay Leno monologue, this was it: In order to get a good night sleep and get a fresh start on the day Gretchin Ruben needs to have a very specific bedtime setting. So specific, that in this modern day and age she needs her bedroom to be completely dark and quiet. The only problem is there is only so much she can control. Isn't that like ironic, that in order to be happy she needs so much control of the situation?
Whatever happened to going with the flow and letting life take its natural course? I happen to sympathize with anyone who does not have the resources to create such a perfect setting and lifestyle for themselves, though, perhaps there are ways to obtain the resources.
