They Say, Exercises 1 (pp100-101)
What a surprise, as I read a few articles it was clear that the authors should have read this chapter on “So what? Who Cares?” There was one articles, Hard Times for Black Colleges by Michael H. Cottman in the May 2014, issue of Ebony pp 36, that made me realize how important it is to answer those two questions of “So What? Who Cares?”
In the articles the author points out that, George Cooper, PH.D., who was appointed by President Obama to oversee the White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities had his work cut out for him. Cottman does a great job painting a picture that showed the sad state of affair that the HBCUs face because of low enrollment and the lack funds.
By speaking directly to the alumni you are clear who his audience is and why. He gives a great deal of information on the president plan to invest a great deal of money in the system while developing a number of different strategies to attack those issues. This is where the author fell off the wagon when it come to answering the question “So what? Who Cares?”
He never gave any historical facts about the HBCUs which was formed to educate former slaves who became a part of the, "New American." He never pointed out that people like Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize-winning author, graduated from Howard University with a degree in English in 1953, Colbert I. King who earned a Pulitzer Prize during his tenure as columnist for the Washington Post and Evelyn H. Hammonds earned her first degree in physics from Spellman in 1976, she went on to accumulate degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institutes of Technology and Harvard. In 2008 Evelyn H. Hammonds became Dean of Spellman, her alma mater. They are but a drop in the HBCUs bucket of graduates who have made a contribution to society. A case could be made that if society lets this great group of schools go down the drain, it stands the chance of losing one of the nation’s most value resources, "an educated mine", and it is said that, "a mine is a terrible thing to waste."

Essay 1 (Paragraph 7)
. I viewed Rubin's book like I viewed some of those, “how to lose weight” diet books. They claim that if you follow their road map you will find happiness by losing weight, keeping your resolution not to eat white bread while lower your calories intake and drinking more water. They emphasize that you can change your life by making small changes in how you eat and relate to food. I don't take those kinds of book seriously; therefore I could not take Rubin's book seriously.
My point here is to point out to the readers that Rubin’s book is more like the mapping of many of the lose weight quick books and you should understand that just by thinking thin, that action won’t make you, “thin.” These books can make a readers feel good when they start out on that weight lost journey. The reader is led to think that if they drink more water, as Rubin claim in her book, they would feel good, lose weight and the road is paved with gold (happiness). The reader quickly sees that as the journey continue it becomes harder and harder to reach their goal of losing weight. Anyone who takes the road map to weight lost seriously, should consider the other factor that affect how they lose weight such as your metabolism (how your body burns fat), and the fact that you might be predisposed to something that might keep you from losing weight such as your DNA makeup.
My over all essay is to point out that Rubin didn’t realize that culture has such a great impact on how people view happiness. She was leading many of her readers down a road much like the weight lost books that many like me have come to know just don’t work by cleaning out your closet and drinking more water.
