Today in class we looked at Martin King III and his willingness or unwillingness to accept the job he was assigned by his mom at 11 when his dad was killed. The essay in John Blake's Children of the Movement, looks at these tough choices a man who seemed most unlikely to succeed proceeds in life when his face and his name leaves him no other choice than to accept the path he was given.

In the early class we met in the Writing Center and first discussed the essay looking at themes, then addressed an argument from three sides: the thesis or pro argument, the antithesis or con argument and the synthesis or conclusion. Many students hadn't read the essay, so Rudy, Angel, Rajiv, Sushil, and Dominique shared their composition. The task was to compose three paragraphs: 5 sentences each, one a supporting direct quote from Blake. Given the short span of time (20 minutes) I think the composition: "11 Years Old Forever" was impressive and all participants get a VERY GOOD for the effort.

We decided to meet in the Writing Center (L-235) again Wednesday, February 6. We might just make this our new spot since it's warm and cozy. Let's talk about this more, tomorrow morning. Don't forget 2/7 and 2/11 your assignments will be cyber ones. We will not meet in class. I will also post information about "Sonny's Blues" and give you a copy to read. We will meet again Tuesday, 2/12.

Students who weren't able to complete the essay in a group setting, post it here.

The students in the 9-10 AM class were great! Most had read the asignment in advance and the compostion this time was expanded to include an introduction. We read through the segments twice, the second time through each component as tighter as the class had had the opportunity to learn from each other.

I have to say though, that the antithesis was excellent, and the conclusion was so well done, it was as if the students had written the entire essay themselves, so well did they incorporate the key elements of the discourse on "Martin King III lives off his father's name and reputation." We will write another essay tomorrow. The essay is "Ben Chaney and Angela Lewis: Brother and daughter of James Earl Chaney."

Again come to class prepared. On 2/17 on Channel 9, 12 noon to 2 PM on the finale of the Eyes on the Prize series, the program will address the murder of teh three Civil Rights Workers, of which, James Chaney was one.

Eleven Year Mind in Fifty Year Old Body

Martin Luther King the third had to be the man of the house, after his father’s death, although he was only eleven years old he knew he had of responsibilities and was the one to watch out for his family. Martin Luther King the third says “so at eleven years old, I was trying to fulfill that mission, whatever I thought it was, not necessarily knowing what it was”. He was concerned about everything, closing up the blinds and making sure doors were locked.
Even though he is now older he still does what he used to do as a young boy. Martin Luther King the third said “I still do the same things.” Martin is the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference the same one his father led when it was vanguard of the civil right movement. He was also elected president of the SCLC in 1998. Everyone agreed with what Martin said. “When Martin came to the table, he brings more when he sits down then most of us do, by him being a king.”
In 2001 SCLC’s board chairman suspended Martin for seven days and threatened to fire him. I believe Martin was probably tired of having responsibilities since he was eleven years old. Although his childhood was stopped at an early age, he still plays basketball, Friends say he was a good jump shot, jokes around, and likes listening to contemporary jazz and gospel. Martin Luther King the third has a good personality, “In person, forty-seven- year old Martin is a big man with a soft, boyish voice. Broad shouldered, thick in the torso, with a salt-and –pepper beard, he is polite and deferential.

Martin Luther lll: Son of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King lll: Son of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., which appears in Children of the Icons, written by John Blake was an essay that relates to me in so many ways. My father “died,” to my mother, and like Martin, I was delegated the “man of the house” role. Just like many males, in a single mother household, Martin wanted to live his own life; not the life his father left behind.
Martin the third is a man who, as a child, had visions of his own mission(s). Even though, he hasn’t found it, as it is express, “Martin admits that he’s not yet found the role that would capture all his passion. His father found it, but he himself is still looking,” (Page 100).
I believe Martin is happy with the attention he gets because of his name, and who his father is, just not satisfied. Happy meaning, fortunate, content, please, or joyous; while satisfied being, make happy, pay what is due to or on. “Martin [is] an ordinary guy, with an extraordinary name,” which is stated by Martin childhood friend, Ross (Page 98). Because of his name, Martin lll, and his father, he makes the majority of his earnings today. “Martin [tours] the country as a public speaker making as much as $100,000 on speaking engagements…” (Page 99).
Martin Luther King lll is honored and privilege to be “Little Marty;” he just only wants what his father, Martin Luther King Jr., wanted for people of all kind. Their very own dream!
