Alehouse and Praise Song for Learning Communities Cyber-Posts

Today in the early class we reviewed the first Pidd essay, then students who hadn't completed the assignments were given an opportunity to do so. Only two students had books, so they were able to begin the section on verbal and prepositional phrases (53-67). The next section looks at pronoun agreement (70-85). Essay 2 is on page 86-87. We will complete Essay 2, by next Thursday, Feb. 19.

Tomorrow we will run the checklists on peer essays, assign a grade and give the justification to the professor. If students have too many substantive errors, then they need to be referred to me for a consultation. Be honest in your critique and if there are questions get another classmate to read he paper also, and see if her results are the same as your findings. If you don't agree, refer it to me with a narrative describing the process. I will give you rubrics tomorrow also.

Look at pages 302-303 for MLA style student papers. Complete the exercise on pages 304-305. Read up to page 308. We'll run through the Works Cited exercises next week when you come back.

If you haven't already done so, complete the paraphrasing package (330-on). I think I ended on page 347. Complete the review (347). We will practice signal phrases in our freewrite and in our response to each other's essays.

Alehouse
In the second class we were able to read poetry from Alehouse, because most of the students had the book. After we read poems from pages 30-38, ending with a reflection on keeping a notebook (also the title of a really famous essay by Joan Didion, students were instructed to reflect on the imagery, writing or other poetic devices which elicited certain discernible responses either emotional or intellectual they wanted to share. I also stated that sharing lines they enjoyed or reflecting on the reasons why they liked the poem, understood it...was also okay.
Post your freewrites.

On the Martin King essay, I'd like you to read it and in your presentation Thursday, speak about the types of love and how your object fits into this scheme.

Reminder: Next Wednesday, you have a presentation. We will make the presentation on Thursday, Feb. 19, instead, because we have library orientations for both classes, 8-9 and 9-10 2/8. We will meet in the library with Professor Steve Gerstle, librarian.

I am pleased to see so many students meeting together in study groups. Three students visited me today in my office. One was lost. I encourage all of you to join or form a study group. One of your classmates was sending his posts to the wrong blog for the past six weeks. Now he has to re-post everything.

Cyber-Post
Those who are in study groups talk about why they work and what the tangible benefits are.

Rebecca Evans Eng. 1a 9-10 “free write” notebook and “AleHouse” response 2/10/09

A notebook is a powerful tool. The process of writing is a great friend, stress reliever, and leveler of issues and problems at hand. I currently keep a journal. I Occasionally I will refer back to my old journals and laugh or cry at what I wrote but more than anything they are my history. A notebook or the keeping of a journal or log can enable one to maintain a sense of balance and peace. When I write I can let my feelings and imagination flow. The power of the written word is one of the strongest and most influential devices in our realm of use. A difficult situation, interaction, or emotion can be settled by drawing, journaling, or chronicling in a journal. For me taking a break to sort out my thoughts before reacting has proving time and time again to provide positive results in my relationships with others and my relationships with myself.

A suggestion for anyone interested: next time you get very angry or upset with someone instead of acting out, write them a letter, put everything in it you want to say...the catch…Don’t send it! But see how much better you will feel.

In reading Alehouse the authors were able to chronicle their emotions and evaluations through the written word. I found a connection to the poems on pages 30-38 to be of fragility. “Seeing Right Through” by Anna James is a concrete poem creating the silhouette of a woman. She states, “I am ashamed of my bare breasts of my bare slit flesh”. Woman of today have a difficult time embracing their bodies. Women are meant to have curves and to create a healthy and nurturing soul for a child.

In most fashion and women's magazines the focus is on an ideal of beauty that is unattainable. Most models make up less than one percent of the human population when it comes to their size! In addition, each one has a staff of people to transform her into what the final photos resemble: designers, make-up artists, photographers, lighting specialists, and photo re-touchers.

“In small naked things” Laurie Junkins compares a woman’s body to the fragility of a bird, “Her hospital gown falling off one shoulder, she is a baby swallow in the bed, all bones and chicken skin. There is no nest to tuck her into, no keeping her from breaking herself”. Women are portrayed to be fragile and delicate. For centuries even before written history woman have been taken advantage of and demoralized. Women have been demoralized and in turn have begun to demoralize themselves. We must come together to promote positive body image and self respect!

Reflections on “Black Feathers, White Bones” by William Keener.

The vivid description of the barren expanses in this poem brought back memories of being in The Rift Valley in East Africa. While I was there I would sit for hours and watch the gazelles roam across the savannah, and the hyenas that lurked hungrily on the edges of the herd. This poem reminded me of my contemplations on those days about survival, and wondering what life must be like for creatures living in such a harsh world.
I also felt deeply connected to the last part of the poem where the ravens imagined how great their world would be if they had more ability.
It reminded me of being a little boy and watching my brothers boxing. I would watch them spar and think “If I was that strong, no one could stop me”.
I enjoyed this poem very much and it has inspired me to write vivid recollections of my past.

Poems Reflection
Mating Rituals By: Jackelyn Hoy page 30

This poem is broken up into three parts. Which reminds me of the three first steps to a relationship: the meet and greet, the first date, and the first night. In the first par, the writer refers to a couple that are outside conversing. He convinces the girl to go to dinner with him, or a, “first Date.” I infer this because most guys want to make a good impression and for a first date they will almost always take you to a very upscale restaurant. Most of the time the majority of girls will go with you on a first date if you name the Cliff House as opposed to In – in Out. I like the fact that this girl is not giving him her full attention, she is trying to play hard to get, eating and trying to keep otherwise occupied while he talks.

The next part of the poem is the dinner setting. He must have taken her to a good place, if she is eating caviar, and coffee. The whole point of the restaurant scene is to get to know him and decide if this is the beginning of a relationship or just another bad one night stand. You can see her thoughts turning this way as she compares the caviar to the copulating of toad eggs. This crosses every girl mind on the first date.

The last part is the end of the night, the after dinner kiss. This kiss has two ends it can either be the sensual beginning of the night or an abrupt end to the guy entirely. Hoy talks about the lure of a mate, that primal sense of need. The girl has preened hours in advance to make sure he takes notices, he has in turn, taken her to the best his money can buy all in anticipation of this moment of truth. Well she does test the waters in a kiss and finds them to be, “ A grain of Rice in a Black Bowl.”

Reflection:
Having a notebook is a good way to write on it everyday. Some people like to write a reflection of what they experience that particular day. Many keep a diary and write about challenges that they feel are important. Having a notebook is also great to write down your assignments or anything that you feel is important. I know people that like to write songs base on things they see or feel in a particular moment. A notebook is a great place to put your thoughts, feelings, and ideas so later in life you have a chance to look at the way that you used to think or feel.

The poem that I seem to enjoy was seeing right through by Anna James. The reason why I like the poem was because of way that the poet wrote it. He wrote the lines very weird. Although I did not understand the poem completely, what I understood made sense. The way that the poet wrote the poem is very weird, it’s writing in a shape of a keyhole.

Reflection on Notebook...

When I said that I kept a "notebook", I was referring to my classwork, then I realized that I indeed keep a notebook. It is a tiny hand sized, 80 sheets for which I write my Bible scriptures in every Thursday during Bible class. It's some real good information as to how God wants all of us to live and then there are passages that I looked up for some of my friends that didn't believe one way or another, and asked me to find the answer in the Bible. Some still had their own versions or interpretations of what was said, but that's alright; when it's all said and done, everyone will have the same understanding on that great day.

Free write on Alehouse Poem...

I didn't get to write much and I am now going on memory cause it is late or early in the morning and I am sooo sleepy. The poem was about the birth of a baby chick with wrinkled skin and only God knew where his mother was; comparing right down to a daughter being concern of a mother who had become sick and possibly died and left her alone to mother.

Rebecca Evans eng 1a 9-10 student response to Hassan 2/11/09

Beautiful writing once again! When did you travel or live in Africa? It is amazing how much we take our survival for granted yet when one thinks about it we are truly helpless creatures. We are so lucky and blessed to have all the modern day gifts and technology. It is sad to think of those who are so far behind and without the basic necessities for a healthy life. However, I can not dwell, I must put my hand out there and help to promote change!

Free Write on Notebook and Alehouse Response

Notebook is a really important tool and it is really helpful as a uses of reminder. I have a few personally uses notebook and notebook that are use in school. In many cases, it helps to keep you on track of stuff. I believe each word that is been written on the notebook are the words that are expressing by someone. Certain people are scared to show their emotions. Often, notebook helps to get their feelings out.

Freewrite on an Alehouse poem...

The poem I choose to reflect on is Allison Joseph's "At First Glance." The way I interpreted the poem is as a description of a man. I like the way Joseph starts the poem '... extend your metaphor"(34). "Extend your metaphor" to me means if you are a man do not come to me with a lame line like, "You must be tired, because you been running through my mind all day." A man should approach a woman with something she can sink her teeth into. I also believe Joseph is talking about love. Not a pure love like agape, but a carnal love like eros. Words like "scintillating", "pastoral", "silence", and "jubilation", are both discriptive and contrasting(34). These words open your mind to a vivid world.

Alehouse Poem

I wrote about the poem “Mating Rituals” by Jackelyn Hoy. This poem is about the interaction between a woman and a man and how they make a love connection. It’s not so much the words they speak, but it’s more of their body language. There is a comparison for the male with a bird of paradise who uses his feathers to attract the female.

Notebook is a very useful tool. But I use a notebook only to write down my homework so I won't forget my homework. My cousin uses her notebook everyday she writes all the things she did on her notebook. When I read her notebook it was fun because it makes makes me remember good old times.
I don't remember the poem name because I don't have my book and I read it in class. The poem was about love. How males are trying to get female attention.
