In the article “Bilingual Education vs. English Immersion,” the author, Kenneth Jost, asks the question which style of teaching is better for non-English speakers to develop cognitively as well as academically. There has been a heated debate going on since the 60’s over what teaching style is best for non-English speakers to catch up academically to fluent English students. According to the article, one-tenth of the 50 million public school students are not proficient in English and 80% of those students speak Spanish as a first language. These growing numbers of students need to be taught English fast so that they do not fall behind fluent English students in their academic studies. The debate is whether bilingual education or English immersion is the most effective style for these young students. Each side of the argument claims that the statistics back their side, but the real startling fact is that most students entering school who are not proficient in English, fall behind in their studies and never catch up. Some pro-bilingual educators believe that the English immersion method is too focused on getting kids to learn English that they do not develop cognitively like the fluent students. The opposing side on the other hand believes that bilingualism is “ineffective and politically divisive.” (Jost) Arizona Superintendent of Instruction Thomas Horne says that people who support bilingual education, “aren’t interested in teaching the kids English, but want to maintain a separatist nationalism that they can take advantage of.” This seems a bit extreme to me, but it does seem interesting to teach someone English by speaking Spanish. According to research, it takes 6 to 7 years for a student to be proficient in English at an academic level. Current programs mandate that an ESL student must participate in 4 hours of English studies outside of their everyday classes. This pullout program receives some negative feedback, saying that if students do this they have a higher likely hood of graduating late. English immersion is another method used that has received criticism while at the same time; statistics show it has shown progress in many cases. A network of 8 charter schools named Uno, in Chicago, uses the English immersion method for its primarily Spanish speaking students. A study by pro-English Lexington Institute shows that “English learners at UNO schools score higher than their counterparts from other Chicago schools using bilingual-education.” (Jost) The debate goes on whether any of these methods are truly effective or if it’s time to come up with something new. The main focus is the students though, and one thing is for sure, academics are more important than ever no matter what language you speak.

The Article I read was on the Taco Bell dog that passed away in july, it's very old but I believe a lot of people were unawear of the doggy having to leave us after all the years we admired him on television. The dog was a spokes person and made younger kids around the world respect dogs more to a certain degree. giget was the dog name and she was cremated and her ashes were retained by her trainer.

Summary of Article
The article “Guardian waiting, hoping in Haiti” by Angela Hill is about how a women that is trying to adopt Ruth and Naomi from Haiti is now having problems. Her and the girls survived the earthquake and are living with a YWMA group. Chews sister would like her to come back, but Chew will not leave without her children. She wants the girls to be free and away from the country that they were born in.
Many people past away during the earthquake, and now the country smells of death. These people need medical help. People in Haiti are hungry and thirsty but they have not been able to receive the help that is needed. Some that have survived are now having to be single parents.
Chew believes that the attorney who was going to help her with the adoption has past away or worse the office has been destroyed. Chew has put some much work into this adoption that she would not like to begin all over. A lot of help has been given form her sister. People like Chew would like to help children and take them to the U.S. Waivers are being given to these people and this is helping people that had been in the process of adoption.
Right now the most important thing is for the orphans to get a new family. Some of the children have received visas and are being put in homes until a family is found for them. The amount of children that are orphans have increased a great deal after the earthquake.
Chew would like for close friends and family to pray for her and her girls. That also includes other families who would like to start life new with faith. They would like for their country to be like it was, for them to be as they were before mentally, sacredly and psychologically .
Personally the people from Haiti have been through a lot. The children that are orphans should be found a home where they can have a family. All the people deserve to have a better life. People around the world should help by donating anything that they can. We have a lot more than is needed and the people now have to start from scratch. I know that I am going to donate what I can and will pray that all gets better for them. It is good to help others because we never know what will happen to us.
The article I chose to read is "Ethiopia committs genocide and Eritrea gets Sanctioned," by Thomas C. Mountian. This article is particularly interesting because there's no research or evidence shown proof why Eritrea was sanctioned. This happened rather recently. This article calls out the CIA. The reason for the sanction was because the CIA believed that Eritrea was sending arms shipments to Somalia. But where are they? There's no proof but the UN/USA can sanction Eritrea either way because they have that power.
The article states that the UN has violated their own charter several times. So much, that they can't even keep up. Now they have chosen to violate the independent country of Eritrea in the Horn of Africa. While Ethiopia is committing genocide on their own people. This particular decision shows the UN's "distortion of reality." In conclusion, the UN/USA has sanctioned Eritrea because they say, with the support of the CIA, that Eritrea has been helping supply arms shipments to Somalia, but yet, there us no proof that this has even happened. Even with the little evidence, such as a registration number for the aircraft, it was discovered that the aircraft was registered to a Russian arms dealer who has a long history working for the CIA. This shows how these sanctions put on Eritrea are unfair and unjust.

The whole article is about the negative impacts new advanced technologies can have on humans if not used carefully. The article interviewed a man named Scott Jerome-Parks. He went under to much radiation which caused him to turn deaf, a little blind, and with some of his teeth falling out.
The article explains how this new technology-radiation- is not being both used properly and monitored correctly. There are many cases about too much radiation on a patient that goes on undiscovered. Also many nurses or people controlling the amount of radiation going into the patient are often trained incorrectly. The article explains that although new technology is beneficial and extremely helpful, it can also be very dangerous if not monitored and used correctly.

A recent national study based on blood test results collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2006 showed that high colesterol has become increasingly common among young people. High cholesterol is a major risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes and diabetes. Though previously associated with the middle-aged and the elderly, high cholesterol levels are now appearing in late childhood and the teenage years. The study showed that 20.3% of participants between the ages 12 to 19 had at least one abnormal cholesterol or lipid level, with more boys affected than girls. Overweight and obese teenagers were more at risk, but many with a normal body weight had unhealthy levels of cholesterol. Dr. Ashleigh May, leader of the study expressed concerns. May wants to ensure that doctors recommend regular lipid screening and lifestyle changes for young people especially to those who are overweight or obese.

Since the Earthquake in Haiti, many people are "coping with fear and uncertainty." Ancelot Jean is one of many Haitians that lost much from the earthquake, although he was lucky that his family was safe. Him and his wife Rosalaine Dolce care for six children, two of which are orphanes of Dolce's late sister. They, as well as many others are now living in the Haitian capital's central plaza. Food, a concrete house, clean clothing and safety from thieves are some of many things families like Jean's worry about at this time. The Haitian government has plans of relocating 400,00 to temporary housing. In addition, the United States and French government will be sending "tents for 600 families, food and latrines." This is great, but it still may not be enough for the overpopulated country.

In the National Geographic article about saving resources and money. It featured a new idea from a Dutch company called, Spranq, they’re idea is called Ecofront. They’re idea of conserving resources is by creating a new type-face font. The font features regular, Font legible Verdana-like font, but with large circles cut out of the middle of the letter. Thus it saves less ink. The negatives which were pointed out by a Font scholar, Frank Romano. He sees the Eco front as a ‘gimmick’ and also states that it will be hard on ink-printer jets. Hopefully more inventions like this in the future will happen more often.

Despite such widespread destruction — and an incalculable number of deaths — almost no one on Avenue Poupelard seems to let himself cry, not even the children. Grief is still buried under shock, and there is a stoic determination to face the future because, no matter how tenuous, it is far less frightening than the immediate past. It is daunting to imagine the recovery that lies ahead. But in this one pocket of the city, as elsewhere, life of a survivalist sort goes on.

Despite the huge damage and uncountable number of deaths, neither nether men nor women on Avenue Poupelard give themselves a chance to weep because of the disaster, not even the kids. The sadness is remained covered under the calamity, and there are a strong intention to look forward to the future, because no matter how soft it is far less terribleness than the immediate past. It is frightful and overwhelming to think about the refreshment that is coming to them, but people are getting better and living from day to day as many people in other places.

How Computer Viruses Work (Summary)
By: Marshall Brain
Introduction To how computer viruses work:
Computer viruses are mini computer programs that infect your computer. computer viruses are not new, they have been here for a while. Viruses are capable of destroying a lot of information along with financial information.
In january of 2004, computer nerds predicted that around 250000 computers were affected by the Mydoom worm. Another virus named Melissa made Microsoft and other big corporations to shut down their e-mail services until the virus could be destroyed. The ILOVEYOU virus was invented in 20000 and it was just as destructive as the Mydoom worn. In 2007, 50 millions computers got affected by another virus called Storn.
The most common computer infections that you will hear the most are:
Viruses: viruses are malicious programs that infect computers by attaching themselves or by someone else to useful software.
E-mail viruses: programs that move from e-mail to email and they replicate themselves by sending themselves to the victims contacts.
Trojan horse: Tiny malicious software that makes you believe that its a program that you want to have but in reality it’s a virus.

In the article “Run, Brett, Run! Favre fresh out of miracles in NFC Championship loss,” by Joe Posnanski; on Inside The NFL. He describes Brett Favre’s play action of his past games and most recent game he’s played. Favre is one of the oldest quarterbacks to play this season. He previously played for the Packers for many years then moved to the New York Jets and now presently played for the Vikings. Favre playing with the Vikings and took his team to the 2010 season playoff.
Posnanski describes how Favre is a quarterback that is seen by many as a focus, on point guy when it comes to play football. His main focus in his mind about the game is winning. He knows how to play the game well even though he’s 40 years old, which makes him a veteran to the game. The only issue or problem Posnanski points out is Favre just is not the running type of quarterback. He could have the field open, clear to run but he just will not go for it. He claims that Favre has miss big opportunities of gaining yard because of the open field.
In Favre last game of the 2009-2010 season, he played in the playoff game against the Saints of New Orleans. This game was a very good game, since both the teams did their best. The only thing that Posnanski saw is that due to this fear Favre has stuck in his head of not running the ball to get some yards. By not running the ball I mean Brett not taking the ball himself to try and get a touchdown, make a 1st down or just simply gain some yards to get a first down. He pretty much gave up on this game. Posnanski claims that Favre’s didn’t give it his all and focus on trying to win the game. Due to that the Vikings lost the game, and are not going to be able to go to the super bowl. Even though it seems that you could yell at Brett to let him know to run the ball and gain some yard for a touchdown that could win the game. Brett just did not run and due to that the Vikings will not see a super bowl this season.

The article I read is about a 15 year old girl named Eva Uhlin. She has an extremely rare side effect after taking acetaminophen, which is the cheaper alternative to Tylenol. She took the pill after she had a a fever and a viral infection while she was on vacation with her family. Her face skin began to peel off, and as it got worse she went to the hospital. The doctors recommended that she take even more acetaminophen to help her condition.
She went back to the hospital the next day with many blisters on her face. She told Msn Today’s Matt Lauder Wednesday, “It was a nightmare to just feel my skin fall off.”
Dr. Jeanine Downie, a dermatologist said, “It was the virus plus the drug. It was just her genetic makeup that led to this horrible reaction.” The side effect that she experienced is called toxic epidermal necrolysis, which only affects one in a million, she was a very rare case. 40% of its victims die, and it causes at most 30% of your skin to fall off, she was very lucky to survive.
Today, four years later, her skin has healed physically, but her allery will stay with her for the rest of her life. If she takes Tylenol or any generic brand of the pill, her second reaction would be worse and possibly kill her.

The article I chose was Full Body Swimsuit Now Banned for Professional Swimmers by Kristina Wong. The article comes from ABC News website. The article was about the new racing swim suit that came out before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which was worn by most swimmers, being banned from professional swimming worldwide. The suit is made of neoprene and polyurethane, the same material used in wetsuits; the material makes the suit more buoyant making swimmers lighter and more aerodynamic, causing them to have less fatigue and therefore swim faster. FINA, the International Governing Body of Swimming, issued the regulations on the suits and put them into effect on the first of January this year.
The suit was worn by Michael Phelps and many other swimmers in the 2008 Olympics, where multiple world records were broken. Since the Olympics about 200 world records have been broken. Many people don’t find it fair that records were broken by swimmers wearing the suits and are happy for the ban. Speedo, a lead manufacturer of swimwear, released a statement saying they are in support of the ban and that the suits have “cast a shadow over the sport.” Even though Speedo is in support of the ban, many people feel that the swimsuit manufacturers are the ones to blame.
People now question if the ban came too late for the integrity of the sport. Christine Brennan, a veteran sports journalist, said that “it is very sad that the governing body of the sport failed to make decisions for the integrity of the sport.” She feels that the pace at which the world records were being taken was causing the sport to become a joke. “Anyone in the sport that had their eyes open could tell something was wrong.” Brennan also said that the suits have “rendered the record book worthless”, and “they have no one to blame except themselves.”

http://www.howstuffworks.com/street-gang.htm
In the article titled, How Street Gangs Work, Ed Gabrianowski explains how street gangs function after massive research in different communities. Gabrianowski begins his article by giving a brief explanation of why teenagers join street gangs or might even just affiliate themselves in gang activity. According to Gabrianowski, there are four main reasons why teenagers join gangs, “Poverty, Peer Pressure, Boredom, and Despair.” Gabrianowski discusses how street gangs are mostly found in urban areas, whereas rural areas.
Before getting into much detail about how street gangs work, Gabrianowski gives a brief history on how street gangs started. In his article Gabrianowski mentions the most historic violent street gangs of L.A., the famous Crips and Bloods. Gabrianowski makes is clear how it’s a never ending war with the two rivalries, which to date continues to run the streets of L.A. The results from the two gangs have been a shower of crimes and murders committed. Gabrianowski wanted to put his point across that street gangs don’t only affect the lives of those who are in them but the community as a whole.
Gabrianowski also talks about the important roles that drugs and firearms take in street gang life. Most street gangs if not all associate with the use of firearms and the distribution of narcotics drugs as a fast source of income. Drugs are very important because most gang members don’t have reach to a descent job, that turn to drug trafficking as an easy way to make money. He also shares how most street gangs target youth because those who are in higher power within those gangs want kids to do all their dirty work such as trafficking just for the sake of not getting caught and sent to prison.
After examining street gangs for several years, Gabrianowski shares his solution on how to bring an end to street gangs. He makes it clear that stopping gangs will not be an easy task to manage, however the outcome will be worth the struggle. Gabrianowski suggests having activities in communities to help keep the youth busy and out of the streets. He believes that helping gang members find decent jobs and have access to an education can make them leave their gangs to create a better future for themselves. Gabrianowski gives an example of a program called, “Weed and Seed” that has helped gang members get opportunities to get on the right track. According to Gabrianowski if more programs like these existed, it would help minimize street gangs all over the world.

Salvador Cabañas, star player for America, was shot Monday morning in a bar in Mexico city and has been stuck in a coma with a bullet lodged in his head. Cabañas began his career in the Mexican soccer league (FMF) in 2003 and has become one of the most prolific goal scorers of the entire continent. This came as a huge surprise to the country as there are still no arrests pertaining to this incident. Mexico president Felipe Calderon has issued a letter of sympathy for the cabañas family. The Mexican authorities leaked a security surveillance tape where Cabañas is seen entering the bathroom where the incident took place with a few seconds after a man following him into the bathroom, which is believed to be the individual that perpetrated this act.. The individual was identified as Jose J. Balderas Garza, known as "J.J." or "the Model," who was a regular at the bar.

The article that I chose for the paraphrase was an article I found on yahoo, when I was signing into my email. It was an email about Osama Bin Laden, which always catches my eye, because he still hasn’t been found, but is still somehow causing attacks and havoc in this and many other countries. .
The article that I read was about a failed terrorist attack on a Detroit airport. A man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had planned to detonate a powder in his underwear as the airplane he was on was still on the tarmac, but he could not detonate it.
This failed terrorist attempt forced TSA to increase their security at the airport and also at other airports as well. This simply shows how easy it is and can be for someone to carry on an explosive to a plane.

Seventeen Types of Guys
“Your Field Guide to Guys” published by Josh Aiello features 17 types of guys that you might meet. The 17 types are: the sexy foreigner, the hobbyist, the coffee shop intellectual, the workaholic, the pickup artists, the surfer boy, the life coach, the cowboy, the man you thought was gay, the man-child, the undercover hottie, Mr. Selective memory, the passionista, Mr. Jealous, the sensitive rocker, Mr. Right, and lastly the prepster. The Guide contains information as to what type of girls these guys are interested in and a generalization of what type of guys they are.
The sexy foreigner has a unique and fashionable sense of style and is probably a smoker. With his sexy accent and perfect hair, the sexy foreigner knows how to treat a girl as well as make your ex boyfriends jealous. The hobbyist is friendly, talkative, and loyal to his significant other. He is known to some by the “Wine Dude” and speaks in a way that only other hobbyists can understand. The coffee shop intellectual wears mostly black. He may be seen in a skinny black jean with boots on. He is into Karaoke bars and girls that can inspire him. He hates fake girls.
The Workaholic has a crazy desire to earn money and probably works 90 hours a week. He courts women by buying them jewelry. The pickup artist prepares for a date by predicting every move. To him, dating is a sport and it would take a woman that is his equal to win him over. The surfer boy has perfect hair and body and spends half a year on a tropical island. He can be an amusing boyfriend to have, but he’s not husband material. The life coach likes to improve the women he is dating. He can be controlling and thinks that he is better than you. The cowboy is physically built and is good in bed.
The man you thought was gay is a sensitive and caring person who isn’t threatened by anybody. He has no idea you think he is gay but he may also make the best boyfriend. The man-child is a kid at heart. He loves to joke and play video games. He is into girls that are similar to him and that act herself. The undercover hottie may not seem all hot at first sight. But for some reason, he can get women that are out of his league. Mr. Selective may be the worst of all types of guys. He may be good looking but he is a known liar and a cheater. He tends to ‘forget’ to mention things like how he has a girlfriend. The sensitive rocker is a chick magnet and can pick up more girls than a football quarterback. He is sweet and sensitive, but can get his feelings hurt easily. The passionista is into wine, extreme sports, and opera. He’s always dressed professionally regardless of what he is doing but he may not be very attractive. Mr. Jealous may be attractive and well groomed, but he is not very trusting and makes you prove your innocence. Mr. Right can be anyone and anywhere. He is hard to find and many women already settle before coming across to him. Lastly, the prepster likes dressing up and loves to read. He likes women who can give him a challenge and women that have good manners.

The article that I am summarizing is from the New Yorker, January 11, 2010 issue page 23. The article is called Comment um, pathetic by Hendrick Hertzberg. Obama has had a rocky end of 2009, even some of his supporters were wavering from we believe to Obama deceives. With his supporters starting to have doubts Obama introduced to congress a huge health care reform bill that would revolutionize the American healthcare system. It would give millions of Americans insurance coverage, as well as strengthening plans of those who are already insured. Not only will this bill increase the number of insured Americans but also it will make the heath care system more efficient. This bill will provide health care for the low-income and blue -collar families, who are the ones who are in need the most. The Obama administration has made it clear though that even with the bill finally passed it won’t be perfect. But compared to our present situation in healthcare it will be a big step in the right direction.

This article is called The Man Who Beat AIDS by Alice Park. A demonstration played on the screen at a 2007 AIDS assembly while Dr. David Ho sat in attendance. A blindfolded athlete swung hard at the ball being thrown as Ho and his coworkers laughed. The demonstration represented the entertained but serious scientists. The demo depicted the fight against AIDS as trial and error.
The meaning was recognized by Ho. Ho and fellow coworkers unsuccessfully tried to develop a cure but had been stumped for the last 25 years. There was little that strong drugs could do to counter HIV. A vaccine is the only way to stop the outbreak. There's never been a vaccine that has achieved this. "I think it accurately pictured our chance of success. We all felt that frustration."
Producing useful protection is now the primary issue. The 70%-90% starting point for a vaccine is not close to the 31% the vaccine is able to quarantine. Researchers established two new antibodies that appear to nullify the virus.
The shot against the virus was considered a failure in 2007. The scientific community is still having difficulty recouping from it even though no one expected an impressive outcome. "We are still a long ways away from having an effective HIV vaccine that physicians can reach into the cabinet and pull out in a vial and inject into a person." says Dr. Bruce Walker, an HIV expert at Harvard Medical School.

In TIME magazine I found an article by Alice Park about Dr. David Ho. He is a scientist at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center(ADARC). He has been researching AIDS and HIV cures/medicines since the disease was discovered in the 1980s. He has been through many trials and tribulations through the years, but one breifing in Houston, Texas might have shed some light on this horrible disease.
Ho was introduced to a new agent called ibalizumab, an antibody that may be able to block HIV's entry into healthy cells. This would slow the growth of HIV into AIDS and further advance their knowledge of the disease. The only way this is going to work is to make a vaccine. He has decided to put his employees to work with this antibody and try to reach a huge breakthrough in the field. They are planning to give a very strong strain of HIV to monkeys and test their vaccines on them. If it doesn't begin to show signs of improvement in the beginning, Ho will stop the research and waste no more time on this new agent. If the monkeys are improving, further research will be done to perfect the vaccine as much as possible.
Many other scientists are doubtful of Ho's new ambition, but if he succeeds he will be some kind of hero. There are thousands of ways to fail in the AIDS field, but Ho is very hopeful and confident in these new findings. Science cannot be based off of good insticts, but he is staying positive.

It’s beyond midnight and there is only one light blazing at the Raider’s world headquarters. It is in the office of coach Al Davis, who is orchestrating a single person think tank, as he plans the next move for his failing team. Tiredly the old man stood up and hobbled through the corroder. He enters a brown doo and is overwhelmed by light. Covering his eyes with his hands, he spots metal walls, a dark rug and a pompous desk, behind it is his fifty four year old self.
“I’m confused, this is not the bathroom.” “Don’t be afraid enter.” “Don’t I know you?” “I’m you twenty six years ago the morning after the last Super Bowl you won.” “That was a good game, we dominated the Washington Red Skins. I was in a hotel but I didn’t see you.” “Sure I was because I’m you” “Ya right, what do you want?” “I’m going to the grade you.” “Grade me? But I’m in charge!”
Spiritual Awareness
In the article, Spiritual awareness written by Evette Gardner, found at this article base site[1], speaks of spiritual deliverance from misconceptions created by our ill perception. She expresses an honest heart and positive outlook that is induced from spiritual awareness. It is said that this knowledge is easily attainable. It is about being mindful and acknowledging these surprising revelations that remain universal among all people. To be aware of your Spirit you must obtain and believe in the Truth. Thereby accepting spiritual Truths open the doors to this higher vibration for the soul. Causing positive awareness in the world around you. It is a spiritual law, “That you cannot perceive what you do not believe.” It is a known truth that the power of believing is the strongest faith. In that fueling the power to believe in you.
The greater our awareness grows, the more distinguished our Spirits shall be. The more spiritual aware of our Self in chance begin to see ourselves in others and things around us. Within this idea of transcendental perception emanates from the core of our beings. Which proposes this recognition that everything starts with you- your inner being to transform the world around you. By accepting and surrendering to these Truths reveals the light tomorrow will bring and the awareness of a beautiful life.

The Teen Job Chop
-By Stephan Gandel
More and more teens are having trouble finding jobs in the last year. The economy is more or less to blame for that. There were several teens discussed in the article. Juan Iraheta who dropped out of high school to support his son and girlfriend who he lives with. He currently is an employee at Best Buy, but his hours have been getting cut. He wants to find a new job, however most employers only want to hire older adults because they feel they are more reliable.
Another teen that was talked about was Rubina Sarkisian, who is a senior in high school that was seeking employment for three months. She went to a mall nearby her, which happened to be America's fifth largest mall. After filling out 25 applications, and realizing most places wouldn't hire her because she was under 18, she was able to connect with a friend and get a job at Godiva.
The article goes on to say how much the recession has made more and more teens unable to find employment. This is leading to teens turing to illegal ways of making money and causing teens that have to support families difficulties. The problem has been going on before the recession but now has gotten much worst. One man said that, "teen unemployment is one of the leading causing of single-parent households. That women are less likely to marry men who don't appear to have the ability to adequately support a family. On the other hand, teenagers who work tend to not become teen parents." The article did however, point out the good behind teen not being able to find employment. If teenagers aren't working right out of high school, it gives them more of a push to pursue higher levels of education. The number of teens that are working may be down, but the percentage of teens enrolling in college is up from 78 percent in the 90s to 83 percent now. This can only lead to more skilled workers.

Summary of "Back In The Day: When Michael Was Cool" by John Jeremiah Sullivan. GQ Magazine, September 2009. click here to read article!
The passing of Michael Jackson took everyone by surprise last summer. Although he led a somewhat bizarre lifestyle, Jackson was undoubtedly the King of Pop. In the September 2009 issue of GQ, author John Jeremiah Sullivan summarizes Jackson’s life in his own words, and opinions. Titled “When Michael Was Cool”, this nine page spread is a quick biography of Michael before, and after his transformation. Jackson’s family always influenced his music and after venturing off into his solo career, Michael often brought in his siblings to critique his work. As a teenager, Michael caught the attention of Diana Ross, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, and Berry Gordy. With plenty of A-list friends and increasing fame, Jackson’s face was always in the public eye. His nose was a cause for insecurity, so once his debut album “Off The Wall” was released, Michael sought out a few plastic surgeries including several nose jobs. It was also rumored that the infamous silver glove Michael wore during performances was to hide his early stages of Vitiligo. The success of “Off The Wall” made it nearly impossible to produce a follow up album, but this served as a challenge for Michael to overcome. “Thriller” shot Jackson’s musical and dance career into superstardom. Along with success comes controversy, and unfortunately Jackson was no stranger to rumors and scandals. Michael’s condition became worse and he had more plastic surgery procedures done to alter his face. He constructed an amusement park on the property of his home and had a pet monkey. He dated a few celebrities and eventually had three children from a surrogate father, and mother. Of all the stories surrounding him, the accusations of child molestation was the biggest scandal Michael faced. During this time Jackson donned the name “Wacko Jacko”. After Jackson was found not guilty of the charges, he returned to recording and rehearsing to prepare for his upcoming final world tour. Although we will never get a chance to see a lifetime of dedication to his music, we will always remember the King of Pop for who he was – bizarre or cool.

In the article more musicians stage concerts to benefit Haiti Jim Harrington lists several popular bay area lounges and artists doing what they can to help the relief efforts. Among these concert benefits is the House party tour taking place on February 3rd. The musical acts in this specific benefit concert are Lenny Williams, Too $hort, Erik Tha Jerk, and Pop Lyfe, and the Oakland Interfaith choir. The organizer of this event, D'wayne Wiggins, plans on to continue to help collect money for Haiti by taking this benefit concert on tour. The next fund raising benefit concert found in this Oakland Tribune article is the Stand with Haiti concert being held at the Cafe du Nord. Thee oh Sees, Kelly Stolz, Ty Segall, and the Sandwitches are the four musicians combining their skills to give funds to the Haitian medical relief organization. The third show mentioned in this article is the Paul Green School of Rock Music. All the artists participating in this concert have all been connected to this local School of Rock association. Many classical-rock popular songs such as "Separate Ways" by Journey and "Inca Roads" by Frank Zappa will be included in the concert's playlist. The money that this relief effort benefit raises will go to Convoy of Hope, another Haitian relief program. Another benefit show goes by the name of “In the Name of Love” is being held at a venue in San Francisco. Dr. David Ho was in attendance at an AIDS assembly in 2007 while a cartoon demonstration played onscreen. Fellow workers and Ho laughed when they looked at the screen and saw a blindfolded baseball player swing hard at the ball as it was thrown. While the scientists were entertained, they were also serious; they knew the cartoon represented them. Trial and error is what the image was portraying just like the long war to fight AIDS.
Ho recognized the meaning. For about 25 years, he and his colleagues kept swinging but were unsuccessful at making a hit because HIV always stood in the way. Strong drugs used to defeat HIV could only go so far. Only a vaccine could control and stop the spread of HIV. To this day, the dilemma is that a vaccine plan has never been achieved to keep the virus from contaminating new people. "It struck a special chord with me," says Ho of the baseball demonstration. "I think it accurately pictured our chance of success. We all felt that frustration."
Plenty of changes occurred since the assembly, but the primary problem of producing useful protection against AIDS still exists. On the plus side, in 2009, scientists proclaimed that they had produced the first vaccine to show any result to counter the spread of HIV-even though the result is very little. The vaccine's ability to quarantine the risk of new HIV infection 31% is nowhere close to the 70%-90% that public health experts usually see as the least starting point for a contagious-disease vaccine. Even more inferior in progressing, but still hopeful, are two new antibodies established by a number of researchers working at different labs that appeared to nullify the virus and defeat efforts to infect healthy cells.
The joy over those progressions, however, has been hardened by the still fresh memories of a modest withdrawal in 2007, after a highly awaited shot against the virus was considered a failure. Although no one expected an impressive outcome, nor did anyone presume such a sensational victory and the scientific community is still having difficulty recouping from it. "We are still a long ways away from having and effective HIV vaccine that physicians can reach into the cabinet and pull out in a vial and inject into a person," says Dr. Bruce Walker, an HIV expert at Harvard Medical School.

I chose the article "forgiveness Heals" written by Sally Kempton from Yoga Journal. The article focuses on how anger and hurt towards another person can easily become part of your life and even the root of your existence if you do not truly forgive. The article states that in order to truly forgive you must change your perspective and view the person who hurt you as a human being with thoughts and feelings rather than focusing on how you feel about what they did. The article lists various ways in which you can open your heart to the person and see that by forgiving them you are really forgiving a part of yourself and this will enable you to feel compassion in place of anger or hurt. ONly after you truly forgive the person who "wronged" you will you be free of negative thoughts and feelings associated with the subconscious belief that you are in some way inadequate or flawed because of what they did. The article gives an example of a mother whos son was beaten to death in a street fight, after the killer was sentenced she wanted to meet him to tell him how much she despised him however when she saw him shackled and crying she was unexpectedly overcome with compassion and the anger melted away. This shows how true forgiveness can be an extremely liberating and up-lifting experience that will free your mind from the strong attachment to anger and hurt that people are so suceptible to.

Is college really worth it? A young lady Name Julie reports to a local Sonics fast food joint five days a week for work. Just by looking at here you would never be able to tell that she was a woman of higher learning. Since high school Julie has a completed a four year degree in Advertising at the University of Missouri. Julie started at the local Sonics as a part time employee. She works there to make a few extra bucks during the semester. Now that she has finished college she has gone thru the rankings at Sonics and is now a manager. She says her dream job would to be working at a multimillion dollar conglomerate coming up with witty and corky ads to pleas consumers. She fills out applications weekly for local and out of state jobs yet no luck. Julie is one of thousand college students caught up in this ongoing struggle. So after knowing her story the question is college really worth it makes some on such as myself begin to rethink what it is I’m doing. On the average a college education at a university is up wards of 50,000 dollars for a 4 year degree. If you chose to go to a stare school the price is a little bit cheaper but not by much. Every year thousands of men and women graduate college with a debt up wards of the 30,000 dollar mark in student loans that they are finding difficult to pay off due to lack of job out there in the work world. Is college really worth it? Only if you can obtain an education in a non expensive fashion.

Debi Thorkelson twisted her knee and was required to have a surgery. She is one of the millions uninsured Americans. The treatment was more than $41,000. Her husband found an agency that will pair up patients with doctors overseas. Her surgery, plane tickets and 9 days stay in a newly opened rehab center, just below $4,000.
Places like Brazil, Costa Rica, Singapore, Thailand and India do procedures like hip and knee replacement, cancer and experimental procedures and heart and gynecological surgery. Outsourcing health care is the new trend and a lot of experts have confidence in it. While others believe that risks comes with it, to name a few, unknown doctors, little recourse if things for wrong and long distance travel, making it a risky and unwise alternative. Josef Woodman said, author of Patients Beyond Borders, the first detailed guide to medical travel, “ Medical Tourism is intensely free from harm if patients do the their research and understand what they’re getting into before they go.” “ The number of people without insurance is rising add the medical expenses continuing to go up, the globalization of health care is about to increase sharply.”, Karen Timmons said, Head of the Joint Commission International (JCI), an association liable for evaluating and endorsing U.S. hospitals. Sander Domaszewicz, a human resources consulting company said, “For patients desiring to obtain care overseas, soon insurance firms will began compensating them.” They’ll waive your co-payment or share of the cost.
Big savings are the obvious appeal for the majority of companies and patients. Savings of up to a sixth of the U.S. price for the procedure comprising of the plane tickets, rehab center stay and sometimes health and wellness package. You have the choice. The bottom line is you have to understand what you’re choosing.

S.F. abortion protest draws thousands
By Joe Garofoli (Chronicle Staff Writer)
Emboldened by recent shifts in the political landscape, several thousand anti-abortion activists rallied in San Francisco on Saturday in a march that stretched from the Ferry Building almost to Fisherman’s Wharf.
The sixth annual Walk for Life, organized by two Bay Area women, was bolstered by busloads of marchers drawn from organizations across California. They walked from Justin Herman Plaza to the Marina district.
The event was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision, the Jan. 22, 1973, ruling that legalized abortion in the United States. Organizers have staged each of their yearly protests in San Francisco as a symbolic challenge in a city that strongly favors granting women access to abortions.

My article is called "The Path of a Pandemic" by Laurie Garrett.
It can be found at:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/195692
In this article she talks about how the swine Flu known as the H1N1
flu first started and how it was overlooked in the past, and how it has become a Pandemic in the present.
She talks on how the flu seems to be spread back and forth between animals and Humans, each time evolving a little as it does. As the virus runs into other virus's and evolving into a "reassorted" Virus, it becomes more dangerous or a little less leathal.
About the time the Virus starts going world wide alot of people start blaming the Americans for it.
Some countries have Cut off a program called WHO (World Health Orgization)thinking that the Americans are purposefully getting them sick to raise their Pharmaceutical sales and earn money off it. The goverments got into a heated discussion about how the Contain this virus and what other countries should do. Mexico shut down most of thier schools, entertainment and social places to contain the virus in thier nation. While other nations are banning food made of meat from America.
Please look at your essays in the "preview" option before posting. The essays which do not show the paragraphing are hard to read.
Kyle Wrabek stayed after class and we went over his summary and agreed that he could do a bit more. That it wasn't his best work. The Newsweek article on the flu pandemic was over three pages long and very well written.
He caught typos and other mistakes. Also the post lost its formatting.
Wait to respond to his second draft, not the one posted here.
Another classmate of yours, Mr. Ani, stayed late and we had a nice get to know you chat as his Internet connection started working when he moved to another location in the classroom.
Thursdays are pretty easy, so if you are around and want to talk or get clarification on an assignment or feedback....
Oh, another thing, your posts are like attendence today (smile). I know who was here because you posted (just kidding).
Get the assignments in before Monday.
I need to get going.
Thanks!

I been aware of the dangers of technology for sometime. I did an oral report about over exposure to television and internet last semister in my speach class. The bennifits are undeniable, but the cons are more subtle and not just psychological but physilogical as well. My conclusion was to limit yourself to one hour infront of a screen a day, keep it educational, avoid ads, and be aware of misinformation. Anything else is like brain candy.... it rots your insides but taste so good.

I read an article on PSU.com titled, American hacks PlayStation 3. This is huge news in the gaming world. George Hotz, aka GeoHot, was the first person ever to release a hack for the Iphone, and now he has done it again for the PS3 system.
This is no small feat. The PS3 has remained unhacked for 3 years, 2 months, 11 days. It was thought to be unhackable. But this superstar hacker did what nobody else could do in 5 weeks. This opens up the PS3 to homebrew applications, cross platform games, pirated software and so much more. There's going to be some big changes coming our way on this system. Thanks GeoHot!

I really enjoyed reading your article because I believe it is a serious issue. Your summary was very informative and well written. Gang activity and violence can put teens in a bad position and the system can't do much about it. Just the fact that they attract kids as young as 10 is scary.

I read Carmella Montes' summary to her article, “Fare allergic reaction made teen’s face peel off,” by Mike Celizic. After readying her summary it makes me worry about taking medication. It seems that you don't know how your body would or could react. What really caught my attention is the fact that her facial skin started pilling and that her make up had something to do with it. A question that I have is what brand of make up was she wearing that made her have this terrible reaction. After reading the original article, I can say that Carmella did summarize the main points of this article. She did give enough main facts as for the percentage of people around the world that do have these same reaction to this type of medication. Over all she did a good job summarizing her article. I had a clear understanding what the article was about by simply reading her summary.

Survival-skill classes are becoming increasingly popular. These are programs that teach adolescents traditional hunter-gatherer techniques. Catching wild animals, camping, foraging, and even utilizing roadkill are all example of the curriculum. Many day-long or longer workshops can be found at retreats and conferences held in the wilderness.
Biggs is a student in Berkeley. He is raising two kids and supporting his wife with a combination of urban primitivist skills and student aid. He trashpicks, squats, and eats road kill.
Dino Labiste works for East Bay Regional Park District and teaches multiple classes about survival techniques in the bay area.

The article "Can America's Top Gun in Haiti Keep the Relief Effort in Order," Jay Newton describes what went through the mind of U.S Lieut. General Ken Keen when the horrendous earthquake hit Haiti. Within those forty seconds of the ground trembling, Keen knew that he needed to get out into the streets to help people; he needed to get into action to save as many people as one man could. But he did not know the extent of the problem until the next day, when he walked through the streets of Haiti and could hear mourning, crying, screaming and praying of those who were stuck in their collapsed homes. He knew that he was lucky enough to have survived, and for that he needed to help others.
While there were those who believed that help has taken too long to get to Haiti, Keen knew that if he were not to be visiting help would have taken a lot longer to reach the Haiti people.
Standing with his men Keen knew that he had to send teams out to evaluate the damage and he could not do it alone. That is why he depends on the U.S, U.N, Canada, France many more other countries to help. Eleven days have passes and Keen wants to help solve the biggest problem that the people in Haiti are facing, which is not having enough room and or space for doctors to help the wounded.
Hospitals might be big problem for Haiti, but food and clean water is another problem for the survivors of the earthquake. Water distribution is going as planned, but when it comes to giving many hungry people food, ciaos is around the corner. While countries across the nation are teaming up to send food, they plan to feed about two million people food by end of the month.
So while hope is running low for those who have family members trapped in collapsed house, Ken Keen is giving people hope as best as he can.

Health is one of important issue that is interested most in our nowadays society; therefore, finding ways that help people avoid or get rid disease’s effects are necessary. In the article “ Get a flu shot and give the gift of health to your family”, having a vaccination brings many benefits to us.
First, when we have a flu shot in cold season, our body forms immunity system that saves us from dangers of which H1N1 (swine flu) impacts to our health. Moreover, we care for people whom we communicate with such as family member, lover, and coworker. CDC’s Alan Janssen said “ vaccine’s not only for you, it’s also for those around you,”. According to children who is from 0 - 12 months and old people, their immunity is weak, so they are easy to get sick from the infected people. Protection for those is to vaccinate for family’ s members whom they are closed by , for if they don’t vaccinate, virus from their body will transmit to old people and young children.
Second, if every body gets vaccinated, H1N1 ( swine flu) disease cant expand because it is hard for the virus H1N1 to find residence. Furthermore, pigs are also environments where virus can attack easily, so vaccination for folks are needed to prevent increasing of swine flu.

“Open Your Heart To Haiti” is the article that I felt compelled to write about from the Oakland Post, a local news paper. Since the earth quake in Haiti we are all familiar with the crisis that has taken place as well as the numerous challenges. This particular article and the two main characters involved, Hattie Carwell and Constanino Donatien have had on going relationships with the people of Haiti since March 1986. Donatien who is a native to Haiti is also a pastor and boat person who came to the US to become educated and employed in the California court system. Donatien has founded 9 schools that are serving more than 5,000 students per year. Donatien and his wife Ester provide the trained teachers, uniforms, shoes, educational material along with food for the children of the schools daily. Former President Bill Clinton his wife and current President Obama are helping as well to bring the people of Haiti much needed relief and aid. Now Hattie Carwell, the President of the National Technical Association which is the eldest minority technical organization in the US. Carwell is also a board member of the Black Professional Engineers in Oakland. Carwell organizes technology seminars and helps minimize self-help solutions. Carwell and Donatien have been meeting to also help gather digital cameras so that the youth they have taught to use them can post the photographs they have taken of survivors on their website. Another major problem they are dealing with is the contaminated water from the decomposing bodies. Donatien and Carwell are doing a lot of great work for the people of Haiti.

The amazing effort that brown invested in his campaign paid off. One year after Obama’s inauguration, a strong message was sent Brown won the seat on the senate, considering Massachusetts a very powerful State he said “what happened in this election can happen all over America”. Brown accomplish his promise to become the 41st Senator in the state and give to the republican the power to block the health care bill since Brown is a big opponent t of such reform that he believe “is being forced on the American people” Brown, Time magazine, he believe that the reform will raise taxes, cut important benefits, raise unemployment rates and bring the country on a big debt.
The article also refers how this victory has a sadness remark since Senator Kennedy was a long term warrior in the battle for Universal health care, bringing Massachusetts closer to any other state to give coverage to all its citizens and of what ones Senator Kennedy call “ the cause of my life”.
Brown’s freshness and tireless aptitude are his abilities and the passion hi put on his campaign in comparison to his opponent. Brown has a lot to work on, the news still talk about his personal live and what he did on the past, the nude pictures for a magazine were a sensation on the internet, but his services as a Army National guard was admired too. He was elected as local tax assessor in 1992, in 2004 he was elected to the state senate; he seems to be more conservative about taxes and guns and more liberal on issues like abortion.

This article talks about the current economic woes that America is going through. It speaks of the housing bubble bust, and the numerous people on unemployment, what the government is doing about both problems and how its decisions are affecting the American people. Basically what the article is getting at is that the more the government tries to “ease the pain” of the people the more they are really extending the suffering. While the article says that no politician wants to be accused of having a lack of compassion, however compassion is what the problem really is. By keeping people in homes that they can no longer afford, and letting them remain on unemployment for extended periods of time. They the politicians are prolonging the recession, by letting people not feel the panic of losing everything. The article states that people wait until the last minute of their unemployment benefits to take a job, because they are being possibly too picky about what job they will take. The gist of the whole article is that unemployment extensions create a vicious cycle because the longer you are allowed to stay on unemployment the less likely you are to re-enter the work force and become a productive member of society.

Article Summary: The Future Of Fat by Melinda Wenner
From Popular Mechanics Jan 2010 Issue
This article is about a young student Aaron Cypress at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. By attending his endocrinology class, he discovered something that interest him. It is called the “Brown Fat Cells.” These cells are known to be located in the neck and the chest. These fat cells are no ordinary fat cells because these cells contains many organelles known as the mitochondria and an enzyme that releases energy from food calories directly as heat. This interest him to find out how this fat totally works, so he asked many scientists and concluded that its very helpful part of the body that can boost our metabolism and immune system. It is said to be a potential treatment for conditions such as obesity. To activate this fat, it is said that the body needs to be in a cold temperature than the room temperature. Its like soaking feet in ice water or 2 hours of wearing thin clothing in a cold season would boost the activity of this fat 15 times more than the room temperature. Now Aaron is trying to show us the idea of making a pill that can activate this fat. Many doctors said that we have some pills like that but it is used for spine surgeries and also its less likely to work because when a person works out, the person reduces weight increasing not by burning calories but by increasing the brain’s sensitivity to suppress hormones like leptin and insulin. Meaning that the brain ignores the signal of these hormones and by doing that, it can also ignore the drug due to its similar use. Cypress and his colleagues are concentrating on different proteins such as BMP-7 that aids bone growth because the bone communicates with the fat. There is also a protein that is present in brown fat which is PRMD-16. This protein is not seen in white fat cells and if PRMD-16 is lacking in brown fat cells, the cells would turn into muscles.

Click teenagers and abortion.
Article Summary:
In the article Teenagers and Abortion, Charles Clark discusses teen abortion and whether or not parental involvement laws are appropriate to help make better decisions. More than a million underage girls become pregnant each year. Roughly 82% of these pregnancies aren’t planned, and 42% are aborted. Adolescents aren’t mature enough to make these decisions on their own, and parental guidance may be necessary to assist them making the appropriate decision. The idea of making these laws has caused wide controversy. Those who support pro abortion rights may not favor these ideas for the simple fact that every woman should be able to decide what is best for them. Anti-abortion activists think that abortion is simply un-ethical, and that most teens quickly decide on abortion because are just aren’t ready to take on the responsibility. Although each side of the issue has different views, many find common ground on the idea of these laws. Most of these supporters are parents. The real question here is if these laws decrease the amounts of teen abortion each year. It is said by abortion-rights advocates that parental involvement laws are just another attempt to restrict access to abortion. “It’s a right –to-life effort to chip away at abortion, a war of attrition,” says Eleanor Smeal, president of the Fund for a Feminist Majority, a legislative interest group based in Alrington, VA. “It’s all a secondary strategy to banning abortion,” says Kathryn Kolbert, state coordinating counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project.
A study in August of 1990 showed that teen birthrates were higher than ever for the first time in eighteen years, widely among teenagers from ages 15-17. It is difficult to determine if there is any impact coming from parental consent laws, but there are some studies in Missouri that show abortion rates declined by 43% after making the law active. I look at this law being unfair to the mother carrying the child. For someone to make a life-impacting decision for you isn’t fair. It is said in some states that the judge may be able to take place of the parental guardian if the teen mother lack one. The judge must determine whether or not the adolescent is mature enough to make this decision on her own. If he/she feels she isn’t, they then decide what would be in her best interest. I understand the reasons why abortion may be frowned upon. However, you shouldn’t feel obligated to bring a child in this world without the means or the maturity to take care of it. I do not see this law being passed in California, but if it does teens must act responsibly to not be a victim of it. Practice safe sex. If that isn’t possible, remain abstinent.

Ever sense the shooting that took place 2009 new years day involving Oscar Grant, there has been a lot of bad talk going around about the police officers employed by BART. There was a lot of controversy going on including protesting, riots, and so on. January 25, 2010 the state assembly voted to improve oversight of the police officers employed by bart. A year later it took an police auditor to investigate the public complaints of misconduct against the bart officers. With bart police office Johannes Mehserle pleading not guilty to the shooting a lot of people feel that the bill doesn't go far enough according to assemblyman Tom Ammiano. The BART board has omitted to bring more trust worthy public oversight later on. The bill passed 56-0 and now goes to the senate.

Some of my little cousins only how to speak Spanish and are now attending a school where they first learn Spanish and then English. She has been learning English little by little and it is hard for her to get help out of school because her parents do not know how to speak English. She is mainly learning by watching television and listening to people that speak English. My parents taught me to speak Spanish first when I was small because that was all we were allowed to speak. English was only to be spoken when at school or getting help for homework. I think that some people do that because if one focuses too much on one language then they start to forget the other. The only thing that matters really is that people get an education. I know that if I were to go to Mexico I would be behind. I liked your summary and thought it was good.
Response to Juan Li Summary
I think that all parents should try to make time for their children because they tend to grow up fast. They may miss a lot of things in their lives. These people should not only care about themselves. Personally I think that families should try and be close and take advantage of the time that they have together, They never know what could happen in life. I think that your summary should be a little longer so that we can know more about what is going on. It was a straight to the point article.

"When You Should Hold A Grudge"
http://www.oprah.com/spirit/When-to-Forgive-and-When-to-Hold-a-Grudge-Martha-Beck_1/2
Summary:
The Article, "When You Should Hold A Grudge", by Martha Beck, is about separating yourself from those who are negative. In every bad situation comes a way of dealing with it. It is how you define grudge. A good grudge is a simple way of acknowledging another person's faults. Depending on the person, you might hold a grudge light as a feather or as solid as a titanium shield. There are five different descriptions of people you might see yourself concerned about.
Planarian People are one of the lowest life-forms that can be considered an animal. Planarian's are not evil, they just lack emotional intelligence. To spare frustration, a light grudge may be a consideration.
Three-Strikers are those who fail the "three strike" rule. If you not only have a bad experience with a person but constantly hear reports about that person from three unrelated sources, it is time for a protective grudge.
When you start to question yourself continuously around a specific person, you should hold a good constructive grudge. The term used for these people is gaslighters. Gaslighter's tend to have secrets and hidden schedules. You might go crazy without a protective grudge because a gaslighter tells lies and manipulates for no apparent reason.
Les Pitiables are the most dangerous people of all. The key of recognizing sociopaths is that they consistently mess up other people's lives by pittying them. Most people don't enjoy being pitied, while sociopaths adore it. If someone constantly makes you feel sorry for them, step back and bear protection.
And last but not least, The Hyde Transformers. A final reason for holding a grudge is if any person who displays the capacity to be truly monstrous. In the beginning, these people come off in a possitive way up until their true colors are exposed. Transformers tend to have frequent mood swings and not even realize their in the wrong. If someone in your life is monstrous-even once-be aware of your surroundings.
Having pointed out the different kinds of peoplewho should be managed with caution and alertness, unconditional love and forgiveness are saintly quantities, ones we should all cultivate.

Summary
“College degree: still worth it?” was written by Mara Rose Williams. The article came from the newspaper the San Francisco chronicle. The article is explaining how a person may get into a situation where one may end up paying for something more than what its worth. An example is Patricia Summers who took out loans to go to school and is now unable to find a job where she can use her degree. Her college cost are more than $50,000 and she still owes $18,000. She has a degree from the University of Missouri but had no other choice but to work at a Sonic drive-in. It’s not worth it if a person pays a lot to go to school and is unable to find a good paying job since the degree has no value in the market.
The price for college is going up and so is the debt. Another example is Aaron McNally who paid about $50,000 for a degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He paid a lot since a M.A. usually cost about $48,208. After a long time going to school, what a person may end up making is not enough. McNally eventually didn’t find a job in his post and had to get a job at a grocery store.
Not everybody believes that college is the only option. Perfect examples are Steve Jobs of Apple, B. Gates of Microsoft, Michael Dell of Dell, L. Ellison of Oracle, or Zuckerberg of Facebook who are all extremely successful and all dropped out of college.
Not everyone is made to go to college, but its proven that an education does bring more money. Even if a person goes to college its no guarantee that you will be more successful. It all depends on the individual.
A lot of families are trying to analyze the situation. A all-cost included education at Harvard will come out to be $188,860, and in-state it will cost $60,656. The average cost for four years will be $22,656.
A degree doesn’t mean as much as it did before. Male students are making about the same as they were in the early 1970s, and females increased only slightly; after adjusting to inflation. Only 1 out of 5 graduates had a job after their graduation.
Summers still believe that college was worth it, and still hopes on finding a job. Her mind might change if things don’t change soon. College comes with a lot of non-monetary intangibles. Nevertheless studies indicate that overall college graduates are happier and live better.

I enjoyed reading your summary of your article "forgiveness heals", because it was similar to my own in the area of giving advice. I agree with this article, anger and hurt can build up inside if you don't truly forgive. It is unhealthy for yourself to go on without forgiveness. By forgiving somebody else, you are in a way forgiving yourself, freeing yourself from negative thoughts and feelings.

The article I read was entitled "surge in homeless sex offenders" by John Simerman. In this article Simerman addresses budgets made and frustration created by the growing number of paroled sex offenders. He references Jessica's Law,which is a law that was created to further punish sex offenders and reduce their ability to re-offend.
A 22 million dollar budget provides housing for offenders and is believed to be reason for the increased number of sex offenders who claim they are homeless. Under Jessica's Law, offenders are not allowed to live within 2,000 feet of areas in which children are such as parks, schools and play yards. At one point offenders were required to wear GPS devices so that parole officers could keep a close radar on them at all times. However in recent years, such devices have not been required and as a result many offenders have gone into forbidden "zones" where they are not welcomed by the community or by law.
According to paroled offenders, the rules and regulations created by such laws have made it impossible for them to find housing.Shelter can not be provided by family members, laws keep them out of certain areas and they are confined to the streets. As a result such housing must be made for these individuals and many take advantage of what is supposed to be a temporary living arrangement.
As the number of homeless offenders increases, more room must be made available inside the zones in which they are not permmited to live in. This creates frustration for non offenders not wanting to live around or with people who have commited such crimes.
Many officials believe that it is going to take more than tracking devices and zone patrol to make a change in this huge problem in our community. Laws may make it harder for offenders to seek out prey but the decision to re-offend is based on the individual offenders state of mind.
Constance Brown's response to Burley C.....(the death of the taco bell dog)
The dog on the taco bell commercials has passed away.
Although this is tragic, I couldnt help but find the choice of article a little humorous. I guess I just didnt expect this one. The summary was very brief but so was the original article I assume. Youre right, the little pooch was very intertaining and will be missed by all us couch potatoes.
A link to the article wasnt posted so im not sure if the reader touched all points but I think this one is pretty self explainatory unless the dog lived another life that hasnt been recognized by the media. The person who wrote this summary did mention that it was an old article, so maybe he or she just wrote from memory. Overall,in my opinion this was a good one.

My article talks about how racism and colorism still plays a large role in society today. The article gives numerous examples on this issue such as how President Barack Obama got an advantage over darker-skinned politicians. It was said that he had no Negro dialect unless he wanted one. There are many who are brainwashed and still believe that racism has past. There is another example mentioned on how there were two accomplices to a murder, both were black, one being light-skinned and the other dark-skinned. The light-skinned individual was said to be the shooter while the dark-skinned man was caught by being traced back to the murder. During the case, there was supposed to be two witnesses for the dark-skinned man who mysteriously never showed up. They also kept calling the dark-skinned man by a wrong man. It sounded obvious that the guy was set up. They ended up giving the light-skinned man a life sentence while the darker-skinned man had spent more than a quarter-century on death row. This example was given to say that darker-skinned African Americans are twice as likely to get the death penalty as to a lighter-skinned African Americans even thought the crime is of a same equivalence level. This also talks about how hundreds of Latino women have suffered from mercury poisoning in the process of trying to lighter there skin.

Victor Ani's response to article:
I did not see where to find the original article to this link so im not sure how to say if the person covered the article well. I believe it told me enought to get some type of idea to the article. I also had a little chuckle while reading. The "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" dog commercial is a classic.

The summary of your article was very clear and precise. The statistics on underage pregnancy in America are staggering. While This is a very controversial topic it is good to stay informed about womens/girls rights in America. I agree with you in that a woman should be the one to make the decision about what is right for her own life and body. I also agree with your statement "Practice safe sex. If that isn’t possible, remain abstinent." I think it would be beneficial to start mandatory sex-ed classes in middle schools to inform adolescents of the multiple birth control options as well as the dangers and consequences of unprotected sex.

The article that I have chosen for my paraphrasing is an article regarding the situation between the United States government and the intelligence agency that is overseeing one of the most notorious terrorist on the east of the mississippi. Al-awlaki is by far one of the powerful terrorist entities in the Middle east. Born and raised in the US, he has been educated in the American Theory and politics. Yet, the problem that has risen is the ability for the US government is to locate and eliminate al-Awlaki. The article illustrates the history of all the tactics that the US government has embedded within their operations that were used to eliminate some of the terrorist cells in the middle east. Also, their has been sources that have been included in this article that connects his actions to some of the past terrorist attacks that have not only burdened the United States but also other countries in the world.

The main focus of this video is teen depression. Heidi Collins from CNN Newsroom interviews Senior Medical Correspondant Elizabeth Cohen as she gives us an inside look on some of the main causes with teen depression, who it's attacking and some of the actions that take place. Cohen says that with the statistic of high school and college students being five to six times more likely to report a mental illness, they have surpassed the depression rate from 1938. Back in the 1938, Cohen continues, no one would know what you were talking about if you asked someone if they were depressed. She points out that high school and college student depression can also come with certain forms of anxiety, and antisocial attitudes. One of the main "helpers" of this mental illness are the reality shows that have taken over. Kids that see their favorite actor/actress/singer on a 'reality' show and see how they're living and what they have and the relationships that develop, they start to wonder why it can't happen to them. The teens get so caught up on living in a specific celebrity's life that they're own life becomes plain, and boring. The study shows that it's all in the head. If they start to believe that they should be living like a celebrity and eventually realize they're not, it starts to become a huge issue. That's where most of the depression and mental illnesses are coming from.

"Article Summary"
In the article 'Made in Tajuan", the author Michael Weinreb, talks about a kid that is only five foot six with tremendous basketball skills, but was underestimated because of his height. During Porter senior year in Highschool he wasnt being recruited due to his height, until one major program came after him hard due to his former Highschool teammate. Oregon University was the school that showed much interest in the five foot six narrative from Detroit. "I know what im capable of, I came into college with the type of mentality that i was going to put myself on the map.I was on a mission from the beginning" says porter. This article stood out to me the most because this is a kid that never gave up, worked hard in the gym everyday, and despite his height he always played above the talk of others. We all can learn something from Porter and what ive learned after reading this article is that, when you really want something and you have your mind and mentality set on it the skys the limit to what you can do.

The article “Raiders’ Dysfunction Reflects in Receivers” by Scott Ostler is basically speaking to the poor playing of the Raiders football organization and how it directly correlates with the poor productivity of the wide receiver position. For years the Raiders have followed their early decade success with a slew of mediocre wide receivers and even less promising teams. The old legendary days of wide receiver combinations of Tim Brown and Jerry Rice are long gone and so are the Super Bowl bound Raiders. I for one agree with the writers opinion but I think the blame can be hardly put on one position. Many teams in the past have had success without depth at wide receiver or even a passing game but the fact that the Raiders have a poor offensive line and an over paid and far too “heavy” quarter back have a greater impact on our failure.
