Kailah Satyarthi

This morning we watched an episode of the series called The New Heroes, which looks at individual efforts to address social ills in their communities. Visit http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/

The authors of Half the Sky speak about these modern Robin Hoods. Post your reflection on the episode and on the social entrepreneurship. Please tie into your reading of Half the Sky.

In your response, use 1-2 free paraphrases and one direct quote. Don't forget to use appropriate signal phrases.

In class we started with reflections on a poem from Alehouse 2009. The choice or selection varied according to the students. Four students responded, the rest of the class didn't have the book. It is $10 and for sale in the college bookstore.

Homework is to continue in chapter 2 in SPHE: Sentence Punctuation. Tomorrow we will review the templates and talk about the "Love Project," due next Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 15-16, 2010.

Kailash Satyarthi
Projects: Global March Against Child Labor, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude (SACCS), Rugmark

Locations: New Delhi, India (headquarters), partners in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Kailash Satyarthi has saved tens of thousands of lives. At the age of 26 he gave up a promising career as an electrical engineer and dedicated his life to helping the millions of children in India who are forced into slavery by powerful and corrupt business- and land-owners. His original idea was daring and dangerous. He decided to mount raids on factories — factories frequently manned by armed guards — where children and often entire families were held captive as bonded workers.

After successfully freeing and rehabilitating thousands of children, he went on to build up a global movement against child labor. Today Kailash heads up the Global March Against Child Labor, a conglomeration of 2000 social-purpose organizations and trade unions in 140 countries.

Yet even as he has become a globally recognized figure, Kailash continues the gritty work of leading raids to free slaves. Kailash believes that he must focus on a range of activities -- from the most grassroots to the most visionary -- in order to win the fight.

What Does SACCS Do?
Since its inception in 1989, SACCS and its partners have liberated nearly 40,000 bonded laborers, many of them bonded, working in various industries, including rug manufacturing. But to free such children without offering new opportunities would, in Kailash's view, be meaningless.

Bal Ashram in Rajasthan, India is a transition center where newly-freed slaves are taught basic skills. Kailash describes the arrival of a girl recently freed from a stone quarry: "It's a joyous experience to watch the changing emotions flit across this beautiful girl's face. She's like an open book, and her varying expressions tell us a story: the story of transition from slavery to a new life of freedom. When her face lights up, it is clear she is taking her first steps toward freedom and belief in others."

Since the Ashram can only serve 100 children at a time, Kailash has begun a program called "Bal Mitra Gram" to encourage Indian villages to abolish child labor. In order to be a part of the program, an entire community must agree that no child will be put to work and every child will be sent to school.

While changing India village by village is a worthwhile pursuit, such a strategy could take centuries to achieve Kailash's goal, and he is not prepared to wait that long. So he has begun attacking the problem by harnessing the immense power of market forces.

Many rugs from South Asia are manufactured using child labor. Kailash believes that if consumers around the world knew how their expensive and colorful Indian rugs were made, they would no longer think they were so beautiful. He started "Rugmark," a program in which rugs are labeled and certified to be child-labor-free by factories who that agree to be regularly inspected. Kailash plans to extend the labeling program to other products such as soccer balls, another popular product that is commonly made by children.

Kailash says "If not now, then when? If not you, then who? If we are able to answer these fundamental questions, then perhaps we can wipe away the blot of human slavery."

Reflection: The New Heroes

In the episode we watched this morning The New Heroes, showed how slavery is a big factor of Indian’s society. The mafia has a lot to do with the corruption and cheap merchandise that is produced because of slavery. Many people in other countries like the U.S.A. do not know where and how merchandise imported form Indian is made. If indeed it is made by slave children or adults. It seems as if it’s a secret that does not need to be known, but Kailash Satyarthi and many others believe that is it important not to support these mafias or support slavery. Kailash has been helping enslaved children and adult in the country of India for many years, even though it is a risky and dangerous thing to do, but it seem that it pays off because he is doing a good for his country and changing lives of many Indian people. The video explains how having children enslaved is the best cheapest labor to have. A child was interviewed and he explained that he would have to work all day and night and if he would go to sleep while working, he would be beaten and would have to continue to work. This is just horrible, and that is why Kailash saves these children from slavery and chooses to educate these children because he sees them as the future of India. He says that some children he has educated are now activist and are helping others that are enslaved to free them. Kailash over all goals is to have child free villages in India, and for this slavery to end, by this help chain he plans to create. Kailash believes to helping slaves and soon after slaves will helping each other to be freed. This is very similar to Half the Sky, because it explains how in the 1st chapter the struggle of many young girls and being enslaves or kidnapped to work as prostitutes, or in some situation if the country is so poor there very own parents sell there daughter to receive some money. In the book it gives a brief description on why there is a lot of prostitution in society like India. On page 6 in Half the Sky, “Since young men in those societies rarely sleep with their girlfriends, it has become acceptable for them to relieve their sexual frustrations with prostitutes.” I think that even if in societies like India men can not have sexual intercourses with there girlfriend that is not an excuse to have young girls enslaved for prostitution. It’s just plain wrong to enslave people period. What Kailash is great and inspiring to help people all over the world that have and practice slavery.

Reflection: The new Heroes

In class today we watched a movie about new heroes who are trying to save some kids from becoming slaves. I thought that slavery ended a long time ago, but when I watched that movie it really moved me. In India many kids are forced to live their lives as a low level person and slaves. They are forced to work in factories and paid the least amount of money and only dry bread to survive. They have to work more than 12 hours. Many people around the world want to buy cheap stuff but they do not know how it was made and how hard the kids had to work. In the movie Kailash Satyarthi tried to save as many kids, women and men he can from one town. A child was interviewed and he said that he had to work more than 12 hours a day, if he falls asleep then the people would beat him up and he will have to continue working. At the end he says “Change Is possible”. He is trying to change India and for a better future for kids. If we help him I am sure the world would be a better place and no one will have to live like a slave.”Half the Sky” is very similar to this story. Because they both explain how some people have to struggle to spend only one day of their life. In the book the first chapter is about some girls and women had to work as a prostitute and pray for their life. Also many poor men and parents would sell their daughter for a small amount of money. We all can change the world if we start somewhere. Kailash is risking his life to save kids and he is a real hero

Reflection: The new Heroes

The episode of The New Heroes introduced Kailash Satyarthi. This man breaks into compounds where modern slaves are held and frees them. India is home to many modern slaves who are put to work in factories. These people are in the lowest social caste system, the “untouchables.” The authors of Half the Sky proclaim their statistics regarding slavery in India as being very sexual in nature. Kailash reminds us that although this may exist as well, slavery occurs all too often. Much like the Indian girls in Half the Sky the untouchables showcased in the episode were forced to work every day sometimes as long as 19 hours in one shift.

Another similarity is the interest of organized crime in these atrocities. The exploitation of these people is very profitable and the mafia is often involved. Whether they are hawking goods made by slaves or the slaves themselves they are making money. Kailash actually, physically, breaks into these compounds and frees the captives. Then he relocates them and tries to reenter them into society. Kailash also started, “"Rugmark," a program in which rugs are labeled and certified to be child-labor-free by factories who that agree to be regularly inspected( http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/index.html).”

The New Heroes

In the episode of New Heroes, we wathed how some kids in India are treated unfair and degrading conditions. some are forced into slavery and are required to perform obscene acts for others. In India the determine how a person is being treated based on the caste system. The darker toned lower class, being the least respected, and the lighter toned upper class. The Indians were fowned upon by he higher class and some peasant woman and children were being forced into brothels to prostitute.
In America, we think we have it bad but if we look at the conditions other people endure on a day to day basis, iits nothing in comparison.

Reflection: The New Heroes

After watching the episode in "The New Heroes" about Kailash Satyarthi, I was amazed at what this guy did for these people. He put his life in constant danger to rescue the oppressed people from these small, rural towns in India, away from the tyranny of the mafia. Kailash believed that, to rid this oppression over the lower class people of India, that they must not let the children be turned into slaves. The children are the ones that are most susceptible to being influenced into slavery.
I believe that by putting a label on all the products that are manufactured by slave labor, it will have an impact on all societies, but not of huge significance. I am not trying to hurt those slaves that make those products, but I'm just trying to state that, even if there were stricter requirements that made products made by slaves more visible, I think that it will indeed make a difference, but not a huge impact like some people suggest. I think that (taking this from my own perspective) a lot of people are somewhat ignorant to what they buy and purchase. I know, from personal experience, that I never wonder, when buying anything, where this came from and whether or not it involved the use of slave labor. I am pretty sure that I am not in this boat by myself. I know that there are people in this world that doesn't care about anything but about their own lives. That doesn't mean that more labels would be an objective of unimportance.

Today we watched the video of new heroes. The hero who dedicated his effort to save children from slavery in India; Kailash Satyarthi is a human rights activist from India who has been at the forefront of the global movement to end child slavery and exploitative child labor since 1981. Kailash Satyarthi stand as an example of many heroes around the world; he faced a lot of difficulties during his work to save the children from slavery. Even though he was beaten some times, he did not give up until he achieved his plan. With forceful arguments he has established that child labor is, in fact, responsible for the perpetuation of poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, population explosion and many other social evils. He has also played an important role in linking the fight against child labor with the efforts for achieving 'Education for All'. I think this is similar to Half of the Sky because it talk about people situation and their status in their societies.

Alehouse - choose a poem and respond to it.

The poem I picked is Empties by Robert Allen Jr. it talked about a person regretting the thing he/ she did. Having no one around to help, feelings lonely and scared. They feel guilty for what they do which is drinking. Its like he/ she couldn’t believe that they drank alcohol. Now that person feels so drunk the next morning that person didn’t know how they got on the ground from the person feeling so drunk they felt so out of it . The person said. “when the bottle was empty, I thought I had died.” when he says this it shows that he/she is shocked that they had drunk a whole bottle.

Constance Brown's response to "Heroe's."

This episode of Heroe's focused on the efforts of Kailash Satyarthi, a man who helped free many slaves in his native land of India. Kailash along with others entered different villages and encouraged those who were enslaved to follow him to freedom. Upon arrival, the villagers were skeptical of his ideas and feared punishment if they were caught trying to escape. Kailash was able to gain the trust of his people and on one trip he was able to rescue 52 villagers, only leaving 3 behind.

Once families were free, they were taken to half way housing where they recieved food, shelter and education.Ceremonies with music and dancing were held to welcome those arriving.Children were taught to read and write, while the adults learned a trade to suppport the family. After 3 days, adults were taken back to their ancestrial villages to reunite with their lost familiy members yet unfortunatley some never returned. Those unable to provide or unwilling to live outside of slavery often sold themselves into "debt bondage." As a result, slavery continued.

Kailash continues to present ideas and solutions to abolish slavery. He believes that the only way to do so is to make sure that no child is ever a slave. He stresses the importance of consumer knowledge and presents ways in which we can avoid slave production. Ex.hes put together an organization to inform consumers of the cruelty indured by children to supply the consumers needs.

I watched about “The new heroes” yesterday morning. I feel so sad why modern slaves exist at India and south Asia. Kailash Satyarthi, he is new hero. His mission has been to create a child-friendly world, where children can learn and grow safely. He is good world father and has big compassion in the mind. Kailash fights slavery in many ways; one is by offering alternatives to slave-produced products. Rug mark is an organization that monitors production of local rug makers, and stamps rugs with their logo. This signals to consumers that the rugs were produced with fair labor. There are modern slaves’ factors. In the communities he creates for the slaves he frees, children live and learn marketable skills they will need later in life. Education is important why it could change world. Children learn academic subjects in classes and prepare to attend government-run schools with other children when they leave.
I related with “Half the Sky” book. Both of them (move and book) explained hard slaves story. They need to support other country. I think children’s slaves increase why their parent sold by low price. They work hard over 12 hours which is like hell society. I will find how to help children slaves

Yesterday in class we watching the New Heroes video that put a spotlight on Kailash Satayarthi. Satayarthi's main goal was to stop all slavery in India. He started out by going into a specific village and literally gathering all the babies, children, and adults and packing them into the back of a truck and continuing on out of the village. There was a specific problem involving one woman and her eagerness to want to stay behind while her husband is away on another job. She didn't want him to come back to the village and have her be gone. In the end, there were fifty-two that fled to freedom and there were only three that stayed behind. Another personal story that stood out to me was this one boy was telling us that he actually escaped successfully and when we arrived back home to his father, his father immediately resold him again for slavery. This is just mind-boggling to me. I can't seem to wrap my head around how you can have a child and feel absolutely nothing when you know that your offspring is being sold and overworked. I think it's disgusting to watch and even more disappointing to know that this is the reality of our world.

From watching the movie "New Heroes" ,I learned about India and how slaves are treated. The children have hard lives. For example, a child stated that he was beaten for simply falling asleep on the job during a 12-hr shift. The kid was no older than 15 years old. Kailash Satyarthi seemed to be their only hope for getting away from this lifestyle. He was working hard in the video to free the slaves from their abusive lifestyles. He took many slaves from India by truck, to freedom. Children were given opportunities to go to school and change their lives around to become someone and develop careers of their choice.
Its very hard to believe that there are people in the world that would beat, kill, or inflict any other kind of pain or abuse on a child. I almost want to cry thinking of the thousands and maybe even millions of children that are abused on a daily basis around the world. Have you no heart?

In this episode of Heros, Skyler teams up with Peter Petrelli, and Matt Parkman. Together they try to save the world from bad guys with super powers.

Oh wait wrong heros.

The other show about heros, the one we watched in class, was a lot more boring. Good thing there is a transcript because I stoped paying attention as soon as it started. A.D.D. strikes again.

After reading the article the frist question that came to mind was, "Who will make my Nikes and Tommy Hilfinger, now?" The second question I had is, "How much will this cost me as a consumer?"

I like buying stuff cheap and don't question where it comes from. I also enjoy being a member of a privliaged and civilized society.

Not all humans are born equal. Some are savages, others are lazy, and some are plain stupid. When the majority of the people in a society fall into one of these catagories, someone more intelligant, and cunning is going to take advantage of them. It is happening to us slowly in America. We are both lazy and stupid.

Nothing about this story is memorble to me so I picked 2 random paraphrases and included a personal responce:

1. -Bal Ashram in Rajasthan, India is a transition center where newly-freed slaves are taught basic skills.

-There is a transition center for new workers without wages are learn basic skills, located at Bal Ashram in Rajasthan, India.

Comment: The new skill they are learning better not be telemarketing, call centers, or american jobs that have been outsourced.

2. -What Does SACCS Do?

-SACCS does something, but what?

Comment: Apperently they free bonded workers. I would bet most of them, take the free money to pay their bond, and then sign up as indentured workers all over again.

Quote:
"If not now, then when? If not you, then who? If we are able to answer these fundamental questions, then perhaps we can wipe away the blot of human slavery."

Answer: When pigsfly, and someone other then me. Everybody is a slave to something or someone.

Wow! Another great touching assignment. The documentary was very gripping and influential. Kailash Satyarthi is an extremely focused individual. His work as we can see isn’t in vain all the people lives that he has impacted in a positive way can never be repaid. I believe that as he continues to help raid and rescue those who are forcefully enslaved at the slave villages, he will need more help. Satyarthy has been beaten and even stopped pursuing what some would consider a dream to help others out of a nightmare. Turning down an electrical engineering career to most wouldn’t even be in the question. Think of the all the time and schooling Satyarthi has invested into his own goals and desires. Only to give it up! How many would do such an act of love? This is the selfless question that we all must ask ourselves. And how we can do our part in making this world a better place, not for just for the betterment of ourselves and of our own families. But for those who are in need. “If not now, then when? If not you, then who?” when Satyarthi made this statement, it appealed to me, and provoked me to think about the urgency of not just the situation in India, nor other countries around the world that seem so far away. But rather about those whose lives I can impact for the greater cause of aiding in making someone else life’s dreams come to fruition. What about you?

The New Heroes – Kailash Satyarthi

We watched the New Heroes episode in class yesterday. This was a very touching moment. Kailash’s passion inspired people with a vision of children freedom and future. His courage and wisdom contribute to change the life of the children who have been locked up by the illegal entrepreneurs. He freed the child slavery and gave the children new chances by providing them learning opportunity and teaches them basic skill. The description Kailash has given for a girl who was rescued from dead states, “It is a joyous experience to watch the changing emotions flit across this beautiful girl’s face. She’s like an open book, and her varying expressions tell us a story: the story of transition from slavery to a new life of freedom. When her face lights up, it is clear she is taking her first steps toward freedom and belief in others.” I can imagine the happiness of Kailash’s accomplishment, and I can feel the same. Kailash is a brilliant, knowledgeable and full of love human being and he is really a one can change the world.

I feel the authors, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn of Half the Sky are coming with same touching hearts. They are also dedicating themselves to change the world by helping the females escape from brothel, and they also helping them to start the new life. They are using their voices in words to wake up the world while Kailash is taking it in action. They are all remarkable people who can light up others life.

The New Hero

After watching “The New Hero” film, I feel very sad, for I learn that there are many Indian people are being hungry, and they are forced to work similar to slaves. Moreover, children are not educated and soon being put to work. From these factors, I don’t want to buy cheap goods from India anymore, for I understand that these merchandises are made by children and poor people. Furthermore, this film reminds me about “ Half of Sky” book written by Nicholas D.Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn. The book is about women and young girls who also have to work like slaves; they are sexual slaves. Therefore, I hope this film will be the voice of children and poor people in India to the world, so organizations and people who have better life such as Kalilash Satarthi and SACCS know and help them out of difficulties.

Reflection: "The new Hereos"

In class we watched a movie “The New Heroes,” by Kailash Satyarthi in which people were forced to be slaves in India to perform labor. This film was very disturbing. Often I think a lot of people including myself like to pretend that we as a people have moved past this kind of thinking and exploitation, but unfortunately this kind of thing still occurs. In the film they referred to these people as belonging to an “untouchable class” which saddened me deeply. To think that someone could work as hard as they can with no incentive to move up or even the ability to earn money or prestige was a painful concept. We often forget that in this country, things like community college and tutoring are invaluable tools that we can use to change our lives and in other countries many don’t have the option to change their situation. Instead they are forced to deal with it and hope for a better future.

In the film a question was asked “If not now, when and if not you then who.” This spoke loudly because we all hope for the betterment of these and other exploited people, but these things will not just go away with out the help of all of us. We must be heroes as well because there are not enough out there for us to sit idle by. I believe like the film that a difference is possible (free paraphrase).

Summary of Kailah Satyarthi

I thought that this video was good but sad. It is so mean that they make the people work “twelve hours everyday of the year and if a truck to load, had to work eighteen or nineteen hours”. I would not like to work that many hours. That is way too long and they are not even paid that well, if they are even paid. It is not right how if the people working would talk when they weren’t asked something, they were beaten.
It is so sad that these people are used to being slaves, that it is hard for them to understand freedom when they are able to have it. Some people have been slaves all their lives because they weren’t able to pay back the debt that they owed. Even the government was corrupt and would take the money that was earned from the people that were sold. They are so scared of the mafia that the people don’t even want to leave. If they are caught, “the mafia will be tortured, beaten, burned with cigarettes, tied down to a tree and beaten and the women will be rapped in front of all. It must be so frightening to know that the Indian Mafia is in charge of them and how they don’t care about the people. All they care about is the people working. This is the same thing that I got out from the book “Half the Sky”.
Only fifty two people were saved from the village because many were too scared to leave or did not want to leave a loved one behind. At least some people were able to be free and were able to start a new life. The truck that was going to pick them up was late because the driver was afraid of what could happen if they were caught. Satyarthi put people in his car, he has made a village where freed slaves can be at. He mainly tends to focus on children. To many he is a hero. A hero is a person that changes the lives of people and gives them hope.

New Heroes is a video that
document a lot of incredible people who go out their way to promote justice and equality around the world. The episode focus on Kailash Satyarthi, he is an Indian man who dedicated his life to fighting injustice. He once had a promising career as a electrical engineer but he gave that up for a life of helping others. His job is considered highly dangerous, he goes into place where people are kept as slaves and literally break them out. If he is caught, he will be killed, but yet he still persists in helping these people. He have saved more than fifty slaves. When he rescues the slaves, he bring them to a half way house where he provide them with food and clothes. The people rejoice and celebrate their new found freedom. After three days, he takes the parents back to their villages and keep the children. He first asked the parent can he keep them, he does this because he want to educate them and give them an opportunity to become something in this world. Most times the parents agree because they cannot properly support the child. Satyarthi does a lot of good in India. He has also started a nonprofit organization that let people know if they are buying slave manufactured products. The organization is called Rug mark; if it has a seal by them; it means it is not made by slaves. This organization was started up because a lot of times rugs are made with slave labor. This organization helps to reduce the slave labor. Satyarthi is truly a great person, the world would be better if there were more people like him.
