Cyber-Response 2

Today in class we watched two New Heroes segments in the early class. The sesond program was a profile of Inderjit Khurana, Orissa, India. Here is the profile from Hew Heroes about the Train Platform School.

In the second class we watched profiles of Albina Ruiz, Pucullpa, Peru, and Tete Leal in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Respond to the shows seen here. Go to the website for the New Heroes (posted below 3/29). The social entrepreneurs share characteristics; what are some you observed?

Respond to the program re: the same questions asked of Mimi Silbert's involvement in Delancey Street.

Inderjit Khurana

Project: Ruchika School Social Service Organization (RSSO), Train Platform Schools
Location: Orissa, India

As a schoolteacher, Inderjit Khurana used to take the train to work. And each day, in the stations, she would come into contact with dozens of children who spent their days begging from train passengers rather than attending school. She learned that it was not a rare or isolated problem and that millions of children in India live on the streets.

Convinced that these children would never be able to escape their conditions of poverty and homelessness without education, and realizing that it would be impossible to enroll these children in school, Inderjit decided to create a model program for "taking the school to the most out-of-school children."

Khurana's "train platform schools" aim to provide a creative school atmosphere and equip children with the basic levels of education necessary to allow them to work productively, enjoy many of life's pleasures, and become positive contributors to their communities.

Khurana's ultimate goals reach far beyond the 20 platform schools she and her colleagues have created in India's Bhubaneswar region. She is determined that her program become a model for effectively changing the lives of the poorest children throughout India and the world.

The first 1000 storys failed to inspire me, this is no diffrent. I have come to a point, in my writing, where I really have nothing more to say. I don't enjoy being a negative person, but this class brings me down. So to do myself a favor I'm going to cop out of this one and just write.

(Insert negative comment here)

I feel much better now. I did not let this stupid, boring, worthless video effect my mood...... Crap, I
did it again.

Delancey Street is a 2 year program that helps people that were in jail for a couple years and they are giving this opportunity to change and work for this company. This is good because it pretty much gives them a job but they just don’t get paid but get a house over there head and food. Since it is so hard for people that have been in jail for so long this gives them a opportunity to change. Other companies do not want to hire people like that but this company helps these men to better there future rather than make them go to the same thing they only knew, going back to jail. This company does not just employee these men but also gets them educated, like there GED, gets them there licenses to drive commercial vehicle as well and the regular class c licenses. The types of jobs they give them is all kinds, different trades like, moving companies, restaurant servers, gardening and many more. These men say that they do want to change but they just didn’t know how but with this program they have changed, were society looks at them just like everyone else, not a convict. This is such a great program that Mimi Silbert put together for these people to make a difference in their life.

Ruchika School Social Service Organization and pant form school is a great organization that Inderjit Khurana has put together for the children of India. A lot of these children in India have to worry were they would get money to eat, so a lot of children and also adults look to prostitution, gangs, and drugs. Inderjit saw that these children are having to grow up too fast making adult discussions because they did and do not have a choose because they have no school. Inderjit wanted to help these children to better these societies of poor children, since the government of Indian said that there is no way anyone can civilize or help these children. She builds schools to help these children but it is so hard to get money because the government does not help in any way. It is a struggle for Inderjit to pay and support these schools and teachers so she has to spend wisely the money that is donated. The big struggle she has with the children is gangs. It is hard to keep track of these children since they are around the train station, because they have to be careful and not get close to the trains because she has explain that they have lost children to accidental death of getting ran over the train. Girls have been lost to prostitution at a very early age of 10 years old. Inderjit has a vocational training to these children so they can self promote themselves to make money, instead of looking to other ways to get money, like prostitution, and drugs. This is a great thing that Inerjit has give these children, this is exactly what third world countries need, they need to educate the children in order to help the country and people.

We watched "New Heroes" this morning. Delancey Street program gave people an opportunity to change their lives such as offer them a job. They emphsized that everybody wants accecpt from society. People want to make their lives better but sometims they just don't know how. I bet everybody experiences something that he/she doesn’t like, but he/she has to deal with whatever it is. Therefore, finding a method which can make the difficult feeling become smooth has become important for people. Some people fight with the difficult feeling, some people do drugs to try to evade the difficult feeling, and some people try to use mindful practice to control their consciousness. I think this method works.

Mimi Silbert helps make a difference an many peoples lives. Her program, Delancey Street is a 2 year program that helps people that were in jail to get back on their feet by working for the company and get a good job. This gives them a opportunity to change.
This program provides many men and women a opportunity for change. By changing themselves and getting a job society will look at them like a regular working man or woman instead of a convict. Ruchika School Social Service Organization and pant form school is a great organization that Inderjit Khurana has put together for the children of India. Inderjit has noticed that these children don’t have a childhood. They have to grow up fast and make adult discussions because they have no school. They face really life everyday and have to make a living. Inderjit has built schools to help these children but it is so hard to get money because the government does not help in any way. This is a struggle for Inderjit. The biggest struggle is that she has with the children is gangs and Girls in prostitution very early as 10 years old. This is a great thing that Inderjit has given these children. A way of living. Receiving an education can make a huge difference in their lives and there communities.

The New Heroes movie we watched today in class was very profound. I really have enjoyed all of them so far. The one thing that I’ve noticed about the social entrepreneurs, they all have an undying desire to contribute to society in a positive manner. They have a vision that is community driven and not selfishly motivated. The social entrepreneurs also happen to socially be classified in the upper middle to upper class. Now the individuals of whom lives they have impacted were extremely joyous because of the work done by the entrepreneurs. The programs that the entrepreneurs started are helping to bridge the gap between the haves and the have not’s, it is uplifting those that society has down trotted and so often over look, these people are very gracious for the impact the social entrepreneurs have and are seeking to continue to have on their lives.

One characteristic of these social entrepreneurs is determination. They have found a problem that does not directly affect them, and helped turn it around. They have also created jobs for people who previously had close to nothing. They are also all very caring and put others before themselves. It is one thing to be a part of the problem and to fix it, but to have a good life and to reach out to the poor and helpless is a huge thing. They all put their own lives aside to give other people a chance. One last characteristic I found was that they never give up. No matter how bad things might get, they still believe in the people that they are supporting. They know what they are doing is good and ultimately everyone will prosper.

Albina Ruiz identified a problem in Peru with the garbage dumping. People would spend their days waiting for garbage trucks to dump the trash so that they can collect bottles to sell. She addressed the problem by starting a business that turned compost into fertilizer and sold other things like plastic. Her program targets the poor people living in these areas with a lot of trash and gives them jobs planting food and recycling trash. The measurable results is cleaning up the cities and giving more stable jobs to people who formerly were digging through trash to have an income.

Tete Leal identified a problem in the favelas of Brazilian slums. These are poor areas where people are living with big families in small spaces. Up to 20% of the people are unemployed. She addressed the problem by giving women jobs sewing clothes and selling them. She targets the poor mothers who need to stay home while working to support their children. The measurable results are giving these women better skills and a more steady income.

Today, I watch DVD about hero of Mimi Silbert. She is brave and powerful women. There is location, San Francisco, CA. U.S.A. The students are former pimps, prostitutes, junkies, drug dealers and armed robbers. Her program's name comes from Silbert's own past. She is a residential education center where criminals learn to lead productive, crime-free lives. It has been called the most successful rehabilitation project in the United States. They earn revenue by operating more than 20 businesses, including the Delancey Street Restaurant and Café and Moving Company. These "training schools" not only generate income, they teach residents marketable skills and inculcate in them habits of self-control and self-discipline. They need to line up a job and a place to live. Silbert likes to see each of her students graduate with three marketable skills to ensure their job success. She originally rejected foundation money, fearing it would deter from the participants' feeling that their survival depended on the success of the businesses. She support jail’s people and they found new life. She had positive sprite and good energy. Silbert is always facing new challenges. I remembered about her laugh.

Also, I watch DVD about hero of Indetjit Khurana. I felt she had big companion and she was world mother. As a schoolteacher, she used to take the train to work. Children spent their days begging from train passengers rather than attending school. She is very smart why she built school at train platform aim to provide a creative school children with the basic levels of education necessary to allow them enjoy life’s pleasures, and become encouraging contributors to their communities. She is determined that her program become a model for effectively changing the lives of the poorest children throughout India and the world. Teachers gather the children together between the stops of the train for reading, writing, arithmetic, geography and history taught through song, puppetry and other teaching devices such as the train schedules themselves. Children accept about alive education from her new programs. She is empowerment women at India society.

Mimi Silbert is a woman who created a program for people who come out of prison to help them get back on track to cope with the continually changing society. She has the people working in her restaurant, and other places such as apartment complexes and movie theaters. She helps the people get back into the working world so that, when they leave her program, those individuals will have the experience to go out and get an honest job. This job enables those people that have not work for an extended period of time to acquire work experience so that they can go out into the world and get accepted into jobs that, would otherwise, turn them away because of an absence of work experience. I, someday, might want to go and visit her restaurant to see how her entrepreneur way of thinking has benefited, not just her, but also the ex-inmates whose lives were changed because of the program those individuals experienced.

The services that Mimi Silbert provides at the Delancey Street Program are an integral and often overlooked element of rehabilitation. Convicted felons are often released from prison with no hope of procuring an honest living and rebuilding their lives. Prospects for the job market of today are dim for most, but once a parolee is released into the work force they find their opportunities have dwindled. We live in a society that makes it fairly easy to wind up in prison and the ignorant turn a blind eye. How can we expect to reform anyone when they're expected to work and there is no one to hire them?

Inderjit Khurana's platform schools for street children are also truly inspirational. Another overlooked element of our own society is the poverty and homelessness in children. It is not uncommon in the United States for homeless children and young adults to turn to drugs and prostitution. I would imagine the problem is only worse in India. Khurana takes initiative and does not worry about continuing to fund her projects. She focuses on making them the best they can be and the budgets seem to fall into place.

Respond to the New Heroes segments:
Today in class we watched New Heroes Video. Mimi Silbert is a woman who made an organization called the Delancy Street Program in San Francisco. This program helps people who come out of prison and learn some skills there to improve their lives. The people help move, and run restaurants etc. I really like the New Heroes movies. It makes me feel that I should spend some time around these organizations and help others. Someday I want to go to the restaurant and learn more about the people.
We also watched another episode of the New Heroes. It was about Inderjit Khurana, an Indian woman who is a teacher and takes kids from the train station. These kids beg and sleep at the station and at the age of 10 or 14 the go out to become prostitute or join a gang. Inderjit wants to save the lives of these little kids. She built a school for the kids at the station, where the kids take a bath, pay games and get education. These kinds of situations are common in the United States. You will see many kids in a gang and adults homeless on the streets. But it is really bad in India. She is trying her best to protect these children. She wishes that one day she gets a big check form out of the blue to keep this program moving. We should make her wish come true.

Presentation Woman we admire
I admire Rosa Parks. was nationally recognized as the "mother of the modern day civil rights movement" in America. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, December 1, 1955, triggered a wave of protest December 5, 1955 that reverberated throughout the United States. Her quiet courageous act changed America, its view of black people and redirected the course of history. She is one of the greatest woman in the history. One of her quote is "Each person must live their life as a model for others." I like her. Because of her we have freedom for women, and color people.

The important characteristic of social entrepreneurs is to move the society from negative to positive way by creating jobs and educating people. Albina Ruiz is a determined entrepreneurial woman. She knew turning the trash problem in Peru to opportunity for the poor people. She opened a business that recycled trash, so she created jobs and cleanse the environment for the poor. In addition, the target of Tete Leal is to solve slums in Brazil. She gave jobs to women such as sewing and selling clothes. With Indetjit Khurana, she is also a admirable entrepreneur, for she brought education through song, writing, and stories to homeless children at the train stations with a hope that education can improve these children’s lives.

response to New Heroes

The new heroes series has been very interesting to me because of the individuals involved in the programs. The individuals are redeveloping economic infrastructures to include the community that will be the core of economic evolution. Many of the individuals from these communities have never had an opportunity to create or develop economically because they have no resources. Without any resources there will be no development and it will leave communities to live in poverty for infinite time. These individuals that are investing in community redevelopment need to be applaud for their efforts.

Response to New Heroes

I like the New Heroes series very much. The two characters we shared in class is Albina Ruiz in Peru and Tete Leal in Brazil. Albina has identified the local problem and started her business in order to provide the local people the job opportunities and learn how to earn the living in the bad environment. Her business also helps the city turns into a better living place. Tete as well has found the local problem, and she started to helping the local women to earn a living by sewing and selling the clothes. Both of them are using their talent as an social entrepreneur model to create jobs for the poor to make a difference to their lives.

Today in class we watched another New Hereos video. Mimi Silbert who tries to provide an oppurtunity for people who are in poverty and want to change their lives in positive ways. Mimi Silbert is a strong and brave women. Even though the government doesn’t help, she really tries hard to help these people. It is horriofing embrassing and sad to see children who are about 10 ten years old, and they are already in gangs or in prostituion. As we see how education makes such a big difference in those lives in this movie, society definetely needs more entrepreneurs than today to understand the personality and problems of our society and make corrections for us. what ever bad happens in life, people should go back to turn their life in positive ways. Those people, in the movie gets a chance and oppurtunity because of her program. She is definetely puts her heart and focus into what she is doing, and she knows what she is doing. I found this video inspiring and she is a graet person. We need more people like her for this world.

THe indian Government refuse aid her in this indevor; they believe it is just to expensive. Inderjit usually can only reach the children before they go into prostitution. Girls have to be reach by ten because they will become prostitutes or commit suicide. Boys have to be reach by the age of fourteen. For students that are late starters are put into trade schools where they develop a skill so they can make a living.

Inderjit Khurana is a Indian woman who likes to help educate the local children in her Indian village. She realizes that not many people pay attention to the children in the streets. She holds activities for the kids at a train station. For many of these kids, they have no where else to go. Many have the option of becoming prostitutes and gang members or becoming apart of the Train Platform school with Khurana. She saves many of these children's lives.
