My Known World
My known world is that of a middle class white person. I have not travelled very much, I have not talked to very many people, and I have not really experienced very much. The extent of my worldly knowledge is limited to my extremely small amount of education. Being a community college is not exactly a window into the rest of the world, and the limitations of laziness and public transportation confine me to this small island in the bay. My known world is not particularly expansive, not particularly noteworthy, and not particularly interesting. My family is all here, my friends are all here, and my education is here. I can even admit that my job lies somewhere between my home and my school, in that short strip of nothing that we call Alameda. My known world is about as limited as it can be given my economic status.

My known world is amazing. I’m a single man in my late twenties who gets paid a chunky salary to go to school. My family is loving and supportive of my gypsy lifestyle. I’ve traveled the country east to west and north to south. I get to smoke herb all day if I want to, legally. I have a killer roommate and good friends. Life is good, and it’s only getting better.

What is My Known World?
My known world is not much. I deal with college on a daily basis. If I'm not doing homework, then I'm coming up with questions to ask my counselor. Sometimes I'm figuring out what to do, what subject I like, what I want to be. Also I'll be exploring transfer options. There's is really not much going on in my known world, otherwise I sleep, eat, and go on you tube. Especially for now that is it.

The Man in the Mirror
Honestly I would say that Michael Jackson was a real revolutionary. His suggestion that we make a change is still being echoed today. The video was in no way self serving, seeking to harness the guilt inside people in order to motivate them. It showed images of many things that happen in the world and we do nothing to prevent. It depicted images of police brutality, poverty, suffering, and then whenever the chorus chimed in with “I’m starting with the man in the mirror” the images changed to marches and people doing good things, fighting against social injustice. Honestly a very well put together video. I’m sure it served its purpose.

My known world is being an immigrant from Korea and transitioning into America for the past twelve years. Since I was only six years old, I didn’t have a full grasp of my native language, Korean, as it gave me a chance to catch up on learning English. Like learning English, I adapted to the culture and lifestyle lived by Americans, still having my Korean heritage also.

My Known World is pretty complicated yet fun. I go to school four days a week, if I’m not at school, I am either out with my family of my friends. I know what I want to do after college but I do not know if it is the best option for me. I am 100% Filipino, I was born in the Philippines and basically grew up here. I have a very loving family , supportive friends. I love my life and I could not ask for more. My life can be complicated sometimes , unexpected things that happen on a daily basis, but I could not complain. I have pretty much everything I want or need.

My Known World
I was born and raised in Brazil, a country which I miss and love with all my heart, however, I’m aware that my country still needs to improve in its economy and the people need to be together to make Brazil a better place to live. Brazil lacks well educated and qualified people that can help to build a stronger economy. That’s why I consider myself a champion by just being in the United States and going to College here. In the present moment I’m here away from my family which is really hard for me, and I’m doing my best to make this opportunity worth. I only want to go back to Brazil after I graduate and after I have the certainty that I’m well qualified to do my part and help to build a better Brazil.

The music video for Man in the Mirror wasn’t like ordinary music videos, as it showed various clips from people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy of news footages about the nuclear explosions and other major events. Aside from that, pertaining to the lyrics “I see the kids in the street with not enough to eat,” there were also footages of children who could not afford to eat. The purpose of showing footages is to bring awareness to the events happening in the world and to take time in reflecting upon them, thus the title being Man in the Mirror.

“Man in the mirror”
Mahatma Gandhi said: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. I believe that any change starts inside of each of us and together everybody can make a change. “Man in The Mirror” is really touching and shows all the sad things that need help to be changed, starting with our own selves. We can let go of selfishness, stop thinking only about our own problems and look around to see the real problems in the world and make a change. Starting inside of us, together we can make a change.

Michael Jackson made the some of the best music videos ever created. He includes scenes or footages from different times of history. He even included different famous people to emphasize the meaning of the song. For the Man in the Mirror, he included images of the things that he wanted to change, like children not having enough food to eat, wars, violence etc. “I have got to make that change today” is like showing how determined he is to fullfill his dream, make that change in the society. I really like this song, it is very catchy and the meaning is very good. It is also easy to understand and convincing.

My known world revolves around my family, my struggles and my town Oakland . It’s a whirlwind of confusion, I’m trying to make it as a successful person however being perceived as someone who can’t because of what I see everyday and my hopes diminish because of the obstacles I am faced with, mainly money and what I’m labeled as. Confusion to get to know myself as a person, as a young adult, what I want to attain in life, and the relationships I have with people. To try to follow the correct path education first, getting money the correct way and become someone my family is proud of. To make changes in how society views Oakland as all bad, and incarcerating the youth when really what we all just want is a piece of the pie not scramble to get crumbles of nothing.

My Known World & the Man in the Mirror
My known world is seeing the brutal natural order slip through the cracks of an otherwise civilized demeanor, where structures meant to administer justice become arms in a war to justify the insecurity of others: others meaning ostensibly not me.
In a macroscopic sense, my economic wellbeing is floated on the backs of others locally and world-wide. Michael Jackson’s video “Main in the Mirror” is centered on a determination to make a change in this situation, how any change starts with changing yourself. The director juxtaposes images of starving children in the third world to the homeless in the first world to bring to light the suffering underclass of the global system. He compares the racism of the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan through juxtaposition as well. Images of Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi represent the change Jackson hopes to inspire.
At the same time, the system is arranged to disenfranchise anyone intent on making a change. I feel strongly that I fall into that category.

It is always said to make a change one must start with themselves. Michael Jackson’s song “Man In The Mirror” truly emphasizes that point. The thesis is, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror I’m asking him to change his ways and no message could have been any clearer”. His supporting evidence is, “I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love”. In the video there are images of Martin Luther King Jr. who is a person who’s made a change and inspired change in people. The video shows people in unity, but also planes throwing bombs and people without homes which is what he’s trying to get rid of and create something positive instead where those situations wouldn’t exist.

Man in the Mirror
The song called Man in the Mirror, by Micheal Jackson is about changing bad qualities about oneself. The video to the song reveals the bad qualities of racism, through specific images. Some of these images include the KKK, Martin Luther King Jr., and poverty stricken children. All images reflect the imperfections worldwide such as crime, racism, protests, and homelessness. The images and the lyrics are meant to encourage people to change themselves, so the world can be a happier, healthier, and safer place to live.

Reflections on “The known world”
I am wonderfully made and fearfully made. My dream and aspirations to supersede in life must be stronger and greater than limitations set forth by others. The experience that were bestowed to me during my short life has elevated me to the woman I am today. Please walk with me as I give you the opportunity to see the world from my eyes: To be the person that I am now, I had to reflect and accept accountability of my past actions. My past is one that many would love to erase from their memory, a past, which remained dormant, until I found myself. The steps involved in regaining myself encompassed letting go of my anger and self pity. I had to look within myself and see my self’s worth, which lead to my belief that I ran away to college to forget my past. During the years leading to entrance to college, I became caught up with friends, cared way too much about my appearance, and became “that girl” who needed others to be happy. I lost sight of my goal, to become a lawyer. My goals were buried by my present materialization infatuation, thus my dreams, and my values, failed just to create a façade of which I came to the point of promising myself to learned from my mistakes and be a better person.

My known world is what I make it out to be. I used to care a lot about what people thought of me and what I should be doing in the world, and not what I want to do. For instance, I would often sacrifice something I wanted to do in order to do what everyone else wanted. That I guess is how peer pressure works. I also felt unease about being called a nerd, and tried to get that name off of me. But now, I guess that I don't really care anymore. As I matured, everyone else did, and looking back now at the people who used to call me nerd or tease me, I see that I am doing things far better than them. I often justify my actions by comparing myself to others, and making sure that I am "better" than them. I guess in some strange way, I still care about what other people think about me, although now it's not a thing about me pleasing them, but more about me being praised by them.
