Freewrite Cyber-Assignment
Respond to the following in one paragraph. Use examples from TKW from current events and primary experience. Post here.

Remember Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible? How is "privilege" defined there by the subjects profiled?

Now, contrast this definition with the one Jones's novel, The Known World, suggests?

Is the suggestion that property equals power equals privilege a notion that exists just in the novel or are there examples of this in the "real" or contemporary world?

How are pat definitions for terms like racism and privilege interrupted when variables shift?

2. Peer reviews: Social entrepreneur essays

3. Questions? Homework?

Freewrite: Priviledge

Priviledge means an advantage over a certain group. White priviledge was spoken about alot in "Mirrors of Priviledge". I havent started erading The Known World yet, but from what i have read from reviews. Blacks have no privildeges and "white priviledge" plays a big role. In my world, racism and privilege are almost equal to eachother.

Privilege

In Mirrors of Privilege the subjects interviewed tended towards privilege being an ability, aptitude, or situation that an individual is able to utilize that others are not. They suggested that you do not work to gain privileges; privileges are something that you are born with. Privileges by this definition are woven intricately with racism because race often offers opportunities that you would not otherwise be able to work to attain. The idea that property is power is privilege is exemplified by the concept of inheritance. The idea that we pass on our possessions to our children when we die is one that is inherently a privilege.

In Mirrors of Privilege, privilege is defined by the color of your skin. By having a lighter caste, you had more privilege; that is, you would be less inclined to have racism directed towards them. In The Known World however, privilege is defined by how much you own. It is a class thing, where having a "legacy," as Maude puts it, is the foundation for how much privilege someone has. There are real life examples of this in life; for example, even though OJ Simpson was found not guilty of his trial, we all know he killed his wife. But because he had a lot of money, he was able to buy his freedom. It did not matter that he was African American, what mattered was how much money he had in the bank. It's not about the color of your skin now, it's about how much wealth you have acquired, and this is the fundamental truth in todays society; the more money you have, the more privilege you have.

Being that I am an Mexican-american who has grown in the United States, I have adapted to living here and gotten opportunitunites my parents didn’t have when I was rasied here. People who I grew up with, teacher, students, friends, family. Each of them has tought me the world outside my own, they told me to explore my own decisions, I have been looking for them for most of my life. My attitude reflects on what I know and knowing what my own culture and race, I would be contributing in some way. For example, when I was 19 before I graduated high school, I help my community to help seek them for jobs, it made me feel better that helping people will earn good deeds.

My life changed when I entered college, I never had an education that what high school teaqched me. I am glad that I stepped in college before I became older. I am looking at my world with an open-mind. If I havent been in college, I would continue to stay self-centered and could careless in the world.

Freewrite: Privilege
When I watched the film, Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible, I realized how racism is pretty active all over the world. I have never been into a serious racist situation. Well, I can say that I did not pay that much attention to it, until now, until now that I am more mature and exposed to a lot of things including media that shows me how there is really a difference between white and colored people, specifically African American people. When I read parts of the book The Known World, it is basically about slavery, white people used African Americans as their slaves, they made them do work under bad working condition at the same time, they did not get paid. Conflicts rose because of the fact that they wanted acceptance, fairness and truth. Racism does not just destroy family but also the whole community since racism, sexism, violence and harassment are all connected to one another.

Free write: Privilege

The definition of privilege in “Mirrors of Privilege” is a gift that you’re born with, it can’t be taken from you and you live with it day by day. The people interviewed were white and automatically have that privilege because of their skin color but some felt guilty and thought it was their responsibility to help in some way.
“The Known World” is a different story because in the book only the white people are privileged and even then the poor white people are not as privileged as some of the free black people there. Freedom is also a privilege there because if you are a slave or owned by someone even when your doing well economically your still someone’s property. For example Henry is one of the wealthiest African-Americans in Manchester yet when he wants to buy a blanket at a white people’s store he can’t and no amount of money or class can change the fact that his skin color isn’t white. Another example is when he wants to purchase slaves his former owner William Robbins has to go with him so that the transaction would go through. In the real world property equals power does equal privilege in some way as long as you have money you can pay your way out of things. Take the celebrities for instance they go to jail for a shorter amount of time, and get different treatment than someone who wouldn’t have that social status.

With the diversity that exists today the pat definitions for terms like racism and privilege get confusing. Although for me it has not been that confusing to understand I think the media plays a role in showing us that because of what they want to show you, since the 80’s it’s only showed African-American and Latino youth in a bad light. But why won’t they do that with white collar crime? Therefore I think someone who’s been kept from power can’t be racist. And privilege is something you are born with.

Respone to the Syllabus

This syllabus was the most unique syllabi I have ever encountered. It seemed to be talking to the students, rather than just stating fact after fact. I feel like it is more pleasant to read than other syllabi, but it takes a little more effort to find the information you're looking for. I like how it sums up the class and it seems like there will be a lot of oppurtunities to improve our writing skills. The fact that it is more personal shows that you have emotion and compassion for the students, which makes me care more about the class. I am excited to test out and improve my writing.
