Planting the Naysayer Freewrite Cyber-Assignment
We looked at alternative viewpoints in class Wednesday and Thursday. In both the 9-9:50 and 4-5:50 classes we reviewed They Say, Exercises 1 and 2 (pp. 90-91).
Students shared the sentences they developed and then looked at THP essay and highlighted in yellow those areas where they responded to other viewpoints. If there were none, students then wrote such a position into their essays.

In the 9-9:50 class we talked about the qualities of Good Writing and how the moves we have been practicing in They Say, especially the one where we entertain objections to our arguments (Planting the Naysayer) strengthens the writing.
From the board today:
Good Writing is: clear, unbiased and opens doors to productive discourse or conversation; that it is respectful of other opinions, opens lines and channels to conversations and other doors to alternative viewpoints.

They Say: Plant a Naysayer
1) Proponents of illegalization of medical cannabis are right to argue that cannabis prescriptions will be given to some undeserving. But they exaggerate when they claim that cannabis culture is bringing incompetent, and unproductive citizens along with it..................The context that this statement is taken from is regarding the response to the failing attempt to enhance quality of life in this country through the "war on drugs".
2) While it is true that Jamie will not be in the greatest health in his later years, it does not necessarily follow that he should be surrounded by calamity while in good health............In the context of response to my thesis question of Gretchen steeling herself for preparation of Jamie's succumbing to hepatitis. Gretchen has the right mind to drop all of what she is doing to do everything that is in her power make every one as happy as she wants them.
